More than 2,000 guests, the men attired in white tie and tails and the women wearing elegant evening gowns, attended the celebration. The Queen‘s Supper was held after the VP Ball. In addition, The Veiled Prophet hosted a cocktail party and a reception for the debutantes and their families.

His Mysterious Majesty, The Veiled Prophet, crowned as his queen of love and beauty, Miss Eleanor Clark Brennan, who attends DePauw University. The Queen was dressed in a white designer ball gown embellished with sparkling crystals and she carried a large bouquet of magnificent orchids.

The Veiled Prophet welcomed sixty seven debutantes to his court of love and beauty at this year’s VP ball.

VP Ball Special Maids, dressed in colorful ball gowns and carrying beautiful bouquets, were Caroline Stevens Fryer, Mary Ogden Hager, Ashley Scudder Engler, Emily Thatcher Smith, Elizabeth Kelsch Thaman, and Hallie Burst Stupp.

As part of the colorful pageantry of the Veiled Prophet Ball, the Bengal Lancers, the legendary marching soldiers who are part of the Veiled Prophet’s royal court, performed for the guests attending the VP Ball.

Former Veiled Prophet Queens as well as Ladies Of Honor also were honored at the VP Ball. The women were escorted by members of the Veiled Prophet Order.

yoga

& the benefits of pilates

OPilates and yoga are truly transformative forms of physical exercise. They tone your body and tune your mind. The physical effort can be quite intense. And at the same time, they both require a stillness that can be difficult and even a bit frustrating to cultivate. You will need to remain open to the experiences in your body and mind as you learn. Your efforts will be rewarded with a more balanced body and mind if you stick with it.

ne of the many challenges of the holiday season is keeping your life in balance. In the moment, this can be quite enjoyable, but we frequently end up “paying” for it later. So, if you let loose a little last month, forgive yourself and start making some positive lifestyle changes to get through the next few gray wintery months. And who knows, these changes just might feel good enough to carry you forward for rest of the year.

are the physical poses of yoga. Each pose takes you into another realm of your body and the combination of several asanas leads to a wellbalanced strong and flexible body. What you learn “on the mat” about yourself and how you respond to the physical poses can lead to a profound awareness of how you live your life “off the mat”. When you practice regularly you can make great strides in finding more peace within you creating more peace around you.

Our society is so focused on physical appearance in the most literal sense. How flat is my stomach? how slim are my thighs? how big is my butt? What are my measurements compared to some unrealistic media ideal? The first thing to tune into with yoga and Pilates is not how your body looks, but rather how your body feels. We humans come in all shapes and sizes. Pilates and yoga do make your body more shapely but the real benefit is that they help your body be more functional, more energetically well-balanced, and more at ease. This creates a beauty from within that works in tandem with the improvement in alignment that helps make for a more shapely exterior. This mindset will also help you to not get impatient with the process. It is a journey, not a destination.

Yoga is more than an exercise practice. It is a path to approaching the world and yourself that is non-judgmental and compassionate. Having said that, many of us enjoy learning those habits through the practice of asanas, which

Pilates is also more than an exercise practice. Yes, Pilates is a finely tuned system of exercise designed to strengthen and stretch the muscles that support our skeleton in order to keep our bodies in proper alignment. But as a result of the Pilates exercises, which go deep into the musculature of our bodies, we literally and figuratively can get in touch with the core of our essence. Every Pilates practitioner has had an “ah hah” moment. And these are both enlightening and empowering. In addition to getting you stronger and more flexible, yoga and Pilates both keep your joints moving in a full range of motion, lubricate your spinal discs, get your blood flowing, can increase bone density, help your lymphatic system fight infection, decrease anxiety and improve your mood. So not only does it get you moving, it keeps you feeling well enough to keep moving. And students look forward to their hour of practice because it just plain feels good. So incorporating either practice into your repertoire of self-care is actually an enjoyable lifestyle change to make.

Designer trends 2012

Every year Pantone, the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, selects its color for the year. this year’s selection, aimed at being an antidote for the country’s economic and political atmosphere, is PANtONE 17-1463 “ tangerine tango”. Described by Pantone as “a spirited reddish orange’, tangerine tango ‘continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.”

For some, tangerine - tango or otherwise - might be a bit too much for your interior but teddy Karl of the Ladue design firm, The Great Cover Up, has seen an increased use of color among his clients over the past several years. “People aren’t afraid of color anymore.” It’s also easy to add in little pops here and there to get used to the idea slowly. His one-of-a-kind pillows that he personally makes by hand are a great beginner step to adding color for those who may be a leery of changing an entire room.

A big trend he sees, which adds both color and texture, is the return of wallpaper. For many years it used to be just high-end residences that were incorporating it into their decorating scheme but “it’s cycled around” Karl says. “Wallpaper is definitely trending again and in the mainstream, not just upscale.”

26 | Uptown Magazine
dual sink kitChen by

Karl adds “grasscloth is still huge, as it has been in the past” but more and more people are enjoying the patterns and textures wallpaper adds to achieve a layered look.

Wallpaper holds several other benefits as well. Several years ago, when HGtV was hitting big and the do-it-yourself trend had people trying to create their own wall treatments and faux finishes, you’d often find a room with four different effects. Not intentionally, but it took three walls to figure out how to master the technique. Wallpaper solves that problem by giving a uniform predictability for the entire room while still adding texture. It’s also more wipeable than a flat finish paint and doesn’t fade. And, lest you’ve tried to strip your grandmother’s antique rose paper bit by tiny bit until you just decided to paint over it, fear not, today’s papers are much more easily removed.

Perhaps more importantly though, Karl explains “It’s more accessible [than it had been] and some are not as expensive as before.” Manufacturers have also made it easier for clients to select wallpapers. It used to be designers would have to lug out several huge books to show the client, or you’d have to imagine for yourself what an entire room would look like. Karl explains “Thibaut, our largest selling line, shows a picture of the pattern and all the colors it comes in” so it’s much easier to envision your room.

Hunter Douglas, the window coverings manufacturer, has also streamlined the way their books work so it’s easier for a client to understand their options. Their big trend is the return of bamboo woven wood blinds. Karl describes them as ones “like back in the seventies but they’re modernized and back in full force again.”

Another big trend for the coming year is menswear inspired looks. Ralph Lauren, Georgio Armani and Andrew Morgan have all turned their attention to interiors. Think tweeds in camel and cigar brown, leather, flannel, hounds tooth prints and pinstripes. Ralph Lauren’s Haberdashery line includes furniture, bedding, lighting, rugs, wall coverings and even dinnerware in herringbone or glen plaid. The “Gentlemen’s Lounge” inspiration acts as a solid backdrop for a variety of decors and

while currently trending, is trend-resistant in it’s classic, timeless appeal.

The biggest trend Karl sees overall however is that people aren’t moving. Instead he’s seeing more new updating. HGtV decorator Lori Dennis reiterates this in her trend watch for 2012 where she says McMansions are out, the use of quality materials in smaller spaces is in.

This is never more apparent than in the most functional room of the house - the kitchen.

Diane Rosen of Diane Rosen Interiors says “The trend has been to have more conveniencewarming ovens, wine coolers and a separate ice compartment in the wine fridge.” Wine coolers are especially popular because they come in so many shapes and sizes.

In addition to trend-setting appliances, she’s seen a trend in the overall kitchen design as well. “We’re still maintaining an open large island. I think the island is here to stay so you can prep and visit at the same time” says Rosen. But more and more she’s designing kitchens with two separate sink areas, one for cleaning and one for prep work. She says “I definitely like a prep sink and a utilities style sink, even in smaller suburban homes because it’s much more user friendly. You can prep on one side and chat on the other side.” Overall, Rosen says “People want luxury touches,

Another way of updating and modernizing your existing space is utilizing “oversized” items in your design. Arlene Lilie, of Arlene Lilie Interior Design says “the trend I see, and it’s been happening for a while and it’s continuing, is the use of large scale.” This could be a large scale pattern in a wallpaper or fabric, or oversized mirrors, windows, artwork or floor lamps for example. She says “It’s a good way to easily update a room, especially if you don’t have a lot of money.” Other trends that will continue are anything that is earth friendly. This includes furniture made with reclaimed wood and the use of “repurposed” materials, “green” designs, and energy efficient appliances. And of course anything that’s “Made in America”.

jonpaul the man

chandelier an artful anachronism

TJohnny, named after his grandfather, grew up in Mississippi, hence the slight southern lilt, and didn’t come to the St Louis region until about 8th grade when his father moved the family up to Belleville. Jon says “my father worked in construction but we moved up here because there was nothin’ goin’ on in Mississippi with eight kids (to support).“ From an early age he instinctively tried to figure out how things work. Growing up, he and his brothers and sisters would “just play with stuff - anything. We just found stuff here and there; people would

he Chandelier Man. Jon Paul. He’ll answer to either of these, but his given name is Johnny Hunt. the Paul comes from Paul Mroczkowski, the name of his partner of as many years as the store has been around - nearly twenty now. And like the misconception of his name, you may also be surprised by the man himself.

give us stuff.” Then Jon would take the things apart and put them back together again. Much like he does today, but now with the exquisite, antique chandeliers in his showroom. Johnny/Jon Paul is a study in contradictions. He comes across as short on conversation but long on family, friends,

and friends he’s adopted as family along the way. He and Paul still keep in close touch with several friends they met years ago, including the producer of Wheel of Fortune whom they met on an extended train trip visiting the National Parks He has a keen eye and a great sense of artistry yet he prefers to spend his weekends four wheeling and fishing at his cabin in Saint Genevieve. The simple truth is this is a man who knows what he likes and is confident in his approach. In 1992 he quit his position at a local art gallery to open the store. When I asked him how he knew it would be a success he replied simply “I just had a feeling. I knew it would work.”

The same basic principal relates to his overall business philosophy. “I just make sure everyone’s happy. If the customer’s not happy they’re not going to come back. They know everything’s in good shape, it’s clean, and everything electrical works.” Even if it’s a piece of contemporary furniture that will stand alone in the store, Jon explains “I buy what I like. I won’t buy anything that’s junk.”

Most everything in his store comes from St. Louis, much of which he learns about by word of mouth. “I know where to find stuff” Jon says. He goes to clients’ homes on a regular basis to purchase items or to take them on consignment, and attends estate and garage sales. “And people bring stuff in every day.” There are no formal or set receiving hours he explains, “they can just call me and come over any time.”

This “stuff" he refers to includes: antique furniture, crystal chandeliers of all sizes, extra chandelier parts, Limoges boxes, Lalique, Waterford crystal, English Halcyon Days boxes, lamps, artwork, and antique fine and costume jewelry. With this vast array of goods jam packed into his store it’s easy to overlook something. But what surprises people the most he says “is how fast we sell the stuff. If theres something you want, buy it, or it’s gone.” Perhaps it is his willingness to negotiate that helps expedite the sales. Because of the inventory turnover, the store changes every week. He receives in new items everyday so it has to constantly change to accommodate them. In addition to sales and consignments, he also refurbishes, reworks, rewires and repairs chandeliers. He will also help you arrange the installation of a large piece.

Jon was gracious enough to allow us to visit his Country French home nearby. He describes the interior style as “French Neo-Classic with Egyptian revival - but really it’s just eclectic.” He says people tell him his home is just like the store, and he agrees but quickly adds “but it’s not that much!”. He and Paul, who’ve lived there for the past nine years, refurbished the 1920’s home designing interior columns to be added to the living room, an ornate fireplace mantel, and the family room addition (the setting for his accompanying portrait) that runs the back of the house. It exudes charm and personality with little quirks like a giraffe statue, a zebra portrait, animal print club chairs, and a beckoning game table offset by a small monkey statue resting in the corner. When they moved in, the entire house was done in jewel tones reflected by the lapis blue kitchen that still stands. He says they intend on redoing the kitchen but “we’re never in there, we don’t cook. It’s so much easier to go out and then you don’t have to clean up.”

Even if he prefers not to clean up the kitchen, the man is not afraid of work. When discussing retirement (Paul recently retired from Boeing after 32 years) he says “I’ll never retire - probably. I’ll be bored to death.” Good thing he comes from good stock. His 95 year old grandmother is the oldest of eleven, only two of whom have died. She just quit mowing her lawn a couple of years ago because her knees were giving her trouble. Jon is proud to have been born on her 40th birthday, but from the looks of it, and lucky for us, he’s got a long, rich life yet to live.

“Come Thou Monarch of the Vine”

Valley Napa

“Come thou Monarch of the Vine”. Unbeknownst to William Shakespeare, the emotions and pictures stirred in our souls by his words are the perfect description of California’s incomparable Napa Valley. We can liken it to tuscany and the Rhine River Valley but this is America and the hot air balloons, the wine train, the hills, the small western towns and the people that inhabit Sonoma and Napa Counties make the Napa Wine region so very unique and exciting.

For those unfamiliar with the valley, San Francisco is the closest large city. The “City of the Golden Gate” is located north of the central part of California’s 840 mile long coast. North of San Francisco is Sonoma County and to the east is Napa County. Most people refer to both counties as the Napa Wine Country.

to get there, you can fly into your choice of several airports. San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento and San Jose are each approximately 60 miles away and can be reached in approximately 1.5 hours driving time. Santa Rosa Airport (StS) is about 35 miles away and Napa County (APC) is a

small airport with no commercial flights. San Francisco and Oakland both have shuttle buses that run from the airport to the City of Napa.

When is the best time to go? The coldest time is in January. It was late November when writing this and the temperature in Napa was in the low 60’s. The wettest month is February and the driest and warmest month is July with the highs around 83 degrees.

History is rich. Once owned by Mexico, George Yount , a trapper and carpenter was the first Anglo-Saxon in Napa County and built a sawmill and grain mill. George’s

granddaughter married the man who established and named Inglenook Winery. Samuel Brannan founded the city of Calistoga, starting the tourist industry by developing it as a resort town because of the many hot springs. Being a smart man, he built the Napa Valley Railroad Company in 1864 to bring tourists. Silver mines, lumber, agriculture, land, climate, the river and the springs made the valley known as the “Land of Abundance”. A visit to the Napa Valley Museum will give you exhibits depicting the history, culture arts and sciences of the area.

When the employment of the Chinese who worked on the railroad and in the mines was ended due to extreme prejudice, workers came to America from Italy, Switzerland and France. It is from these workers that the hillside vineyards were created.

With over 400 wineries now in the area, resorts, hotels and companies offer tours complete with classes, demonstrations, tastings and entertainment. Give yourself an experience of a lifetime in a hot air balloon, complete with a champagne brunch. Many marriages have come to fruition because of the proposals amorously spoken while soaring in the air over breathtakingly beautiful hills and valleys.

try the Napa Valley Wine train. Enjoy the scenery as you dine with lunch or dinner and visit select wineries or perhaps join in on one of the murder mysteries excursions. Visit the Oxbow Market, local artisans selling their wares, Farmer’s Markets, the many shops and make sure to sample the unique restaurants that only Napa has to offer.

State parks offer hiking trails which range from easy to the more strenuous. The area is hilly and mountainous so chose your trails wisely. Skyline Wilderness Park, Kennedy Park, which sits on the Napa River and one of the largest manmade lakes in California, Lake Berryessa stocked with trout, catfish and more are.

If you enjoy local history, visit the Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park. This is where the settlers came to have their corn and wheat ground into flour. Build in 1846, the mill is still standing with its 36 foot water wheel. The park also includes the Pioneer Cemetery and the site of the first church in Napa Valley.

You can hike from the mill to Bothe-Napa Valley State Park which also has a number of trails.

Another historical park is the Robert Lewis Stevenson State Park. Author of such books as treasure Island and Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, Stevenson was quite sickly with tuberculosis. While in his native Scotland, he received word that his American lover, Fanny Osbourne was finally at the end of her divorce proceedings. He traveled to Monterey, CA where Fanny’s family and doctors nursed him to better

health. He was advised to go to Napa Valley for the healing mountain air. In 1890, the couple stayed in a cabin in the Silverado mining camp for two months. From this adventure, Stevenson wrote The Silverado Squatters, a book reflecting life in the area including meetings with wine owners and the settlers. A short mile long hike takes you to the honeymoon site and a five mile hike takes you to a panoramic view of Napa Valley, the High Sierra and San Francisco Bay.

Accommodations range from budget to ultra-luxury with choices of hotels, villas, spas, bed and breakfasts and motels.

The Auberge Du Soleil sits on a hillside with Mediterranean décor, Italian linens, down bedding and duvets with an award winning spa. In fact, the Auberge Du Soleil won travel & Leisure World’s Best List in 2008, 7th Best Hotel in the US, 37th in the World and the 7th Best Spa in the World! Would you like stay at a bed and breakfast in Napa? try one the inn, main house or cottages of Old World Inns. Located within walking distance of the Wine train, shops, restaurants and wine tasting rooms, you will love the ambiance and service, privacy and fireplaces in each room.

Visit the wineries! Do not follow the assumption that “if you have seen one, you have seen them all”. Each winey has its own décor and personality and each have their own labels and flavors. You will find each is unique. Whether overlooking their vineyards, high on a hill, in a valley, Italian, Swiss, modern, “green” or “themed”, they are as flavored as their wine.

So “Come thou Monarch of the Vine…Cup us till the world go round”. imagine what Shakespeare would have written had he experienced napa Valley!

A cozy, intimate eaterie with contemporary décor, Water Street is truly an enjoyable and unique dining experience. This remarkable restaurant, which seats forty-five guests, is not overcrowded or rushed, and you can savor a leisurely lunch or dinner.

Water Street is also the perfect venue for a memorable selection of delicious appetizers such as salmon gravlax and a glass of fine wine or a cocktail. Our favorites are the Hemingway daiquiri and the Pomegranate martini.

Water Street’s tantalizing menu is comprised of many treasured family recipes gathered over the years by Water Street owner, Gabe Kveton, and his sister, Maria Kveton, who is the chef at Water Street.

Some of the original recipes are from the Kveton’s grandmother. A carefully selected group of freshly-prepared appetizers, salads, desserts and main courses such as flatbread, ham panini, bruschetta and steak and guiness pie offers freshly-prepared homemade cuisine made with the freshest and finest ingredients including many local and organic ingredients.

are incredibly smooth and creamy __ and well- seasoned with paprika and sweet pickles. You’ll also savor the succulent warm dates, which are superb. They’re stuffed generously with goat cheese and fresh basil, and wrapped in crisp, flavorful bacon with a tangy balsamic reduction.

A Water Street favorite is the roasted chicken paprika which melts in your mouth. This delicious entrée, which is prepared in a savory sauce of caraway seeds, onions and sour cream, is accompanied by fresh steamed brussel sprouts. This entrée is comforting food that is seasoned to perfection and satisfying to your palate.

Water Street is also the perfect venue for a memorable selection of delicious appetizers such as salmon gravlax and a glass of fine wine or a cocktail.

Among the noteworthy dishes is the golden trout which is perfectly sautéed to give it a flavorful and rich taste. The savory trout, which is embellished with crisp bacon and served over fresh spinach, cannellini beans, onions and tomatoes, is truly a culinary marvel. The portion is generous, yet not overly filling. The trout is tender and succulent __and the bacon accompaniment adds just the right amount of saltiness to this delicate fish entrée.

If you enjoy a freshly-made salad, a must-try is Water Street’s maple-bourbon salad, which is a lively mix of crisp spring greens, onions, gorgonzola cheese, fresh pears, candied almonds and a flavorful dressing of zesty balsamic vinegar, maple and bourbon.

For starters, you’ll want to order the delectable chicken liver pate encrusted with pistachio nuts. The homemade pate is robust and hearty with a rich flavor. We suggest that you enjoy a glass of Giacoto Pinot Grigio with the delicious pate appetizer. Another popular menu item: deviled eggs which

If you have a fondness for fresh seafood, savor the steamed mussels and chorizo (seasoned pork sausage) served up fresh in a spicy tomato and white wine sauce.

Another must-try is the grilled polenta, a satisfying culinary creation of cornmeal, which is topped with fresh sautéed mushrooms, parmesan cheese and spinach.

For dessert, we recommend the freshly baked warm fruit tart of fresh raspberries, topped with vanilla ice cream. It’s perfect when accompanied with a glass of champagne or Kaldi’s espresso.

Water Street’s select wine list offers something for everyone. Choose from a select variety of award-winning red, white and sparkling wines such as Novy, a California merlot and Chevalier, a California chardonnay.

Water Street’s bar is also a fun gathering place during Happy Hour every week from tuesday through Friday with special prices on tap beers and select wines.

This Maplewood hot spot is known for its extensive cocktail menu which includes exotic drinks such as the zombie, tequila sunset, pomegranate, Harry Longmeyer punch, stingers, Hemingway daiquiri, green lady, white lady, pink lady and the ever-popular jasmine martini.

We think that you’ll return again and again to savor the unique dining experience at Water Street. The cuisine is reasonably priced and the service is superb. to celebrate Valentine’s Day, Water Street will be offering specialties in addition to their regular menu so now is the perfect time to make your Valentine’s Day reservations. Enjoy!

Sweet and Tempting and Delicious to Eat and Drink

Go ahead, look, there are no calories in photos

When pairing desserts with drinks of any kind, there is really no wrong way to do it. It is a matter of discovering the flavors you enjoy together rather than following strict rules. The possibilities are endless.

One approach is to match specific flavor notes in the dessert to that of the drink so that the same flavor element is accentuated. Another idea, try unconventional pairings like the beer we paired with chocolate cake. Experiment a little. You may be surprised at how good your pairing tastes. Begin with our short list of ideas and then let your imagination go wild. There are no limits.

tiramisu with vin santo or frangeliCo

t iramisu pairs well with a number of drinks, including dessert wines such as Vin Santo, an Italian dessert wine. Amber in color, it originated in tuscany, but examples of Vin Santo can be found throughout Italy. It ranges from dry to sweet. Not only is it lovely to look at, it is delectable to drink.

Also delicious with t iramisu is Frangelico, a glorious hazelnut liqueur. The complex nutty flavor of the liqueur pairs well with the coffee, cream and chocolate notes of the t iramisu. Frangelico is produced in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy and gets its irresistible nutty flavor from special hazelnuts found only in that region. They are infused with a number natural extracts including cocoa and vanilla. Versatile, Frangelico is tasty straight or mixed. Enjoy it with coffee, added to coffee, poured straight over ice, or in a cocktail. Drink it in the winter or summer; it is the perfect after dinner drink.

Cookies with milk

Almost nothing is as pleasing to the stomach or as soothing to the soul as a tall, cold glass of milk paired with fresh, warm cookies, especially chocolate chip cookies. Milk, a traditional pairing with this dessert is delicious in its natural state; add chocolate syrup or a little vanilla extract for a new twist. Vanilla contrasts beautifully with the chocolate in the cookies. Drink it cold on summer days or warm it up in the winter for a truly satisfying food experience.

ChoColate Cake with Coffee, esPresso and stout

When pairing something as scrumptious as rich, dark, chocolate cake, it is easy to pick many drinks that work remarkably well such as coffee, espresso and stout. Pick a full-bodied coffee to set off the flavor and richness of the

dark chocolate in the cake. Choose French or Italian roasts for a perfect balance of richness. Your taste buds will thank you. Drink it iced or hot, plain or spiked. For spiked coffee, Baileys, Kahlua and Frangelico liqueurs are perfect choices. to enhance your flavor experience, top your coffee with a dollop of fresh whipped cream. Go ahead; add a little to your cake too. We won’t tell.

Chocolate cake is especially delicious when paired with espresso. The acidity of this drink allows the bittersweet of the chocolate to come through. You will experience a bright, crisp feeling on your tongue. Drink it straight or add Sambuca or Anisette. The licorice flavor of both liqueurs pairs remarkably well with this savory treat.

Unconventional and surprising, some beers actually go well with dessert. For instance, stout, a dark, sweet brew pairs perfectly with dark chocolate. Although pairing beer with cake may not sound appealing, it actually tastes great. The chocolate and cappuccino notes from the roasted malt compliment similar flavors in the chocolate cake. The sugary sweetness of the cake contrasts with the bitterness of the beer and each enhances the flavors of other. The brew cleanses the palate between each bite.

Some stout is available in chocolate flavor, which comes from dark roasting malts. For a grownup treat, drop a scoop of vanilla ice cream into your stout and enjoy an ice cream-stout float with your cake.

fruit tarts, Crumbles and bisCotti

Italian winemakers have been crafting and producing more different kinds of sparkling wines than any other country in the world since the Roman times. Varied, tasty and affordable, most of the sparkling wines produced in Italy come from Piedmont, Veneto and Lombardy.

Although sparkling wines pair nicely with a large range of desserts, fruit tarts and crumbles such as apple tart or pear crumble work wonderfully together.

Moscato d’Asti made from Moscato grapes has fewer bubbles than other sparkling wines and is light and crisp. Pair it with house-made Italian biscotti. Add strawberries with fresh whipped cream for a sweet, delightful dessert.

minty desserts and tangy fruit

Desserts with pronounced flavor such as mint pair well with hot chocolate. Separately, mint and chocolate are tasty. together, they are amazing. Grasshopper cake which is made with alternating layers of chocolate cake and mint cream filling served with hot chocolate is a fabulous and tasty pair.

tangy fruits served with hot chocolate give a mouth feel like no other. The contrast between the sweetness of the hot chocolate and the tartness of the fruit enhances the flavors of both. try fresh strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and apples. The tangier the fruit, the more the flavor is heightened.

what's new

What’s the opposite of the the dog days of summer, the cat’s nap of winter? Whatever you call it, these short dreary days require a little imaginative pick-me-up to help you through and we’ve got just the answer.

in the lou?

take yourself back to your childhood summers on the boardwalk or those nights in the local college bar with an evening at TiLT (7401-5 Hazel Avenue at Sutton, Maplewood). Hoping to be open by January (at press time) tILt mixes vintage pinball and skee-ball, including a skeeball league, with a full bar. The food menu will be limited but sourced from area businesses including Dogtown Pizza. Now I wonder if you can earn something useful with all those prize tickets like, perhaps, a martini? Just sayin’.

If it’s comfort food you’re after and you’re craving a real, honest to goodness sandwich

sensation, Monty’s Sandwich Co. (200 N. Broadway, Suite 110, 314-241-7900, stlmontys.com) will please even the most discriminating New York deli lover. At Monty’s they make their own pastrami and corned beef, cure their own bacon, smoke the meats in-house, and use only real meat, never pre-processed lunch meat. The sandwiches, with names like “Bavarian Rhapsody”, “Fidel Castro” and “The Surfer”, start with bread baked fresh daily from local bakeries and are topped with fresh area produce. A selection of homemade soups rotate and are complemented by salads, wraps and burgers. The breakfast sandwiches like the Black Bean, Egg and Cheese are also a huge hit. Just one more reason to head downtown. Open Monday through Friday 7 am - 3 pm. Valentine’s Day shopping just got easier. For over 30 years Apple of your Eye gift shop has been a Webster Groves landmark. They’ve now expanded their charm out to Creve Coeur (713 N. New Ballas Road, 314-5699020, appleofyoureyegifts.com) with an even larger selection of gifts perfect for housewarmings, showers, hostesses, bunco, birthdays and of course Valentine’s Day. For the woman who has everything, (or next to nothing) this is the place to go. Among their many gift suggestions are personalized items including cutting boards (pictured) platters, jewelry and luggage, to name just a few, which are surpassed only by their personal service.

Edgewild Restaurant & Winery (550 Chesterfield Center, Chesterfield, 636-532-0550, edgewildwinery.com) opened in November to huge success and is a great place to take your honey. It’s Napa Valley meets St. Louis, but even better because Edgewild offers wine tastings and fine food (moderately priced) all under one roof. No driving until you’ve had your coffee and dessert and are headed home. EdgeWild is a bonded winery with its own barrel room on premise where they age unfinished wine from west coast and Missouri winemakers and release it under their own private label. This allows them to offer premium wines at a fraction of the typical cost (most bottles are under $30). Their menu includes an eclectic mix from Kahlua Buns and Killer Grilled Cheese, to Bison Meatloaf and wood-fired pizzas. Each is listed with a suggested wine pairing. Open for lunch and dinner they also feature live music, fire pits and an outdoor patio.

Still longing for the ski-lodge atmosphere after your Christmas vacation in Aspen (or Hidden Valley for some of us)? Tahoe Joe’s Famous Steakhouse, (17258 Chesterfield Airport Road, 636-728-1811, tahoejoes.com) is known for what they term “Sierra Mountain dining” in apres-ski ambiance. The perfect place to enjoy your hot toddy this winter, the California chain chose St. Louis to introduce their first restaurant location outside the Golden State. Their specialties are steaks, chops and seafood grilled over a “real almond wood fire.” Entrees are priced in the teens to twenties range, complemented by salads, sandwiches and a few pasta offerings.

Other chains expanding in town include Smashburger, which recently added a Chesterfield location (1670 Clarkson Road) to their St. Charles store. A total of twelve area Smashburgers are scheduled to open over the next four years. Max & Erma’s is also expanding having recently opened its fourth location in the lower level of the West County center.

You’ve now got plenty here to help you through the winter doldrums, but when you’re back home, come to think of it, a little cat nap might also be just the fix.
