Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.
Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.
In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

Kerr College President Since her unanimous appointment as its 17th president in 2004, Dr. Kerr has provided Florida Southern College with extraordinary vision and leadership that is enhancing the student experience and increasing the College’s national prominence. Pete Meyer Director of Athletics In 2008-09, Pete Meyer served his first year as the Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College. Named to the position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. Since 1972, he is just the fourth person to occupy the position of athletics director at Florida Southern - following Hal Smeltzly (1972-2000), Mike Roberts (2000-01) and Webb (200108). Meyer was the Moccasins’ head baseball coach from 2002 through 2008. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, as the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center as well as the the water ski program and campus intramurals also fall under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, had served as assistant athletics director for Webb since February of 2006, in addition to maintaining his baseball coaching duties. In his position as assistant athletics director, he was responsible for acquiring major gifts for the athletic department that included funding and equipment for the athletics weight room and upgrading the baseball and men’s basketball locker rooms. He coordinated all of the athletic department’s fundraising efforts, coordinated athletic facilities and served as game administrator for various
As part of her quest for excellence, Dr. Kerr commissioned a master plan that outlines the College’s vision for the campus and includes numerous facility transformations. These include the newly completed Barnett Residential Life Center and the soon-to-be completed state-of-the-art Christoverson Humanities Building, both designed by world-renowned architect Robert A. M. Stern; TuTu’s Cyber Café in the Roux Library and the adjacent McKay Archives Center; the expansion of wireless Internet access, campus-wide technology upgrades, and the Rinker Technology Center, currently under construction; renovations to the student dining facility and residence halls; as well as a restoration of our world renowned Frank Lloyd Wright designed campus. Prior to assuming the presidency at Florida Southern, Dr. Kerr was Vice President for Advancement at both Rollins College and the University of Richmond. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Florida State University. She has held a number of community volunteer leadership roles and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Central Florida and All Saints’ Academy. An avid supporter of the arts, she is the current president of the Board of Trustees of the Polk Museum of Art. She is in the first year of her term as president of the Sunshine State Conference. She and her husband Dr. Roy Kerr have a fifteen-year-old son Ed. Roy Kerr has authored two books about baseball entitled “The Loving of the Game” (2007) and “Sliding Billy Hamilton: The Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Hitter” (2009).
home events. He also served as Florida Southern’s representative on the Sunshine State Conference Marketing Committee. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, keeping the Moccasin program among the elite in NCAA Division II. In 2005, he guided the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title with a 51-11 record and was the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II Coach-of-the-Year. In addition to his national coaching honors from the ABCA, Meyer also was South Region, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Diamond Club (scouting organization) Coach-of-the-Year. His head coaching record at Florida Southern was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirtyfour Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at FSC. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under the legendary head coach, Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III baseball program in 1991. He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 21-year old Ross, 19-year old Mitchell and 18-year old Megan.

2009 Florida Southern Men’s Soccer Preview Florida Southern’s first goal in 2009 is to put 2008 completely behind them. It was a year of frustration for the Moccasins, who had hoped to build upon their strong finish to 2007, but were snake-bit from the start. The year hadn’t even begun before the Mocs lost one starter to a season-ending injury, and it proved to be a harbinger of things to come. By the end of the season, 16 different players had started at least five games, but only four of them survived every match, and only two were able to start all 15 games. Through it all, however, the Mocs stayed competitive until the very end, and in truth, played well enough to win many of their losses, if not most. There was a 2-1 win against Nova Southeastern (ranked #10 in the final regional poll); one-goal losses to Montevallo, Flagler, Saint Leo, Barry and Palm Beach Atlantic (all ranked between #4 and #9); and a 3-1 loss to West Florida (ranked #3 and a South Region qualifier), a game in which the Mocs actually out-shot the Argonauts. In fact, out-shooting their opponent was something that happened quite often, leaving the Mocs right on the edge of a pretty good season. But enough of that. It’s a new year, and Florida Southern has a lot of new faces. In fact, there are more new ones than old. No current Moccasin has been with the team more than two years, and there’s only one senior on the roster. Two of the four returning starters are sophomores who didn’t even play the entire year in 2008, so even some of the veterans are relatively new. How it all plays out remains to be seen, but with more speed and athleticism than they’ve had in several years, the Moccasins are eager to tackle a new set of challenges in 2009. UP FRONT Florida Southern returns just one forward from last year’s roster, but that one happens to be their leading scorer, Givi Kokaia. Not even a full-time starter, he tallied seven goals and two assists, giving him 25 career points in 22 games. With the graduation of two-time scoring leader Patrik Dandanell, the junior may have to shoulder an even bigger load this season. While the Moccasins would like to get Kokaia the ball more often, they’d

He started every match in 2008, but this year will be moving to the midfield line. also like for someone else to step forward and give him some help. That’s where a pair of freshmen come in, and they’ll have a chance to contribute right away. Kokaia’s presence should make their jobs easier, and if they too prove to be legitimate scoring threats, that in turn will make Kokaia even better. One of those hoping to provide assistance is Jovaughn Howard, a big goal scorer for Eastside High School in Gainesville. His 37 goals and nine assists over the last two years helped the Rams win back-to-back district titles. Brad Hunt did a lot of damage in his prep career too, not to mention at the club level where his team won a national title in 2008. While playing at Frisco High School in Texas, Hunt led the Dallas metro public schools with 32 goals as a senior and was first team allregion his last two seasons. IN THE MIDDLE Moccasin coach Hugh Seyfarth expected to have a dynamic midfield combo last year with Eoghan Conlon and Zach Hofstetter, but it never happened. Hofstetter never got the chance to take the field after suffering a season-ending injury in August, shortly after the start of training camp. Then Conlon went down

in late September, and played just 31 minutes the rest of the way. Conlon has graduated, but the Mocs still have Hofstetter, who earned a medical redshirt and will resume his career this year as a third-year sophomore. He played in 2007 as a defender, but after a position change the following spring, Hofstetter was ready to take over as a center midfielder before his injury. He’s ready again, and should give Florida Southern a weapon it didn’t have last season. Junior Sebastian Haupt is making the same type of move this year after starting much of the last two seasons at outside back. Haupt actually made the transition in the spring, and Seyfarth liked what he saw so much, the move has become permanent. Several other returning lettermen have already made contributions as midfielders, and will do so again in 2009. Of that group, sophomores David Fletcher and J.D. Ruiz saw the most playing time last year. Fletcher started the final nine games and gives the Moccasins another experienced playmaker in the middle, while Ruiz saw action in 14 games and the Mocs are looking for him to assume a bigger role this year on the outside. Junior Jared Bellingar will see plenty of time too, after playing in 19 games over the last two seasons, starting four of them. That trio of veterans is boosted by Nolan Cancino, a member of the Bahamas Under-20 national team, and Daniel Pulse. Cancino was on the roster last year but earned a potential redshirt season after not playing in the regular season. Pulse (the only senior on this year’s roster) looks to expand on his playing time from last year when he was still recovering from a previous injury. He was forced to sit out the ’07 season after transferring from Walla Walla CC in Washington, one of the nation’s best defensive teams his sophomore year. Sophomore Kirill Martynov joined the Moccasins last spring, and like Cancino, is hoping to use that extra experience to his advantage. Joining the midfielders this year are several freshmen, including Darren Gooden from Fort Myers, and Alex Ratkovic from New Port Richey. Gooden, who also plays forward, was a two-time all-area selection for Gateway Charter High School and led the Griffins
FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE with 28 points as a senior. Ratkovic was a four-year starter at River Ridge High School, and also won the FYSA state title while a member of the Clearwater Chargers club program. James May, Mikel Arrindell, and Meger Schamisseddine complete the rookie crop of midfielders and will battle for playing time alongside the veterans. May comes to the Moccasins from Royal Palm Beach High School and a club team with a strong showing in the last two state cups. Arrindell is a local product from Winter Haven who also came through the Lakeland club program. Schamisseddine honed his skills playing in Bolivia where his club won two state championships. IN THE BACK Depending on who was available, last year’s defensive line seemed to be built on a game-by-game basis. Eight different players started at one time or another, and six of them are back in 2009. Since Haupt is now a midfielder, sophomore Ashley Holmes is the only returning defender who has played more than a handful of games – and his total is only 11. The Moccasins will be counting on Holmes’ leadership almost as much as his skill. There were a lot of reasons the Mocs gave up more goals later in the season last year, but Holmes’ absence due to injury was one of them. Whether it’s coincidence or not, the team goals against average was nearly two goals higher with Holmes on the sideline, further illustrating how valuable he is in the middle of the Moccasin defense. The Mocs should have Sebastian Bergh available for the entire season too. He took the field just five times in 2008, but had a chance to play on a regular basis in the spring. Paired with Holmes, in reality for the first time, it will give the Moccasins a strong middle. If there was a positive that came out of all the injuries last year, it had to be the development of Matt Macias and Ryan Arndt. The play of Macias was a revelation after he was thrust into an unfamiliar role halfway through the season, dropping back from the midfield to play outside back. Though he too went down before the end of the season, Macias drew four starts at his new position and it was enough to show the coaching staff he could play there fulltime. Arndt didn’t see much time early in
2009 Men’s Soccer the year, but he got a chance to perform late in the season when he started four games. He then played extensively in the spring, giving him an opportunity to start again this fall. Three newcomers could make an impact for the defense too. One of those, sophomore Sebastian Abrahamsson, played last season at North Carolina Wesleyan and could also play in the midfield for Florida Southern. He helped the Battling Bishops go 16-3-2 last year, record 10 shutouts, and advance to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Freshman Billy Locy was a four-time All-Pinellas County selection for Osceola High School, while freshman Cody Togher starred for a defense at Barron Collier High School in Naples that last year allowed just 23 goals in 22 games.
BETWEEN THE POSTS Three of Florida Southern’s four goalkeepers were on the roster last year, and two of them played a lot. Fourthyear junior Paul DiPalma saw the most time, making nine starts and picking up the Moccasins’ lone shutout. He also had a big game against South Region champion Tampa later in the year. Junior Johan Jonsson made six starts and averaged just under six saves per game. He was in goal for the big win over Nova Southeastern but was among those felled by injury later in the year. Sophomore Charlie Craig served as the Mocs’ third goalkeeper in 2008, and will press the two juniors. He has two years of college experience after spending his rookie season as a redshirt at Milligan (TN). In turn, Craig will be challenged by freshman Carter Rhoad from Northview High School in Georgia.

2009 Men’s Soccer
Head Coach Hugh Seyfarth The 2009 season will be the fifth for Hugh Seyfarth as head coach of the Florida Southern College men’s soccer program. Over the last four years, he’s led the Moccasins to a 22-38-4 record. He’s only the fourth head coach in the program’s 53-year history, following Jim Bush (1957-80), Sam Snow (198192) and Kris Pahl (1993-2004). Seyfarth’s time at FSC began with the challenge of getting the Mocs up and running in a hurry. Hired in June of 2005, he had barely a month to prepare for his first collegiate head coaching job after making the move from Ohio. He officially debuted with a 4-0 win over Palm Beach Atlantic on August 27, and followed that by taking the Mocs on the road for a 2-1 upset of Montevallo, their first win over a nationally ranked opponent in five years. The Mocs finished that season with an 8-8 record, the most wins for any first-year Moccasin soccer coach. One year later, the Moccasins went 6-9-3, but jumped three spots in the Sunshine State Conference standings with a 3-3-2 league record and advanced to the SSC Tournament semi-finals. That record came against the most difficult schedule in the league too, as Florida Southern faced four top-20 teams, all four teams that played in the Division II South Region Tournament,
and one NAIA squad that reached the national semi-finals. The second half of the season saw Florida Southern defeat two regionally ranked teams and tie another. Three Moccasins ended up on the All-SSC Team, the most in six years. In 2007, Seyfarth’s third season at Florida Southern, the Moccasins again played the most challenging schedule in the SSC. Florida Southern’s opponents averaged nearly 11 wins and had a combined winning percentage of .600, with four of them nationally ranked at the end of the season and three others ranked during the season. Five of those teams reached the national top 10 at some point during the year. The Mocs also had two top-20 NAIA schools on the schedule, and for the second year in a row played all four teams that advanced to the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. Against that schedule, the Moccasins went 5-9-1, a season which saw them play nine of the final top ten teams in the South Region. The Mocs dropped two of those games in overtime and took regional qualifiers West Florida and Tampa late into the second half before falling 3-2 in both games. Last year, the schedule wasn’t the only challenge Seyfarth had to contend with, as he was forced to shuffle his lineup nearly every match. Along the way, the Moccasins again squared off against all four NCAA South Region qualifiers, and this time played every team that finished in the top ten of the final NSCAA South Region rankings. Even so, the Moccasins held their own until the very end when injuries left them with only 12 players available for a season-ending match at Lynn. Before coming to Florida Southern, Seyfarth had put together an 11-year coaching resumé that included seven seasons at the Division I level with Miami University in Ohio. While there, he served as an assistant with both the men’s and women’s teams during the 1998 and ‘99 seasons before joining the women's program full-time in 2000. He also served as the Associate Director of the Miami University Youth Soccer Tournament from 1998-2005, assisting in the planning, marketing and operations of the 224-team event.

While at Miami, Seyfarth made his first connection with Florida Southern by serving under Bobby Kramig, a former Moccasin goalkeeper from 1978-81, and a two-time MVP. A former college goalkeeper himself, Seyfarth worked primarily with the RedHawks’ defense, which lowered its goals against average by more than a goal per game in five years under his direction, and record 32 shutouts. That included a school-record 10 shutouts in 2002. In his seven seasons with the Miami women’s team, the RedHawks went 84-47-1, won three conference tournament titles and one regular season title in the Mid-America Conference. The RedHawks made three trips to the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round in both 2001 and 2002. Seyfarth’s first coaching job came at Earlham College in Indiana from 1996-98, where he spent two years as assistant coach for the Quaker men’s program. That included a term as interim head coach during the second half of the ‘96 season. From 1994-95, Seyfarth was an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach for the boy’s varsity team at Centerville High School, a nationally recognized program in central Ohio. While there, his starting keeper in 1995 was named the Ohio Player-ofthe-Year and a high school All-American. Seyfarth’s resumé also includes the title of staff coach for the Indiana ODP Under-14 girls’ state team in 1997, and assistant coach for the U-16 boy’s team in 1996. He has coached a number of club teams in Ohio and Indiana, and Seyfarth holds a USSF "A" coaching license. In college, Seyfarth was a four-year letterman and allconference goalkeeper at DePauw University in Greencastle,
Indiana, where he played for Page Cotton, who retired in 2008 with 390 career wins. Seyfarth was a Dean’s List student and team captain as a senior before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1994. He helped the Tigers to a fouryear overall record of 52-14-5, a mark of 24-0 in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference, and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Division III Tournament. During his senior year, the Tigers had one of their best seasons in school history with a 15-2-2 record. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from DePauw, Seyfarth earned a Master’s in Marketing from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration at Miami University in May of 2000. He also completed an intensive hands-on training program focused on the sales, marketing, promotion and communication process of sports and entertainment organizations that June, before becoming an instructor at the Farmer School of Business later that year. He held that position through the spring of 2005, and now serves as an instructor in the Florida Southern College physical education department in addition to his coaching duties. In June of 2007, Hugh was married to Stacey Russo and they live with their two dogs, Moose and Tiger, in Lakeland. Assistant Coach Jason Miller Jason Miller joined the Moccasin coaching staff in 2008, and is now in his second season on the sideline at Florida Southern. Miller, however, is well-known in the local soccer community as a member of the Lakeland Lazers club program and currently serves as head coach of the boys U-15 team. Miller is a Lakeland native who was a two-time All-State selection at Kathleen High School, and the 2001 Polk County Player-of-the-Year at Lake Gibson when he was also First Team All-State. He spent four years with the Florida ODP team, was a Region III ODP player for three years, and played club soccer for the Clearwater Chargers, with three state runner-up finishes. Miller went on to play collegiately at both West Virginia University and the University of South Florida. He graduated from West Virginia in 2005 with a degree in Business Management and returned to Lakeland as a coach with the Lazers. He has spent the last four years in that capacity.
Assistant Coach Derek Zimmerman After joining the Florida Southern coaching staff in 2008, Derek Zimmerman is back for a second year in 2009. He brings 11 years of coaching experience at the club level and is currently the head coach of the Lakeland FC 95-96 Boys Premier Team. Zimmerman was a 1994 All-State selection and region player-of-the-year at Lemon Bay High School before playing four years (1994-97) at Division I Radford University in Virginia. After graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1998, he returned to Florida and became active with Lakeland youth soccer. While coaching with Lakeland Highlands FC, he has guided teams to the Region C semifinals in 200405, a third place finish in the USA Division I League in 2005 and 2006, a first place finish in Champions Group F in 2006-07, and several other finals or semifinal appearances in tournament play.

Did You Know? Nine Moccasin goalkeepers have recorded an assist while playing in goal, most recently Matt Ward in a 3-1 victory over Saint Leo in 2006. Of that group, Marcus Larsson is the only one to pick up two assists in one game, doing so in a 4-1 win over Webber International on October 23, 1999.
Paul DiPalma has seen the majority of minutes in goal for Florida Southern over the last two seasons. He had the Mocs’ only shutout in 2008, blanking Alabama-Huntsville by a 1-0 score for the second year in a row.
No Moccasin has ever scored a goal while wearing a goalkeeper’s jersey, but Tim Moore did have one while playing forward in a game vs. Webber in 1986.

WHY MOCCASINS? Florida Southern first used the nickname Moccasins in 1926, shortly after the college’s move to Lakeland in 1922. The water moccasin, or cottonmouth, was abundant in the nearby lakes and since the moccasin is one of the fiercest of all snakes, the college adopted the moniker for its athletic teams. A male water moccasin can grow up to 1.8 meters (74 inches) in length, and though its venom is considered relatively mild compared to other poisonous snakes, its bite is still extremely painful.

Florida Southern’s first intercollegiate soccer team took the field in 1957, coached by Jim Bush (far left with the bow tie). In their inaugural season, the Moccasins went 1-3-2, playing in the Florida Intercollegiate Conference with Jacksonville, Rollins and Stetson. They tied Stetson, 1-1, in their first game, and earned their first win on November 2, at the expense of Jacksonville, beating the Dolphins, 3-1. Hernando Clavijo scored the first ever goal for the Moccasins, while Eddie Kalaska (kneeling and wearing #13) scored the first game-winner by snapping a 1-1 tie in the third quarter against Jacksonville. One year later, Florida Southern won the first of its five FIC titles. The Moccasins also won the league in 1965, 1966, 1967, and 1971.

BARNETT FIELD, HOME OF THE MOCCASINS The Moccasins play all of their home games at Barnett Field, on the campus of Florida Southern College. The field is located behind Jenkins Field House, home of the Moccasin volleyball and basketball teams, on the corner of Ingraham Avenue and McDonald Street. Bleacher seating is available on one side of the pitch for approximately 500 fans. Barnett Field is the only home the Moccasins have ever known since soccer was first played as an intercollegiate sport in 1957. Originally known as Pipkin Field, it was rechristened Barnett Field in 1990, in honor of longtime Florida Southern booster Hoyt Barnett. Lights were installed (nine polls at the cost of $100,000) in October of 1989, and the Moccasins played their first night game at Barnett Field in a 5-1, exhibition victory over Polk Community College in 1990. The first regular season night game was on September 8 of that year, a 2-0 loss to Flagler. The first intercollegiate soccer game at Pipkin/Barnett Field was on October 26, 1957, when the Mocs lost to Rollins College, 3-1. Their first win came one week later on November 2, when they downed the University of Jacksonville, 3-1. Since that first season, Florida Southern has compiled a 230167-30 record on its home pitch for a .574 winning percentage.
The Biggest Game at Barnett Field Florida Southern has hosted the #1 team in the country seven times, most recently Lynn University in 2007. However, the biggest game ever played at Barnett Field had to be on the afternoon of November 5, 1971. In a battle with Rollins College to decide the Florida Intercollegiate Conference, and an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament, the Moccasins prevailed 1�0, when Frank Hanraets scored with three seconds remaining in overtime, assisted by Richard Brelsford. It remains the only time the Mocs have advanced to NCAA postseason play. 17

FLORIDA SOUTHERN ALL-AMERICANS BILL CURRIE – 1961 Bill Currie, Florida Southern’s first soccer All-American, was also the school’s second AllAmerican in any sport, after basketball player Don Tobin had been honored four years earlier. Currie came to Florida Southern from Rochester, New York, and was a three-year letterman for the Moccasins from 1959-61. In each of those seasons he was All-Florida Intercollegiate Conference as the top goalkeeper in the league, and as a junior and senior, he was Florida Southern’s MVP. In 1960, Currie became the first Moccasin goalkeeper to post a shutout when he blanked Rollins and Emory in back-to-back games, and as a senior in 1961, he set a record that still stands today with 201 saves. Since that is the only season in which his save total is available, it’s likely Currie would be first or second on the Mocs’ career list as well.
JOHN HAYES – 1965 As a freshman from Sanford, Florida in 1961, John Hayes served as All-American Bill Currie’s backup in goal; and as a sophomore, he took over between the posts on a regular basis. After sitting out a season, Hayes returned to school in 1964, and spent two more years as Florida Southern’s starting goalkeeper. Among his highlights was a 22-save shutout against the University of Miami as a junior that was the Mocs’ first win over the powerful Hurricanes in seven tries. A year later, the Moccasins won the Florida Intercollegiate Conference with an undefeated league record, and Hayes was named to the all-conference team.
BRIAN BAIN – 1967 Just as John Hayes took over for Bill Currie and eventually won All-American honors, Brian Bain took over for Hayes and did the same. Bain, however, won the starting job as a freshman and remains the only four-year starting goalkeeper (1966-69) in team history. During his AllAmerican sophomore season, Bain set a school record that stood for 30 years with a 1.20 goals against average, and his career totals of nine shutouts with a 1.82 GAA stood as records for 28 years. He still ranks in the top three of every career goalkeeping category at Florida Southern, though complete save totals are unavailable from that era. Originally from Union, New Jersey, Bain was also a two-time All-State selection while that team was still in effect, and Florida Southern’s 1968 MVP.
JIM DAWSEY – 1969 The only Florida Southern field player to earn All-American honors was Jim Dawsey, who played for the Moccasins at the same time as All-American goalkeeper Brian Bain (1966-69). Dawsey was a Lakeland native who made an immediate impact by earning All-Florida Intercollegiate Conference status as a freshman. A four-year starter at forward and three-year captain, Dawsey graduated as the school’s career leader with 28 goals, a figure that still ranks th fifth in team history. He also ranks 10 on the career points list, and would certainly be higher if complete assist totals were available. He still remained in the top five until 1996. Dawsey led the Moccasins in goals as a junior, and in goals (11) and points (24) as a senior when he was Florida Southern’s Most Valuable Player.
AHMAD BELFON – Academic All-American (1997, ’98, ’99) Florida Southern soccer’s only Academic All-American, Ahmad Belfon (also known as Junior) was a four-year starting defender for the Moccasins from 1996-99. During that time, Florida Southern had four of the top six defensive seasons in team history, with a total of 24 shutouts and a 1.09 goals against average. Twice during that period, the Mocs had a team goals against average under 1.00, and in 1997 they set school records with 11 shutouts and a 0.62 GAA. In Belfon’s senior year, the Moccasins set another team record by allowing just 8.8 shots per match while going 13-5-2, and allowing more than one goal in only three of their 20 games played. Belfon also scored five goals with five assists in his career, and his 65 career starts are the fourth most by a Moccasin.

QUICK FEATS Fastest Goal at the Start of a Match 10/25/77 Seven players have scored goals in the first minute of a match, led by Nick Koumantzelis who scored just 15 seconds into play vs. Eckerd in 1977. The Mocs eventually lost though, 4-3. Paul Finney is the only other Moccasin to score in the first 30 seconds, notching his goal just 25 seconds into a match against Jacksonville in 1964. The Mocs also lost that game. Pete Schiebel was the last Moccasin with a goal in the first minute, needing only 46 seconds to score against Saint Leo on October 29, 2002. The Moccasins again lost the game.
Shortest Time Between Goals 10/9/86 Teammates Keith Spresser and Frank Stork scored just six seconds apart early in the first half of a 7-0 win over Warner Southern. That’s one second shy of the NCAA record held by Ian Martin and Josh Dukes of Florida International against St. Thomas. Time Between Goals by the Same Player 9/12/87 Okay, so everyone scored in a 16-0 win vs. Florida Bible College in 1987, but Steve Lose scored back-to-back goals just eight seconds apart. He shares the NCAA all-divisions record with George Moyssidis of Florida International.

Moccasin Hat Tricks
Since the men’s soccer program was started in 1957, the Moccasins have had a total of 65 hat tricks (three or more goals in one game), most recently by current Moccasin Givi Kokaia last year at Florida Tech. Among the 65 hat tricks are a school-record 10 by Alan Grossman from 1971-74. The Mocs’ all-time scoring leader had four as a sophomore, set another school record with five as a junior and added one more as a senior. In four of his hat tricks, Grossman scored at least four goals, including three times as a junior. Several others have had multiple hat tricks in their careers, including Terry Darby (four from 1963-65); Jim Dawsey (four from 1966-69); Frank Bresk (four from 1990-93); and Chris Crawshaw (three from 1994-97).

Most recently it was Paul Sluyter (4) and Peter Andersen (3) in a 13-1 win vs. Southeastern on Sept. 8, 1998. • Four freshmen have had a hat trick for the Moccasins in their debut, including Andy MacKintosh against Flagler in 1973. Since the program began in 1957, Florida Southern has played six scoreless ties in its history. The last occurred on September 3, 2006, when the Moccasins hosted Alabama-Huntsville. Most of the game was played in a downpour, with standing water in several spots on the pitch. The Mocs finally broke through in the first overtime, only to have the goal disallowed off by an offside call.

Jim Bush, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2005 Jim Bush spent 30 years at Florida Southern and served as head coach of the Moccasins from their beginning in 1957, until his retirement following the 1980 season. He compiled a career record of 115‐118‐23, won five Florida Intercollegiate Conference titles, and led the Mocs to their only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1971. Bush also coached the Florida Southern men’s tennis team for 27 years (1959‐85) and put together a mark of 283‐209, and the FSC women’s tennis team in 1979 and ‘80 with a record of 33‐16. Alan Grossman, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2006 In 2006, Jim Bush was joined by one of his former players, Alan Grossman, who played at FSC from 1971‐74. He set season records that still stand with 22 goals and 47 points in 1973, and also owns the school record for goals in a match (6), goals in a career (47), and most career hat tricks (10). His career total of 97 points stood as a school record for 31 years before it was broken in 2005. He was the Mocs’ leading scorer three times, including his senior year when he moved to the back line in order to help the defense.

The Founding Father of Florida Southern Soccer, 2007 Hall of Fame Inductee Mohammed Sabie
Mohammed Sabie
Though he never served as head coach of the men’s soccer team, Mohammed Sabie would have to be considered the patriarch of the Florida Southern soccer program. As a student at Florida Southern in 1954, Sabie was instrumental in organizing a men’s club soccer program, which later reached varsity status in 1957. He also played for the early Moccasins and after his graduation in 1957, took his soccer expertise to Kentucky where he is credited with being one of the founding fathers of soccer in that state. He coached and taught at Morehead State University for 38 years and is a member of that school’s Hall of Fame as well. Sabie was also a coach for the Iraqi national team in the 1968 Olympics. In March of 2007, Mohammed Sabie became the third person inducted into the Florida Southern Athletic Hall of Fame for his contributions to soccer. He joined Jim Bush, the Moccasin coach from 1957-80, and Alan Grossman, who played for the Mocs from 197174, and still holds the school’s career goals record. Shortly after his induction into the FSC Athletic Hall of Fame, Sabie passed away in Kentucky at the age of 77. 29

On October 10, 2000, Trevor Clark’s overtime goal at Barry gave the Moccasins a 3-2 victory and their last win against a team ranked #1 in the country. RECORD NIGHT AT ROLLINS Only once has a Florida Southern soccer match been decided by penalty kicks, and it came in the first round of the 2003 SSC Tournament. The Moccasins and Tars finished overtime tied 1‐1, but the Mocs eventually prevailed after 16 rounds of penalty kicks. Even more amazing, both teams made their first 15 attempts before FSC goalkeeper Clint Harris stopped Rollins on #16, and Asa Pepia converted for the Mocs. It’s believed to be the longest game in NCAA Division II history, and matched a 16‐round tie‐breaker by Clarkson (NY) and Plattsburgh State (NY) in the ’93 Division III regionals.

THE SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single sport organization to the Division II “Conference of Champions”. Since its inception, the conference has grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. Sunshine State Conference member schools have won recent NCAA national titles (69 total) in Commissioner baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and Jay Jones women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball. The SSC is also nationally recognized in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s rowing and women’s basketball. The SSC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, softball and women’s rowing. The first national title won by an SSC member school was in 1978, by the Florida Southern baseball team. Most recently, the Lynn baseball team and Nova Southeastern women’s golf team won national championships in 2009. For more information, please contact:
