WELCOME
to Howard of Effingham School.
Howard of Effingham School offers maximum opportunities for young people to develop academically and socially in an environment that is stimulating, caring and supportive. The school sets high standards, instilling values which enable young people to develop into confident and responsible adults.
The Howard has a well deserved reputation for academic excellence. Each year our GCSE results place us among the top comprehensive schools in Surrey and nationally. There is a natural progression into our Sixth Form where the courses on offer include both the traditional and the vocational. Our successes here enable the vast majority of our students who apply to University to secure one of their chosen places at Oxbridge and other leading institutions. In addition, many students embark on highly competitive apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships. For the latest GCSE and A Level results, please visit our website.
The pastoral organisation at The Howard ensures a sharp focus on the well-being and academic progress of our students. Rewards and healthy competition are encouraged through our House system. High standards of behaviour based on respect for each other and the school environment are paramount, and we work hard to foster a spirit of community and co-operation. An excellent range of extra-curricular activities, trips and leadership opportunities is available for our students making The Howard a vibrant community in which all are encouraged to develop their talents to the full.

The Howard is a traditional school with a passion for innovation. We are committed to developing happy and successful young people who will make a positive contribution to society as adults. It is our ambition that every young person will achieve as much as they can academically and will look back on their time at The Howard as an enjoyable and valuable experience.
THE THPT VISION
We will excel at “Bringing out the Best” in young people of all abilities and aptitudes and so increase their life chances for their future success and fulfilment.
OUR CORE VALUES
These values underpin everything we do at The Howard.
Ambition
We have the highest ambitions for ourselves, and believe that by working together, being determined and resilient, we can become the best version of ourselves and achieve amazing things.
Inclusion
We
were very impressed by all the activities at open evening as well as the enthusiasm of both the teachers and students. As we drove home, the first thing my son said was,
“I can’t wait to join the Howard.”
Parent
We are respectful of one another and celebrate diversity in our school, local community, and around the world with compassion and kindness. We enable all members of our community ‘to feel part of it’ and participate.
Opportunity
We seek out and seize opportunities which will develop our character, challenge us to be better each day, and give us the confidence we need to be successful.
OUR AIMS TO REALISE THE THPT VISION
1. A welcoming, creative, and community-based school where through high expectations, young people thrive and grow into proud, confident and responsible members of the global community.
2. A school where students enjoy and are reflective about their learning, and teachers develop and explore the passions for their subjects.
3. A school where students are celebrated and supported as individuals, have the very best experiences, and achieve exceptional results.
OUR CURRICULUM INTENT & THPT MISSION
We will ‘Bring out the Best’ by providing a rich curriculum experience within and beyond the classroom. This will enable our young people to thrive personally and academically, overcome challenges, and make a positive contribution to society.
Pupils value the educational opportunities they receive at this school. They are ambitious and want to succeed. They engage well with their teachers and peers.

Thank you to the PE department for all the time and effort invested in starting a B team for football and for all the positive encouragement they have given to the boys playing in it.

A key strength of the school is the care, guidance and support it provides. Rigorous academic monitoring procedures are in place to ensure that all do as well as they can.
Thank you to all of the staff involved in ‘Legally Blonde.’ It was an amazing production to watch and must have taken so much time and commitment from all the staff involved. One of my daughters was in the cast and loved the whole experience. Thank you for giving her such a great and memorable opportunity.
OUR STAFF
All members of our teaching staff are highly qualified and all are graduates with specialist qualifications in their respective subject areas.
The Principal is supported by a team of senior leaders, and curriculum areas are led by Heads of Faculty. Pastoral teams comprise a Year Leader, Assistant Year Leader and Year Manager.
Our commitment to ‘Bringing Out The Best’ also applies to our staff, and we invest heavily in Professional Development. We offer a wealth of career opportunities and the number of long-standing members of staff is testament to this.
CURRICULUM, PASTORAL CARE AND SUPPORT
Our curriculum provides inspiration, challenge and support for all students.
The curriculum is timetabled in a ten-day cycle of 50 one-hour lessons. On joining the school in year 7 students are placed in one of two populations, Arks and Royals. These groups are of equal size and represent the full ability range.
For registration and pastoral purposes, a population is further divided into four mixed ability tutor groups, each under the care of a Form Tutor. The members of a tutor group will be in the same House. In years 7 to 9 (Key Stage 3), all students follow a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum. The languages offered at The Howard are French, German and Spanish. Students in Key Stage 3 also participate in a Personal Development lesson twice per cycle, daily Learning for Life sessions where they follow the PSHE and RSE curriculum and regular assemblies.
Full details of our Key Stage 4 programmes are published annually on our website.
We have a very strong pastoral structure which supports students emotionally and academically so that they can be happy and successful at school. This enables us to deliver our aim of ‘bringing out the best’ in all our students.
Leaders have developed an ambitious curriculum for all pupils. They have designed this well to ensure that pupils learn and remember the important knowledge they need to succeed in the future.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
Last year was a busy one for Howard students with school trips to many international destinations:
Students from Y8,9 and 10 travelled to Murcia, Paris, Lille, Rome and the Rhineland alongside residential trips to Osmington Bay and Barton Hall. Y10 History students visited Krakow and closer to home, East London for their Geography field trip. Y10 & Y12 Media and Drama students experienced seeing The Warner Brothers’ studios as well as theatre trips to London. Y13 Chemists went to Lisbon, Physicists to Cern, Historians to Dublin and Geographers to Swanage.
There was a ski trip to Zell am See in Austria in February and in the summer Y12/13 students took part in Operation Wallacea a conservation expedition to Honduras. It has been a truly international year. Closer to home saw our D of E students undertaking bronze and silver activities and there was a range of career talks and external speakers to the school.
School productions, musical evenings and art exhibitions are regular features of the school calendar. Last year saw a drama production of Peter Pan and the musical ‘Legally Blonde’ at the Leatherhead theatre with over 100 students taking part. There was also Howardfest, our own mini version of Glastonbury.
Sport at the Howard is exceptional and the number of teams and competitions in which we participate enables students to compete at the highest level. We also take an inclusive approach to sport encouraging participation at all levels. Please do visit the website for more details.

SIXTH FORM
The vitality of its Sixth Form is a key pointer to the strength of a school.
Our Sixth Form is popular, attracting applications from the wider school community, and students’ achievements are considerable and varied. Most students go on to Higher Education including courses at Russell Group universities and Oxford and Cambridge. Some go onto Art colleges and apprenticeships.
Senior students play a key role in the leadership of the students at the Howard whilst enjoying the independence of their own centre and community.
Visit the website or howardsixthform.org to find out more.
Sixth-form students enjoy an exceptional quality of provision. Leaders have designed a very effective curriculum to support students in their academic subjects and wider sixth-form experiences. Teachers have the highest expectations of students to achieve to the best of their ability.

SAFEGUARDING
At Howard of Effingham School we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
All adults who work with students are DBS checked. We follow Surrey Local Authority’s safeguarding procedures and where necessary work in partnership with other agencies that support children and families, to ensure we address the needs of our students with sensitivity, care and confidentiality.
THE HOWARD PARTNERSHIP TRUST
The Howard Partnership Trust (THPT) grew out of a long-standing federation, the first in Surrey, originally formed in 2007 at the request of the Department of Education and Surrey Local Authority.
The Trust now comprises a diverse range of primary, secondary and special schools across Surrey.
All our schools uphold a shared vision in which there is a commitment to ‘bringing out the best’ in young people of all abilities and aptitudes, so increasing their life-chances. Those working in partnership with THPT are justly proud of the strength of collaboration and inclusion present in each of our schools. We believe that by embedding a culture built around our ethos of partnership, inclusion, excellence and energy, our vision can succeed. The inclusive ethos of the MAT is enhanced by a number of Special Centres attached to mainstream settings.
Schools within THPT remain local schools and retain their own unique features to serve their local communities. However, they are all underpinned with the same guiding principles: namely to ensure that a first rate education is provided through consistently high quality teaching which facilitates excellent learning within an inclusive, caring, vibrant environment. THPT schools provide a student-centred, broad curriculum with a personalised approach where the individual student lies at the heart of everything we do.
