Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun”

The Danforth Chapel is one of two chapels on campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Thad Buckner Building is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.

The Esplanades, totaling 1.5 miles, line the west campus of Florida Southern College. The “covered walkways” connect the structures, actually weaving in and out, providing the pattern for the complex.

Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.

Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.

2

Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

DR. ANNE B. KERR College President Since her appointment

as Florida Southern College’s seventeenth president in 2004, D r. A n ne K e r r ’s v i s ion a r y leadership has enhanced the student experience on campus and increased the college’s national prominence. Under her direction, the institution has renewed its commitment to educate the whole person—academically, socially, spiritually and physically—in order to insure that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr oversaw implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for the College that was designed to enrich all facets of our student-centered culture. Opportunities for active learning and leadership were increased; innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction were prioritized; and the College’s scholar-athlete program became a national model for NCAA Division II athletic programs. Recent college improvements include ongoing restoration projects on the Frank Lloyd Wright campus and the construction of a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian House for use as a Tourism and Education Center, which will be the first Wright design built

2011 Volleyball since 1966. Other new construction includes the two-building Barnett Residential Complex and the Christoverson Humanities Building (all three designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern), the McKay Archives Center, the Blanton Nursing Building, the Rinker Technology Center, and TûTû’s Café (located in the Roux Library). Further improvements include the complete renovation of the student dining facility (Wynee’s Bistro), residence hall and campus-wide technology upgrades, and a campus beautification project featuring dozens of interconnected plazas and gardens. Dr. Kerr graduated from Mercer University and received her M.S. and Ph.D. from Florida State University. Prior to assuming the Presidency at Florida Southern, she served as Vice President for Advancement both at the University of Richmond and at Rollins College. She has held numerous volunteer leadership roles, and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank, All Saints’ Academy, EarthLinked Technologies, Inc., the Polk Museum of Art, and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. She recently completed a two-year term as president of the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. Dr. Kerr and her husband, Roy, have a seventeen-year-old son, Ed, who plays baseball for All Saints’ Academy. Dr. Roy Kerr is a retired professor of Spanish and a baseball historian, whose recent publications include The Loving of the Game: a Baseball Memoir (2007); Sliding Billy Hamilton: the Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Man (2010), and Roger Connor: Home Run King of Nineteenth-Century Baseball (2011).

The Christoverson Humanities Building, which opened Fall 2011, is the latest of the numerous additions to the campus under the leadership of President Kerr. A Tourism & Education Center, based on a Frank Lloyd Wright design, is currently under construction.

PETE MEYER Director of Athletics

Now in his fourth year (201112) as Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College, Pete Meyer saw Moccasin teams enjoy another successful year in 2010-11. The women’s golf team finished third at the NCA A Division II Championship. The swimming team claimed four individual event NCA A championships (Mary O’Sullivan – 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, Jeb Halfacre – 200-yard backstroke and men’s 400-yard medley relay team). Twelve of FSC’s programs participated in NCAA postseason competition. FSC won Sunshine State Conference titles in men’s cross country (14th straight) and women’s basketball (regular season and postseason tournament), won the SSC women’s Mayor’s Cup Award and tied for second in the men’s Mayors’ Cup. That success combined to give the Moccasins a 19th-place finish, tops among SSC schools, in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports/ NACDA Cup standings and their 10th top 25 finish in the program’s history. Meyer also returned to the coaching ranks in 2010-11, taking command of the baseball program 12 games into the season and guiding the Moccasins to a final season record of 32-15. In 2009-10, FSC won its 12th NCAA men’s golf title and 27th national title overall and produced its first national champion in swimming (Jeb Halfacre – 200-yard backstroke). Eleven programs were represented in NCAA postseason competition, with men’s golf, basketball and cross country teams capturing SSC titles. In Meyer’s first year as AD (2008-09), Moccasin teams produced three SSC championships (men’s cross country, men’s basketball, softball) and a fifth-place national finish in women’s

As head coach of the Moccasin baseball team, Coach Pete Meyer led FSC to the 2005 NCAA National Championship. It was the ninth national title won by FSC baseball program.

golf. Eleven FSC teams went to NCAA postseason competition. Named to the AD position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, putting the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center, as well as the water ski program and campus intramurals under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, also served as assistant athletics director for Webb from February of 2006 until his AD appointment. In his previous stint as baseball coach (2002-08), Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, guiding the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title in 2005 with a 51-11 record. His head coaching record at Florida Southern is 282-121-1, while his overall record as a head coach is 321-151-1. Thirty-eight Moccasin baseball players have been drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure as head coach. Before officially assuming the reigns of head baseball coach in June of 2002, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under legendary head coach Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III program in 1991. His Oglethorpe teams won Eastern Division titles in the SCAC in each of his two seasons (1992-93). He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children - 23-year old Ross, 21-year-old Mitchell, who is enrolled at FSC, and 20-year old Megan, who attends Trinity University in Texas.

Averaging over 20 wins per season in her first decade, Jill Stephens is in her 11th season (2011) as the Moccasins’ head coach. Last season the Moccasins were 21-9, tied for second (11-5) in the Sunshine State Conference and received an NCAA Tournament bid. Stephens’ 10-year record at FSC is 232-111. She recorded her 200th career coaching win on Aug. 29, 2009, with a three-set win over Millersville in the St. Mary’s (Texas) Invitational. In 2008 she coached the Moccasins to a 25-9 record that included a runner-up finish in the SSC and a seventh straight NCAA tournament bid. The Moccasins were ranked 19th in the final AVCA Division II Poll, marking the fifth straight year they finished the season ranked in the top 20. In 2007 she guided her team to a 26-9 record and a runner-up finish at the NCAA South Regional. The Moccasins tied for second in the SSC at 11-5 and handed SSC champion Tampa its only conference loss.

She coached the Moccasins to a 31-5 record and a share of the SSC title in 2006. In 2005 she was SSC Coach of the Year, leading the Moccasins to a 33-4 record and a 14-2 SSC mark. She recorded her 100th career coaching win with a 30-26, 30-20, 30-23 win at Saint Leo on Oct. 5, 2005. Nine of her players have earned All-America recognition and 12 have received Academic All-District honors. In each of the last four seasons (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) FSC has earned an AVCA Team Academic Award. Julia Borecka, an honorable mention All-America selection in 2009, is in her second season playing professionally in Sweden for EVS-Eangelholm Volleyball. In her 10 previous seasons as head coach, Stephens has had a total of 35 seniors in the program and 97% have graduated. Sixteen have gone on to earn an advanced academic degree or are working on one. The fields of study include oral surgery, exercise science, theology, counseling, business administration, physical therapy, education, engineering, sport psychology and law. One has earned a doctorate and two more are working on theirs. Nine of them are coaching volleyball at either the high school, college or club level. Her appointment in 2001 as FSC’s head volleyball coach came after she had served two years as an assistant coach at Division I Florida Atlantic University (1995-96) and four years (1997-2000) as an assistant to longtime FSC head coach Lois Webb. A 1995 FSC graduate, Stephens earned her bachelor’s degree in sports management and earned her master’s degree (also in sports management) from the U.S. Sports Academy in 2001. Her standout playing career earned her induction into the FSC Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. She played from 1991-94, twice earning AVCA All-America recognition, in 1994 as a first-team honoree and in 1993 as a second-team selection. As a senior, Stephens was named the FSC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. As a freshman, she helped guide her team to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Division II Championship. In 1992, her sophomore season, Stephens was FSC’s most valuable player and led her team to an NCAA South Regional appearance. She still ranks in the top four in the FSC record book in four career categories: (kills-3rd, 1691; digs-5th, 1475; attack attempts-2nd, 3731; aces-3rd, 217). Her totals of 155 matches played and 547 sets played are the most in FSC history. In 2007 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Ft. Lauderdale, where she played for the legendary Louise Crocco. The only coaches for whom Stephens played, Crocco and Webb, are in the AVCA Hall of Fame. Currently she serves on the NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Committee and is chair of the South Region Advisory Committee. She also has represented the SSC on the Division II Volleyball Head Coaches Committee and has served as chair of the AVCA All-South Region Selection Committee, as well as a member of the AVCA AllAmerica Selection Committee. Stephens is passionate about youth volleyball, as she served the summer of 2007, 2008 and 2010 as a head coach for Florida’s USAV High Performance program. She also coached the AAU 10 and under team for Southern Select last spring. As sponsor of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at Florida Southern, she enjoys the impact she makes with FSC’s student-athletes.

Brian Imperiale, who joined the Moccasin staff for the 2009 season as a graduate assistant, is in his second season as Jill Stephens’ top assistant. In 2010, he started Southern Select Volleyball, a club volleyball program in Lakeland, where he serves as director. Before coming to Florida Southern, Imperiale coached for the Pinellas Heat Elite club program for seven years. In June of 2010, his Pinellas Heat 16’s team finished second in the Open Division at the AAU Junior National Championship in Orlando. His Pinellas Heat teams qualified for the Junior Olympics four times during his tenure there. In 2010, he was named Florida Region Male Coach of the Year. In addition to his club coaching experience, Imperiale served as the head coach at Clearwater Central Catholic High School for two seasons and has coached with the Team Florida High Performance program. In 2010, he was an assistant coach for the Team Florida Youth squad that won a gold medal at the USA High Performance Championships in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. He received his bachelor’s degree in finance in 2002 from Florida State and played on the men’s club volleyball team there. A native of Dunedin, he and his wife, Mehryn, live in Clearwater with their two sons, Drew (2), and Sean (3 months).

WHY MOCCASINS? ...

Florida Southern College first used the nickname Moccasins in 1926, shortly after the college’s move to Lakeland in 1922. The water moccasin, or cottonmouth snake, was abundant in the nearby lakes and since the moccasin is one of the fiercest of all snakes, one that will attack unprovoked, the college adopted the moniker for its athletic teams.

FSC VOLLEYBALL COACHES AMONG THE NATION’S BEST

Florida Southern has had just three volleyball coaches in the program’s history. Kathy Benn was the coach in the inaugural season of 1976. Lois Webb took over the program in 1977 and in a 24-year coaching career produced 747 victories and a .733 winning percentage (747-272). That win total ranks 20th all-time covering all three NCAA divisions. Former FSC All-American Jill Stephens, who played for Webb (1991-94) and who also was an assistant coach under her (1997-2000), succeeded Webb as head coach in 2001. Stephens has recorded 232 wins in her first 10 seasons as head coach (232-111). Among active Division II volleyball coaches, Stephens entered the 2011 season ranked 29th in winning percentage (.676) and 48th in career wins. On the Division II all-time coaches’ list, Webb ranks fourth in wins and 14th in winning percentage. Webb was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2003.

Record Crowd Watches Mocs Topple Tampa Thanks to a school-record crowd of 1,012 on Sept. 29, 2006, Florida Southern ranked 36th in the NCAA Division II in volleyball home attendance for the 2006 season. The schoolrecord crowd saw the Moccasins sweep then #1-ranked Tampa in straight sets, handing the Spartans what would be their only loss of the season.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM ENJOYS ACADEMIC SUCCESS The success of the FSC volleyball team extends to the classroom as well as the volleyball court. In each of the past four seasons, the Moccasins have received an American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. To be eligible for consideration, a team had to produce a team grade point average of 3.30 or higher for the school year. FSC’s volleyball team GPA was 3.31 for the 2010-11 year. Nine players had a GPA of 3.00 or better for the year. Three volleyball players were among the 49 FSC student-athletes who received 2010-11 Division II Academic Achievement Awards. Sponsored by the Division II Athletics Directors Association, the program recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher, must have been in attendance for at least four semesters and must have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during the last academic year. The three volleyball recipients were Lauren Huber, Morgan Kosterlitz and Kendall Wilde.

The Moccasins play their home matches in Jenkins Field House on the Florida Southern campus. Designed to complement FSC’s Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings, the facility can encompass three full volleyball/ basketball courts. First opened in December 1965 for men’s basketball, Jenkins Field House is one of the largest buildings on campus, covering 40,000 square feet. It was built utilizing the steel framework of three B-47 bomber hangars from Tampa’s MacDill Air Force Base. The first volleyball match in the building occurred on Sept. 29, 1976, when FSC defeated Seminole Junior College 15-5, 15-3. Seven times the facility has been the site for NCAA regional volleyball tournaments and it was the site for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship in 1983. An FSC volleyball record crowd of 1,012 watched the Mocs sweep Tampa on Sept. 29, 2006. In the Mocs’ 35-year volleyball history, their record in Jenkins Field House is 418104 (.800). Four times they have enjoyed undefeated home seasons (1981, 1989, 1990, 1993). During a period from October 20, 1988, through October 12, 1991, the Mocs compiled a streak of 41 consecutive home wins. Florida Southern’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name the field house for George Jenkins, president of Publix Super Markets, Inc., in appreciation of his generous support of the school, both as a benefactor and a friend. A renovation project during the summer of 2011 resulted in a new bleachers, new sound system, and a new coat of paint.

In addition to being a two-time All-American herself, Moccasin head coach Jill Stephens has produced nine All-Americans during her coaching tenure. The Moccasins have had at least one All-American in ten of Stephens’ 11 seasons at Florida Southern. Beverly Stasis, the career leaders in kills for FSC and the Sunshine State Conference, has the distinction of being the only Moccasin volleyball player to receive AVCA recognition in each of her four seasons. She was the AVCA Freshman of the Year in 2004, received honorable mention All-American recognition in 2005 and 2006 and was a second-team honoree in 2007. 25
