A WELCOME FROM OUR PRINCIPAL I AM DELIGHTED THAT YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT SIR GEORGE MONOUX COLLEGE AND THE SIXTH FORM OPTIONS THAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE. We are a Sixth Form College for students who are ready to make the step up from school to college and want to progress towards Higher Education and high skill employment. Students at the college are proud of how much they move forward in their first year at Monoux. They embrace new approaches to study and enjoy meeting new people. Students tell me that they are amazed at the excellent behaviours and relationship between staff and students at Monoux. We have created a unique learning community, which enables our students to develop personal attributes and abilities alongside their academic or vocational qualifications. Our college day starts later than you will be used to from school. Our entry period is at 9.35am so that we have time to welcome you each day and make sure that you are ready to learn when lessons start at 10.00am.

During the week you will take part in activities and opportunities outside of the classroom, including working with the wide range of employers who want to support Monoux students. We call this programme of activities FutureFest. We support students by focusing on speaking skills, leadership ability and resilience in a complex world. We have high standards and expectations but enable you to become independent. I hope that you will be inspired to make an application with us, and I look forward to meeting you soon. COLLEGE LIFE GIFTED AND TALENTED ACADEMY

STUDENT LIFE 1. MONOUX PASSPORT

If you have been identified as a high academic achiever you can apply to join our Gifted and Talented Academy, a collective of fifty highly academic minds. The aim is to share skills, develop leadership and strengthen thinking.

All students complete the Monoux Passport, a space to reflect on both your personal development and learning. Termly Passport Days include time for reflection, professional conversations with staff and workshops on important topics such as your University application or finding a work experience placement.

Academy students benefit from a dedicated study space, an account for purchasing books, a personal laptop to assist with research and opportunities for additional talks, overseas trips and online courses. Academy students also widen their study programme through an additional A Level, Further Maths or an extended project.

2. FUTUREFEST FutureFest is a key part of the Monoux Passport and will help you develop the valuable skills and competencies that universities and employers look for. As part of your study programme, you will sign up online for activities. Students are actively encouraged to form their own societies to add to the list. These include sports, events, workshops, visits to employers, fun trips, societies and masterclasses such as the ones below:

Bespoke support is provided to prepare students to apply to Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group Universities. This includes trips, summer schools, residential stays and talks from highly acclaimed academics.

STUDENT SUPPORT PERSONAL SUPPORT At Monoux we get to know you and the support you need to help you to achieve. We have a range of staff to help you. Every student is allocated a Personal Mentor who will maintain an overview of your progress in college and can be approached at any point for advice. You can also arrange to see our College Counsellor.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT When you start college, you can apply for financial support through the bursary and free college meals based on your household income.

LEARNING SUPPORT If you have medical conditions, physical disabilities or specific learning needs (e.g. Dyslexia, Dyspraxia) we will provide you with personalised support. Our Additional Learning Support Assistants work closely with students, supporting them in the classrooms or on a one-to-one basis. We also have access to specialist Dyslexia support and all our buildings have wheelchair access.

PROGRESS COACHES Our team of Progress Coaches are based in the library. You can book sessions with them for help with assignments, study skills or to revise a certain topic.

SPORT MONOUX SPORT Sports and fitness activities are open to all students at Monoux College whether you want to play, participate, compete or keep fit. We aim to provide high quality sport and physical activity opportunities for individuals and teams, from recreational level through to high level competitive opportunities. We provide fully qualified sports coaches, activators and instructors for all of our sport and physical activities.

Cricket Programme Basketball Programme Football Programme Students can apply to study ANY course in ANY subject at BTEC Level 2, BTEC Level 3 or A Level and gain full access to the Focus Sport Programmes.

COMPETITIONS & SPORTS FACILITIES

FOCUS SPORT PROGRAMMES

The college competes in a variety of Leagues, Cups, Tournaments and other Competitions in a wide range of sports. There is also an extensive programme of intra-college competitions.

Monoux College offers talented 16-19 year olds the opportunity to be selected for one of our focus sports programmes, training and competing at a high level in your chosen sport alongside your studies.

Students at Monoux College are able to access excellent sporting and fitness facilities. These include: Sports hall, fully equipped gym, football pitch, cricket lanes & non-turf cricket pitch.

PARENTS We consider the involvement of parents or carers of our students vitally important to their success with us at the College. We will talk to you about how you can support your daughter or son and our expectations of your involvement. We will inform you early on about what our expectations are for our students. For example, all our students are given a folder and stationery at the beginning of their course and we foster good note-taking and good organisation skills right from the beginning. Through the parent portal (ProPortal), you will be kept up to date with your daughterʼs or sonʼs progress and will have access to data relating to their targets, attainment and attendance. Of course, you will also be invited to come in and talk to us at our Parents’ Evenings. We are really proud of our College and our relationships with parents; we have a fantastic team of staff who work together to ensure you are kept informed and up to date.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COURSE LEVELS EXPLAINED QUALIFICATIONS BTEC

BTEC & A LEVEL MIX

The Extended Diploma is coursework based and at the end of two years it is equivalent to 3 full A Levels. In the first year, this is called a BTEC 90 Credit.

BTEC Certificate Level 3 is equivalent to half an A Level and at the end of two years a subsidiary is equivalent to a full A Level. Students successfully combine this with 2 other A Level to make a full study programme.

The National Diploma is coursework based and at the end of the two years it is equivalent to 3 full A Levels. In the first year, this is called a BTEC National Foundation.

CAMBRIDGE TECHNICAL (OCR) The Extended Diploma is coursework based and at the end of the two years it is equivalent to 3 full A Levels. In the first year, this is called a Cambridge Technical Subsidiary Diploma.

A LEVEL You will choose 3 A Levels and will study these for 2 years. A Levels are almost entirely exam based.

GCSE AND FOUNDATION MATHS AND ENGLISH Working towards and achieving GCSE and Foundation Maths and English is vital for many pathways into employment, apprenticeships and higher education. At Monoux we provide GCSE and Foundation Maths and English classes to ensure you achieve these qualifications alongside your chosen subjects. All GCSE and Foundation English and Maths courses are one year long and are assessed through exams. If you have English and/or maths at grade 3 or below, you will continue to study this as part of your programme.

After your interview, you will receive a letter to confirm the details of the offer. The offer will be based upon the conversation you had during your interview centred around your career and university aspirations.

TASTER SESSIONS

Prior to enrolment, you will be invited to attend our keep warm activities including advice evenings and taster sessions. The taster sessions are a great way to explore your interests and the diverse topics from the different learning areas. This is a good opportunity to explore the learning areas and receive subject specific advice before you enrol.

ENROL

After receiving your GCSE grades, you will be expected to attend your enrolment appointment, which we will schedule for the days following the publication of GCSE results. At this point, you make choices about your study programmes. We devote quality time to your enrolment, discussing your personal development goals, your employability aspirations, your support needs and achievement targets.

STUDENT INDUCTION

Once you have enrolled with us, we then provide you with all the details you need to start your first day with us as a Monoux Student. You will be given full details of your induction week. Your first few weeks are packed with exciting occasions, people to meet, societies to join, getting to grips with your new timetable, the Monoux App and traveling to college. It is a completely new life being a college student and we are sure that you will be glad you joined a college with a 10am lesson start time!

CAREERS The careers programme at Monoux College is designed to provide all students with the education, information, advice and guidance to help them make the right career decisions. The programme aims to raise aspirations and support students to achieve their full potential whilst they are in college. Students benefit from a dedicated Careers & Employability team, with a breadth of experience.

There is a focus on making all students aware of the opportunities that apprenticeships, employment and higher education has to offer. Strong links and partnerships with employers and universities provide the chance for students to experience a range of insight days, mentoring, university visits and work experience opportunities.

This course has been designed to be taken alongside other vocational or A Level qualifications.

• Performing on stage

The Level 3 Certificate in Performing Arts (Acting) will give you all the basic essential skills (use of body, voice, physical expressions, communication with an audience) required for performing on stage. It will also develop your key skills such as working within a team, concentration and organisation. You will develop your knowledge about the principles of acting and various acting styles by studying well esteemed theatre practitioners such as Stanislavski and Brecht which will then help you to create fabulous shows on stage. You will also learn about the various job roles in the industry. You will also have the opportunity to do extra workshops with industry professionals and see various outstanding theatre shows.

This course prepares students who wish to pursue a career in Art & Design.

• Short projects building slowly into longer projects so that you develop the skills you need to achieve high grades.

This course has been developed to provide students with an interest in art and design with the opportunity to explore the materials, methods and processes that support art and design activities. You will develop technical skills and have an excellent opportunity to explore, develop and test your creativity and self-confidence. You will learn how to work with 2D (drawing, painting, printmaking, digital), 3D (sculpture, model-making, ceramics) and time-based (photography, video, film, animation) media. The year ends with a final project where you will show off the skills you have gained during the course and exhibit your work in the college.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

DISTINCTIVE MODULES

The Level 3 course prepares you to either progress to higher education, or seek work in the creative industries.

• The first part of the course is designed to enable you to try new things and identify what you like doing.

The course is characterised by experiential, experimental and integrated learning. The qualification focusses on the application of practical skills and the identification of common principles and distinctive characteristics of different art and design disciplines. On this course you will learn how to work with 2D, 3D and time-based media through more complex tasks than those set at Level 2. The focus of the course is on creative problem solving supported by research and analysis so that you can define, understand and contribute to the area in which you wish to work.

• The second part of the course involves you working more independently to put your new skills into practice and to experience working within the area that you eventually wish to be employed in. • Each year ends with an exhibition of your work to prepare you for professional practice within the creative industries.

Jiri has achieved extremely high grades on the extended diploma and has gained a place at Newcastle University to study landscape architecture. He has made the most of opportunities at Monoux, including being part of the William Morris Gallery Young Curators program.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A Level (Year 2)

This course has been designed to provide engaging and innovative learning experiences, where art, craft and design practice is meaningfully integrated with theoretical knowledge and understanding. Students are encouraged to develop a broad foundation of critical, practical and theoretical skills with a holistic understanding of a range of practices and contexts relevant to the art, craft and design fields, culminating in greater specialisation and achievement.

• Term One: Component 1 - personal investigation (internally assessed, externally moderated. 60%)

There are four assessment objectives which can be broadly defined as research, experimentation, idea development and presentation.

WHICH OTHER COURSE DOES THIS COMBINE WELL WITH?

Most of our resources are free to use within the department. The art department keeps a stock of additional art materials such as sketchbooks and 35mm film. Students are expected to purchase a basic materials kit for personal use for £20 at the start of the year.

• Term Two: Component 2 - externally set assignment (internally assessed, externally moderated. 40%) • Term Three: Complete Component 2.1 - installation of end of year show.

• All subjects can provide useful and interesting stimuli for art projects. • Analytical written and presentation skills are useful. History, English, Sociology and Politics.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE ASSESSED? DISTINCTIVE MODULES AS (Year 1) • Term One: Foundation course covering: art theory; research skills; ideas generation; primary recording; materials and techniques workshops including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture and photography. • Term Two: Personal creative inquiry (internally assessed, externally moderated) 100%. • Term Three: Completion of personal creative inquiry unit, installation of the end of year show, introduction to A Level. 22

This course has helped me to be more aware of the world around me. I have learnt how to revise better and become more interested in these subjects beyond my college work and assignments. It is a fun way to keep fit and to develop core personal skills such as team work, self-discipline and problem solving. You will participate in productions and practice the key physical and interpretive skills needed in performance.

A Level Graphic Design is a practical subject where you will have the opportunity to develop your unique ideas into actual pieces of visual communication. The course is very hands-on and you are expected to engage with a wide variety of technical and creative disciplines ranging from hand-drawn sketches to computer generated designs.

Throughout your two years of study you will develop skills in illustration, typography, editorial, advertising, branding, package design, design for print, computer graphics, multimedia design, animation and special effects, web and app design and game design.

Throughout both years of the course you will be immersed in a wide variety of approaches to visual communication. These include posters, adverts, logos, album covers, t-shirts and interior design. The significance of typography will also be explored with an emphasis on how the careful combination of words and images can completely alter the reading of a text. Outside of class, you will carry out detailed research into branding and design by attending festivals such as the D&AD Awards, which celebrates creative design and advertising across the world. A Level Graphic Design lessons take place in a designated Art & Design studio space. The space includes access to both the traditional and digital tools necessary to fully experiment and create innovative visual work. Sketchbooks are used to collate research and to chart the development of your idea from a concept to an actual working piece of visual communication. Personal exploration is encouraged throughout the course.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology has been designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to degree-level study and employment within the media sector. There is no exam so you are assessed entirely on practical coursework. This provides you with a substantial portfolio and show reel evidence (a requirement for most creative jobs, university courses and apprenticeships). Compared to exam based courses it more accurately reflects the demands and challenges of working in the creative industries. If you have an interest in media or you want to explore, develop and test your creativity then this is the ideal course for you.

Assignments are deliberately diverse to reflect the varied nature of the creative industries but some of the projects learners produce throughput the course include:

COURSE DESCRIPTION It is impossible to understand the world we live in today without an awareness of the role that the media plays in all aspects of our society. Roger Silverston (London School of Economics and Political Science) said it best: “Media is at the core of experience, at the heart of our capacity or incapacity to make sense of the world in which we live.” In A Level Media Studies you will take ownership of the content by engaging in lively debate and thought provoking discussion, often covering a range of topics such as politics, economics, culture and social relations. A sophisticated understanding of media theory is developed throughout the course, which feeds directly into the production of creative media coursework. In addition, you will develop skills of enquiry, critical thinking, debate, decision-making and analysis. The course involves trips to galleries, photography visits and talks from professionals. We will support you but self-motivation and commitment are very important and working on your project outside lesson times is essential.

• Particle and quantum physics

In year one you begin your journey with fundamental principles of physics – particle and quantum physics. • Unit 8 – Science of Health

In this unit students will look at how lifestyle decisions affect a person’s health and well-being. Students will also consider genetic disorders and how these can be diagnosed and screened.

This Level 2 course will combine some elements of biology, chemistry and psychology. This can help you decide which part of science you are most interested in.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

DISTINCTIVE MODULES

Spanish is one of the core languages of world business and governments and is the official language of countries across several continents.

Core content

You will develop your oral skills [speaking and listening] through conversations and presentations, and develop your ability to write and read Spanish to a more sophisticated level. You will study a novel and a film and consider the socio/cultural background to the stories and their impact as well as the construction and ideas in the texts themselves.

WHICH OTHER COURSE DOES THIS COMBINE WELL WITH? The course combines well with; English language, English literature, geography, government and politics, history, journalism, religious studies, sociology and French.

PATHWAY PROGRESSION ACADEMIC PROGRESSION To progress onto Year 2 of the course students will be expected to reach a D grade at AS Level. Spanish can be studied at degree Level on its own or part of a combination course e.g. Marketing and Spanish, English and Spanish, etc.

EMPLOYMENT PROGRESSION Spanish is a highly sought after talent that can make all the difference in job applications to a wide range of jobs.
