Curriculum

At Carlton, we place a high emphasis on a curriculum that fosters the holistic development of our pupils. The emotional, physical, academic, social, moral, spiritual, and cultural growth of every child is considered through the promotion of our core values.

The promotion of independent learning and challenge is at the heart of our curriculum. We strive to support pupils to be prepared for each phase of school and beyond. As a rights respecting school, the UNICEF principles and our core values are woven into our curriculum.

Our curriculum is mapped to include coverage of the National Curriculum and provides a range of experiences for our pupils through the expand curriculum. Our curriculum is designed to challenge, engage and motivate with the ultimate goal that our learners progress academically and become successful, confident individuals, who make a positive contribution to the community and society - both now and in the future.

Core Curiosity

Planning is carefully aligned with assessment criteria and meets the requirements of the National Curriculum. A webbed topic approach is taken to plan the foundation subjects. At the end of each block, pupils demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have learned.

Wider Curriculum

A wide range of extra-curricular activities are available during the year. These may include art, sport, drama and much more. All children will be consulted on an annual basis as to which activities they would be most interested in participating in. Here are just a few of the activities and clubs we offer:

• Hockey club

• Football club

• Boxing club

• Athletics club

• Dance club

• Art and well being

• Drama club

To fulfil the Intent, subject skills and knowledge are taught with the end outcome in mind. Subject objectives are progressively aligned with the assessment criteria. Enquiry based questions act as drivers for explorative learning. The process of learning is planned with the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach in mind. Nurturing a growth mindset, promoting metacognition, and nurturing learning behaviours is central to the children’s learning experience at Carlton JI.

Springboard Drivers

Knowledge is taught through a spring board driver which helps to catapult learning to the next stage. This driver is a line of enquiry that the children explore through our blocked units.

Carefully planned visits, activities, community links, skill workshops and life experiences enhance the learning of our pupils and develop their understanding of how they can contribute to the community and society.

The Early Years

We know the undisputed impact of great teaching on children’s progress and outcomes and are so very proud to be able to offer your child this in abundance.

Our nurturing and experienced Reception Team, along with PE coaches and Forest School teachers, come with a wealth of expertise and an unfaltering commitment to make a difference every day.

Starting school is a momentous occasion and we are here to support children and families alike as they embark on their exciting journey. Becoming a member of our school community begins long before the first day of term. A comprehensive transition programme of nursery visits, stay and play sessions, home visits, outdoor sessions and parent consultations ensure the all important first day is a time of excitement, exploration and happiness. We value parents and carers as first educators and, through the early years, strong, positive and supportive relationships with our families are established. Over your child’s first year, we will welcome you to; curriculum events, performances, school tours, celebrations, parent networking and more!

We go far beyond the delivery of The Early Years Foundation Stage statutory curriculum; our unique teaching and learning provision is designed with our children at its core and driven by the desire to level the playing field for each and every learner. Through a rich array of carefully planned enrichment experiences such as theatre trips, farm trips, visitors into school and visits to Santa, reception children at Carlton find awe and wonder in the world.

Reception children love learning at Carlton. We sing, discover and have fun every day. Our impressive outside environment and beautiful grounds are an extension of the classroom where children can ride bikes, balance, run, build, role play and explore nature. Reception children are given an extremely strong start in Reading, Writing and Maths and they are immersed in talk-filled classrooms where collaboration, exploration, purposeful play and rich language experiences are plentiful.

“One thing I deeply appreciate about Carlton J&I School is the inclusivity and sense of oneness that is encouraged, particularly as a parent of a special child... I send him to school with a peace of mind knowing my son will be accepted at school for who he truly is beyond his limitations, as well as knowing he will be guided to embrace and reach his full potential.” RUQAIYA

Inclusion & Equality

As a school, we promote the individuality of all our children irrespective of ethnicity, attainment, age, disability, gender or background.

We value all children and are committed to our whole school vision of ‘Dream, Aspire, Achieve… beyond excellence’ The mission statement of our school supports our commitment to valuing the individuality of children and providing them with every opportunity to achieve the highest of standards. We do this by respecting and taking account of pupils’ varied life experiences and needs.

Pastoral

There are times when we all need extra support.

Maybe it is time to share how we are feeling. Maybe we have so many thoughts racing around that we are unable to focus on our learning and need time to quieten our mind.

At Carlton, we believe in Maslow before Blooms, attending to children’s basic human needs before developing their academic and cognitive abilities. We have a dedicated pastoral team and a wealth of resources to support your child. We offer a chance to talk through; art therapy, lego therapy, counselling, the great outdoors and much much more. Our beautiful grounds give children opportunities to be able to learn holistically in a nurturing environment. The social and emotional wellbeing of our children is paramount and we know that happy children make successful learners.

Our approach to behaviour is therapeutic and places positive behaviour and prevention at the forefront. The children learn how to recognise their emotions and use strategies to help them self-regulate. The Zones of Regulation is taught as part of our extensive PHSE curriculum which provides all children with valuable opportunities to learn and develop socially and emotionally.

“My child loves being in this school. I appreciate how comfortable she is made to feel.” MRS. MAYAT

MRS. ALI

“This school provides so many wonderful opportunities for our children like going to Oxford, I wish I had that when I was their age.”

“All of your efforts are making a visible improvement in my child. Everything you’ve done has been greatly appreciated.”
