Our academies span the length and breadth of the country, but we all follow the same set of underlying principles. Our hopes and aspirations for every one of our pupils is the same. By encouraging them to think big and believe that anything is possible, by showing them the importance of team spirit and by teaching them to carefully think through their decisions to do the right thing, we know that every one of our pupils can realise their full potential with us.

MENTAL HEALTH In 2017 we introduced a mental health first aid programme to train staff to understand and recognise the early warning signs of mental health problems. We have now trained over 1,400 members of staff in youth and adult mental health first aid, and we are well on the way to achieving our goal of training every member of E-ACT staff in mental health first aid.

HOW WE SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS TRANSITION

We are one of the few secondary academies in Oldham that offers a two day transition for every year 6 student. These transition days offer the opportunity for year 6 students to meet a wide range of staff and also their form tutors who will welcome them to TEAM TOAN in September. In addition to this we have a parent welcome evening so parents of year 6 students can see where the child will be carrying on their education for the next 5 years. For a year 6 parent it can be as nerve-racking as it is for the student transitioning into secondary education. We welcome parents and carers to ring or visit the academy as often as they like. Further to this, the year 7 team visit lots of primary schools throughout the year so all students have familiar friendly faces who can help them settle in. The transition journey does not start in year 6. We host open evenings for year 4 and 5 students and parents so that they are able to see the amazing opportunities TOAN provides for all students. These open evenings involved sports tournaments, art competitions and science experiments. This is so students can see all of the facilities we have at TOAN to support students learning.

“The Oldham Academy North continutes to be a good school.” OFSTED MARCH 2020

OUR CURRICULUM The Oldham Academy North believe that in order to allow our students to be successful they must achieve the best academic results possible. But learning is more than that. Our curriculum is designed around our core principles to ensure that our students can successfully experience a wide range of subjects throughout KS3 before making informed choices about their GCSE studies. At Key Stage 3, our curriculum is rigorous, challenging and engaging with regular opportunities to demonstrate their understanding and their mastery. We use a range of strategies to assess students’ understanding as we only assess with purpose. We believe that the learning and the progression through our curriculum is the most important part of a students’ journey. At The Oldham Academy North we ensure that our students value the importance of reading as it enhances understanding but also the importance of reading for pleasure. Students have a dedicated reading session each day in which they engage with a range of “class readers” and their own independent books. Reading for meaning is a key principle in how students access the curriculum in all subjects At GCSE all students will study a range of academic subjects to allow them to achieve the full EBacc as we believe there are no limitations to success. These include:

Our Co-Curricular offer gives pupils a fantastic opportunity to thrive socially, emotionally, and physically. Each subject offers a wide range of engaging clubs that promote the values of Personal Development. It is a statuary requirement for all KS3 students to attend a minimum of two clubs every week. Currently we have a choice of 42 separate clubs for all learners to attend across KS3 and KS4.

CPD Days

Our community pathway days take place three times throughout the academic year. Each day will have a specific theme and focus to ensure that our students are able to broaden their horizons and allow them to gain valid life experiences ensuring they leave TOAN ready to succeed. Themes of the CPD days can differ from curriculum and cultural capital, community and charity, careers, and health and wellbeing.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a scheme aimed at students in Y9 to give them the opportunity to learn essential life skills. The Duke of Edinburgh programme will instil vital attributes that enhance students' Personal Development in preparation for the real world. Here at TOAN, our pupils will improve their resilience, problem-solving, teamwork, communication, drive and dedication to enhance their CVs and College/University applications. Our current cohort consists of 138 eager pupils fully committed to completing the bronze award. To achieve this, pupils need to complete four separate activities to be award the bronze accreditation. The four categories are: Physical Activity, Volunteering, Skills, Expedition (2 days/1 night)

MANCHESTER UNITED FOUNDATION We work in collaboration with the Manchester United Foundation, which provides many opportunities for our students. The Foundation engages, inspires and unites our students by delivering educational programmes and opportunities to change lives for the better. This includes mentoring, leadership, rewards and opportunities to join football teams and compete against other HUB schools. Students even have the opportunity to free match tickets and the chance to meet payers and coaching staff.

CAREERS EDUCATION Our students have the autonomy to make informed decisions about their future; they are ambitious and resilient, allowing our students to leave us ready to contribute to a challenging and competitive world.

FURTHER EDUCATION, TRAINING OR EMPLOYMENT

National Careers Week Numerous careers activities take place across the school to celebrate national careers week. Students will be able to gain information from numerous employers and gain guidance and advice from various colleges during careers cafes and careers talks. National Careers Week takes place in March.

Year 11 DECIDE

Year 9 Options Choices Students will have the knowledge and understanding of many different types of career pathways and be able to make informed decisions about post 16 options. Furthermore, students will have developed employability skills and show knowledge on local and relevant LMI information. Experiences and opportunities will see a shift in student aspirations with the majority of our young people aiming high and looking to capitalise on the opportunities available to them.

WHAT WE OFFER: Support with college applications: Students are supported with applying for college by in-house careers advisors. We host form time and lunchtime application workshops with local Colleges and Sixth Forms to allow students specific support for their preferred destination. We allocate students meeting times during the school day to meet with the careers advisor to ensure that they get the necessary support.

Careers Talks and assemblies We use labour market information to provide targeted careers talks to inspire our students to pursue their dream career. Previous talks have been delivered by staff from First Choice Homes, RAF, Army, Medical Mavericks and Cambridge University.

As part of year 9 parents evening, parents are given the opportunity to listen to an options presentation from the deputy head teacher. They can then discuss with the teachers what the most appropriate option choices are for their child to pursue their chosen career. Students are supported throughout with booklets. We aim to provide impartial guidance to facilitate a successful study pathway for each and every student.

Employability Skills Students get the chance to participate in various activities throughout the academic year, including STEM challenges, employer visits and employability skills activities. The students then reflect on these experiences and the skills that they have learnt.

Accessing Higher Education Students are exposed to higher education throughout all the year groups (7-11). This is achieved through embedding higher education into the KS3 curriculum and during form time activities. In addition, our students are involved in several trips and guest speakers at a range of universities including Manchester Metropolitan University and Edge Hill University. Through our strong links with local sixth-form colleges and universities we believe all students should be able to aspire to access higher education.
