A warm welcome to huxlow At Huxlow we believe that students who are happy, feel safe and are taught well, will enjoy school and, as a result, become successful adults. Our students are challenged to aim for the highest expectations they can and are motivated and supported to achieve this. Academic success is hugely important to us. We have a rich history of students of all abilities and from a wide variety of backgrounds fulfilling their potential in all areas of their education. Huxlow is about far more than academic success and developing “The Whole Child” is one of our core responsibilities. In order to “Open doors to brighter futures”, it is important that our students develop characteristics such as independence, resilience, ambition and compassion. We are passionate about caring for our students and ensuring that they are all known as individuals. Educating the whole child is at the heart of everything we do at Huxlow. We strive to provide the highest quality academic standards as well as a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities. Through a rich curriculum with an emphasis on active engagement, students are encouraged to develop a thirst for learning and a desire to succeed. Individual student needs are met through an effectively differentiated curriculum, including a tailored provision for the Most Able. Extra-curricular opportunities including Student Voice, committees, after school and lunch clubs also promote the development of essential life skills. The following key skills run through our academic and enrichment activities in order to develop the whole child and prepare our students well for their futures.

STUDENTS AND STAFF FEEL SAFE AND HAPPY AT SCHOOL At Huxlow Science College we believe that pastoral support is fundamental to the wellbeing and overall success of each of our students. Our pastoral system is a key part of our strong Huxlow community where every individual matters. Form tutors know their tutees well and our house system develops the responsibilities of different ages working together and respectful values which underpin our College. Central to the College is the Pastoral Centre whose staff are dedicated to ensuring that the students have a safe environment to visit if they have problems or concerns. We are committed to placing Huxlow at the heart of the wider community and believe that the relationship between Home and College is critical; we work together to ensure that students reach their full potential.

THE CURRICULUM AT HUXLOW We foster a love for learning across our entire community We offer an excellent and cohesive Curriculum encompassing the following curricular areas as laid down in the National Curriculum: •

All years study English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Studies, Physical Education, French and Technology. • At Key Stage 3 (Years 7 – 9) students also study History, Geography, Music and Drama. • At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), alongside our core subjects, students make a number of option choices from a range of subjects including History, Geography, Additional Sciences, Drama, Music, Examined Physical Education, Health and Care, Motor Vehicle, Animal Care, Hair and Beauty and Construction. Our Key Stage 5 provision is delivered alongside our Partners - The Ferrers School and The Rushden Academy. Our joint provision has the most comprehensive choice of subjects in the County; twenty nine A Levels plus six additional Level 3 courses as well as two Level 2 post-16 options. OPPORTUNITIES AND ENRICHMENT There is a strong commitment from our staff to offer our students an inclusive, and enriching educational experience, both within the curriculum and through the wide range of extra-curricular opportunities such as clubs, visits and activities on offer to all students. This enrichment experience broadens our students’ horizons and prepares them well with life skills, communication skills and independent skills for the best start to their next phase of learning, wherever their strengths and qualities will take them. The excellent range of opportunities are varied, exciting and challenging, aiming to extend students’ skills, creativity and abilities in all areas of the curriculum including drama, choir, orchestra, bands, music group, technology, science, ICT, languages and Performing Arts. We are very proud of our students’ successes at every level and believe that all milestones should be celebrated. Technology and Science are very high profile at Huxlow and their aspirational standards are reflected in our curriculum and results. Inspiration is achieved through our many residential trips, where travel and enrichment through global experiences is key. For example, our highly popular trips to Normandy, Paris, WW1 Battlefields, Cadbury World, Imperial War Museum and Bath over the last few years have given our young people chances to experience new places and cultures. There are also theatre trips to various shows, as well as visiting speakers, authors and theatre groups. We are extremely proud of our sporting achievements. Our students repeatedly achieve excellent results at District, County and National level in this competitive arena. Many team and individual sports are run as clubs and activities by our motivated and competitive Physical Education team. The experience of ‘Excellence Week’ is one that is always remembered by our students, as we challenge them to participate in a number of enrichment activities, visits and activities to enhance their individual strengths and stretch their aspirations. Huxlow’s vision is lived out through every opportunity we provide, striving to ‘open doors to brighter futures’.
