OUR VALUES Knavesmire Character helps every child develop the positive values they need to support their achievement and wellbeing. Our emphasis on decision making encourages children to take risks with their learning and responsibility for their own emotional and spiritual growth. Ultimately, we aim to nurture children who are aspirational in their goals, hard working to achieve their aspirations, resilient when challenged and exuberant in embracing life.
THE BIG IDEA
THE BIG IDEA The Big Idea is the heart of the education we offer. Pupils are passionate about their learning because they own it: they help create their own curriculum to explore what excites them. Whether calculating the mathematics of Quidditch, or putting on their own music festival, children acquire skills and knowledge in creative ways that engage and delight them. Creativity has long been recognised as the key that turns raw talent and hard work into something exceptional. At Knavesmire, we believe that teaching centred on creativity is the best way to unlock every child’s potential. A diverse curriculum showcases each pupil’s individual abilities. Clear shared goals encourage ambition. And creative activity inspires every pupil to go further than they ever thought possible.
SPORT Knavesmire Sport helps children be active and healthy, as well as developing life skills such as teamwork and determination.

We recognise that children do best at sport when they enjoy it; and they enjoy it most when they achieve their best. Pupils are not pressured to perform, but are supported to succeed both individually and collectively. And when our children do well, team success often follows.
THE ARTS At Knavesmire, the arts are not separate subjects but are embedded in everything we do. Our focus on the arts enhances learning by making it fun and purposeful, while giving each pupil the opportunity to explore their own creativity. Passion for the arts enriches our children’s lives; it unleashes their talents, and helps them understand the world more deeply.

ENRICHMENT Children learn best when they learn about things that are real to them. Our enriched curriculum throws open the classroom doors so that pupils can experience the reality of what they learn. A trip beyond the school gates might be as close as pond-skimming in Rowntree Park, or as far as our partner school in Barcelona. A planetarium might appear in the school hall, or actors from York Theatre Royal drop in to teach drama. By providing these opportunities, we enthuse both our teachers and our pupils, raising ambitions and setting high standards across every aspect of learning.
ENRICHMENT
COMMUNITY We know that our children are part of many communities: school, local, national and international. At Knavesmire, the sense of these different communities flows through our curriculum. Our pupils appreciate the relevance of cultures both familiar and different. They develop the communication skills and empathy to build lasting and effective partnerships. Through innovation, enterprise and technology, they prepare to thrive in an ever-changing future. Above all, they learn the behaviour and values that will guide them wherever they go.
