Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun”
The Danforth Chapel is one of two chapels on campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The Thad Buckner Building is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.
The Esplanades, totaling 1.5 miles, line the west campus of Florida Southern College. The “covered walkways” connect the structures, actually weaving in and out, providing the pattern for the complex.
Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.
Frank Lloyd Wright often visited Florida Southern College during his 20-year relationship with the college.
Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957. In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

DR. ANNE B. KERR College President Since her appointment
as Florida Southern College’s seventeenth president in 2004, D r. A n ne K e r r ’s v i s ion a r y leadership has enhanced the student experience on campus and increased the college’s national prominence. Under her direction, the institution has renewed its commitment to educate the whole person—academically, socially, spiritually and physically—in order to insure that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr oversaw implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for the College that was designed to enrich all facets of our student-centered culture. Opportunities for active learning and leadership were increased; innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction were prioritized; and the College’s scholar-athlete program became a national model for NCAA Division II athletic programs. Recent college improvements include ongoing restoration projects on the Frank Lloyd Wright campus and the construction of a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian House for use as a Tourism and Education Center, which will be the first Wright design built
since 1966. Other new construction includes the two-building Barnett Residential Complex and the Christoverson Humanities Building (all three designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern), the McKay Archives Center, the Blanton Nursing Building, the Rinker Technology Center, and TûTû’s Café (located in the Roux Library). Further improvements include the complete renovation of the student dining facility (Wynee’s Bistro), residence hall and campus-wide technology upgrades, and a campus beautification project featuring dozens of interconnected plazas and gardens. Dr. Kerr graduated from Mercer University and received her M.S. and Ph.D. from Florida State University. Prior to assuming the Presidency at Florida Southern, she served as Vice President for Advancement both at the University of Richmond and at Rollins College. She has held numerous volunteer leadership roles, and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank, All Saints’ Academy, EarthLinked Technologies, Inc., the Polk Museum of Art, and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. She recently completed a two-year term as president of the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. Dr. Kerr and her husband, Roy, have a seventeen-year-old son, Ed, who plays baseball for All Saints’ Academy. Dr. Roy Kerr is a retired professor of Spanish and a baseball historian, whose recent publications include The Loving of the Game: a Baseball Memoir (2007); Sliding Billy Hamilton: the Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Man (2010), and Roger Connor: Home Run King of Nineteenth-Century Baseball (2011).
The Christoverson Humanities Building, which opened Fall 2011, is the latest of the numerous additions to the campus under the leadership of President Kerr. A Tourism & Education Center, based on a Frank Lloyd Wright design, is currently under construction.

PETE MEYER Director of Athletics
Now in his fourth year (201112) as Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College, Pete Meyer saw Moccasin teams enjoy another successful year in 2010-11. The women’s golf team finished third at the NCA A Division II Championship. The swimming team claimed four individual event NCA A championships (Mary O’Sullivan – 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, Jeb Halfacre – 200-yard backstroke and men’s 400-yard medley relay team). Twelve of FSC’s programs participated in NCAA postseason competition. FSC won Sunshine State Conference titles in men’s cross country (14th straight) and women’s basketball (regular season and postseason tournament), won the SSC women’s Mayor’s Cup Award and tied for second in the men’s Mayors’ Cup. That success combined to give the Moccasins a 19th-place finish, tops among SSC schools, in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports/ NACDA Cup standings and their 10th top 25 finish in the program’s history. Meyer also returned to the coaching ranks in 2010-11, taking command of the baseball program 12 games into the season and guiding the Moccasins to a final season record of 32-15. In 2009-10, FSC won its 12th NCAA men’s golf title and 27th national title overall and produced its first national champion in swimming (Jeb Halfacre – 200-yard backstroke). Eleven programs were represented in NCAA postseason competition, with men’s golf, basketball and cross country teams capturing SSC titles. In Meyer’s first year as AD (2008-09), Moccasin teams produced three SSC championships (men’s cross country, men’s basketball, softball) and a fifth-place national finish in women’s

golf. Eleven FSC teams went to NCAA postseason competition. Named to the AD position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, putting the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center, as well as the water ski program and campus intramurals under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, also served as assistant athletics director for Webb from February of 2006 until his AD appointment. In his previous stint as baseball coach (2002-08), Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, guiding the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title in 2005 with a 51-11 record. His head coaching record at Florida Southern is 282-121-1, while his overall record as a head coach is 321-151-1. Thirty-eight Moccasin baseball players have been drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure as head coach. Before officially assuming the reigns of head baseball coach in June of 2002, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under legendary head coach Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III program in 1991. His Oglethorpe teams won Eastern Division titles in the SCAC in each of his two seasons (1992-93). He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children - 23-year old Ross, 21-year-old Mitchell, who is enrolled at FSC, and 20-year old Megan, who attends Trinity University in Texas.

HEAD COACH TRISH RIDDELL The 2012 season will be Trish Riddell’s seventh as head coach of the Florida Southern women’s tennis team, and in each of the first six, the Moccasins have advanced to NCAA postseason play. During that time, the Mocs have posted an 98-43 overall record, and a 30-18 mark in the Sunshine State Conference, recognized as perhaps the most difficult Division II tennis league in the country. She ranks second in team history in both wins and winning percentage (.695). Twice during Riddell’s tenure the Moccasins have advanced to the region final, and in 2007, they won the first regional championship in team history. The Mocs went on to place fifth at the Division II national finals, equaling the best finish in their 40-year history. Last year’s team went 16-7 overall including 5-3 in the SSC, finishing fourth in the SSC regular season standings and ending the year ranked 11th in the ITA national poll. The Moccasins advance to the NCAA South Region Tournament for the sixth time under Riddell. The Mocs had three players named to the All-Sunshine State Conference team, including SSC Freshman of the year Sabine Goge. Thirteen of their 23 matches the Moccasins played last year were against ranked opponents. In those matches the Moccasins went 7-6, including 5-4 wins over 7th-ranked West Florida and 8th-ranked California (PA). Since Riddell took over the program in 2006, the Moccasins have 45 wins over nationally ranked teams. The team two years ago, was another testament to Riddell’s coaching ability, as the Moccasins had just six players, but still went 17-5, finished third in the SSC regular season standings, and ended the year ranked #14 in the ITA national poll. It was the seventh straight year the Mocs finished in the ITA top 20, and their .773 winning percentage was surpassed by only the 2007 region championship team in the last 20 years. Of the six players on the roster, three were named to the All-Sunshine State Conference Team, including two freshmen. 5
The Moccasins accomplished all of that while playing 12 of their 22 matches against other nationally ranked teams, with seven of them in the SSC alone. The Mocs were 7-5 in those matches, including a 5-4 win over 9thranked Rollins, the fourth different top-10 team the Mocs have beaten in the last four years. In 2009, Riddell led Florida Southern to a 16-7 overall record, and a 6-2 mark in the SSC. That included wins over 11th-ranked Nova Southeastern, and 12th-ranked Rollins, helping the Mocs to a second-place finish during the regular season, their best since the league went to a full round-robin schedule in 2004. In 2008, the Mocs had a nearly identical 17-7 record, with 16 of those 24 matches against nationally ranked teams. Among them was a 5-4 win over #5 West Florida that was Florida Southern’s first over a top-five team. The Moccasins went on to finish that year as regional runnerup, and among their accomplishments was an undefeated record at home for the first time since 1972. Even with all of Riddell’s success since then, 2007 still stands out as her best, and in fact, one of the best put together by any Florida Southern tennis team. The Moccasins tied a school record for wins by going 21-5, their .808 winning percentage was the best since the 1972 team went 8-0, and their fifth-place finish at the Division II National Tournament matched the accomplishment of the 1991 team, which had been the last to win 21 matches. Florida Southern ended that year ranked #8 in Division II, its highest final ranking ever. It was well-earned. Of the Mocs’ school-record 21 wins, 13 were against other nationally ranked teams and they played a total of 18 matches against such teams throughout the year. Two of those wins came over top-10 opponents, highlighted by a 5-3 victory over #8 Nova Southeastern in the regional title match. Put to the test nearly every week of the season, the Mocs responded brilliantly with a starting lineup that featured three freshmen, all of whom won at least 19 singles matches and 14 doubles matches. Playing the best competition is something the Moccasins have always done, and Riddell continued that tradition after being hired on August 1, 2005, as the sixth coach in the program’s 40-year history. Nearly two-thirds of her matches have come against nationally ranked teams, representing 45 of her 98 career wins. That type of schedule
2012 Women’s Tennis also provides another testament to the way Riddell improved the Moccasins after an 11-12 campaign in her initial season. That year, the Mocs lost to six ranked opponents they turned around and beat in 2007. Among them was perennial national power Rollins College, a team the Mocs beat for the first time since 1984. Even with that 11-12 record in 2006, Riddell still took the Moccasins to the NCAA Tournament in her rookie season as a collegiate head coach, and the team finished the year at #20 in the ITA rankings. Their record was even more remarkable considering the Mocs had just two returning players and injuries left them with a depleted roster in the middle of the season, forcing them to default at two positions in seven different matches. Among them were a 5-4 loss to #22 Indianapolis and a 6-3 loss to Division I SE Missouri State. During her six years at Florida Southern, Riddell has coached nine different All-SSC players, including 2-time SSC Player-of-the-Year Senka Softic. Under Riddell’s tutelage, Softic became the program’s first 4-time All-American (2007-10), and graduated as the school’s career leader in wins. Last year marked the fourth time in the last five seasons Florida Southern had at least three members of the All-SSC Women’s Tennis Team, and the Moccasins had four players with at least 10 victories in singles play. Riddell previously spent six years (2000-05) as an assistant coach at Rollins College, another member of the Sunshine State Conference. Under Bev Buckley, Riddell helped keep the Tars among the most prominent Division II programs in the country, with Rollins advancing to the NCAA Tournament each year. The Tars finished each season in the top ten of the final ITA Division II national poll, and advanced to the national semi-finals in 2000. A 1993 graduate of the University of Houston and a four-year letter winner for the Cougars, Riddell had a career singles record of 29-32, and a doubles mark of 25-15. She spent one year playing at the number one position in both singles and doubles. After graduation, Riddell earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Arkansas in 1995, and also served as the assistant women’s tennis coach during her two years in Fayetteville. From there, she moved to Palm Beach, Florida, and served as assistant pro at the 6
Florida Southern College
Seaview Tennis Center. In June of 1996, she was named the Director of Tennis at the Sheraton Vistana Resort in Orlando, and held that position until May of 2001. She also spent six months as special events coordinator and teaching professional at Amagansett Eastside Tennis Club in New York, which included assisting with the New York Hamptons in World Team Tennis. Riddell’s playing career is still going strong too. Not just a top-flight player in the United States, Riddell has also excelled at in the international level, playing in numerous tournaments even after her coaching career began at Florida Southern. Riddell has been a member of the U.S. senior tennis team since 2008, which competes in the International Tennis Federation’s Seniors World Team Championships. Riddell’s next competition will be her fifth ITF Seniors World Team Championships which will be held in San Diego, California in February 2012. In addition to her coaching duties at Florida Southern, Riddell is also a professor in the school’s sports management program. THE MOCS UNDER TRISH RIDDELL Year 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011

The Wynee Warden Tennis Center Coming Fall 2012
The Florida Southern College men’s and women’s tennis programs will have a new place to call home starting in Fall 2012 thanks to the generosity of Wynee Warden. The 10-court center is currently under construction on the east side of the campus beginning a new athletic complex that will ultimately include a new soccer/lacrosse field and intramurals fields for all students. Mrs. Warden and the Foundation have funded the College’s TûTû’s Cyber Café, Wynee’s Bistro, The Warden Admissions Center, Wynee’s Moc Cinema in the new Christoverson Humanities Building and also provided funding for nursing equipment in the Blanton Nursing Building. Mrs. Warden has also provided funding to name the complex’s two championship courts for her sons, Chandler Warden and Andy Warden. Other courts have been funded by Dr. Lester Wishnatzki in memory of his brother, Ernest Wishnatzki; Harriett Harris in memory of her husband, George Harris; Bennie Jo Murray in memory of her husband, Robert Murray; Mark Hollis; and Gil Mitchell ’62. Tami McGinty Coller ’80 and Trustee John Rodda are also generous donors to the Warden Tennis Center project. The new Wynee Warden Tennis Center will provide professional-quality courts and stadium seating for NCAA varsity competition, ITA qualifying tournaments, invitational tournaments, student and community recreational play, and tennis clinics for players of all ages. 17

The Moccasins play their home matches at the Beerman Tennis Center. The complex was named in honor of the Beerman family, which has been synonymous with the growth of tennis in the Lakeland community. Dave Beerman, Sr. has been a driving force in the tennis scene in Lakeland, leading an effort to spread the good news of tennis to area youths. Through his early efforts of allowing Polk County teams the use of the first city courts, Beerman has helped tennis grow to the county-wide success it knows today. Beerman was an outstanding amateur tennis player at No. 1 singles at East Nashville High School before moving on to play No. 1 singles for Tennessee Tech. Perhaps seeing tennis continue to grow is one of Beerman’s greatest joys and thanks to his guidance, the Moccasins can enjoy the Beerman Tennis Center and in turn, host some of the finest collegiate talent in the nation. The five varsity courts, located adjacent to the George W. Jenkins Field House, are named in honor of five outstanding tennis patrons: Jimmie Sikes, Bud Edsall, Scott Linder, Bill Lord and Richard Miller.
