WELCOME

TO

BISHOP LUFFA SIXTH FORM

The strengths of Bishop Luffa’s Sixth Form are its high academic results and its excellent pastoral care.

It is easy for students to get lost in big colleges, and not reach their potential. Bishop Luffa Sixth Form is big enough to be able to offer a full range of courses but still small enough that we can get to know our students and support them as they decide the route they are going to take as adults.

For our existing students there are already strong relationships with staff that lead to a very successful experience in Sixth Form. However, we also have a strong tradition of welcoming students from other schools into our Sixth Form. Our focus on the whole person, our higher education and careers programme and the community ethos of Bishop Luffa are attractive to many students, regardless of their background and personal beliefs.

I look forward to seeing you in September.

YOUR STUDY PROGRAMME

All our students will undertake the following formal activities:

3 A Levels for two years

All of our students take three A Levels. This forms the core of our standard study programme, as it does nationally at this level, and is the normal requirement for entry to Higher Education. We offer 32 A Level subjects to choose from.

An additional course: The Extended Project Qualification, Core Maths, a fourth A Level or GCSE Maths or English retakes

The Extended Project is an excellent way to build the skills required for further study. Many universities value it so highly that they provide alternative offers if an A* or A is achieved.

Core Maths is a really good way to develop the Maths skills that many A Levels require. It is a two-year course and carries UCAS tariff points equivalent to an AS Level.

It is possible to take four A Levels with us, most commonly Double Maths alongside two other subjects. We will discuss whether four A Levels are appropriate with applicants individually at interview.

Some students may qualify to come to Bishop Luffa yet will also need to re-sit English or Maths GCSE if they have not achieved a grade 4 or above.

Tutorial Programme

You’ll see your personal tutor for five sessions every two weeks. They will help you develop your A Level Mindset through our VESPA programme and also help you face the many challenges that the Sixth Form experience brings. They’ll be instrumental in helping you plan for your next step into university, an apprenticeship or a career.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

A series of lectures (one every two weeks) from visiting speakers will help you navigate life as a young adult and learn about the wider world.

Personal Development Programme

You’ll be encouraged to take a full part in the extra-curricular and academic life of the Sixth Form and school community and develop the skills you’ll need for your ambitious future plans. We’ll help you action your potential through a range of activities.

OCTOBER 2023 OPEN EVENING

NOVEMBER 2023 EXTERNAL APPLICATION DEADLINE

If you are applying from outside the school, then make sure your application is submitted by 13th November 2023 to be considered a priority applicant.

Scan the QR code for more information.

The Open Evening in October for prospective students and parents/carers gives you a fantastic opportunity to see the school, Sixth Form Centre and facilities, to hear from the Headteacher, our School Captains and Head of Sixth Form about the school’s ethos and culture and to visit subject departments and find out more about the courses you are interested in. You will also get a chance to speak to lots of current students who will be the best source of information on what our Sixth Form is really like!

DECEMBER 2023 A LEVEL TASTER DAY

A chance to choose up to five subject sessions to get a taste of what being a Sixth Former is really like. Try to choose new subjects that you want to know more about rather than ones you’ll definitely be doing (based on your GCSE experience). It’s often your third subject that’s hardest to pick!

JANUARY 2024 INTERNAL APPLICATION DEADLINE

If you are applying as one of our Year 11s, then make sure your application is submitted online by 22nd January 2024 to be considered a priority applicant.

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2024 INTERVIEWS & TOURS

We interview everyone who applies to our Sixth Form. We consider your current progress by looking at your most recent school report and attendance, and discuss your intended programme of study, entry conditions and future career. If we are able to make you an offer for your chosen courses, we will normally do so by the end of the Spring Term at the latest.

MARCH 2024 EXTERNAL APPLICANTS’ CONSULTATION AFTERNOON

This is a really good opportunity to revisit the Sixth Form Centre and meet our experienced subject leads. This can help you firm up your decision to join us and reassure you about your subject choice. You’ll also be able to meet members of the Sixth Form team and some current students too.

JUNE 2024 EXTERNAL APPLICANTS’ INDUCTION DAY

You’ll be able to meet your tutor, attend some Year 12 lessons and also get to know some other new students. We’ll take you to a local Escape Room and lock you in with other external applicants so that you have to make friends! In turn you’ll hopefully feel much more relaxed about starting somewhere new in September.

AUGUST 2024 GCSE RESULTS DAY AND ENROLMENT

Once you’ve collected your results you’ll need to enrol with us in person. You’ll have the chance to change subject choice, depending on your results and whether or not your future plans have altered. We’ll be able to offer you an enrolment interview at this stage if required.

SEPTEMBER 2024 INDUCTION

You’ll have a full day’s induction at the very start of the year which will enable you to get to know all you need to in order to make a great start to your A Levels and Sixth Form life. You’ll meet your new tutor too and there will be a year group lunch and social activities to help you mix and make new friends!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Additional Support

Support is available for any student who requires some help and guidance with their learning, not just those with a diagnosed or assessed need. We aim to work with you to make sure you have every opportunity to achieve your potential. We provide a range of support that is tailored to suit the needs of the individual student.

Students can bring work related to their studies to our new Support Hub, housed in the Sixth Form Centre, and address their difficulties with the help of our KS5 Learning Support Co-ordinator. Support can include help with essay writing, effective note-taking and organisational skills. We also provide support for Maths and English GCSE retakes through timetabled sessions with specialist staff. Students facing emotional difficulties can also book an appointment with our Sixth Form Pastoral Manager who will be able to signpost them to appropriate outside agencies and liaise with relevant staff.

16-19 Bursary

We can offer financial support if personal or family circumstances make it difficult for a student to continue their studies in the Sixth Form. A bursary fund is available to help cover the cost of extras such as textbooks, specialist resources, enrichment activities and travel.

Exam Access Arrangements

If you have had Access Arrangements and/or Reasonable Adjustments for Exams for your GCSEs we will assess you at the start of your time here to see if you will continue to need these arrangements during your studies. Our aim is to ensure that students develop the skills and strategies they need to manage their difficulties in preparation for a productive and fulfilling life.

If you have a specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia), a sensory impairment, mobility problems or anything else that affects your learning, please let us know via your application form.
