Mission

"At St Peter's we strive to be a joyful, active, Catholic community, belonging to and guided by our Lord Jesus Christ. We deliver a high quality, rounded education, focussing not only on individual academic excellence, but on each pupil's spiritual, moral, physical and emotional development. We are a forward looking school, continually seeking ways to build on our successes and further enhance the educational experience of our children. Inspired by the values of Catholic Social Teaching, we provide superb pastoral care for the entire school, particularly the most vulnerable amongst us and we actively promote justice, charity and care for our created world. As a community we aim to grow in communion with each other and with God. We aspire for every member of our school to become daily more like Jesus, filled with the grace and power of the Holy Spirit, allowing them to live life to the full, in hope and joy, transforming the world around them and bearing fruit that will last."

Catholic

Distinctiveness St Peter’s Catholic School is a community, inspired by the life of Jesus Christ. In aiming for excellence, our children learn and grow in a happy, secure and nurturing environment with Christ at its centre. We have high expectations and aspirations for everybody; with us aiming for individual excellence. Prayer is at the centre of school life. The spiritual development of our children comes through each individual’s journey of faith, along with developing a sense of stewardship for God’s creation and a spirit of social responsibility through the Gospel values. Many of our children come from backgrounds other than Catholic. We are committed to developing the whole child and all children are valued as unique and individual with precious gifts.

‘Parents enthuse about how inclusive the school is and value how it welcomes and celebrates children from all faiths and backgrounds.’ Ofsted

‘Staff and governors are fully committed to working together in their drive for improvement and their aim to provide an inspiring education based on Christ being at the centre of all they do.’ Section 48 Inspection

‘Pupils love coming to school, delight in their learning, and they achieve well. They told inspectors that it is easy to make friends here. Asked if there was anything that could make their school even better, one Year 6 pupil replied, “The only thing would be if the classrooms were bigger, then even more children could benefit from being here!” ’ Ofsted

Our Children At St Peter’s Catholic School, we value the uniqueness of all our children and are passionate about the development of the ‘whole child’. Our children come from a wide range of backgrounds. Although the school is Catholic there has always been a significant number of children on roll who practise other faiths or none. We welcome all children whose family want them to experience the caring ethos of the school. Our nurturing staff recognise and work hard to ensure each individual feels safe, secure and is able to aspire to be the best they can be.

‘Staff know each child as an individual, nurturing warm and trusting relationships so that they feel safe and secure.’ Ofsted We recognise that pupils learn at different rates and that there are many factors affecting achievement, including ability, emotional state, age and maturity. We believe all children can achieve and understand that children need to practise, embed and apply their knowledge, skills and understanding to secure learning. At St Peter's we provide a curriculum that is suitable for all pupils in the class. We have high expectations for all pupils and are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment.

The Learning

Environment Our school sits within nearly five acres of grounds, with large sports fields; a wooded area that is used for outdoor learning in addition to an orchard and other play areas. The school building provides a light, modern, well-equipped learning environment. It is arranged by year groups with classroom organisation following pedagogical good practice. All of our classrooms are equipped with modern technology and have immediate access to the outside environment which we use for learning whenever appropriate. In addition to our wellresourced classrooms, we have a number of additional breakout spaces that enable smaller group working. The children benefit from a well-stocked library and rich reading environment. St Stephen’s Church, part of the St Peter’s and Winchester Martyrs’ Parish, is attached to the school and enhances our opportunities for prayer and worship, along with being used for our school productions and music concerts. The school has its own kitchen that provides hot lunches each day which children eat in our spacious school hall.

Curriculum At St Peter’s we are committed to providing a high-quality education to all. The school is a place where children learn and grow in a happy, secure and nurturing environment with Christ at its centre. Through our broad and balanced curriculum, we strive for children to be: • excited by learning • collaborative learners • developing curiosity • learning respect for the world around them, for others and themselves. Rich learning opportunities both within the classroom and in the locality beyond it, ensure our curriculum focuses on developing the whole being. Children are thus prepared for their life ahead. Educational visits and expert visitors are key components to our planned curriculum.

‘Leaders have developed an ambitious curriculum for all pupils from early years through to Year 6.’ Ofsted

‘As they progress through the school, pupils respond to teachers’ high expectations and immerse themselves into all that the school offers. They are supported to gain confidence and become more independent learners, well prepared for their next stages of education.’ Ofsted

Achieving

Full Potential Achievement is about ensuring that all children achieve to their potential irrespective of their starting point. Progress of all children is rigorously monitored and day to day learning is adapted to meet the needs of the individual child. We take pride in being an inclusive school where we work hard to meet all the needs of all our children. On leaving, our children achieve well at national standards both in attainment and progress made.

‘Passionate and inspiring senior leadership underpins the shared ambition and high standards achieved.’ Ofsted

Personal

Development The development of an understanding of individual responsibility is a key part of our curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning in all lessons and for their actions at all times. Our behaviour code promotes responsibility for all for ensuring everyone is safe, is respected and can learn. This is further developed through the involvement of pupils in the running of the school. Our Student Council is comprised of elected representatives from each class. They serve the school community through a range of activities: organising fund raising events; campaigning and supporting projects to encourage the school community to look after our environment. We want our pupils to be socially aware and to have a voice.

‘Our student council is good because it gives the child’s perspective. Children can relate well to each other.’ Year 5 pupil

Music Music has a high profile throughout the school, being demonstrated not just by the high quality of music making in the classroom but also in the range of musical events and opportunities that children engage with throughout the school year. We offer extensive extra-curricular activities where children can deepen and extend their learning and gain valuable musical experiences beyond those in the classroom. We offer a wide range of instruments for our children to learn. These may include violin, cello, guitar, drums and piano. The children have many opportunities to perform, ranging from our annual school production, the Spring Concert to our choir supporting university graduation.

‘The teaching of music is a particular strength of the school, and a love of music is fostered across all years.’ Ofsted

Sport At St Peter’s, we encourage children to develop a lifelong love of physical activity and sports that will enable them to live healthy and active lifestyles and compete in events in the outside world. With large grounds and playgrounds, the children try many different sports, sometimes coached from external clubs or professional sports coaches. The school enters many local and county competitions, enjoying both success and the taking part as a team. We are proud to hold the Platinum Sports Award.

‘We could not have asked for a better primary school experience for our girls or a better foundation for them for the future. The team at St Peter’s have not only taught them to read and write, but to think and reason independently, work as a team, look after their friends and to aspire not to have more but to be more.’ Parent

Working with

Parents

As a Catholic school we recognise parents as the first educators of their child, and we aim to work alongside parents throughout their child’s time with us. We are very proud of the support that parents give the school through volunteering to hear readers regularly, accompanying us on our educational visits and joining us for class assemblies and school liturgies. Our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) greatly enriches life at St Peter’s with many community events and also raises money to enrich life for our children. A Breakfast Club, along with an After School Club are offered, providing parents with wrap around care as required. Please see website for current provision.
