The Nativity of St. John, the Baptist.

7th July - 30th Baouna

On this day, the church celebrates the nativity of St. John the Baptist. He whom none born of women was greater. He who kneeled to the Lord Christ while he was still in his mother›s womb, and was worthy to lay his hand upon the head of the Son of God during Baptism. The Holy Bible said about him: «Now Elizabeth›s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her. Now so it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias. And his mother answered and said, ‹No; he shall be called John.› But they said to her, ‹There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.› So they made signs to his father; what he would have him called. And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, ‹His name is John.› And they all marveled. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. He prophesied about his son, saying. ‹you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways.›» (Luke 1:57-76( When he was two years old, the wise men (Magi( came, Herod killed the children, some divulged about this child and the soldiers searched for him to kill him. Zechariah took the child and brought him to the sanctuary, laid him on the altar and told the soldiers, «I have received him from this place». The angel of the Lord caught up the child and brought him to the desert of Ziphana, so the soldiers became enraged and they killed his father Zechariah. For this reason the Lord had said to the Jews: «That on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.» (Matthew 23:35( So the child John grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts more than twenty years living an angelic life, till the day of his manifestation to Israel. (Luke 1:80( And John himself was clothed in camel›s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. (Matthew 3:4( He lived in the wilderness persevering in prayers and asceticism, until the Lord ordered him, to fulfill the prophesies, to preach to the people about the coming of the Savior of the World. For he was sent from God, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. (John 1:6-8( Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, Annas and Caiaphas being high priests, the Word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: «The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‹Prepare the way of the LORD, make His paths straight. Every valley shall be filled

and every mountain and hill brought low; and the crooked places shall be made straight and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.› « (Luke 3:1-6(

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, «Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!» (Matthew 3:1-2( Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. (Matthew 3:5-6(

While the people were waiting, and thinking in their hearts about John if he was the Christ, John answered, saying to them all, «I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.» (Luke 3:16-17(

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, «I have need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?» But Jesus answered and said to him, «Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.» Then he allowed Him. Then Jesus, when He had been baptized, came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, «This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.» (Matthew 3:13-17( (Luke 3:2022(

Then John›s disciples came to him and said, «Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified; behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!» John answered and said, «A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‹I am not the Christ,› but, ‹I have been sent before Him.› He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom›s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease. He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony. He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand. He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.» (John 3:26-36( But when John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, «Brood of vipers! Who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not think to say to yourselves, ‹We have Abraham as our father.› For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. (Matthew

3:7-10( (Luke 3:7-9(

When Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great, married Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, against all the Laws, St. John the Baptist came to him. He admonished him for his transgression and all the evil things that he was doing. So Herod ordered, according to the instigation of Herodias the adulterer, to seize John, chain him and imprison him in the fortress called Macronda. John remained in this jail for a year, without Herod being able to slay him. His disciples visited their teacher, frequently and courageously, in prison. As he did not neglect his duties toward them, proving to them that Jesus was the expected Christ. When the news of the wonders that our Savior did noised everywhere, John wanted his disciples to be eye witnesses to the wonders of Christ, to be confirmed in their faith in him. While he was in prison, John sent two of his disciples to Christ, who said to Him, «Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?» Jesus answered and said to them, «Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind receive their sight and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.» (Matthew 11:2-6( As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, «What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings› houses. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written: ‹Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.› Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear! But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, and saying: ‹We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; we mourned to you, And you did not lament.› For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‹He has a demon.› The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‹Look, a gluttonous man and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!› But wisdom is justified by her children.» (Matthew 11:7-19( The Lrd Christ, to Whom is the Glory, also said about John the Baptist: «He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.» (John 5:35( Herodias desired to get rid of John the Baptist, so she executed her scheme during the celebration of Herod›s birthday. When Herod›s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, «Give me John the Baptist›s head here on a platter.» And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him at the table, he commanded it to be given to her. So he sent and had John beheaded

in prison. And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus. When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart. (Matthew 14:2-13( The joy of the people celebrating Herod›s birthday turned into sorrow. As of the head, it flew up from their hands and was crying out saying: «It is not right for you to take your brother›s wife.» The martyrdom of St. John took place at the end of the thirty-first or at the beginning of the thirty-second year of the Christ. The life of this Saint was like that of the angels in purity. He was filled with the Holy Spirit while he was in his mother›s womb, and was martyred for his witnessing to the truth. May his prayers be with us and Glory be to God forever. Amen.

The

Departure of St. Kyrillos (Cyril) the First, the TwentyFourth Pope of Alexandria.

10th July - 3rd Abib

On this day, of the year 160 A.M. (June 27th, 444 A.D.(, the great father, the pillar of faith and the lamp of the Orthodox church, St. Kyrillos (Cyril( the First, the Alexandrian Pope, and the twentyfourth Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, departed.

This saint was the son of the sister of Pope Theophilus (23rd patriarch(. He was raised by his uncle at the school of Alexandria where he was educated in its Theological and Philosophical subjects needed to defend Christianity and the Orthodox faith. After he learned a great deal of these subjects, his uncle sent him to the monastery of St. Macarius in the wilderness. There, he became a disciple to a righteous old monk called Sarabamon. He taught him the church books, and the sayings of the pure fathers. He trained his mind and body by practicing the works of righteousness and virtues for a period of time.

After he spent in the wilderness five years, Pope Theophilus sent him to Abba Sarapion, the honorable bishop, so he increased in wisdom and knowledge. Shortly after, the bishop returned him to Alexandria. His uncle was rejoiced, ordained him a deacon, appointed him a preacher in the cathedral and made him his scribe. Whenever Kyrillos gave a sermon, he captured the hearts of his listeners with his eloquence, fluency, and his strong influence. Since that time, he became well known for his vast knowledge, his great righteousness, and his deep influence in his teaching.

When his uncle Pope Theophilus departed in the 18th of Babah 128 A.M. (October 15th, 412 A.M.(, they enthroned this father in his place on the 20th day of Babah, 128 A.M. (Oct. 17th, 412 A.D.(. The church was illumined with his knowledge, and he gave special attention to resisting paganism and defending the Christian faith. He started to refute the falsity of Emperor Julian the Infidel in his ten essays that had been written after his apostasy. These were the favorite readings of the pagan young people of Alexandria and their pride, for they believed that it destroyed the principles of the Christian faith. Pope Kyrillos refuted them in terms that were clear, strong and convincing. He set out to rebut the heretics until he was able to close their churches and seize their contents. He ordered the expulsion of the Jews from Alexandria which led to a disturbance and confrontation between the Jews and the Christians. This led to the widening of the contention between the governor and this great saint. Because

of his strong devotion to the Christian ethics and teachings, he found himself compelled to ask for reconciliation with the governor. However, the governor refused to accept the reconciliation, and the conflict between them continued for a period of time.

When the heresy of Nestorius, Patriarch of Constantinople, emerged, a Universal Council convened for him. He denied that the Virgin was the mother of God (Theotokos(. Two hundred bishops assembled in the city of Ephesus during the reign of Emperor Theodosius II, known by Theodosius the Less. St. Cyril (Kyrillos(, Pope of Alexandria, presided over this council. He debated Nestorius, explained to him his heretic opinion, and threatened him with excommunication and exile from his Chair, if he did not change his erroneous opinion. St. Kyrillos composed twelve discourses wherein he explained the true faith, refuting the error of Nestorius.

Anba John, Patriarch of Antioch, and some of the bishops of the East disagreed with him, taking Nestorius› side. Nevertheless, shortly after, they came back and agreed with Kyrillos who was victorious over the enemies of the church. He wrote many discourses and valuable epistles, confirming in them, that God the Word is One Nature, One Will, and One Person incarnated. He anathematized anyone who separated Christ or differed from this true faith. The Emperor exiled Nestorius in the year 435 A.D. to the land of Egypt, and remained in the city of Akhmim until his death in the year 440 A.D.

From the monumental works of Pope Kyrillos was the commentary of the Holy Books. When he finished his strife, he fell sick for a short time and departed in peace. He remained on the Alexandrian Chair for thirty-one years, eight months, and ten days. May his prayers be with us. Amen.

Meditations on the Holy Liturgy Bible ReadingFifth Sunday of the Blessed month of Baounah John 6: 5-14

“So, when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain” John 6:12

In This reflection, let us meditate on Spiritual Fulfilment …

Just as the spiritual hunger has it symptoms which might reflect the physical hunger … also, the spiritual fulfilment has similar appearances to the physical fulfilment from hunger … in the physical fulfilment, one feels full of … comfort … relaxation … and in the spiritual fulfilment there is comfort … peace … with a very essential difference … every physical fulfilment will be followed by hunger (again( … but spiritual fulfilment will not be follow by hunger … with the physical body fulfilment, one still worries about (daily( food … and continues to think of tomorrow … but with the spiritual fulfilment there are no more worries … and man will not ponder of tomorrow’s problems … the

person who is satiated spiritually, will be fulfilled of all wisdom and every joy … assured and will not ponder or troubled …

+ In Spiritually Satiated … is fulfilment …

Fulfilment is the opposite of emptiness … the spiritually hungry person has a void … a grim void in need of fulfilment … however, often this fulfilment is with matters which increase the void … exactly like a balloon … the more you inflate it with air the larger is the size of the (balloon full of air( …

This void is one of the most troublesome pat-time for Satan and the world …

Moses … at the time of pharaoh, he was filled with the wisdom of the Egyptians … but had this void within him … in his childhood he tasted the sweetness of spiritual fulfilment … he sampled the company of God through his mother and sister … but when he became a young man, he found himself alone with a void (within( and filled with nothing but the wisdom of the world which was of no benefit … he tried to satisfy his eagerness and longings to do well to his people (the Jews( … but alas, the void within did not produce something of value … produced quarrels … killing … violence … then running away to the wilderness and there for forty years, he started to be filled with every spiritual wisdom and blessing which made him eligible for the mission which God has prepared for him … he learned to be calm … he learned to be reposed … and became very patient more than any other human on earth … he learned the true wisdom … he learned patience and endurance … he was fulfilled and (spiritually( satiated from within and therefore overflowed on others too …

David … great difference between him and his brothers … his brothers were men of war and fighting … but David was a shepherd of sheep … he spent his days in the wilderness in a holy companionship and true enjoyment of God and a life full of praise and prayers … a man (spiritually( fulfilled ... when he stood before Goliath … his brothers the soldiers were found to be scared and petrified for withn them is a void … but David, very calmly with strength and assurance faces Goliath with a true (spiritual( fulfilment with God’s love, faith and care …

Then look also at King Saul … the void within made him in a troubled state … wanting to kill … take revenge … loses his mind and self-poise … but David, even when escaping from Saul was

strong and not hesitant … loving from (true( fulfilment … forgiving and merciful and his heart did not knoe hate or malice … for such has no place in his (spiritually( fulfilled heart.

Also, look at Paul when he was fulfilled and satiated from God … and compare between him and Saul of Tarsus who was mentored and taught by Gamaliel the teacher of Judaism laws … (Saul( was filled of over zealously … but in reality he was full of emptiness within … he tried to fill this void and emptiness with persecuting the (early( church but with no avail … but when he was (spiritually( satiated and fulfilled within … he became a different person … an apologist … (spiritually( fulfilled … an evangelist … an apostle …

The person who is void and empty (within( always tries t fill this void with troublesome substitutes … will gossip about others … reflects on hate and retaliation … envious of others … seeks the (false( appearances and all are just facades with a spiritual void and dryness …

Many are the ways which the empty and (spiritually( void person will try to fill this void, such as raucous music … attracting attention with lured unsuitable clothing … provocative films such as movies of extreme violence and sex … gluttony of food without limits … false and vain facades … and in the complete opposite, the person who is satiated from God and has (spiritual( fulfilment … does not care for false facades … and does not care, if people ignore him or not … fond of tranquillity and calm activities … and will not be pleased with sings of violence and (sexual( permissiveness …

+ In Spiritual Satiation is Peace

The person who is spiritually satiated and fulfilled, you will find he or she will not be troubled easily or upset … but the person who is spiritually hungry … is frightened and troubled easily … the smallest issue will distress him or her and will agonise over it and loses sleep and comfort …

Consider Elisha and Gehazi (his servant( … the enemy armies surrounded where Elisha lived and Gehazi was frightened and troubled and thought it was a painful end and maybe he regretted becoming a servant to Elisha the man of God? … but Elisha in an absolute calmness and assurity, prayed to God that He opens the servants eyes to see the mountain full of chariots of fire protecting them (2Kings 6:17( … those who are with them are greater than those who against them …

Look at Paul and Silas … in the darkness and coldness of the prison … they were praising God … amazing calmness and assurance … there are no more fear of anything or any troubles (Acts 15:25(.

Job the righteous … no man has been tested as Job was tested … he lost everything … and despite all this, he did not loose his calmness, humility or his adherence to being righteous … and in complete assurance and faith he said his famous words … “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord” … “shall we accept good from God and shall we not accept adversity” … Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return” (Job 1:21 and Job 2:10(. The saintly fathers (of the church( lived in the wilderness and crevasses of the land … lived in caves … befriended wild animals and earth crawlers … but within, they had calmness … and amazing assurances … it is the fulfilment of God … the inner satiation which made them do not care for anything what ever it was (except for God(.

And you, beloved … tell when will you stay in a life of spiritual hunger … the inner void and emptiness … a life of worries and troubles … tell when will you ponder the world searching for drilled wells which produce no waters … tell when, will you continue concentrating (only( on your physical comforts … and the fulfilment of your lusts and physical senses … your outer appearance … haven’t you had enough of all such things? The time is now, to start fulfilling your hungry spiritual needs … but how?? … nothing will satisfy as the Word of God … in the holy bible … in your spiritual readings … make for the Word of God a (dedicated( Holy time everyday … in it you study the Holy Bible … and concentrate on spiritual readings which of benefit … to you, your offspring’s and all your family … be assured, if your children are not fulfilled and satiated from the Word of God fully, they will go outside and seek an outer fulfilment (of the world( … you fully know what food the world is offering to our children??? Where is the family altar … an altar of prayers … do you allocate specific times for prayers … in the morning and evening and during the day … is there a communal prayers with all the family members … or the only common item you have with your family is watching television and various methods of amusements. Beloved, you will not be satiated and fulfilled unless you have a strong relationship with God … start, now in your household … while the chance is still possible before your sons and daughters are lost (to the world( … youngsters are melting in the whirlpool of this world and it will become very difficult then to bring them back to a Holy life with God … Beloved … physical Bodley fulfilment … has no (true( blessings … But the spiritual fulfilment and satiation … from the five loaves and two fishes you will be filled and you shall carry with you 12 baskets of the fragments (John 6:12( … which will satisfy you and your family and everyone around you without any limits.

The Martyrdom of Sts. Peter and Paul, the Apostles. Feast of the Holy Apostles 12th July - 5th Abib

On this day, the two great saints Peter and Paul, were martyred. Peter was from Bethsaida, and he was a fisherman. The Lord chose him on the second day of His baptism after He chose Andrew his brother. He had fervent faith and strong zeal. When the Lord asked His disciples: “Who do men say that I am?” So they answered, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” ... Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Mat. 16:13-20( After he received the grace of the Holy Spirit, he went around in the world preaching of the crucified Christ, and he converted many to the faith. God wrought great and innumerable signs and wonders by his hands. He wrote two catholic Epistles to the believers. When he came to the city of Rome, he found there St. Paul the Apostle. Through their preaching, most of the people of Rome believed, so Nero seized Peter and commanded to crucify him. Peter asked them to crucify him head downwards, and he delivered up his soul into the hand of the Lord.

As of St. Paul the Apostle, he was born in Tarsus two years before the advent of the Savior. He was a Jew, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee. He was well learned in the Law of the Torah, and he was jealous for it. He persecuted the Christians. When they stoned St. Stephen, Paul was guarding the clothes of those who were stoning him. He took from Caiaphas, the high priest, letters to the synagogues of Damascus, to bind the Christians and bring them to Jerusalem. As he journeyed, he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” Then He ordered him to go to Ananias in Damascus, who baptized him, and he received his sight at once. He was filled by the grace of the Comforter, and he proclaimed boldly the Faith. He went around in the world preaching of the crucified Christ. He suffered much beatings, imprisonment, and was bound with fetters, some of which are mentioned in the book of the Acts of the Apostles and in his Epistles. He went to Rome and proclaimed the Faith there and many believed by his hands. He wrote for them the Epistle to the Romans which was the first of his fourteen Epistles. Finally, Nero seized him, tortured him severely and ordered his head cut off. While St. Paul was passing along with the executioner, he met a damsel who was a kinswoman of the Emperor Nero, and who had believed through him. She walked along with St. Paul, weeping, to where they carried out the sentence. He comforted her and asked her for her veil. He wrapped his head with the veil, and asked her to return back. The executioner cut off his head and left it wrapped in the veil of the young girl, and that was in the year 67 A.D. The young girl met the executioner on his way back to the Emperor, and asked him about Paul and he replied, “He is lying where I left him and his head is wrapped in your veil.” She told him, “You are lying, for he and Peter had just passed by me, they were arrayed in the apparel of kings, and had crowns decorated with jewels on their heads, and they gave me my veil, and here it is.” She showed it to the executioner, and to those who were with him. They marvelled, and believed on the Lord Christ. God wrought by the hands of Peter and Paul many great signs and wonders, that they even carried the sick out into the streets ... that as Peter came by ... his shadow might fall on them ... and they were all healed. (Acts 5:15( The handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from Paul’s body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. (Acts 19:12( May their prayers be with us, and Glory be to God forever. Amen.

THE FEAST OF THE APOSTLES

The Church celebrates the commemoration of the martyrdom of St. Peter and St. Paul on the 5th of Abib, which is the 12th of July. This feast is known in our Church by the name of “The Feast of the Apostles”. Its date is unchanged every year. The Church venerates these two apostles very profoundly; and raises them and honours them exceedingly; especially in the prayer of “the partition” or “the division” which pertains to the fast of the apostles and to the feast of the apostles, which we pray during the holy mass.

These two saints represent two distinguished kinds with regards to personality, mission, and style. Each one of them has distinct characteristics.

THE POINTS OF DIFFERENCE

Saint Peter was among the first whom the Lord had chosen to work with Him (Matt. 10(. Saint Paul was not among the twelve, and not even among the seventy apostles, but the Lord chose him lastly, after the resurrection and years after the choice of Matthias…… He did not follow Christ during His predication on earth. He rather said about that: “Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God” (1 Cor. 15: 8 -9(. And although he was the last in his call, yet he “labored more abundantly than they all” (1 Cor. 15:10(. That shows that it is not a matter of precedence, but according to the amount of weariness from exertion for God.

A person may not be the most ancient among the workers in ministry, and nevertheless he may be the strongest of all the workers. John the Baptist was not the first prophet in the Old Testament, but he was the last of them in their chronological order. Nevertheless it was said that “among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist” (Matt. 11:11(

The apostle Peter was a married man. It was mentioned in the Gospel that Christ healed his step-mother from fever (Matt. 8: 14-15(. In his journeys for the predication, he wandered accompanied by his wife as a sister (1 Cor. 9:5(. But the apostle Paul was a virgin. (1 Cor. 7:7(. He called for the preference of virginity. “But each one has his own gift from God”, “as the Lord has called each one…… Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called” (1 Cor. 7: 7,17,20(

That proves that the Lord calls everybody to His service, whether they are married like Peter, or virgins like Paul. Peter began his life with the Lord Christ with love, confidence, and faith. But on the contrary: Paul began by enmity, as a persecutor of the Church and of everyone who followed Christ, so that the Lord, when He met him on the road to Damascus, began his conversation with him by reprimanding him saying: “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” (Acts 9:4(. Saint Peter was a simple man, a fisherman (Matt. 4:18(. He was ignorant and was not instructed into culture or science. He is one of whom “God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise” (1 Cor. 27(. It was said of him, of him and saint John, “that they were uneducated and untrained men” (Acts 4:13(. But Saint Paul was one of the learned of his age, who was educated at the University of Tarsus, and brought up at the feet of Gamaliel (Acts 22:3(.
