An Academy within Stratton Education Trust

Welcome Whether you are taking part in a visit to our school or are reading about us via our brochure or our web-site, we hope that by the time that you have finished you will agree that Gamlingay Village College is a school that works hard, achieves highly and is determined to be the best it can be at all times. Just as importantly, we hope that you will have seen that our pupils are young people who are happy, confident and who enjoy their learning. The school promotes personal achievement, responsibility, leadership and mutual respect for all members of our community. We reward and praise hard work and effort as much as success and achievement. We value the contribution that each pupil makes towards their learning and that each individual makes towards our community. Enjoy finding out all about us and if you haven’t been able to visit us in person, please get in touch. We think that you’ll be glad that you did. School

Ethos

Gamlingay Village College community is a small school that thinks big. We believe that our students should expect to receive an excellent standard of teaching that makes learning accessible, challenging and inspiring. We know nothing is taught until it is learned. The skills-set our teachers hold span a range of creative and exciting areas of expertise to be shared with our students in a range of powerful learning opportunities. We want our students to not only learn to love the different subjects but to have the drive and courage to pursue those subjects, even if they had doubts beforehand. We dare to use innovative techniques to create, support and maintain powerful, engaged learning and to build a legacy of life-long education in every single student. We care about helping our students to become resilient, determined learners who can reflect on their successes and know the process of self-improvement. And yet, we will always be an exceptionally warm and caring body of people, where every student is known personally and their self-esteem is fostered by positive relationships with other students and staff. We are principled about people and believe in showing respect for one another at all times.

Our School

We aim to create an atmosphere and an environment in which our pupils can thrive and flourish both academically and socially. We have high expectations of all of our pupils and encourage them to have high expectations of themselves. In each of the school’s four year groups we have two classes. In Years 5 and 6 (Key Stage 2) they follow a Primary School model curriculum, spending much of the week with their class teacher. However, being a middle school, our younger pupils are also able to benefit from the specialist secondary facilities that we have in Science, ICT, Technology, PE and Music. Our Year 7 and 8 pupils (Key Stage 3) follow a Secondary School curriculum model, being taught by a range of specialist teachers in specialist facilities. The Middle School organisation helps provide continuity and stability for our pupils in preparing them for the remainder of their Key Stage 3 education.

Pastoral Care

One of the many strengths of a small school is that pupils and teachers know each other well and develop close working relationships. Form tutors and subject teachers can work closely together with parents to ensure that every child is making good progress in their learning. All staff, including the Head of College and the Executive Headteacher, are available to talk to parents about their child’s learning. Providing a safe, secure environment which is vibrant, stimulating and challenging will enable all of our pupils to realise their potential.

Facilities

Both inside and out, the school boasts excellent facilities that enable our pupils to enjoy both learning and social activities. An ICT suite, Science laboratory, Art room and Technology workshops, Music room, All-weather outdoor sports pitch, indoor Leisure Centre and extensive playing fields and playground area, all add up to the necessary requirements for our pupils to excel in both work and play. Opportunities here at GVC are added to and extended through the access we have to the facilities at Stratton Upper School. There, our pupils are able to benefit from both the amenities and expertise that the Stratton Trust can offer across both sites.

Parents as

Partners

We are delighted to be able to say that our school benefits enormously from a very supportive community. Parents in particular take a great interest in the education of their children and this is illustrated in a number of ways. They make sure that pupil attendance at school is amongst the highest in the locality. Attendance at parents’ evenings and at Learning Plan Day is very high as is attendance at a wide range of curriculum evenings that take place throughout the year. Support for school teams, dramatic productions, activity days and charity events are always strong. The Parents’ Forum allows parents to meet with the Head of College during each half term throughout the year and discusses a wide range of issues to do with their children’s education. The Friends of Gamlingay group raises funds for school projects and provides refreshments at a number of school functions.
