BRINGING OUT THE BEST

I just wanted to write and thank you and your staff for the great five years my son has had at the Howard. He arrived in Year 7 two years behind his reading age ‌within weeks your staff had him on a programme and continued to support and encourage him throughout his time at school. I watched his confidence grow... and this was actively promoted by all who taught him. Although he had been initially forecast mostly Ds and Es at GCSE he managed passes in all but 2 subjects and got As in history and geography - massively exceeding his and our expectations. We are extremely grateful for all the school has done for him. I think it is truly the mark of a high achieving school when they can bring up less able pupils to such a degree. Thank you so much. Being just one individual in a school of many pupils, it is great that I feel that I can make a difference by making a suggestion, it being adopted and now a trip being planned. This has inspired me to continue to speak out and bring out the best in myself. Student

CURRICULUM, PASTORAL CARE AND SUPPORT Our curriculum provides inspiration, challenge and support for all students.

8

BRINGING OUT THE BEST

The curriculum is timetabled in a ten-day cycle of 50 one hour lessons. On joining the school in Year 7 students are placed in one of two populations, Arks and Royals. These groups are of equal size and represent the full ability range. For registration and pastoral purposes, a population is further divided into four mixed-ability tutor groups, each under the care of a Form Tutor. The members of a tutor group will be in the same House. In years 7 to 9 (Key Stage 3), all students follow a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum with the additional subjects of two modern languages, drama, citizenship and a tutorial (Learning 4 Life) programme. Full details of our Key Stage 4 programmes are published annually in our “Upper School Courses” booklet. We have a very strong pastoral structure because we are committed to ensuring that every student is happy and successful at school. The pastoral team works hard to remove barriers to learning and to support students emotionally and academically. This enables us to deliver our aim of ‘bringing out the best’ in all our students.

Excellent relationships between staff and students are complemented by the expert subject knowledge of teachers‌ Students value the energy and enthusiasm that teachers exhibit in lessons and greatly appreciate the constant support and encouragement they receive. Ofsted Just wanted to drop you a mail to thank you and your staff and pupils for an excellent open evening last night. SIXTH FORM

The vitality of its Sixth Form is a key pointer to the strength of a school. Our Sixth Form is popular, attracting applications from the wider school community, and students’ achievements are considerable and varied. Most students go on to Higher Education including courses at Russell Group universities and Oxford and Cambridge. Some go onto Art colleges and apprenticeships. Senior students play a key role at the Howard whilst enjoying the independence of their own centre and community. Visit the website or howardsixthform.org to find out more.

THE HOWARD PARTNERSHIP TRUST

The Howard Partnership Trust (THPT) grew out of a long-standing federation, the first in Surrey, originally formed in 2007 at the request of the Department of Education and Surrey Local Authority. The success of this federation between Howard of Effingham, an Ofsted Outstanding school, and Thomas Knyvett College resulted in the formation of THPT when the partnership’s first primary school, Kenyngton Manor, joined in 2013. The Trust now comprises a diverse range of primary and secondary schools across Surrey. All our schools uphold a shared vision in which there is a commitment to ‘bringing out the best’ in young people of all abilities and aptitudes, so increasing their life-chances. Those working in partnership with THPT are justly proud of the strength of collaboration and inclusion present in each of our schools. We believe that by embedding a culture built around our ethos of partnership, inclusion, excellence and energy, our vision can succeed. The inclusive ethos of the MAT is enhanced by a number of Special Centres attached to mainstream settings. Schools within THPT remain local schools and retain their own unique features to serve their local communities. However, they are all underpinned with the same guiding principles: namely to ensure that a first rate education is provided through consistently high quality teaching which facilitates excellent learning within an inclusive, caring, vibrant environment. THPT schools provide a student-centred, broad curriculum with a personalised approach where the individual student lies at the heart of everything we do.
