WELCOME ON BOARD

It is my pleasure to welcome you to The London Nautical School. Situated in the very heart of central London, the school was established over 100 years ago as an educational establishment to help all pupils achieve their full potential, this remains our core purpose. Our aim is for pupils to experience an education that develops all aspects of their personality and encourages them to become well-qualified, secure, happy, young adults able to manage themselves personally, socially, and academically and who are tolerant of difference. At LNS we believe in excellence for all and have the highest expectations for every one of our pupils. We want all our young people to enjoy a memorable and successful education in an inclusive environment, where each individual’s unique talents are recognised and valued. LNS has a reputation for being a happy, friendly, stimulating and caring environment. OUR SCHOOL HISTORY

We are very proud of our rich heritage and connections with the Maritime industry. Following the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 there was a recognition that improvements in seamanship were required and a number of nautical training schools worked to improve standards. The London Nautical School is the only one of those training schools that remains with a nautical and maritime ethos. As an institution the school has been in existence since 1915 then as the Rotherhithe Nautical School as it was known; based in three rooms at Rotherhithe New Road (Higher Grade) Boys School. By 1937 the nautical training section of Rotherhithe New Road School had outgrown its premises and the “Rotherhithe Nautical School” became a separate institution which moved to Galleywall Road School in Rotherhithe. The school was evacuated during the Second World War and returned briefly to Rotherhithe before moving to our next home on Broadwall in Southwark. Finally in 1965 the London Nautical School arrived at our current location on Stamford Street, still maintaining its focus on supplying recruits for the Navy and Merchant Navy well into the 1970’s. To this day our school offers maritime qualifications from L1 to Level 3 to our students who aspire to a career in the maritime industries.

STUDY AT LNS

CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT At the London Nautical School, we provide exciting and challenging learning experiences for our students, both inside and outside of the classroom. Our curriculum is designed to support each individual’s academic progress and achievement, embracing the rich history and diversity of our school as well as our unique central London location. Our Year 7 experience includes a dedicated enrichment element, unique to the London Nautical School, which focuses on developing students’ wider understanding and knowledge of the world we live in. Our students’ learning journeys are based around the core pillars of Success, Aspiration, Integrity, and Literacy; with the aim of achieving their fullest potential in an ever-changing world, building lasting relationships and fostering confidence in themselves for their future careers. Our lessons adhere to a Learning Philosophy founded on research relating to learning behaviours of young people; underpinned by a robust assessment strategy designed to support student achievement which in turn is tailored to the individual student needs following performance feedback and formal assessment. We actively encourage our students to view their school career as a continuation from year 7 to year 13 and do our very best to encourage and support their academic and sporting aspirations.

SAILING SKILLS The school is founded on the basis of duty, resilience, confidence and independence. For a century we have upheld and revered the tradition of seamanship and acknowledge its contribution to educating young men of strong fibre. Accordingly, bound in the ethos and expectations of our school’s unique nautical curriculum, are activities which develop these core characteristics in our pupils. Have you ever wondered who operates the Thames Barrier? Who steers a Thames clipper? Who opens Tower Bridge to let ships pass through? Via which path a young man becomes the First Sea Lord? In order to answer this, for one hundred years, one has had to look to former pupils of The London Nautical School. The curriculum is a practical and theoretical induction into seafaring. From Year 7 our pupils find themselves at the helm of a boat upon the open waters as part of our PE curriculum and delivered in weekly drop down sessions to maximise the pupil’s time on the water. They are all challenged to master sailing and kayaking as they steer their course through the intricacies of the estuary just as they navigate the theorem of Pythagoras or Spanish grammar. From Year 10 pupils can opt to further their Nautical Studies at The London Nautical School through a direct vocational pathway into an enormously diverse career. The maritime world remains an important part of British society as well as underpinning a globalised planet and its functioning. In steering the ship of their fates our pupils are also learning how to lead in a changing world.

A WORLD

OF OPPORTUNITIES Through our extensive enrichment program we offer a comprehensive range of clubs and activities that complement and extend the curriculum. We expect all our students to challenge themselves and engage in experiences beyond the classroom. Each subject area offers a specialised subject club where students can indulge their passion for the subject area and extend their knowledge and understanding. Our STEM scholars explore the many wonders that STEM can offer engaging in the more practical side of science and technology. Outside of our curriculum we also have our own Sea Cadet Unit, they meet every week and take part in many prestigious events across London representing the school and their unit. As well as offering clubs in school we also participate in Model UN and the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge every year, providing unrivalled opportunities for our students to develop their debating skills. Our location on the South Bank provides us with an abundance of world class performing arts organisations and city institutions on our doorstep. Our partners provide us with opportunities to develop our students’ Cultural Capital and provide lifelong experiences that enrich our student’s time at the school. We work with King’s College London, Rambert Dance Academy, The Young Vic Theatre, the BFI and the South Bank Centre to name a few.

PASTORAL CARE AT LONDON NAUTICAL

The London Nautical School is an inclusive school and we believe in everyone’s ability to succeed regardless of circumstance. For those requiring additional support, to aid this achievement, including pupils with special educational needs and those for whom English is an additional language, we have extensive support mechanisms. Since September 2015 we have also had a dedicated Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Unit. Boys from the ASD unit flourish in the school under our inclusive philosophy and regularly achieve well.

LNS SCHOLARS Our Scholars Programme is an extracurricular provision for our most talented students, offering opportunities for the development of enhanced academic knowledge and skills. Students who are part of The Scholars Programme are given the opportunity to undertake a Level 1 or Level 2 Project Qualification. This nationally recognised qualification allows students to undertake a research project on a subject of their choosing, write a substantial report and present their findings to an audience. The programme nurtures and inspires students to aim for the highest academic accolades. Open to all year groups if successful, students enjoy a range of extracurricular opportunities including trips and subject societies organised by their subject teachers; as well as membership of two additional clubs; Aspire Club and Brilliant Club. Aspire is a breakfast club programme delivering lecture style learning and academic discussion. Meeting weekly, our dedicated teachers deliver a lecture on one of their passions that is not covered in the National Curriculum. Current students have enjoyed lectures as diverse as The Presentation of Life and Death in Animation, The Future of Meat, Mathematics in The Ancient Islamic World, The History of Trade Unionism and Cutting-Edge Science: Turning Plastic Waste into Vanilla Foods. Scholars then debate the issues and if their interest is piqued, they are provided with further reading and research. The Brilliant Club is a nationally recognised initiative which gives students a taste of University study and life. The Programme starts with a visit to a University to meet current or past students to discuss the application process, university life and the range of courses offered at graduate level. Following this, students engage in a six-week programme of study delivered by a University PHD student. Topics such as; “cutting edge advancements in cancer immunology” or “analysis of the impact Windrush migration” are studied as students develop their academic writing. Students are then required to hand in an essay at the end of the programme which is graded against University criteria culminating with a graduation event at the University.
