Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun”
The Danforth Chapel is one of two chapels on campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The Thad Buckner Building is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.
The Esplanades, totaling 1.5 miles, line the west campus of Florida Southern College. The “covered walkways” connect the structures, actually weaving in and out, providing the pattern for the complex.
Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.
Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.
Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.
2
Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright’s designs at Florida Southern College.
In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

DR. ANNE B. KERR College President Since her appointment
as Florida Southern College’s seventeenth president in 2004, D r. A n ne K e r r ’s v i s ion a r y leadership has enhanced the student experience on campus and increased the college’s national prominence. Under her direction, the institution has renewed its commitment to educate the whole person—academically, socially, spiritually and physically—in order to insure that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr oversaw implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for the College that was designed to enrich all facets of our student-centered culture. Opportunities for active learning and leadership were increased; innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction were prioritized; and the College’s scholar-athlete program became a national model for NCAA Division II athletic programs. Recent college improvements include ongoing restoration projects on the Frank Lloyd Wright campus and the construction of a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian House for use as a Tourism and Education Center, which will be the first Wright design built
2012 Women’s Lacrosse since 1966. Other new construction includes the two-building Barnett Residential Complex and the Christoverson Humanities Building (all three designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern), the McKay Archives Center, the Blanton Nursing Building, the Rinker Technology Center, and TûTû’s Café (located in the Roux Library). Further improvements include the complete renovation of the student dining facility (Wynee’s Bistro), residence hall and campus-wide technology upgrades, and a campus beautification project featuring dozens of interconnected plazas and gardens. Dr. Kerr graduated from Mercer University and received her M.S. and Ph.D. from Florida State University. Prior to assuming the Presidency at Florida Southern, she served as Vice President for Advancement both at the University of Richmond and at Rollins College. She has held numerous volunteer leadership roles, and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank, All Saints’ Academy, EarthLinked Technologies, Inc., the Polk Museum of Art, and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. She recently completed a two-year term as president of the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. Dr. Kerr and her husband, Roy, have a seventeen-year-old son, Ed, who plays baseball for All Saints’ Academy. Dr. Roy Kerr is a retired professor of Spanish and a baseball historian, whose recent publications include The Loving of the Game: a Baseball Memoir (2007); Sliding Billy Hamilton: the Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Man (2010), and Roger Connor: Home Run King of Nineteenth-Century Baseball (2011).
The Christoverson Humanities Building, which opened Fall 2011, is the latest of the numerous additions to the campus under the leadership of President Kerr. A Tourism & Education Center, based on a Frank Lloyd Wright design, is currently under construction.

PETE MEYER Director of Athletics
Now in his fourth year (201112) as Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College, Pete Meyer saw Moccasin teams enjoy another successful year in 2010-11. The women’s golf team finished third at the NCA A Division II Championship. The swimming team claimed four individual event NCA A championships (Mary O’Sullivan – 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, Jeb Halfacre – 200-yard backstroke and men’s 400-yard medley relay team). Twelve of FSC’s programs participated in NCAA postseason competition. FSC won Sunshine State Conference titles in men’s cross country (14th straight) and women’s basketball (regular season and postseason tournament), won the SSC women’s Mayor’s Cup Award and tied for second in the men’s Mayors’ Cup. That success combined to give the Moccasins a 19th-place finish, tops among SSC schools, in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports/ NACDA Cup standings and their 10th top 25 finish in the program’s history. Meyer also returned to the coaching ranks in 2010-11, taking command of the baseball program 12 games into the season and guiding the Moccasins to a final season record of 32-15. In 2009-10, FSC won its 12th NCAA men’s golf title and 27th national title overall and produced its first national champion in swimming (Jeb Halfacre – 200-yard backstroke). Eleven programs were represented in NCAA postseason competition, with men’s golf, basketball and cross country teams capturing SSC titles. In Meyer’s first year as AD (2008-09), Moccasin teams produced three SSC championships (men’s cross country, men’s basketball, softball) and a fifth-place national finish in women’s

golf. Eleven FSC teams went to NCAA postseason competition. Named to the AD position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, putting the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center, as well as the water ski program and campus intramurals under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, also served as assistant athletics director for Webb from February of 2006 until his AD appointment. In his previous stint as baseball coach (2002-08), Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, guiding the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title in 2005 with a 51-11 record. His head coaching record at Florida Southern is 282-121-1, while his overall record as a head coach is 321-151-1. Thirty-eight Moccasin baseball players have been drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure as head coach. Before officially assuming the reigns of head baseball coach in June of 2002, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under legendary head coach Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III program in 1991. His Oglethorpe teams won Eastern Division titles in the SCAC in each of his two seasons (1992-93). He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children - 23-year old Ross, 21-year-old Mitchell, who is enrolled at FSC, and 20-year old Megan, who attends Trinity University in Texas.

Reber came to Florida Southern from St. Mary’s College in Maryland, an NCAA Division III school, where she has been the women’s lacrosse coach the past two seasons, compiling a 21-14 record. In her first season at St. Mary’s, she coached the team to the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. Her team included one All-America selection, four all-region selections, five all-conference choices and the CAC player-of-theyear. Last season the team again reached the CAC Tournament semifinals, had three all-region selections, six all-conference selections and the CAC Rookie-of-the-Year, produced two all-academic selections and a team all-academic award from Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association and earned a Division III Community Service Award for completing 11 community service projects. “I am extremely honored to become part of the Florida Southern family and I want to thank the administration for giving me the opportunity to start the women’s lacrosse program,” Reber said. “With Florida Southern’s outstanding reputation in athletics excellence, I’m confident we will be successful in attracting student-athletes for the lacrosse program who can continue the school’s winning tradition.” Before she went to St. Mary’s, Reber was the women’s lacrosse coach for five seasons at Lycoming (Pa.) and produced a 47-34 record that included 14-win seasons in 2006 and 2007. Inheriting a
2012 Women’s Lacrosse program that had just six players, she was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Coach-of-the Year in 2006 after her team improved from a 5-8 season in 2005 to a 14-4 campaign in 2006. In her five seasons at Lycoming, she coached a two-time All-America selection, 10 allregion selections and 12 all-conference choices. Her 2008 Lycoming squad won the Division III Community Service Award by raising over $6,000 for breast cancer research. A native of Pittsford, N.Y., Reber began her coaching career at Newark High School in New York. She also coached at Bishop Neumann High School in Williamsport, Pa., where she was the 2005 Mid-Penn Soccer Coach-of-the-Year. WHY MOCCASINS? ...
Florida Southern College first used the nickname Moccasins in 1926, shortly after the college’s move to Lakeland in 1922. The water moccasin, or cottonmouth snake, was abundant in the nearby lakes and since the moccasin is one of the fiercest of all snakes, one that will attack unprovoked, the college adopted the moniker for its athletic teams. 8

Mocs Make a Difference in the Community The women’s lacrosse team may be the newest team on campus but they have already made a mark in the community. The Lady Moccasins have participated in 12 different community service projects since October and helped numerous organizations in the process. “I am blessed to be a part of a team that is so willing to give back and help others,” said head coach Kara Reber. “With all of the service projects the team has completed to date, it shows that they are passionate about making a difference in other people’s lives.” Through their various events the Lady Mocs have contributed to money, time, and effort in making a difference in the community. FUNDRAISING ... In November, the lacrosse team joined other Florida Southern teams in raising money for the Stroll and Roll. Stroll and Roll is an organization which raises money to build ramps for the handicapped at the home of someone in need. The team raised over $1,300 in addition to helping set-up, run the event, and tear down. HELPING OTHERS ... The players worked with Campus Ministries to make and delivered sandwiches and Gatorade to the homeless of Lakeland. Coach Reber and freshman Alexa Caffrey donated their hair to Lock for Love, which uses the hair for people battling cancer. During the April 7 home game against Queens University (N.C.), the Moccasins will be hosting an event where individuals can donate their hair. In November the Lady Moccasins took part in a campus-wide
blood drive, where 18 players gave blood. They also contributed more than 30 items to the canned food drive for Lighthouse Ministries for the holidays. The team donated 13 shoeboxes for the New Missions Shoebox Drive, which is design to send Christmas presents to Haiti. Each shoe box is filled with small toys, schools supplies, hygiene items, and clothing. The boxes will be given to boys and girls ages 4-18 for Christmas. TEACHING THE YOUTH ... The Moccasins have worked at a couple clinics throughout the fall to help share their knowledge of the sport. On October 28, the team taught at a youth clinic with over a 100 players and raised over $1,030 for St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. In December, a small group spent the day in Tampa at a lacrosse clinic helping teach elementary and middle school girls at their spring kick-off event. HOLIDAY SEASON ... The Moccasins have help make a difference during the holiday season. On December 3rd, thirteen players spend the day helping wrap Christmas presents at Lakeside Village. Others spent their day at Lighthouse Ministries helping sort through clothes and landscaping the area. The Moccasins also donated over $400 to Christmas 4 Orphans, which helps provides Christmas gifts for children in orphanages all over the world.

The Moccasins play their home matches at the Thomas W. Bryant Stadium located three miles from the Florida Southern College Campus. The stadium is adjacent to Henley Field which serves as the home ballpark for the Moccasin baseball team. Bryant Stadium features Field Turf grass. Along with Moccasin Lacrosse, Bryant Stadium hosts the Lakeland High School Dreadnaughts’ home games. Its press box is named in honor of Eric Murray. Who was Thomas Bryant? ... Thomas Bryant started Lakeland High School’s football program in 1907. He served three terms in the Florida State Legistature and spent 14 years on the Board of Control (which later became the Board of Regents) overseeing the state university system. As part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration in the 1930s, Bryant sought funding to build a new football stadium for the city of Lakeland. The funding was first approved in 1936 but later canceled. After several years of disappointing trips to Washington, Bryant finally secured $65,000 in federal funds, the stadium was built next to Henley Field, and on Sept. 26, it was dedicated and named in his honor. Florida Gov. Spessard Holland, a graduate of Summerlin Institute in Bartow made the dedication speech at halftime.
