Friday 13 August 2021 IMPORTANT/PLEASE READ Dear Parents/Carers The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in schools shut all across the world. Globally, over 1.2 billion children are out of the classroom. While countries are at different points in their COVID-19 infection rates, more than 1.2 billion children worldwide in 186 countries are currently affected by school closures due to the pandemic. As a result, education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of online learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. Last year was saved due to online classes, which would otherwise have been sacrificed. Teachers, schools and students did a lot of adjusting and with this sudden shift away from the classroom in many parts of the globe, the adoption of online learning will most likely become the “new norm”. We are all aware of the challenges online learning is posing for both teachers and students. While teachers need to put in intensive work and time to design their classroom instruction, students need to support their learning while being online. In 2020, with lockdowns and online learning being introduced to our students, more relaxed conditions were allowed in relation to uniform, grooming and school rules in general. Meanwhile, we have worked very hard to establish procedures for remote lessons, to encourage good student engagement in these difficult circumstances and to attend to any challenges and issues around online learning, such as technological difficulties, online safety and practices and adaptability. Unfortunately, it is now evident that students’ engagement is negatively affected when students join online classes still in bed, in pyjamas and with un-brushed hair and unwashed face. Students also switch off cameras and they become easily distracted from their lesson. Now that online learning is more than likely to be an integral component of our students’ learning journey and that our students are more used to this arrangement, we would need to attend to issues of disengagement and low academic performance. The general consensus is that a structured environment is required because children are more easily distracted. To get the full benefit of online learning, there needs to be a concerted effort to provide this structure. Therefore, we would like to establish formal classroom environment during delivery of online lessons. We strongly believe that it would facilitate the teaching-learning process and create a formal classroom setting for our students.

All students from Foundation to Year 12 must closely observe and follow these guidelines during online sessions: 1. Students must be dressed in School uniform for live online lessons from Foundation to Year 12 -

Wearing the uniform will help students focus in the virtual classroom as they are more likely to feel they are actually at school more than just being in regular clothes.

-

Wearing the uniform will ensure there is some form of normalcy. Wearing the uniform is just like bringing a notebook or a pencil into the classroom; it just shows that the student is ready.

-

Students will not be allowed to wear pyjamas or other cosy home attire, hats, caps, bandanas, hoods of any type, sweatbands or sunglasses while participating in class.

2. Students must be well groomed (face and teeth are washed and hair is brushed) 3. Students will be sitting up out of bed, preferably at a desk or table during class times. 4. Students must turn on their cameras during class time. -

Requiring students to turn on their cameras will lead to more active engagement and better learning.

-

Turning on cameras causes students to get less distracted by objects or phones.

-

Turning on cameras offers opportunities to create a sense of connection and community, to establish accountability and to mirror face-to-face instructional contexts.

-

When teachers look at blank squares during a Zoom class session, it may feel less personal, disconnected and disconcerting. It doesn’t allow them to “read the room”, to gauge students’ understanding. Teachers may even be uncertain if students who are not joining with their cameras on are engaged at all.

-

It is almost impossible for teachers, when faced with a sea of blank screens, to gauge how their students are reacting to challenging material.

-

The lack of ambient feedback when the Zoom camera is off negatively affects learning.

-

Teachers benefit from receiving nonverbal cues from their students, such as smiles, frowns, head nods, looks of confusion and looks of boredom, so that they can evaluate their teaching in real time and adjust accordingly to improve student learning.

-

Students definitely benefit from being able to see each other on screen. Seeing each other helps build trust and rapport with other students and help them to develop a sense of identification with others in their group.

-

The social context of living classrooms, the often-invisible human connection that reinforces learning, is missing for students who do not switch on their cameras.

-

Being able to hear and see each other in real time helped construct a ‘more complete picture’ of their peers.”

5. Students must use their real name (no nicknames or movie character names. Teachers are being worn down in a battle to enforce school rules and guidelines in live remote lessons and it is absolutely exhausting and really wearing. It is a battle they should not be fighting in the first place. These instructions will be enforced commencing Monday 16 August 2021. Students, who will not follow these guidelines, will be asked to leave the virtual classroom. They will be allowed to return back when they adhere to these guidelines. Teachers will notify parents and carers via SEQTA direqt messages. We kindly ask all parents and carers to support our teachers and ensure students attend all live lessons in school uniform, well-groomed, sitting at a desk or at a table and not in bed and must have cameras on. I thank you in anticipation of your support for our teachers and for your children’s education. We are praying that SMCOC Staff, students and families stay safe and healthy. May the Lord keep SMCOC’s community protected and strengthen all Victorians throughout this difficult time. Please contact me if you have any concerns or need further clarifications. Yours sincerely, Father Tadros Sharobeam College Principal
