Hailsham
Community College
Welcome to our college
From the Principal
As a parent myself, I understand that choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make. I hope that this prospectus will give you a flavour of our ethos and values, as well as the wide range of opportunities that are available to our students. Hailsham Community College is built on a commitment to academic excellence and the highest of personal standards, within an environment which provides each individual with the care, support and encouragement that he or she needs to succeed. We pride ourselves on traditional values such as hard work, respect, courtesy and integrity, whilst preparing young people for all the challenges of life in the 21st century. Our staff and governing body are passionate in ensuring each student is given the best possible learning experiences. They are dedicated professionals who strive to make the College a happy and safe environment in which to thrive. Our students are our best ambassadors. I hope you will visit the college in person, meet our students and see us at work. I look forward to welcoming you. Phil Matthews Principal
Mission
Ethos
Our mission is to inspire a passion for learning that will form the foundations for changing lives.
At Hailsham we have 5 expectations that are reinforced across the College.
We have four pillars for success:
• Consistency: Treating all of our community equally whilst ensuring their individual needs are met
• Students who believe they can achieve the very best they can and who aspire to secure pathways to higher education or employment. They will develop as well rounded, respectful and polite individuals who are seen as ambassadors for the college and positive role models in the community. • Staff for whom we are the employer of choice, providing a great place in which to work and an environment where they can continue to develop. • Parents/Carers who know that Hailsham Community College really cares about their children, recognise that it has effective strategies to meet individual needs and for whom the college provides a consistent environment to entrust the education of their children. • A Community for whom we are the college of choice through our endeavour to achieve the highest possible standards.
• Aspiration: Raising student expectations so that they aspire to be the best they can be • Respect: Promoting values of respect and tolerance between each individual and the wider community • Behaviour: Creating an environment where positive behaviour for learning is promoted through our wholecollege rewards system • Standards: Reinforcing our uniform standards and expectations of personal responsibility to prepare students for the working world.
Joining a new school, whether it be as a new Year 7 student or a student transferring into another year group, can seem a little daunting. We pride ourselves on making the admissions process as smooth as possible and offer a transition programme to all students who join us. We have a House System which is designed to fully support all students throughout their time at the College. Student House Leaders and Mentors support our young people so that they have the best possible learning experiences, and they work with both students and parents to ensure any barriers to learning are overcome. Students are represented by the College Council which comprises of representatives from every mentor group. This is led by our very own Student Leadership Team who meet regularly with senior staff to consult on areas of strength and development.
Pastoral Care
An Inspirational Environment We want all of our students to aspire to achieve great things. We are proud to have developed links with a range of guest speakers, and alongside our high quality careers programme, we are able to deliver excellent advice and guidance.
Curriculum
In addition to extra-curricular activities, we believe that learning outside of the classroom is crucial in bringing learning to life whilst helping students to raise their own aspirations.
Our aim is to provide students with outstanding learning opportunities both within and beyond the classroom. Our curriculum offers a broad and challenging range of subjects, which are designed to deepen student understanding and ignite a passion for learning.
We have great opportunities for students to experience life beyond the classroom; within work experience settings, through a wide range of educational visits and journeys, and exciting activities which all aim to broaden student experiences and cultural knowledge.
There is a strong emphasis on the development of literacy and numeracy in Key Stage 3, whilst in Key Stage 4 there is a focus on developing key transferable skills which will help students to progress onto post-16 study.
Our Sixth Form We welcome students into the Hailsham Community College Sixth Form from a wide range of local schools. Membership of the Sixth Form provides students with a thriving and successful environment in which to continue to study and grow. We have an excellent record in supporting students into employment or onto the University course of their choice. As well as a continued commitment to academic excellence, students in the Sixth Form are particularly encouraged to show independence, personal responsibility, and leadership. There is also a strong tradition of community service and support for younger students.
