Welcome to the sixth form course guide Significant changes to A Level qualifications have been introduced over a two year period. The link between AS and A Level qualifications has been removed which means that from September 2016 all A Level courses will be two year linear courses. All subjects will therefore be examined at the end of the second year of study with only Maths, Technology, Italian and Media Studies retaining the link between AS and A Level, for one more year.
Our expectation as a school has subsequently changed, we anticipate that nearly all students will now follow three subjects over the anticipated two years of study in the Sixth Form. We hope this booklet makes those options and choices as clear as possible. All students will receive advice and guidance when making their choices.

INTRODUCTION: The A Level Art course is designed to improve your creative abilities. You will have the opportunity to work with a broad range of media, including new and traditional technologies. You will carry out research from primary and secondary sources, undertake close analysis of artists’ and designers’ work, experiment with techniques and processes and develop ideas leading you to create personal and original outcomes.
INTRODUCTION: Biology is a challenging, rewarding course that helps students develop skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career. It offers students freedom, creativity and opportunity for independent progression from GCSE. This specification allows all students to show what they can do, as well as being suitable for those looking to be stretched.
WHERE DOES IT LEAD? You will build up a portfolio of work for entry on to Art Foundation courses and Degrees in Art & Design areas. Degrees include Fine Art, Graphic Design, Fashion, Architecture, Illustration, Textiles, Animation, 3D Design, Ceramics, Interior Design, Glass and Jewellery Design, Set Design, Film, and many more, leading to a range of careers in the creative industries. COURSE DETAILS: A Level Art comprises of 2 components: Component 1. Personal Investigation 60% Part 1. Practical work from personal starting points, supporting studies and personal outcomes. (72 marks) Part 2. Personal study. A piece of continuous prose of a minimum of 1000 words. (18 marks) Component 2. Externally set Assignment 40% Externally set broad based theme released in February. Students submit preparatory studies and personal outcomes. Students create final responses to the theme in a sustained focus period of 15 hours of controlled assessment. CHEMISTRY LEVEL: A Level EXAMINATION BOARD: Edexcel INTRODUCTION: Chemistry is the central science and overlaps other science areas. We build on skills from GCSE science and then throughout the course we emphasise the need to explain and understand things that happen either in the outside world or in a test tube! WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Chemistry is a valuable A Level for entry into a wide range of careers. Most of our A Level chemistry students enter higher education. It is essential that students considering Medicine,Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Chemical Sciences and Forensic Science, study Chemistry, but many other degree courses view Chemistry as a desirable subject. COURSE DETAILS: We cover equal amounts of organic (carbon based), inorganic (metal based) and physical (energy based) chemistry within both qualifications. computer Science LEVEL: A Level EXAMINATION BOARD: OCR INTRODUCTION: Computer Science is a challenging course. At its heart it requires you to solve problems. Not just mental problems like Sudoku, or the Towers of Hanoi, but big human problems too. Computer Science is a special subject that crosses the boundaries of other subjects - it is a humanities subject as well as a science and a branch of mathematics. Behind the algorithms and the technology there is also a fascinating story of human achievement. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? You can study Computer Science for a lot of reasons; it can be seen as a passport to a good course at university or a good career. The reason most likely to lead to success is that at some level you find the subject interesting and you expect to have fun doing it. Writing computer programs gives you “instant feedback�, teaches you to persevere with problems that you may not succeed at first time and great satisfaction once they are finally overcome. COURSE DETAILS: The characteristics of processors, input, output and storage devices. Software and software development. Problem solving and programming. Exchanging data. Data types, structures and algorithms. Legal, moral, ethical and cultural issues. Computational thinking. Programming problem covering analysis, design development of a computing problem. DRAMA & THEATRE LEVEL: A Level EXAMINATION BOARD: AQA INTRODUCTION: This course is about making and understanding theatre and learning about how it reflects the world around us. The course is both practical and there is a significant amount of theory and writing. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? It will be useful if you are thinking of all sorts of careers such as media, advertising, public relations, teaching, sales or journalism as well as areas associated with theatre. Gaining an A Level in Theatre Studies shows employers that you are confident, able to communicate well and cooperate in a group situation. COURSE DETAILS: You will explore two contrasting set plays and will write about them in a written examination. You will also see a range of live theatre and analyse and evaluate the actors’ skills and design techniques used. Additionally there is a strong practical element to the course and you will perform both scripted and devised work to public audiences. ECONOMICS LEVEL: A Level EXAMINATION BOARD: Edexcel INTRODUCTION: Economics is truly all around us, present in almost every aspect of our lives. It is the study of allocation of scarce resources. So if you are inquisitive about the world around you, for instance, why do footballers get paid so much money? Or what causes poverty in world or why Apple has been so successful then this is for you. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Economics is a highly regarded subject with many post A Level opportunities in both higher education (degrees) and employment, e.g. banking and finance, in addition to post degree employment in both the private and public sector. COURSE DETAILS: It is an examined subject that develops many skills through essays, presentations, examinations, research, debates and much more. Things we study: Why is petrol taxed so highly? How can UK deal with its obesity problems? What causes unemployment? Should the government still pay for a universal health service? Is it the end for Tesco? Is there still a need for the high street and high street shops? When will China become the richest country in the world? What has held back development in Africa in the last 50 years? Will the UK leave the EU and what would be the effects? Importantly, why is chocolate running out in October 2020? ELECTRONICS LEVEL: AS/A2 EXAMINATION BOARD: AQA INTRODUCTION: The A Level course will introduce and prepare students for the technological world of the 21st Century. The course covers the relevant theory to give students a full appreciation of where electronics is coming from and where it can lead us. Just look at your current mobile phone and think of the first one you had, what has changed, how much more can it do? WHERE DOES IT LEAD? A Level Electronics is seen by universities as a “science subject�. It complements Physics, IT and Maths A-levels for students who are considering Engineering, Applied Physics or Computing degrees or careers. There is a great opportunity for specialisation in many different specific fields such as Avionics and Bioelectronics and Robotics. COURSE DETAILS: Units for AS (Year 12) Unit 1: Introductory Electronics: examination 35% of AS or 17.5% of total A Level marks Unit 2: Further Electronics: examination 35% of AS or 17.5% of total A Level marks Unit 3: Practical System Development: coursework project 30% of AS or 15% of total A Level marks. ENGLISH LITERATURE LEVEL: A Level EXAMINATION BOARD: AQA INTRODUCTION: English Literature is a course for students who enjoy reading as well as developing their ideas through discussion and close textual analysis. Students study a range of texts within a particular theme. They also gain an understanding about the contexts in which these texts were written and about the different ways they were received in the past and can be read now. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? English Literature is a highly regarded qualification. It is an essential qualification for a wide range of Higher Education courses, especially those relating to the worlds of communication in the Arts and the media, there are few areas of life which do not benefit from increased skills of critical analysis and personal expression. The course is also rewarding and enjoyable in its own right. COURSE DETAILS: There are two main areas of focus: Love Through the Ages and Texts in Shared Contexts. Students also have the opportunity of non-exam assessment. This is a comparative critical study of two texts culminating in an extended essay. Paper 1: Love through the ages: 3 hour exam,40% of A Level with both open and closed book elements. Paper 2: Texts in shared context: 2 hour 30 minute exam, 40% of A Level, open book. INTRODUCTION: A Level French allows you to develop your understanding of spoken and written forms of French. You will be encouraged to communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in speech and in writing, with emphasis on both practical communication and grammatical accuracy. You will also develop insights into French society and culture.
INTRODUCTION: This course encourages students to gain enjoyment, satisfaction and a sense of achievement as they develop their knowledge and understanding of the subject. This A Level course will enable students to be inspired by their geographical understanding, to engage critically with real world issues and places, and to apply their geographical knowledge, theory and skills to the world around them.
WHERE DOES IT LEAD? There are many degree courses of which a language can form a part, for example, French with Law, Management and Business Studies, Engineering and Economics. Most Language Degree Courses offer the opportunity to work or study abroad. A Level French is also a valuable qualification for many careers such as The Hotel & Tourism industry, Engineering, Marketing or Sales and Business. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Geography combines well with both arts and science subjects. It is a broad based subject that really fits well for your future progression. For example, urban regeneration, energy supply, retail location, town planning, managing the effects of hazards and climate change, law, human rights, international relations or welfare: geography is an obvious choice. COURSE DETAILS: The aims and objectives of this qualification are to enable students to build on their knowledge and skills to: • develop their knowledge of locations, places, processes and environments, at all geographical scales from local to global across the specification as a whole • recognise and be able to analyse the complexity of people environment interactions at all geographical scales • improve their understanding of the ways in which values, attitudes and circumstances have an impact on the relationships between people, place and environment. German LEVEL: A Level EXAMINATION BOARD: AQA INTRODUCTION: Through Years 12 and 13 you will continue to develop your language skills through a range of stimulating topics as well as focus on the modern day culture and issues facing German speaking countries. The materials studied will come from current newspapers, magazines, TV and radio broadcasts as well as the internet. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Some students choose to continue their Language Studies by following a degree course at university, often beginning an additional language from scratch. There are also many degree courses of which a language can form a part, for example, Languages with Law, Management and Business Studies, Engineering or Economics. GOVERNMENT & POLITICS LEVEL: A Level EXAMINATION BOARD: Edexcel INTRODUCTION: Government and Politics appeals to students keen to understand more about current affairs and particularly, how the British political system works. The Y12 course concentrates on the British political system, while in Y13 we analyse a variety of political ideologies and their impact. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? The subject combines well with a wide range of other subjects and can lead to many post GCE opportunities in both higher education and employment in Law, the Civil Service, Journalism etc. COURSE DETAILS: Year 12 Unit 1 How democracy works and fails to work in the UK Unit 2 How the UK is governed. These units are each worth 25% of the A Level. Exams will be sat in the summer of Year 13. Year 13 Unit 3 Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism and Anarchism. INTRODUCTION: History offers an in-depth study of Britain under Stuart rule, revolving around conflict, revolution and its settlement (30%). We will also study Russia in Revolution 1894-1924 under the rule of the last Tsar and Lenin (20%). The A Level will include the study of Civil Rights in the USA 18502009; from Lincoln to Obama (30%) and a personal study (20%) as your coursework, possibly focused upon Modern Britain. Together these four units make up the A Level History course.
INTRODUCTION: If you choose to study Italian at AS and A2, you will build on the language and grammar skills you have developed at GCSE. You will develop greater fluency in your spoken and written work as well as learning about Italian society and culture. By the end of the course you will be able to communicate well in Italian and you will have a good knowledge of this beautiful country.
WHERE DOES IT LEAD? This course is very popular and history is widely recognised by universities and employers as a useful, academic and very significant subject. Apart from being a recognised qualification for higher education, History is a valuable subject for entry into a wide range of professions including, Law, Politics, Journalism, the Civil Service, Management and Industry. COURSE DETAILS: There will be three linear exam papers all sat in the summer of Year 13. As well as sitting one exam paper on each of the modules studied in Year 12, students will sit a further third paper on Civil Rights in the USA 1850-2009, their main area of study in Year 13 and then also complete and submit a personal study as coursework (approximately 3,000 words). Students may choose suitable titles for research and we are currently considering topics like Modern Britain or the Tudors 14851603. If you choose to go onto higher education you will have the opportunity to study Italian either in conjunction with another language or with other subjects such as law, business studies and art history. In employment, AS and A2 Italian could be of use in careers as diverse as tourism and the Armed Services. Maths LEVEL: AS/A2 EXAMINATION BOARD: Edexcel INTRODUCTION: Maths is a rigorous subject which develops problem solving, analytical skills and logical argument. It provides a basis for many disciplines such as sciences, engineering and finance. Maths is a good combination with A Levels in Sciences, Geography, Economics and Music or as a complementary subject to arts AS levels. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Maths is an essential requirement for further study and careers in a range of professions such as Finance, Engineering, Medicine, Economics, Accountancy, and Computing. COURSE DETAILS: Units for AS (Year 12) This course is designed to be a natural progression from the GCSE programme. The course is modular in structure, consisting of 2 Pure Mathematics modules and 1 Statistics module. Assessment is through end of module examination. Units for A2 (Year 13) Students will complete another three modules at A2 Level: Core Maths 3 and Core Maths 4, which completes the pure programme of study, and a further applications module Mechanics 1, Decision 1 or Statistics 2. Please note that unlike other A Level courses, Maths is still modular and the AS modules taken in Year 12 make up half of the final A Level qualification. maths (furtheR) LEVEL: AS/A2 EXAMINATION BOARD: Edexcel INTRODUCTION: This is the double option Maths choice, where you will study for two years and achieve two full A Levels in Maths. In Year 12 you complete the A Level Maths course. In Year 13 you complete the A Level Further Maths course, which you could do at AS or A2 level. The course includes topics from four areas: Pure Mathematics: algebra, trigonometry, geometry and calculus. Mechanics: vectors, forces and motion. Statistics: interpreting data, probability. Decision Maths: application of Maths to managing commercial and industrial problems. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Maths is an essential requirement for further study and careers in a range of professions such as Finance, Engineering, Medicine, Economics, Accountancy, and Computing. COURSE DETAILS: Units for AS (Year 12) Students will study Core 1, Core 2, Core 3, Statistics 1 and Mechanics 1 during Year 12 and sit an individual exam of each of these module during the summer examination period. Core 4 will be studied at the end of Year 12, but the examination will be taken in Year 13. Units for A2 (Year 13) During Year 13 you will continue six Further Maths modules: further pure Maths 1, 2 & 3, and three applications modules chosen from the remaining mechanics, statistics and decision options. media studies LEVEL: AS/A2 EXAMINATION BOARD: OCR INTRODUCTION: The department aims to provide students with learning which is relevant to living in the modern world, to make them aware of the media industries’ influence on student’s everyday lives. We also aim to enable and facilitate the development of skills, which can be applied in a range of different career pathways. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Excellent preparation for all careers involving communication skills. The high level of critical analysis in written debate provides a firm academic foundation for many higher education courses. Subjects which go well with Media Studies are English Literature, Sociology, Theatre Studies, Art & Design, Economics, Business and Leisure & Tourism. COURSE DETAILS: Units for AS (Year 12) Unit G321: Practical coursework in which students research, plan and produce the opening sequence to a new film. 50% of the final AS mark. Unit G322: There are two exam focuses, the first being the British Film industry and the second being an analysis of an unseen TV drama. 50% of the final AS mark. Units for A Level (Year 13) Unit G324: Practical coursework in which the students can choose to either produce a music video, documentary or film trailer. 50% of the final A2 mark. Unit G325: There are two exam focuses, the first being a theoretical evaluation of the student’s practical production and the second is a study of the representation of British youth in contemporary cinema. 50% of the final A2 mark. PHYSICAL EDUCATION LEVEL: A Level EXAMINATION BOARD: OCR INTRODUCTION: The course is designed to allow you to develop theoretical knowledge, critically analyse and evaluate sporting performance and apply your experience of practical activity in developing your knowledge and understanding of the subject. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? The course will prepare you for further study of P.E. and Sports Science courses as well as other related subject areas such as Psychology, Sociology and Biology. The course will create confident, independent thinkers and effective decision makers. COURSE DETAILS: You will learn theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance. You will understand how physiological and psychological states affect performance. You will understand the key socio-cultural factors that influence people’s involvement in physical activity and sport. Also the role of technology in sport will be analysed along with the contribution physical activity makes to health and fitness. INTRODUCTION: The study of Photography will deepen your understanding of the visual world across different times and cultures and introduce you to the diverse roles and functions of Photography in contemporary life.
INTRODUCTION: A Level Physics builds on skills and knowledge gained in GCSE Science and then explores how Physics defines the way that forces and energy shape our world. It is a fast developing, exciting Science which is often at the forefront of modern technologies.
You will learn how to use a digital camera; experiment with a range of photographic processes and techniques; develop digital techniques including image manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. You will research from primary and secondary sources, undertake close analysis of artists’ work, and develop ideas which will lead to creative and original final pieces. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Advertising, graphic design, textile design, fashion design, product design, computer animation, visual communication, fashion, fine art and documentary photography, portraiture, sports photography, television, film, and teaching. COURSE DETAILS: AS Photography comprises of 2 components: Component 1 Personal Investigation 60% Part 1. Practical work Part 2. Personal study
WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Physics is an extremely well respected qualification. The main employment sectors are engineering, business, the I.T. industry, research, finance, development and medicine (Some medicine courses require Physics). product design LEVEL: AS/A2 EXAMINATION BOARD: Edexcel INTRODUCTION: There are two pathways in this qualification - Resistant Materials Technology and Graphic Products. Both courses are based around the design process but allow students to specialise in the materials area of their choice. The Product Design courses are rewarding and enjoyable, allowing students to develop their skills, to learn new ones and be creative. Both courses involve Computer Aided Design (CAD), which is taught as a distinct element of the course and uses state of the art software - ‘CATIA’. Adobe Photoshop is also taught as part of the course. We are also now able to offer Computer Controlled Manufacture in both Graphics and Resistant Materials. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Students continue into further or higher education, studying graphics product design, architecture, interior design, engineering, car design or many other specialist subjects. Some students use the course to gain entry to apprenticeship courses, such as helicopter and aeroplane engineering, building and construction and furniture design, to name but a few. PSYCHOLOGY LEVEL: A Level EXAMINATION BOARD: AQA INTRODUCTION: Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. Therefore students study theories which try to explain why we do what we do. For example, how accurate are eye witness testimonies? Or, what factors effect our obedience? We apply these theories and pieces of research to everyday life, making it relevant to everyone. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? The course is well suited to students who have a genuine interest in understanding human behaviour and the scientific analysis of it. This can lead to a related degree (usually a BSc), or work in many other areas, since the skills obtained are transferable. A psychology degree can lead to work in criminal, forensic, educational, clinical, counselling, sport, environmental or occupational psychology as well as being applicable to other careers, such as media. You will discover the importance of good communication and the correct way to treat service users. You will be expected to go out into the community to carry out research with different client groups. It offers the opportunity to study the needs of young children through to older people. You will learn through a variety of different methods, namely interviewing people, putting together case studies, listening to outside speakers and putting on presentations. INTRODUCTION: The creative industries are growing in importance in the UK and this one year course is an ideal foundation for media students, providing them with an understanding of the media through engagement with media products, production processes and technologies. It encourages application of practical and creative skills, whilst also developing an analytical approach. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? This is a practical and creative course which provides useful skills that transfer to the workplace. COURSE DETAILS: This unit aims to allow students to understanding media institutions, how they work and the products they produce. They’ll look at production processes, target audiences, distribution and marketing through the analysis of Hollywood and UK independent films. Unit 2 - Animation Production Planning for and producing a short one or two minute animation or section of an animated production are key to this unit. Unit 3 - Planning and producing a media product Students will generate ideas for their own original short film while taking this unit. They’ll then use one of their ideas to plan and produce a final original media product, gaining both pre-production and production skills.
