Church

of England Grammar School

A Brief History

Hutton Church of England Grammar is a school with a rich and proud history of serving the parish of Hutton and the surrounding areas that stretches back to 1522. Over time this has developed into the thriving, forward thinking school of today; a school with outstanding results and a firm hold on traditional values.

Welcome from the Headteacher

On behalf of all the staff, governors, pupils and students, I would like to welcome you to Hutton Church of England Grammar School and Sixth Form. Hutton Church of England Grammar School is a very special comprehensive 11-16 school for boys and co-educational Sixth Form. Our pupils and students, past and present, are excellent ambassadors for the school and are proud to be Huttonians.

We are the only non-selective, non-fee paying 11-16 school for boys in Lancashire and we are very proud of our Christian traditions and long standing reputation for educational excellence. We have high expectations for our boys, welcoming boys of all abilities, interests and aptitudes. As experts in boys’ education we provide a nurturing, holistic education where all our boys can flourish.

This prospectus and our website can only give you a brief glimpse of school life and I believe that you cannot fully appreciate any school until you visit it either at an Open Evening or during a normal day. This is particularly true of our school, where visitors always comment on the calm, friendly and happy atmosphere. This was something that I noticed when I first visited this school and was immediately impressed by its warm and welcoming setting. I would urge you to visit us to experience, first-hand, the ethos of our school.

I am delighted to be the Headteacher of a school with a proud past and an exciting future. I look forward to welcoming you.

Pastoral Care at Hutton

As a Church of England school we believe in creating an environment where all pupils can flourish. We see each boy as a unique individual with God given talents. For this reason pastoral care sits at the heart of all we do as a school. From our transition days in Year 6 we begin to build strong relationships. Whether your son is on a five or seven year journey with us, we aim to guide our boys on a daily basis, encouraging them to build strong relationships. This relational foundation is a key character we see in our resilient, mature and confident young men empowered to use their talents throughout their time at Hutton and their life beyond.

Form tutors are the first point of contact for the pupils and their parents. We place great importance on the role of our tutors as they work with each Learning Co-ordinator in guiding and encouraging the pupils within their form and year group. We see strong home school relationships as key to the success of our pupils and believe communication with all our families is vital. Growing up at secondary school can present

different day-to-day challenges and sometimes additional in-school support can be required. The work of our form tutors is supported by the year group Learning Co-ordinator, our SENDCO and Pastoral Support Team. In addition, our long established House System provides pupils with an additional identity within school and the responsibility of contributing to their house. The Head of House and Senior pupils are dedicated to support all pupils to be their best and play an active part in a House System which promotes teamwork and friendship.

At Hutton we are incredibly proud of our heritage and that generations of families have chosen to send their boys to our school. We are also excited to meet those pupils who will be the first generation to attend Hutton. We look forward to seeing all our pupils grow and develop within our caring church school community and it is an ongoing privilege to discover the different paths our Old Huttonians have taken in their life beyond school.

‘Parents and Carers…particularly value the ‘superb pastoral care’ given to their children and often to them and their wider families.’

Curriculum

Our curriculum at Hutton Church of England Grammar School offers ambition and equality of opportunity to all. It is designed so that pupils enjoy ‘Life in all its Fullness’. We believe in the holistic growth and development of all in our school community. We aim to develop young people to become literate, numerate, confident, critical thinkers, with a passion for learning of the arts, humanities, languages, sciences and technologies. We aim to instil in pupils an awareness of their uniqueness, their place in the world and a love of God, neighbour and environment. Our hope is that we nurture the potential of our pupils so that they can find their vocation and take their place as responsible members of our communities and society.

We do not educate in isolation but aim to work with our wider community to allow our young people to flourish. Working with parents,

parishes, primary schools, our Sixth Form and employers is key in the successful education and formation of the young people in our care. Our aim is to provide a friendly, safe and supportive environment where everyone feels valued, respected and supported. Our pupils enjoy an excellent standard of teaching by subject specialists who know how boys flourish and ensure access for all to a broad and balanced curriculum. Together, our inclusive, distinctively Christian ethos is one where excellence is promoted and achievement is celebrated. Christ’s teaching guides and inspires us to develop young people who can live life in its fullest; His teaching and example are the basis of our daily life, relationships and future hopes.

‘The school’s Christian ethos creates an environment in which students are challenged and supported to be the best they can be. This makes a very significant contribution to their academic progress and attainment.’ SIAMS
