*A Level reforms introduced by Government from 2015 include a ‘decoupling’ of AS and A2 levels. **As part of the Raising of the Participation Age legislation, the Government has an expectation that post 16 students who have not yet achieved a grade 4 at GCSE in either English and/or Maths should continue to study for these qualifications. As such Level 2 resit courses in English and Maths are available. All L3 courses are full time courses. You can choose a combination of qualifications from “traditionally academic” subjects and more vocational and applied courses.

Art & Design WHY CHOOSE ART AND DESIGN?

As the famous artist, Pablo Picasso once said ‘The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.’ This is so true. As creative students you will be meeting with a vast array of exciting challenges that are designed to expand your imagination. The course is designed to stretch your understanding of art through a series of design briefs which allow students to build on their strength but also take risks with the support and experience of the subject teachers, who are all practicing artists. Students have the opportunity to work with paint, sculpture, print, installation, conceptual, textiles, drawing and mix media. Through looking at the work of others and investigating art history, students are able to reflect and build on their own style.

The design briefs help students not only achieve an artistic outcome but also become better problem solvers by thinking outside the box. Art also helps students have a better self-awareness through the requirement to develop from their own experience and an ability to express themselves. The qualities are skills for life.

The department offers a range of additional opportunities such as arts weekends, open access and life drawing classes. These opportunities are optional but incredibly popular with our Sixth Form in preparation for creating an extensive portfolio of work that showcases their many talents. WHERE CAN IT LEAD?

Taking Art & Design A Level can lead to further education and careers in Art, Graphics, Textiles, Web Design, Advertisement, Illustration or Print.

Biology WHY CHOOSE BIOLOGY?

Studying biology will enable you to appreciate the complexity of the living world ranging from whole ecosystems right down to the molecules that form life itself. It is an intellectually demanding, yet, rewarding subject. In the first year of the course we will begin by studying the fundamentals of biology. This will take us through the complex molecules that living organisms use to form the structures within their cells. We will look in detail at the cell and how it is organised to carry out the processes for life. Following on from this we will study the heart and lungs through the use of dissection to learn how substances enter and are moved around the body. Studying evolution, evolutionary relationships and biodiversity will impress on you the importance of bringing all that you have learned over the year together to see biology as a far-reaching yet interconnected subject. There is a strong practical basis to the course which includes a residential field trip to study ecology during the summer term where much of what you have learned in the classroom can be put into a real life context.

WHERE CAN IT LEAD?

Biology is an important subject for many science based courses and careers. The range of professions the course can lead to includes those linked to medicine, healthcare and plants or animals. Specific careers could include Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology, Research, Zoology, Psychology, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Botany and Environmental Science.

The second year of the course builds on your studies from year one. You will be expected to apply what you already know to a range of fascinating areas such as the process by which organisms make high energy molecules in photosynthesis and how that energy is released to perform vital functions in respiration. You will study genetic inheritance, the control of gene expression and also consider the ethical implications of genetic engineering, amongst other technologies, that will have far reaching effects for ourselves and future generations. Business: BTEC WHY CHOOSE BUSINESS BTEC?

Business

WHY CHOOSE BUSINESS?

Business is a subject that is ever changing and updating to meet the dynamic needs of modern enterprise. In business we examine management, marketing, human resources, accounting and finance, international business and market economics. By developing an understanding of and applying concepts to “real world businesses”, students develop many skills that will be useful throughout their lives. A Business A Level looks at managing people and is a skill needed by many people when they leave education.

We learn through a range of tasks, projects, presentations and group discussion. A keen interest in current business affairs is a must. This range of learning methods supports the exam requirements to be able to work with case studies and use research given industries in advance. This will also help build skills and develop independent learning skills for subsequent employment or higher education. FIND OUT MORE:

A BTEC in business is a different way of learning about the varied and fast moving business world. It is a practical course with assignments about real business, enabling you to gain a wide understanding of the purpose of different businesses, their structure and how the need to innovate to succeed. You will get a chance to gain skills relating to, and an understanding of, how a marketing campaign is developed and design this campaign for assessment. The BTEC is a practical course and although there is some exam content this is a great course for those who prefer to be assessed over a longer time period and are prepared to work hard. WHERE CAN BUSINESS LEAD?

Students who study business could go on to further study or into roles in a myriad different sectors, and not all of them are those you would typically associate with business in general. Business leads into higher education or work and will equip you with all the skills needed to succeed in both. Most university courses use a similar mix of assessment methods and Business students would be well equipped to tackle coursework, group work and exams. FIND OUT MORE:

Chemistry WHY CHOOSE CHEMISTRY?

Chemists get to ask some great questions, from “If I set this on fire what will happen?”, “How can I stop this disease killing people?”, “If I combine these elements together in the right way can I create something totally new?” to “Can I make this medicine taste like bubble gum?” It’s all part of the job. Chemists conduct experiments to study how elements work in different conditions, test how they mix, and work out what they are made up of right down to the tiniest particle. The results can be ground-breaking, colourful, explosive, or almost impossible to see. Chemists use their experiments and knowledge to develop medicines, foods, fabrics and other materials, from neon lights to shatterproof glass.

They also use it to understand the world around us, from why leaves change colour to discovering invisible pollutants in the air. Pick up a can of soft drink and you’ll find chemistry everywhere, from the metal can you’re holding, to the paint used to cover it and the liquid inside. Just breathe in and out and you’re performing a chemical reaction, which is a little scary, but pretty great too… WHERE CAN IT LEAD?

Chemistry is sometimes known as the ‘central science’ because it helps to connect physical sciences, like Mathematics and physics, with applied sciences, like biology, medicine and engineering. The careers chemistry can lead you to are diverse including: Chemical Engineer, Healthcare, Forensic Science, Research Science, Chartered Certified Accountant, Teacher or Science Writer. Computer Science WHY CHOOSE COMPUTER SCIENCE?

How many times have you thought: “Why did the computer do that?” or “How does that actually work?” Computer Science is designed to help answer these questions. You will learn about the logic of software, the fundamentals of how the computer processes data and the functions of what is actually happening in the background. Computer Science is an exciting and challenging subject which is strongly focused on computing fundamentals, software development and problem solving. You will learn how to analyse problems, design algorithms and write applications. These skills will build a solid foundation on which you can develop applications for the future. We only have to look back 10 years and if you had spoken to an A Level student embarking on a computer science course they might not have believed that now we would be permanently connected to the Internet on smartphones, streaming our favourite music to our phones from a database of millions of tracks stored in the ‘cloud’ or carrying around a tablet PC with more processing power than the flight computer on the first space shuttles. The challenge for you as a computer scientist is to be able to respond to this ever changing world and to develop the knowledge and the skills that will help you to understand technology that hasn’t yet been invented. WHERE CAN IT LEAD?

Doing Computer Science can lead you to a range of different courses and careers in mathematics, science, engineering and IT. If you have a logical mind, an urge to solve problems and an affinity for writing computer code then Computer Science is for you. FIND OUT MORE:

Dance

WHY CHOOSE DANCE?

Our students choose AS Dance because they have a passion for dance or performing, and most commonly as a progression from GCSE Dance although this is not a pre-requisite. The course is challenging, both academically and physically and will demand resilience and perseverance from all students. There is a large emphasis on practical work across a range of dance styles, and improving your own fitness and skills as a performer. We promote a culture of students taking a responsibility for their own exercise programmes, managing rehearsals and evaluating progress against their own goals. You will learn about effective and safe dance training and apply this to your own work both in and out of lessons. Our students develop a sense of individuality and creativity throughout the course as their choreographic work should be a personal response to the stimulus set by the exam board. We encourage leadership and teaching at Dance Clubs to inspire confidence among our sixth form and practise managing dancers ahead of creating their own choreographies. Performance opportunities are created throughout the course and an essential part of developing confidence and experience. Students study the repertoire of many professional choreographers which further informs their own dance practice. We explore a range of dance techniques practically and critically analyse different styles in order to understand the development of dance over time. Design and Technology Product Design

WHY CHOOSE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY?

Good design is vital to our world and economy - all modern designers have to consider sustainable issues when designing new products. A sign of the modern technological age in which we live is that human actions have had a negative impact on our environment, and new products should not add to the existing problems of extraction and use of natural resources, pollution from manufacturing and disposal of large amounts of waste products. It is important, that we enthuse future designers with a passion for designing their futures. Students will explore ideas of originality and value, to question and challenge, to envisage what could be, as well as to achieve results that will progress their careers; they will develop knowledge, understanding, skills and application for designing products. Product design encompasses a wide range of design disciplines but is firmly rooted in the skills required to design and make high quality products. Products that are fit for purpose, satisfy wants and needs, enhance our day-today lives and, most importantly, give students the opportunity to demonstrate their design and technology capability. There are five pathways within the qualifications offered at Stratton — Resistant Materials, Graphic Products, Textiles, Food, and Systems and Control. Each pathway has its own specific content. Every strand emphasises the key factors of creativity and sustainability.

The qualification structure allows students to develop a range of skills and outcomes at Advanced Subsidiary (AS) which demonstrate their creativity and apply these to a design and make project at A2.

A typical student will have a keen interest in design and technology. They will need to possess good graphic and practical skills and enthusiasm for design. They should be able to work independently and with others demonstrating good organisational skills and time management. Students should be creative and should be able to use their own initiative. WHY CHOOSE PHILOSOPHY?

Philosophy literally means ‘a love of wisdom’. The study of philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality and existence. The Philosophy A Level will introduce you to some of the world’s greatest thinkers, starting with Plato and ending with Nietzsche, taking in Descartes and Hume along the way.

Bertrand Russell, arguably one of this century’s finest philosophers said “The man who has no tincture of philosophy goes through life imprisoned in the prejudices derived from common sense.” It is a common theme that runs through philosophy to question what appear to be obvious, common sense answers. In doing so other sciences were born, when philosophers started to question the way people gained knowledge, it became psychology and when they started to question the magnificence and beauty of the stars, it became astronomy. WHERE CAN IT LEAD?

“My ambition was always to study Sport Science at university and this has only been strengthened through my A Level study. The staff are really supportive and the links between sports, biology and society are fascinating.”

Philosophy requires you to have an open and questioning mind and it will help you to develop it further. It encourages critical analysis of text and arguments. It provides you with a working understanding of the fundamental nature of argument. It can help to prepare you for the further study of Philosophy or the extremely popular degree course PPE. Philosophy compliments both Arts and Science subjects at degree level both in content and in transferable skills.

Enrichment

We believe that the Sixth Form experience should develop personal excellence alongside academic excellence. We also promote social responsibility, inspiring our students to play an active part in the community both in school and out in the wider community. Our house system encourages comradery and healthy competition and our trips and community projects ensure that our students feel that they are part of something more.

Extended Project Qualification Alongside their A Level courses every student will work on an advanced level project entirely of their own devising. From staging a charity event to designing a futuristic house, from researching ground-breaking medical therapies to writing a children’s book, to recreating the Aurora Borealis in the science laboratory, the Extended Project presents a fantastic opportunity both to develop and follow your interests and to direct your own study. This is a qualification that prepares you well for both higher education and employment. Just as importantly, it allows you to carve out entirely your own pathway and really follow your own interests. Best of all, in recognition of the skills required to complete a successful EPQ project, the qualification is weighted at 50% of an A Level compared to an AS Level at 40%. It is also well regarded by universities and employers as evidence that the transition from Sixth Form to university or employment will be a smooth one for students who have successfully demonstrated their aptitude for independent learning and self-management. WHERE CAN IT LEAD?

The EPQ allows you to demonstrate skills and independent learning valued by universities and employers.
