Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun”

The Danforth Chapel is one of two chapels on campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Thad Buckner Building is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.

The Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center houses a fullsized basketball court, weight and aerobic rooms, and a student lounge and is adjacent to an NCAA regulation size swimming pool.

Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.

Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.

Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

Dr. Anne B. Kerr College President Since her unanimous appointment as its 17th president in 2004, Dr. Kerr has provided Florida Southern College with extraordinary vision and leadership that is enhancing the student experience and increasing the College’s national prominence. Under her guidance, the institution has renewed its commitment to educating the whole person -- academically, socially, spiritually, and physically -- so that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr led a comprehensive Strategic Plan designed to enrich all facets of the College’s student-centered culture. She is dedicated to enhancing a student life culture that provides opportunities for active learning and leadership; promoting a scholarly environment where professors have outstanding records of achievement that support innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction; and to strengthening further the College’s outstanding scholar-athlete program that models the highest standards of NCAA Division II athletics.

Pete Meyer Director of Athletics In 2008-09, Pete Meyer served his first year as the Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College. Named to the position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. Since 1972, he is just the fourth person to occupy the position of athletics director at Florida Southern - following Hal Smeltzly (1972-2000), Mike Roberts (2000-01) and Webb (200108). Meyer was the Moccasins’ head baseball coach from 2002 through 2008. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, as the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center as well as the the water ski program and campus intramurals also fall under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, had served as assistant athletics director for Webb since February of 2006, in addition to maintaining his baseball coaching duties. In his position as assistant athletics director, he was responsible for acquiring major gifts for the athletic department that included funding and equipment for the athletics weight room and upgrading the baseball and men’s basketball locker rooms. He coordinated all of the athletic department’s fundraising efforts, coordinated athletic facilities and served as game administrator for various

2009 Volleyball As part of her quest for excellence, Dr. Kerr commissioned a master plan that outlines the College’s vision for the campus and includes numerous facility transformations. These include the newly completed Barnett Residential Life Center and the soon-to-be completed state-of-the-art Christoverson Humanities Building, both designed by world-renowned architect Robert A. M. Stern; TuTu’s Cyber Café in the Roux Library and the adjacent McKay Archives Center; the expansion of wireless Internet access, campus-wide technology upgrades, and the Rinker Technology Center, currently under construction; renovations to the student dining facility and residence halls; as well as a restoration of our world renowned Frank Lloyd Wright designed campus. Prior to assuming the presidency at Florida Southern, Dr. Kerr was Vice President for Advancement at both Rollins College and the University of Richmond. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Florida State University. She has held a number of community volunteer leadership roles and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Central Florida and All Saints’ Academy. An avid supporter of the arts, she is the current president of the Board of Trustees of the Polk Museum of Art. She is in the first year of her term as president of the Sunshine State Conference. She and her husband Dr. Roy Kerr have a fifteen-year-old son Ed. Roy Kerr has authored two books about baseball entitled “The Loving of the Game” (2007) and “Sliding Billy Hamilton: The Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Hitter” (2009).

home events. He also served as Florida Southern’s representative on the Sunshine State Conference Marketing Committee. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, keeping the Moccasin program among the elite in NCAA Division II. In 2005, he guided the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title with a 51-11 record and was the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II Coach-of-the-Year. In addition to his national coaching honors from the ABCA, Meyer also was South Region, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Diamond Club (scouting organization) Coach-of-the-Year. His head coaching record at Florida Southern was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirtyfour Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at FSC. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under the legendary head coach, Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III baseball program in 1991. He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 21-year old Ross, 19-year old Mitchell and 18-year old Megan.

Jill StEphens HEAD Coach Considered one of the top volleyball coaches in the country, Jill Stephens is in her ninth season as the Moccasins’ head coach. Last season she coached the Moccasins to a 25-9 record that included a runner-up finish in the Sunshine State Conference and a seventh straight NCAA tournament bid. The Moccasins were ranked 19th in the final AVCA Division II Poll, marking the fifth straight year they have finished the season ranked in the top 20. Stephens’ eight-year record at FSC is 197-84. Her .701 winning percentage ranks 21st overall among active NCAA Division II coaches going into the 2009 season. She is one of just four current Division II coaches with at least 197 wins in less than 10 seasons as a head coach. In 2007 she guided her team to a 26-9 record and a runner-up finish at the NCAA South Regional. The Moccasins finished tied for second in the Sunshine State Conference with a mark of 11-5 and handed SSC champion Tampa its only conference loss. She coached the Moccasins to a 31-5 record and a share of the SSC title in 2006. In 2005 she earned the SSC Coach of the Year award, as she led the Moccasins to a 33-4 record and a 14-2 SSC mark. She also recorded her 100th career coaching win with a 30-26, 30-20, 30-23 win at Saint Leo on Oct. 5, 2005. Seven of her players have earned All-America recognition and nine have received Academic All-District honors. In each of the last two seasons (2007, 2008) the Moccasins have earned an AVCA Team Academic Award.

In her eight previous seasons as head coach, she’s had a total of 27 seniors in the program. All of them have graduated and seven of them are coaching volleyball at either the high school, college or club level. Her appointment in 2001 as FSC’s head volleyball coach came after she had served two years as an assistant coach at Division I Florida Atlantic University (1995-96) and four years (1997-2000) as an assistant to longtime FSC head coach Lois Webb. A 1995 graduate of FSC, Stephens earned her bachelor’s degree in sports management and earned her master’s degree (also in sports management) from the U.S. Sports Academy in 2001. Her standout playing career earned her a spot in the Florida Southern Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. She played for the Moccasins from 1991 to 1994, twice earning AVCA All-America recognition, in 1994 as a first-team honoree and in 1993 as a member of the second team. As a senior, Stephens was named the Florida Southern Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. As a freshman, she helped guide her team to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Division II Championship. In 1992, her sophomore season, Stephens was named the Mocs’ most valuable player and led her team to an NCAA South Regional appearance. She ranks in the top five in the FSC record book in four career categories: (kills-3rd, 1691; digs-5th, 1475; attack attempts-2nd, 3731; aces-3rd, 217). Her totals of 155 matches played and 547 games played are the most in FSC history. In 2007 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of her high school, Cardinal Gibbons High School in Ft. Lauderdale, where she played for the legendary AVCA Hall of Fame member Louise Crocco.. She served on the NCAA South Region Advisory Committee for Volleyball for three seasons. In addition, she represents the Sunshine State Conference on the NCAA Division II Volleyball Head Coaches Committee and is chair of the AVCA All-South Region Selection Committee, as well as a member of the AVCA All-America Selection Committee. Stephens is passionate about youth volleyball, as she served the summer of 2007 and 2008 as a head coach for Florida’s USAV High Performance program. She also loves her time as sponsor of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at Florida Southern.

JOSH HILL - Assistant Coach

Josh Hill is in his second season (2009) as Jill Stephens’ top assistant. Before coming to FSC, he was an assistant volleyball coach at Campbell University for two seasons. “I’m super excited to have Josh on our staff,” Stephens said. “He has great experience and fits in with our philosophy of excellence and family. He also wants to win a national championship, which is one of our goals every season.” In addition to his duties with the Moccasins, he also serves as director of the Lakeland Area Volleyball Association and is the representative for the National Division II Assistant Coaches Organization. Prior to his two seasons at Campbell, Hill served as a volunteer assistant at Florida for the 2005 season. The Gators reached the NCAA regional finals that season. During his tenure at Florida, he also worked at the nationally acclaimed Florida Volleyball Camp and served as director of the Faith Sports Camps. Hill was a four-year letterman in men’s volleyball at Northland Baptist Bible College (Wis.), now Northland International University, earning first-team all-conference honors three times. He was the conference tournament MVP in 2000 and was an all-tournament selection at the 2000 NCCAA Tournament. He received his bachelor’s degree in counseling from Northland Baptist and earned his master’s degree in counseling from Bob Jones University in South Carolina. He and his wife, Annie, have two sons, Noah (4) and Jacob (2).

CHRISSY CENTRELLA - Part-TIME Assistant Coach

Chrissy Centrella returns for her second season as a part-time assistant. She has a master’s degree in management from Warner University, where she also received her bachelor’s degree. She is a graduate of Crystal River High School. She has been the head volleyball coach at Southeastern University and Warner and has served as an FSC Volleyball Camp coach.

BRIAN IMPERIALE - Graduate Assistant Coach

Brian Imperiale joins the Moccasin staff for the 2009 season as a graduate assistant. He has been the head coach of the Pinellas Heat Elite club program since 2004, as well as the head coach at Clearwater Central Catholic High School the past two seasons. His Pinellas Heat team has qualified for the Junior Olympics three straight years. His Clearwater Central teams went 33-17 in his two seasons there. He received his bachelor’s degree in finance in 2002 from Florida State and played on the men’s club volleyball team there. A native of Dunedin, he and his wife, Mehryn, live in Clearwater and have a 10-month-old son, Drew.

ASHLEY MARTIN - Student Assistant Coach

Her playing career cut short by an injury, Ashley Martin will serve as a student coach for the 2009 season. Martin played two seasons (2006 & 2007) for the Moccasins before a shoulder injury sidelined her for the 2008 season. In her two seasons with the Moccasins, she was a second-team All-America selection both seasons. She led the team in kills (439) and hit .289 in 2007, earning second-team All-Sunshine State Conference recognition. She was second on the team in kills (395) and hitting percentage (.292) in 2006 and was a first-team All-SSC pick. Before coming to Florida Southern, she played one season at Winthrop University. She’s a graduate of Seminole High School and with one season of eligibility remaining, she is hopeful of playing in 2010.

WHY MOCCASINS? ...

Florida Southern first used the nickname Moccasins in 1926, shortly after the college’s move to Lakeland in 1922. The water moccasin, or cottonmouth snake, was abundant in the nearby lakes and since the moccasin is one of the fiercest of all snakes, one that will attack unprovoked, the college adopted the moniker for its athletic teams. 12

2009 Volleyball

Record Crowd Watches Mocs Topple Tampa Thanks to a school-record crowd of 1,012 on Sept. 29, 2006, Florida Southern ranked 36th in the NCAA Division II in volleyball home attendance for the 2006 season. The school-record crowd saw the Moccasins sweep then #1-ranked Tampa in straight sets, handing the Spartans what would be their only loss of the season.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM ENJOYS ACADEMIC SUCCESS The success of the FSC volleyball team extends to the classroom as well as the volleyball court. In each of the past two seasons, the Moccasins have received an American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. To be eligible for consideration, a team had to produce a team grade point average of 3.30 or higher for the school year. FSCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volleyball team GPA was 3.43 for the 2008-09 year. Twelve players had a GPA of 3.00 or better for the year. Four volleyball players were among the 46 FSC studentathletes who received the 2008-09 Division II Academic Achievement Awards presented by WeatherPORT. Sponsored by the Division II Athletics Directors Association, the program recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athlete. To be eligible for consideration, a studentathlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher, must have been in attendance for at least four semesters and must have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during the last academic year. The five volleyball recipients were â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Julia Borecka, Elise Burke, Danielle Higginbotham, Courtney Johnson.

JENKINS FIELD HOUSE

The Moccasins play their home matches in Jenkins Field House on the Florida Southern campus. Designed to complement FSC’s Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings, the facility can encompass three full volleyball/basketball courts. First opened in December 1966 for men’s basketball, Jenkins Field House is one of the largest buildings on campus, covering 40,000 square feet. It was built utilizing the steel framework of three B-47 bomber hangars from Tampa’s MacDill Air Force Base. The first volleyball match in the building occurred on Sept. 29, 1976, when FSC defeated Seminole Junior College 15-5, 15-3. Seven times the facility has been the site for NCAA regional volleyball tournaments and it was the site for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship in 1983. An FSC volleyball record crowd of 1,012 watched the Mocs sweep Tampa on Sept. 29, 2006. In the Moccasins’ 33-year volleyball history, their record in Jenkins Field House is 399-96 (.806). Four times they have enjoyed undefeated home seasons (1981, 1989, 1990, 1993). During a period from October 20, 1988, through October 12, 1991, the Mocs compiled a streak of 41 consecutive home wins. Florida Southern’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name the field house for George Jenkins, president of Publix Super Markets, Inc., in appreciation of his generous support of the school, both as a benefactor and a friend.

In addition to being a two-time All-American herself, Moccasin head coach Jill Stephens has produced seven All-Americans during her coaching tenure. The Moccasins have had at least one All-American in eight of Stephensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; nine seasons at Florida Southern. Beverly Stasis, the career leaders in kills for FSC and the Sunshine State Conference, has the distinction of being the only Moccasin volleyball player to receive AVCA recognition in each of her four seasons. She was the AVCA Freshman of the Year in 2004, received honorable mention All-American recognition in 2005 and 2006 and was a second-team honoree in 2007.

In 1983, Jill Petrie became the first volleyball student-athlete to garner this prestigious award, while Heather Carricoffe was recognized with the honor in 1999.

SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single sport organization to the Division II “Conference of Champions.” Since its inception, the conference has grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. Sunshine State Conference member schools have won NCAA national titles (71 total) in baseball, men’s basketball, Jay Jones men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s Commissioner and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball, and are nationally recognized in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s rowing and women’s basketball. The SSC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, softball and women’s rowing. The first women’s SSC championships began in 1981-82. SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE HALL OF FAME Lisa Ball (women’s golf) and Wayne Raath (men’s golf) were inducted into the SSC Hall of Fame in 2009 bringing the number of inductees from Florida Southern College to 41. Nine Moccasin representatives were inducted into the inaugural class in 1991-92 and FSC has had at least one inductee in 15 of the 18 classes since the Hall’s inception. Of the 41inductees, 27 have been student-athletes, while 10 have come from the coaching ranks and four from administrative and staff positions.

FSC MEN FIRST, WOMEN SECOND IN 2008-09 SSC Mayor’s Cup

Florida Southern finished tied for first in the men’s division and second in the women’s division for the Sunshine State Conference Mayor’s Cup for all-sports competition for the 2008-09 academic year. The award is sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC schools are located. The Mayor’s Cup recognizes competition in six sports for men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis and eight sports for women: basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Points in each sport are awarded by the number of schools sponsoring teams in the respective sports. The 2008-09 academic year marked the 23rd year of the Mayor’s Cup competition. FSC has won the men’s division 11 times and also won the women’s division 10 times. DIRECTIONS TO FSC From Orlando Take I-4 West to exit 33. Turn left off exit and turn right at second stoplight. Continue to major intersection at Memorial Blvd and turn left. Go 1/2 mile to Ingraham Avenue and turn right. Go to McDonald and turn right. Parking lot is on the left, just past Barnett Field. From Orlando Airport Take 417 South (toll road) to I-4 West and follow directions above. From Tampa/St. Petersburg/Fort Myers Follow I-4 East to Exit 27 (570E, Polk Parkway exit). Go approximately 6.1 miles to Exit 7 (South Florida Avenue - toll: 50 cents). Turn left onto 37N (South Florida Avenue) and go to McDonald Street. Turn right on McDonald and turn go seven blocks to the campus. Park in the second parking lot on the right (Barnett Field). From Palm Beach/Fort Lauderdale Take Florida Turnpike north to Yeehaw Junction (Hwy 60). Take Hwy 60 to 98 North to Lakeland. Watch for Grove Park Shopping Plaza and turn left at Crystal Lake and go to Lake Hollingsworth Drive. Turn right and go to Ingraham and turn right. Go to stop sign (McDonald) and turn left. Parking lot will be on the left, just past Barnett Field.
