Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun”
The Danforth Chapel is one of two chapels on campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The Thad Buckner Building is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.
The Esplanades, totaling 1.5 miles, line the west campus of Florida Southern College. The “covered walkways” connect the structures, actually weaving in and out, providing the pattern for the complex.
Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.
Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.
Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.
2
Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.
In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

DR. ANNE B. KERR College President Since her appointment
as Florida Southern College’s seventeenth president in 2004, D r. A n ne K e r r ’s v i s ion a r y leadership has enhanced the student experience on campus and increased the college’s national prominence. Under her direction, the institution has renewed its commitment to educate the whole person—academically, socially, spiritually and physically—in order to insure that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr oversaw implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for the College that was designed to enrich all facets of our student-centered culture. Opportunities for active learning and leadership were increased; innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction were prioritized; and the College’s scholar-athlete program became a national model for NCAA Division II athletic programs. Recent college improvements include ongoing restoration projects on the Frank Lloyd Wright campus and the construction of a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian House for use as a Tourism and Education Center, which will be the first Wright design built
2011-12 Men’s Golf since 1966. Other new construction includes the two-building Barnett Residential Complex and the Christoverson Humanities Building (all three designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern), the McKay Archives Center, the Blanton Nursing Building, the Rinker Technology Center, and TûTû’s Café (located in the Roux Library). Further improvements include the complete renovation of the student dining facility (Wynee’s Bistro), residence hall and campus-wide technology upgrades, and a campus beautification project featuring dozens of interconnected plazas and gardens. Dr. Kerr graduated from Mercer University and received her M.S. and Ph.D. from Florida State University. Prior to assuming the Presidency at Florida Southern, she served as Vice President for Advancement both at the University of Richmond and at Rollins College. She has held numerous volunteer leadership roles, and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank, All Saints’ Academy, EarthLinked Technologies, Inc., the Polk Museum of Art, and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. She recently completed a two-year term as president of the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. Dr. Kerr and her husband, Roy, have a seventeen-year-old son, Ed, who plays baseball for All Saints’ Academy. Dr. Roy Kerr is a retired professor of Spanish and a baseball historian, whose recent publications include The Loving of the Game: a Baseball Memoir (2007); Sliding Billy Hamilton: the Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Man (2010), and Roger Connor: Home Run King of Nineteenth-Century Baseball (2011).
The Christoverson Humanities Building, which opened Fall 2011, is the latest of the numerous additions to the campus under the leadership of President Kerr. A Tourism & Education Center, based on a Frank Lloyd Wright design, is currently under construction.

PETE MEYER Director of Athletics
Now in his fourth year (201112) as Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College, Pete Meyer saw Moccasin teams enjoy another successful year in 2010-11. The women’s golf team finished third at the NCA A Division II Championship. The swimming team claimed four individual event NCA A championships (Mary O’Sullivan – 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, Jeb Halfacre – 200-yard backstroke and men’s 400-yard medley relay team). Twelve of FSC’s programs participated in NCAA postseason competition. FSC won Sunshine State Conference titles in men’s cross country (14th straight) and women’s basketball (regular season and postseason tournament), won the SSC women’s Mayor’s Cup Award and tied for second in the men’s Mayors’ Cup. That success combined to give the Moccasins a 19th-place finish, tops among SSC schools, in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports/ NACDA Cup standings and their 10th top 25 finish in the program’s history. Meyer also returned to the coaching ranks in 2010-11, taking command of the baseball program 12 games into the season and guiding the Moccasins to a final season record of 32-15. In 2009-10, FSC won its 12th NCAA men’s golf title and 27th national title overall and produced its first national champion in swimming (Jeb Halfacre – 200-yard backstroke). Eleven programs were represented in NCAA postseason competition, with men’s golf, basketball and cross country teams capturing SSC titles. In Meyer’s first year as AD (2008-09), Moccasin teams produced three SSC championships (men’s cross country, men’s basketball, softball) and a fifth-place national finish in women’s
As head coach of the Moccasin baseball team, Coach Pete Meyer led FSC to the 2005 NCAA National Championship. It was the ninth national title won by FSC baseball program.

2011-12 Men’s Golf golf. Eleven FSC teams went to NCAA postseason competition. Named to the AD position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, putting the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center, as well as the water ski program and campus intramurals under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, also served as assistant athletics director for Webb from February of 2006 until his AD appointment. In his previous stint as baseball coach (2002-08), Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, guiding the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title in 2005 with a 51-11 record. His head coaching record at Florida Southern is 282-121-1, while his overall record as a head coach is 321-151-1. Thirty-eight Moccasin baseball players have been drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure as head coach. Before officially assuming the reigns of head baseball coach in June of 2002, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under legendary head coach Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III program in 1991. His Oglethorpe teams won Eastern Division titles in the SCAC in each of his two seasons (1992-93). He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children - 23-year old Ross, 21-year-old Mitchell, who is enrolled at FSC, and 20-year old Megan, who attends Trinity University in Texas.

2011-12 Men’s Golf
COACH DOUG GORDIN Doug Gordin has been men’s head
golf coach at Florida Southern since 1995. He has led the Mocs to five NCA A Division II championships. In addition to the team titles, the Mocs have produced three individual national champions under Gordin in Matt Saglio (1999), Jeff Klauk (2000) and Steve Sokol (2001). Gordin added national championship number five to his resume in 2010. The Moccasins took the lead for good early in the final round and went on to win by seven strokes, claiming their 12th national title in men’s golf and the 27th overall in school history. They also won their 16th Sunshine State Conference men’s golf championship. With five national titles to his credit, Gordin ranks sixth among all NCAA coaches in national championships won. The man he succeeded at Florida Southern, Charley Matlock, ranks fifth with seven national titles. The Moccasins’ other national titles under Gordin came in 1996 and an unprecedented three straight in 1998, 1999 and 2000. After his first NCAA championship in 1996, Gordin was named the GCAA National Coach of the Year, an honor he would again win in 1998, 1999 and 2000. As a further tribute to his career, Gordin was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Golf Coaches Association of America in January, 2001, where he joined his father, Dr. Richard Gordin, a member of the inaugural Class of 1980. The younger Gordin is one of just three NCAA Division II coaches among the GCAA inductees. In his first season at FSC (1995-96), Gordin was named South Region Coach of the Year, as well as National Coach of the Year, by both Golf Week Magazine and the GCAA after the Mocs laid claim to their eighth national title. Before coming to Florida Southern, Gordin was the golf coach at Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, Georgia, for 13 years. While at Georgia Southern, he coached two PGA players (Jodie Mudd and Gene Sauers), led the Eagles to four conference championships and six runner-up titles, coached five GCAA All-Americans and was named the NCAA South District coach of the year and conference coach of the year an unprecedented four times. Now in his 34th year overall as a collegiate coach, Gordin is no stranger to success on the links. Prior to coaching at Georgia Southern in 1981, he served two years on the staff at the University of Alabama under Conrad Rehling and one season as the head coach at Campbell University. As an undergraduate, Gordin played for his father at Ohio Wesleyan. The younger Gordin served as team captain his senior season when the Battlin’ Bishops finished sixth at the NCAA tournament. In the fall of 2002, Gordin was honored by his alma mater with the Robert Strimer Award for unusually significant contributions to intercollegiate athletics. In 2007 he was named to the FSC Sports Hall of Fame. A native of Delaware, Ohio, Gordin was inducted into the Delaware Hayes High School Hall of Fame in October of 2010. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 1978, Gordin joined the staff at

Alabama, serving as assistant coach and assistant pro for the Crimson Tide. While in Tuscaloosa he earned his master’s degree. Gordin is a teaching consultant to the National Golf Foundation and is a member of the NCAA-USGA Relations Committee. He has been active in the GCAA for several years, even serving a stint as the organization’s national president. He is also a past chairman of the NCAA District III-South selection committee. Gordin and his daughter, Gretchen, reside in Lakeland. She is a senior at the University of Florida.

FIVE MOCS ON 2011 PGA TOUR
Barney Barnett, Lee Janzen, Leon Sikes, Jr., and George Jenkins (seated), admire Lee’s 1993 U.S. Open Championship Trophy during the “Pop” Sikes Golf Day.
“POP” SIKES GOLF DAY Started in 1976 by the late Jimmie Sikes as a way to honor his father, Leon “Pop” Sikes, and help support the Florida Southern golf program, the “Pop” Sikes Golf Day has helped enable the Moccasin golf team to win 12 NCAA Division II National Championships, as well as six national runner-up finishes and three third place finishes. “None of the success that the golf team has had could have been possible without the “Pop” Sikes Golf Day,” says former FSC coach Charley Matlock. “It’s because of the love and concern of the Sikes family that the Golf Day has been so successful. From the beginning, they made sure this was a first-class event.” Along with the Sikes family, others have contributed to this annual event. George Jenkins, founder of Publix Super Markets, opened his Lone Palm Golf Club facilities each year to stage the event. John Mack and Clayton Lyons helped to organize the event in its infant years, while Joe Hodge, Head Pro at Lone Palm, took charge of the organizational details at the golf course. Held annually in October, “Pop” Sikes Golf Day has raised approximately $1.25 million and has averaged over 100 participants since its inception.
For the 2011 professional golf season, five former Florida Southern standouts – Marco Dawson, Lee Janzen, Jeff Klauk, Rocco Mediate and Darron Stiles – played on either the PGA or the Nationwide Tour. Dawson, a teammate of Janzen and Mediate at Florida Southern, divided his 2011 season between the PGA and Nationwide Tours. In his career, he has earned over $5 million combined from both tours. He was a member of the Moccasins’ 1982 and 1985 national championship teams. A three-time All-American and the 1986 NCAA Division II champion, Janzen is a two-time winner of the U.S. Open (1993 and 1998). He has won a total of eight PGA events during his career and earned over $15 million since joining the tour in 1989. He played on the 1985 and 1986 national championship teams. Klauk had an outstanding rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2009, but a back injury limited him to 21 just events over the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Nevertheless, he’s earned $1.4 million in his first three seasons. He was the individual NCAA champion on the Moccasins’ 2000 national championship team. Mediate, a two-time All-American in 1983 and 1984, is bestknown for his dramatic final round and playoff battle with Tiger Woods in the 2008 U.S. Open. He teamed with noted sports author John Feinstein to write a book about the event entitled “Are You Kidding Me?” He has six PGA wins to his credit and has earned nearly $16.6 million in his career. Stiles played primarily on the Nationwide Tour in 2011 and has earned a combined $3.1 million on the Nationwide and PGA Tours. He was a three-time All-American at Florida Southern (1993, 1994, 1995). With the induction of Dawson and Stiles in 2010, all five former Moccasins are now members of the FSC Athletics Hall of Fame.
