ON THE COVER
Our cover shows newlywed Brittney Short Hearn. Brittney and John Hearn’s romance began February 1, 2011, when the couple met on a blind date. John, from New Orleans, wasn’t too happy with St. Louis’ cold climate and couldn’t wait to finish schooling and return to Louisiana. His desire to leave disappeared after meeting Brittney.
They became engaged in Austin, Texas atop Mount Bonnell on April 13, 2013. Brittney is project manager for Cathedral Properties, where she rehabs historic homes. John is a resident physician in psychiatry at BarnesJewish Hospital. Photo was taken in Forest Park amidst glorious fall foliage.

sun smart
BY ROBYN WALKER
If you enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming, golf, tennis, biking, hiking, jogging or water skiing, it’s important to protect your skin from the burning rays of the intense summer sun. Too much exposure to the sun can result in sun burn, sun damage, premature aging of your skin, precancerous skin growths and skin cancer.
Whenever you’re outdoors, even on a cloudy day, wear a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. We think that you’ll like Tommy Bahama’s Gleam Weaver stylish sunglasses.
If you want your skin to have a healthy summer glow, we suggest that you apply a brush-on bronzer. One of our favorite face bronzers is Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick bronzer.
During the summer months, it’s important to protect your face from the sun so we suggest that you wear a hat or a sun visor when you’re outdoors. We especially like Tommy Bahama’s casually chic wide-brimmed Ombre sun hat.
To protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun, it’s essential to wear a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor. Sunscreen products are scientifically formulated to shield your skin from the ultra violet radiation that causes your skin to burn, blister and peel. If you have fair skin, which is more susceptible to sun damage than dark skin, choose a sunscreen product that has a high sun protection factor such as an SPF 30 or SPF 45. If your skin tans easily, an SPF 15 sunscreen product is a good choice. We especially like Estee Lauder’s SPF
16
30 sunscreen for your face which provides ultra protection from the summer sun. Instead of sunbathing, you can achieve a natural-looking tan with a sunless self-tanning lotion or a sunless sprayon tanning product. We recommend Clinique’s Self Sun, an easy-to-apply tanning lotion.
Limit your exposure to the summer sun. It’s best to spend only a few hours in the sun each day. Try to avoid being in direct sun light during the noon hour and in the afternoon when the sun is especially strong.
If you follow these simple suggestions for protecting your skin from the harmful rays of the sun, your skin will look radiant all summer long. UT

MASKS, MUSIC & MIRTH
BY SHEILA FRAYNE RHOADES
Uptown focuses on the wedding of Brittney Lauren Short and John Kendall Hearn, November 2, 2013. It was a spectacular event created by some of St. Louis’ finest wedding vendors, together with the remarkable talents of the bride herself!
Since childhood, Brittney has expressed an innate talent for decorating. To her parents’ chagrin, she liked to rearrange décor in her family’s CWE home. This probably led to her present career as a rehabber, turning older houses into beautiful homes. Her designing woman’s attention to detail
helped in planning many of her own wedding’s details.
Brittney loves classic black and white, and succeeded incorporating these colors into everything, from the striking black beribboned invitations (by Paper Patch) down to the souvenir match boxes. Brittney said,
“I wanted our invitations to set the tone, letting our guests know they were in for a good time.”
Finding the perfect wedding dress was easy for Brittney at Fleur De Lis Bridal. She said, “The moment I tried on the Judd Waddell dress, I knew it was the one .” Brittney also designed
18 | UPTOWN MAGAZINE
a detachable train for the ceremony, mimicking the pleats on the back of the dress. She selected a custom Erin Cole veil.
The rehearsal dinner was held at the Norman K. Probstein, Forest Park Golf Course. Brittney said, “We were treated to a beautiful slide show
produced by my sister and Maid of Honor, Jennifer Dengel. She had gathered pictures of us when we were children, all the way through to our engagement. It truly made the evening!”
The eldest of four daughters, Brittney grew up in the Central West
End of St. Louis. Her parents, Patti and Kevin Short graciously opened their historic home as the fabulous wedding venue. Built in 1906, the mansion is located on Washington Terrace, and listed on the national register of historic places. Another piece of history has
UPTOWN MAGAZINE | 19
now been added to the home – their daughter’s marriage!
On the morning of the big day, Brittney and her bridesmaids (including her three sisters) prepared themselves in the Phyllis Diller bedroo m, so called because the famous comedienne stayed there when the mansion belonged to the late Stan Kann (Fox Theater organist).
The Audrey Hepburn looking bridesmaids wore classically styled black gowns by Bill Levkoff. Their hair and makeup was done by Danielle Style and Annie Heyward.
Sentimental Brittney wore special family keepsakes. Grandmother Peggy Cannon gave her a birthstone ring worn by Peggy’s mother, Marie DeChaine James on her wedding. Brittney also carried two hankies representing her Great-Grandmother Marie and Great-Great Grandmother, Marie Favreau DeChaine Baxter.
Archbishop Robert Carlson officiated at the ceremony in the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. Wedding party photos were taken by Heather Roth outside the Cathedral and later on Art Hill in Forest Park,
against a backdrop of vibrant red leafed trees.
The evening reception for 215 guests took place back at the Short residence. The home’s patio and pool area was transformed into a party perfect venue with a New Orleans vibe. A 40’x100’ heated dining tent, two outside bars and a black and white striped cabana near the pool set the scene. The cabana would later serve as a late night scotch and cigar bar.
Guests were welcomed with stylish Southern hospitality. At the
20 | UPTOWN MAGAZINE
patio’s entrance, a table was lined with bubbly brimming flutes, together with a framed sign proclaiming “Time to drink champagne and dance on the table.” Old fashioned cocktails like Maker’s Mark Manhattans were a hit as the guests arrived. People mingled while listening to New Orleans jazz performed by the six piece Funky Butt Brass Band, they enjoyed spicy Cajun appetizers like Mini Oyster Po’ Boy sandwiches, Mini Crawfish Pies and Bacon Wrapped BBQ Shrimp on Grits. The wedding couple arrived wearing elaborate Mardi Gras masks. That November night may have turned chilly, yet nobody seemed to notice.
John’s mother, Marilyn Hearn said, “Brittney and her parents were so thoughtful to have a brass band, Louisiana Hors d' Oeuvres, and the special tent for the guys that John requested. I had never seen my son as happy as he was that day.”
Time for dinner and dancing arrived, and inside the tent, it was truly magical! Black and white stripes together with some golden glam were used throughout its décor. Under crystal chandeliers, it offered a sweeping view of black clothed tables, adorned with black and white striped runners and napkins, gold chargers and cutlery. The delicate gold chairs and white floral/ feather arrangements in silver vases added a special touch of elegance.
A beautiful tuxedo dressed cake from Sugaree took center stage, complete with a golden H for Hearn on its top layer.
The personalized menu by Ces & Judy’s
listed delectable edibles like filet mignon with shrimp, Portobello Wellington and stuffed chicken breast.
During dinner, Brittney’s dad, Kevin Short, toasted the couple and joked, “John, if you ever need advice on marriage, call me anytime, and I’ll hand the phone right over to Brittney’s mother.”
The reception band Galaxy Red got the dancers up and moving after each dinner course. Then the evening got even livelier when John and his father joined in - John on drums, while Steve Hearn played bass guitar to a cheering crowd. Dancing continued to the wee hours.
For saving happy memories, a fun photo booth by Studio B allowed guests to select and wear Mardi Gras style masks for their souvenir photos. Brittney said, “I wanted everyone of our guests to feel special.”
Brittney summarized, “The feeling John and I had on the day of our wedding was surreal. It truly was one of the best days of our lives. It exceeded all of our expectations and was a day we will never ever forget.”
John added, “Our wedding was truly memorable. To be surrounded by dear friends and family so far from home was almost overwhelming. Try as I might, it was nearly impossible to appreciate just how special the day was in the moment. Brittney deserves all of the credit for having the vision to plan such an amazing day. I was merely a tuxedoed accessory.”
The couple honeymooned in Ambergris Caye, Belize. UT

wedding TRENDS ELEGANT
We talked with eight wedding experts to find out what’s trending in elegant weddings.
Julie Ettinger, CEO and President of Ylang Ylang, notes that brides are selecting vintage diamond rings. We especially like Ylang Ylang’s luxe collection of vintage diamond rings designed by Single Stone. Julie says, “Single Stone diamond bridal rings are designed with vintage diamonds and the settings are vintage-inspired, made from an original style.”
Nancy Bischoff, co-owner of Byron Cade, says, “Brides are selecting china patterns from the finest names in china such as Herend, Royal Crown Derby and Anna Weatherly. Brides are selecting fine crystal, especially Waterford Crystal in bigger, bolder crystal patterns with tall stems such as Waterford’s Lismore crystal pattern.” Nancy notes that sterling silver flatware costs about $1,000 for a place setting, so brides are buying silver-plated flatware or stainless steel flatware such as ornate patterns by Couzon and Christofle.”

For large weddings receptions, brides are selecting luxury hotel venues such as The Hilton Frontenac St. Louis, which has two spacious ballrooms. The Clayton Ballroom accommodates 150 to 250 guests and the Ambassadeur Ballroom accommodates 250 or more guests. Janet Selby, Catering Sales Manager at The Hilton St. Louis Frontenac, notes that many of the wedding receptions are being decorated with bold, bright colors and up lighting. “Another fun trend is serving midnight snacks at the end of the reception,” says Janet.
Helen Murray, co-owner of Lubeley’s Bakery, notes that brides are selecting custom-made wedding cakes that reflect their wedding themes. “For weddings and receptions taking place at a winery, we’re creating wedding cakes decorated with cascading ivy and grape leaves,” says Helen. For destination weddings, the cake can be decorated to reflect the location of the wedding. “We' re creating cupcake towers, small cakes for dessert tables and textured cakes."
Many brides are selecting formal wedding invitations at Paper Patch. The wedding invitations can be designed with colors and graphic designs that are consistent with the wedding themes. In addition, brides are selecting large, formal fonts in pretty colors such as sage and watermelon. The linings of the envelopes can be matched with the color of the invitation. Wedding invitations with colored ribbons and bands are also popular.
Gourmet cuisine from fine caterers such as Ces & Judy’s is a popular trend for wedding receptions. Natalie Kaczmarczyk,
Design And Marketing Manager of Ces And Judy’s, says, “The Le Chateau Ballroom accommodates 250 guests. The Round Room, which accommodates 80 guests, is where guests have cocktails before dinner.” Ces & Judy’s can customize wedding receptions with Le Chateau Wedding Packages or Off Premise Wedding Packages. Natalie notes that brides and grooms are requesting served dinners, seasonal cuisine and food and drink pairings.
Hollie Hollensbe, Event Coordinator at Balaban’s,a very popular venue for rehearsal dinners and wedding receptions, works within the warm and comfortable party rooms at Balaban’s helping brides and grooms to make their wedding events exactly what they desire. “We make every effort to cater to exactly what the customer wants on their special day, every day,” says Hollensbe.
A trend in bridal jewelry are designer wedding bands and custom-designed wedding bands from Summit Jewelers. Brides and grooms can select simple gold or platinum wedding bands, gorgeous seven-row pave diamond bands and wedding bands with beautiful colored gemstones.
We’re certain that these elegant new trends in weddings will inspire you to plan the wedding of your dreams. UT

LADUE FRONTENAC
BY ROBYN WALKER
Luxurious” is the word that best describes the enviable lifestyle that Ladue and Frontenac residents enjoy. Ladue, considered to be the most affluent suburb in Missouri, has a population of approximately 8,000 residents, and began as a rural farming community in the 1800’s. The city of Ladue was named after Ladue Road, which led to the estate of Peter Albert Ladue, a French immigrant who became a wealthy St. Louis attorney, alderman, and investor.

ROMANTIC, EXOTIC
BY LINDA SPALL
Sst.barthelemy
outheast of Saint Martin and north of Puerto Rico in the northeastern French Caribbean sits what many couples believe to be the most romantic, chic, and luxurious island in existence, St. Barthelemy, also called St. Barts or St. Barths.
Discovered by Columbus on his second voyage in 1493, this 9.7 square mile island was named after his brother, Bartolomeo. White sandy beaches, tropical fauna, lush vegetation and shallow reefs, perfect for snorkeling, make this one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful islands.
Because St. Barts is a volcanic island, mountains and hills cover the island offering panoramic scenic views from hotels and villas. The soil, however , is somewhat dry but in season, the gardens are magnificent.
Dotted with restaurants offering rich French and creole cuisine and excellent service, culinary pleasures can be enjoyed in a city’s waterfront eatery, a hillside, a romantic beach villa’s terrace, or sitting in a tropical garden surrounded in palm trees and cawing birds. Rise early enough to enjoy croissants, rolls with jam, or eggs while viewing gorgeous sunrise then experience the spectacular sunsets, sipping a good French wine later that
evening. Make reservations for your favorite establishment for this is a small island with many visitors. A few of the villas and hotels do have kitchenettes and can save you many Euros however you may miss out on some scrumptious traditional delights such as foie gras, duck, pigeon and the extravagant desserts.
All American arriving in Saint Barth must have a valid passport which can’t expire for at least 3 months from your entry into St. Barts, and a round-trip ticket or proof of continuation of travel. Your first stop flying will be either St Maarten or San Juan Puerto Rico. The flight from St. Maarten is only 10 minutes and almost an hour from San Juan. Ferries are also available from St. Maarten and take about 45 minutes and leave several times a day. A round trip fare will cost you approximately 50 to 75 Euros. Also for hire are private boats charters and boat taxis. French is indeed spoken here
however most tourist establishments accommodate others by also speaking English. The currency is the Euro however the U. S. dollar is the secondary currency and works at some tourist establishments and many hotels. Time is Eastern Standard and electrical voltage is 220 so you will need a converter.
Instead of four seasons, the island of St. Barts only has two. Careme is the “winter” occurring from December 1 to May 30. The warmer season of Hivernage runs from June 1 to November 30. Overall, temperatures are between low 80’s and mid 70’s and the trade winds and blue skies are around for most of the year. The summer months are the best time to go. September and October are the rainiest season and some hotels and restaurants close. Hurricane season for the Caribbean is considered from July to November.
The beaches are public but not crowded, topless bathing is allowed

but no nude sunbathing is allowed. The sand is soft and white and the many beaches (over 20) are found in different parts of the island and each has a unique personality. Shell Beach is full of shells so bring shoes but make your way out to the water because the snorkeling is fantastic. Do your homework. Some beaches are good for recreational swimming, some are more jagged and rocky and others are perfect for surfing. A few require walking and have no facilities so always make sure to bring bottles of water. In fact, water is not a natural resource here (no rivers or resources) therefore the island depends on cisterns. Treat the water as a precious commodity and not to be wasted.
Hiking is worth the effort! Pass through the tropics
keeping an eye out for lizards and birds, iguanas, land and sea turtles and hummingbirds, butterflies and marine birds.
The two major cities are Gustavia, the aforementioned capital, and Saint Jean. Gustavia has 3100 residents, plenty of stores and historic buildings. and overlooks the city and water. Saint Jean is the second largest shopping area on the island with villas, hotels, and restaurants.
When choosing where you would like to go for your once-in-a-life-time trip, whether for a honeymoon, anniversary or for your much needed luxurious escape, think about it. Do you really want to go where everyone else has been? Why not go to romantic, exclusive, exotic St. Barthelemy? UT

GLEN ALSPAUGH KITCHENS & BATHS DESIGNED THIS LUXURIOUS MASTER BATH.
To help you turn your vision of a truly luxurious bath room into a reality, it’s best if you consult with a certified kitchen and bath designer or an interior designer. Your designer will work with you to determine the style of bath room that you want and will guide you through the entire design process to ensure that your new bath room is exactly what you envisioned and within the parameters of your budget. Before you begin your bath room remodeling project, it’s a good idea to explore all of the design possibilities. Is your vision of the perfect bath room an all-white design? Perhaps your choice is a bold, lively color or a pretty pastel shade for the bath room walls. Do you prefer a combination bath with shower or do you want a walk-in shower? Do
you want nickel-plated faucets, chrome-plated faucets or brass faucets? Do you prefer a stand alone tub or a built-in tub? Do you want white wood cabinets, painted cabinets or stained wood cabinets? Do you prefer one sink or two sinks in the bathroom? Do you prefer an elegant marble floor or a ceramic tile floor? Do you prefer a contemporary bath that’s ultra sleek and modern or a more traditional and classic style such as a French Provincial bath? Will you want to add architectural interest to your bath with the addition of white columns? How much use will your bath room get? Will the bathroom be used by one person or other family members? Do you need extra cabinet space? What type of bathroom lighting do you prefer? These are important interior design decisions that you and your designer should make together.
Your designer will be able to acquaint you with the newest, most-wanted trends in baths and the best brand names for high quality building materials, fixtures and cabinets.
When designing a luxurious new bath room, it’s important to determine a realistic budget. Keep in mind that the designer you hire needs to be given budget guidelines. The type of bath room cabinets, fixtures and building materials that you select for your new designer bath room will depend on the budget that you set.
Whatever style of bath room that you ultimately choose, we’re certain that you and your designer will be able to create a beautiful bath room that’s truly luxurious, user-friendly and within your budget. UT

The summer rituals that we enjoy the most are opening the pool, setting up the outdoor furniture, decorating with clay pots of vibrant summer flowers and firing up the barbecue grill. After all, isn’t the summer season all about having fun in the sun?
Outdoor furniture, which works wonders for your pool, terrace, patio or deck, is available in so many different designs that you may have a difficult time choosing your favorite style. To help you make the right choice of outdoor furniture, you may want to consider the architectural design of your home.
If you live in a cozy cottage, a picturesque Victorian or a New England-style Cape Cod home, you can opt for the classic look of wrought iron outdoor furniture, Adirondackstyle wood furniture or weatherproof resin wicker furniture that adds a charming ambiance.
For traditional Colonial homes or English-style manor
homes, we especially like the streamlined style of aluminum furniture. Best of all, aluminum outdoor furniture is lightweight, weatherproof and lasts year after year.
Homes with a contemporary, modern or eclectic architectural design look attractive with the addition of wood furniture or woven resin furniture that’s durable and weather-proof. We think that you’ll like the sleek, clean styling of wood furniture and the subtle sophistication of woven furniture.
Never underestimate the decorative impact that a colorful outdoor umbrella can have in transforming your outdoor

living space from ordinary into extraordinary. We think that a colorful outdoor umbrella is the perfect accessory for your home. Imagine how attractive your terrace, deck or pool area will look with a colorful canvas umbrella.
We especially like the colorful look of retractable awnings because they provide shade. A retractable awning designed in colorful solid or striped canvas also expands your outdoor living space and protects your furniture from summer showers.
Outdoor pavilions are another imaginative way to beautify your outdoor living space. Decorate your outdoor pavilion with outdoor furniture, outdoor pillows, clay pots filled with your favorite summer flowers, a casual indoor-
outdoor sisal rug and a fire pit. An outdoor pavilion creates the effect of having a room in your backyard, but without windows, ceilings, floors or doors. You, your family and friends will love relaxing in an outdoor pavilion during the summer months.
An inviting outdoor seating and dining area thoughtfully arranged on your terrace or poolside also offers all sorts of wonderful outdoor entertaining possibilities such as a casual outdoor barbecue, an al fresco dinner or a lively cocktail party.
We’re certain that these imaginative ideas for outdoor living will inspire you to create a backyard oasis that you’ll enjoy all summer long. UT

Schaefer is quite the man. He is charming, handsome and intelligent and has a very fun, magnetic personality. Tom is the type of guy who makes you feel comfortable the minute you meet him. On top of all the aforementioned traits (which makes him darned near perfect!), he also has impeccable taste. His home reflects his passions and his profound sense of beauty but most of all, the over powering feeling is the openness. Tom’s delightful personality combined with the open design of his house automatically evokes a relaxed, welcoming, cozy atmosphere.
Built in 2010, he bought the house in October of 2012 and immediately started redoing the inside, which took all of six months. New light fixtures, new floors, walls painted and cabinets redone, Tom, with the help of interior designer/decorator Kris Keller painstakingly made the new house completely his. The incredible pool area and landscaping outside took another 6 months. The house itself is in a French Manse type style, with ruddy bricks and stone and a bit of Tudor in the mix. The circle drive encases the simple yet perfect front lawn which helps showcase the lovely lines of the house and draws your attention to the massive arched, windowed, walnut door at the center.
Once inside, the open floor plan and vaulted ceiling make a beautiful entrance way. To the left is an office, full of shelves leather chairs and desk and to the

From the Great Room, one enters the open kitchen which has a breakfast nook fitted nicely in a large bay window area. I loved how the large plant is centered in the bay window with a small plant centered on the table and the picture of a plant on the wall close by. The scheme seems so simple and yet so very elegant. In fact, all the rooms in the house are so tastefully done and so artfully “put together”. All the rooms in this house have plenty of light and the dark wood furniture sits brilliantly against the walls. 1 2
right sits the dining room with a table for eight and a stately 6 door china cabinet which is absolutely magnificent. In this room, you can see the first hint of Tom’s affection for Leonardo De Vinci, as the Mona Lisa print, which fits perfectly in the room, watches over guests at the table.
The Great Room showcases an open grand piano which sits in front a multi-paned window and with the drapery framing the piano, and Tom’s guitar standing close by. Picturesque and well lit, the white stone fireplace nearby gives the room a balance of contemporary and comfort.

In the Hearth Room and in the hall to Tom’s bedroom are works by Peter Lik, the very famous nature photographer. Tom acquired one with a colorful sunset over water cascading on rocks while he was in Hawaii. Dimmer switches can change the life of the picture. The doors throughout the home are alder wood and lead to the 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, attic and basement. While the flavor of neutral tones and olives, tans and grays appear on the walls, the home is family oriented and especially intriguing due to the art. The kitchen is a gourmet’s dream, complete with TV, pasta faucet, two door black stove and cabinets hiding the appliances. Although the counter came with the original house, Tom had a black counter top bar added which gives extra room, depth and contrasting color.
With 6 bathrooms, 5 bedrooms and 3 levels, the house has plenty of space to play. The attic is all in white and is almost ready as the grandchildren’s playroom. The fully finished basement has the entrance to the massive pool area. Tom expanded the rooms and this where the parties begin! Complete with a wine cellar, bar area with a full size refrigerator, arcade games, ping pong table and pool table, this floor is a big hit for birthday parties, Super Bowl and in the summer, the pool!

A lagoon shaped pool is surrounded by a small rock wall and plants on one side and a flat wide patio on the other with steps leading up to an upper deck which can be entered from the house. Another way from that upper deck to the pool is by taking steps to a concrete walkway leading to a path of giant stone steps that lead to the pool. Fully equipped with a built in TV, bar, cabinets, mosaic tiled wall, and a barbeque pit, the stone hut bar is perfect for that all-inclusive Caribbean resort ambiance. Pool and landscaping with waterfall, stone hut bar, are the work of Tim Pinkston of Distinguished Pools. Knowing that our homes are direct reflections of ourselves, we can certainly say that Tom Schaefer is an eclectic, tasteful, talented man. Graduate of Bishop DuBourg and MSU, this South St. Louis born selfmade man clearly has done well. His family, talents, travels and passions are all mirrored flawlessly in his perfectly elegant home. DINING ROOM LOOKING OUT TO PATIO
CORNER OF CAFÉ WITH TUSCAN MURAL
VIEW FROM CAFÉ INTO RESTAURANT INTERIOR
A beautiful mural depicting Tuscany, iron railings and a large skylight give it an open air/ courtyard feeling. It allows diners to enjoy a European experience no matter what the weather.
The restaurant's interior offers three more dining areas, each with its own unique art work. Upon entering the more formal Fire Place, Mirror, and French Door Rooms, the ambience becomes a bit more sophisticated. Exquisite chandeliers, murals and white linen tables offer a warm friendly welcome. Then there’s the added attraction of subtle romantic music as talented guitarist Dan Hoerle entertains on Saturday evenings in the intimate bar. It’s so nice to dine by!
Trattoria Branica's tempting menus offer regional Italian dishes - "The true taste of Italian Cuisine". Whether at lunch or dinner, diners are always treated to cuisine that covers the entire map of Italy. Luscious dishes made from classic ingredients include plates of seafood in brandy cream, Marsala wine, and lemon zest. Veal chops, fillets, and strip steaks swim in mushroom cognac and demi-glace. To compliment the food selection, there are rich red wines and dry whites from a vino list featuring more than 300 wines by the bottle. The well-stocked wine cellar features selections from all over the world.
Lunchtime is a great time to sample favorites in a lighter vein. Start with appetizers like Smoked Trout, Fried Calamari, Tenderloin Carpaccio, Toasted Ravioli, Grilled Shrimp and Fresh Minestrone. Of course there are salads, hearty pizzas, and sandwiches like Grouper, Steak Sandwich, and Chicken Parmigiano. Lunch entrees include Veal in a Light Lemon Sauce, Pork chops, Sicilian Style Tilapia, Grilled Salmon, or Chicken Saltimbocca.
Fantastic Pastas include: Lobster Ravioli, Spaghetti Bolognese, Baked Cannelloni, Chicken Tortelloni, Fettucine Genovesi, and Linguini with Clams.
After sampling the lunch menu you’ll want to return for dinner. So on a recent evening, my party of four enjoyed some delicious specialties. Our salads were wonderful - Caesar Romaine Salad with made-in- house dressing, Fresh Spinach with Oranges, Gorgonzola, Walnuts and Dried Cranberries in Sherry Vinaigrette, and a Salad of Asparagus with Roasted Bell Peppers.
For entrees, my companions had Veal Topped with Gulf Shrimp in a Lemon Butter Sauce, served with Grilled Asparagus. Another guest ordered Filetto Arrosto, an 8oz Center Cut Beef Filet with a Mushroom Demi-Glaze. This writer especially enjoyed Fettucine Golose, composed of Shrimp,
Scallops, Asparagus and Tomatoes in a Cognac Cream Sauce. Everything was perfecto!
For dessert, please try the luscious Pena Cotta with fresh raspberry sauce, house made Tiramisu or Bread Pudding!
Family Monday Nights have returned. This deal includes a special set price menu including three courses for $19.95, and on Wednesday nights, select bottles of wine are offered at half off prices. Don’t forget Mother’s Day offering special buffet 11am-4pm.
It’s easy to see why Trattoria Branica has become one of Frontenac’s most renowned restaurants. It offers excellent service and fantastic dining in a lovely atmosphere. at home with In-Home Culinary Classes
I love this time of year when the temperature reaches 75F – 80F degrees during the day, and a comfortable 65F - 70F degrees in the evenings. It’s perfect for outdoor grilling and backyard parties. Lighter fare appears to be what most people gravitate towards these days. While I try not to load up on my carbs too often, one dish I’ve found everyone enjoys is my Caprese Pasta Salad. Whether serving it as a side dish at my barbeque or bringing it to a friend’s house, guests always come back for seconds, and thirds.
If you’re not familiar with the Italian term “Caprese” [kuh-prey-zey] it means, of or in the style of Capri. It’s a dish oftentimes prepared as a salad with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil leaves, drizzled with olive oil.
My version contains these components with the basil portion in the form of pesto. Pesto is a sauce that originates in Genoa in the Liguria region of northern Italy. It traditionally consists of garlic basil, and pine nuts, blended with olive oil, and Parmigiano Reggiano.
Of course you can purchase ready-made pesto at the grocery store, but for a fraction of the cost do yourself a favor and make it homemade – it’s so easy, and tastes superior to the store bought brands.
If you’re not a fan of noodles try using a Spiralizer (watch video: (http://goo.gl/g7n7Ov) creating vegetable noodles with zucchini, for a no carb version. Would you prefer serving this as a main dish? Add chicken or shrimp for a heartier meal. However you prepare it, this salad is outstanding, and holds up well outdoors!
CAPRESE PASTA SALAD
INGREDIENTS: Pesto
• 3 tsp. pine nuts
• 2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed
• 1 clove garlic
• Pinch of sea salt
• ½ cup plus 3 Tbsp. grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
• 1 ¼ cups extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 (8 oz.) container Ciliegine, fresh mozzarella balls, (cherry sized) halved
• 1 container red cherry tomatoes, halved
• 1 package bowtie pasta, whole grain, regular, tri-colored, or gluten free
DIRECTIONS:
1. Pesto:
In a food processor, place pine nuts, basil, garlic, and sea salt and process to a paste. Add the cheese and drizzle in the olive oil. Continue blending until smooth.
2. Pasta:
Prepare pasta as directed on package; drain and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process. Place drained noodles into a large bowl or platter.
3. Add tomatoes and mozzarella balls to pasta. Liberally add pesto and mix to combine. Add salt and pepper to taste if desired. Serve at room temperature or chill until ready to serve.

ST. LOUIS’ TOP ENTERTAINERS
Joe Mancuso
THE JAZZ SINGER
FBY SHEILA FRAYNE RHOADES
orget the likes of Michael Buble, St. Louis has its own golden voiced crooner right here in Joe Mancuso! Mancuso consistently wows audiences with classic jazz standards from The Great American Songbook. His love for song is quite evident both onstage and off.
Born in 1966, Mancuso literally grew up listening to Sinatra, Elvis, The Beatles and other top artists on records played by his music loving parents.
At age 10, Mancuso was given a guitar by his Aunt Josephine "Skipper" Mancuso, a prominent nightclub and USO singer. Mancuso said, “Aunt Skipper was my musical inspiration to study music.”
Mancuso is a classically trained vocalist turned jazz singer. He graduated from Webster University in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in music. “I’m a Baritone with some tenor range .I studied classical voice, but really wanted to focus in Jazz. At the time, Webster didn’t offer a jazz voice program... so I learned various arias and classical pieces, and my vocal teacher let me perform one jazz number each semester!”
Upon graduation, Mancuso co-founded Audio Arts Recording & Duplication, a small recording studio. In 1996, Mancuso got his first regular gig as a Jazz Singer with the Todd Mosby Group at C.J. Muggs in Clayton. Then his career was temporarily placed on hold. Having sold Audio Arts to The NBG Radio Network of Portland, Oregon, Joe moved to Oregon with his wife Carla and their little daughter Chela. Two years later the homesick family moved back to St. Louis where Joe Jr. was born. In 1999, Mancuso and his brother Vince started WebChurn.com, a high end web design and Internet marketing company.
After a 15 year break from performing, Mancuso’s muse began calling to him, and he placed an ad for a pianist. In February of 2011, Mancuso heard from Tim Garcia, a veteran jazz pianist who performed around St. Louis. They met and ran through several jazz tunes. Tim asked him to join him on his gig the next evening. Thus began Mancuso’s "meteoric rise" to the top of the jazz scene in St. Louis. A little over a year later in September 2012, Mancuso was named the best vocalist by the RFT Reader's Choice poll.
Over the years, he’s had bookings at over 50 different local and regional venues, and has performed with over 100 local musicians. “I play with many different musicians in many different configurations – duo/trio/quartet/quintet and Big Band. I play monthly with guitarist Dave Black (Riverfront Times best Jazz Musician of 2011) at the Chase and Bar
Louie in St. Charles.” Mancuso performs regularly at the Chase Park Plaza, The Sheldon Concert Hall, Robbie’s House of Jazz, EdgeWild Restaurant and Winery, BB's Jazz Blues and Soups, Bar Louie in St. Charles, Nathalie's on Lindell, plus private events, corporate functions, and weddings.
Asked who his favorite vocalists are, Mancuso replied, “I really like Kurt Elling, Diana Krall, the late Amy Winehouse, Gregory Porter and Jamie Cullum. Of course I love Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, The Beatles, Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk.”
Mancuso just released his first CD entitled Cut To The Chase. “It’s a snapshot of the music My Quartet performed during the summer of 2013 as we played at the Chase Park Plaza.” Mancuso has started a new record Label -Mancuso Records and will recording three more records this year.
Cut To The Chase is available online at iTunes.com and Amazon.com as a Digital Download or CDs at Performances. UT
