ery dear friends,

This year’s Annual Report on Philanthropy has a depth and intensity to it that no other in recent history shares! At its center rests the dedication and celebration of the Arts Center, a project so long anticipated, so struggled for, so celebrated, so beautiful. In the eighteen years since the blessing of the Student Activities Center, it has been our on-going desire to offer a new, modern facility to enhance the arts on the Hill. It is difficult to adequately express our gratitude to each of you who have been a part of our Vision for Veritas campaign — thanks to you, that dream has become a reality! And not only the Arts Center, but your generosity in setting a new record for the Flintridge Fund, your participation in the Harry G. Johansing Golf Tournament and the 85th Anniversary Gala, and your presence and support of a newly-shaped Alumnae Reunion Weekend are remarkable. There is on-going energy and excitement in every aspect of life on the Hill and there you all are, with us on the journey.

As I reflect on this year, I am more deeply aware that the greatest gift we have received these past 12 months is the gift of each of you — you who make up our beautiful Flintridge Sacred Heart community. Your supportive presence, your engagement, your generosity, your participation in all the different aspects of FSHA life are priceless assets you offer us. Truly, you are that “small pool/ that the more I drink/ from, the more overflows/ me with sourceless light.” Your commitment draws a two-fold return on investment at FSHA. May you experience the joy of deep satisfaction in supporting such a dynamic educational effort on the Hill and may the daily prayer and thoughts of your Dominican Sisters be a source of spiritual support and encouragement for each of you. With our young women, you are at the heart of our mission. We give you very grateful thanks for your generosity to us.

Sister Carolyn McCormack, O.P. President

THE BOARD CHAIR BOB MALCHIONE

T

his letter marks my first opportunity to address the entire Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy community as Chair of the Board of Directors. The 2015-16 academic year was marked with milestone after milestone: FSHA celebrated its 85th anniversary, the new Arts Center opened and we completed our latest strategic plan. At every turn, I was overwhelmed by the generosity of those who made these milestones possible, and I am grateful for this opportunity to say thank you. In the pages that follow, you will see the names of our generous donors, dedicated board members, gracious volunteers, and talented teachers and administrators. Behind every name is a commitment to this amazing institution that for 85 years has educated young women for a life of faith, integrity and truth. Behind every name is a passion for education and for helping others. Behind every name is a vision for what could be and the willingness to make that vision a reality. I would also like to salute the names not listed. FSHA has graduated over 4,000 alumnae. We have 392 current students and families. Our community includes parents of alumnae, grandparents, and countless friends and supporters. Every person who has contributed to FSHA – in the stands, at the Golf Tournament, in La Cañada and beyond – is an important part of our success. Know that your contributions are appreciated and make a difference. The leadership of the Dominican Sisters is ever steady. Thank you to Sr. Carolyn McCormack, O.P. for her wisdom and perseverance in her role as

04

president. She has led us on a “hero’s journey” that culminated with the grand opening of the Arts Center. She and Principal Sr. Celeste Marie Botello, O.P. ensure that today’s Tologs receive an education that prepares them for an ever-changing world. I am also proud to serve alongside my fellow board members who give generously of their time. I especially would like to thank Bob Harper, who served as Board Chair before me, for his guidance. Thank you to the other departing Board members Sr. Gloria Marie Jones, O.P., Michael Davitt, Leslie Kawai ’80 and Steve Mann for their years of involvement. The future is bright for FSHA, and I invite you to join me, my fellow Board members, the Dominican Sisters and faculty, staff and students in shaping that future.

SR. GLORIA MARIE JONES, O.P.

WITH GRATEFUL

HEARTS… We would like to thank the following members for their dedication to the Board of Directors.

06

“As our Congregational Prioress these past eleven years, Sr. Gloria Marie has strengthened and supported all our Congregation’s sponsored schools. Her presence on our Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy Board of Directors has been a blessing and a gift to all of us. We send grateful thanks to Sr. Gloria and best wishes for a beautiful sabbatical year.”

— Sr. Carolyn McCormack, O.P.

BOB HARPER (Kathleen ’08) Bob Harper’s leadership has been invaluable to our entire Flintridge Sacred Heart community. Bob guided the implementation of the first strategic plan, led the construction of the new Arts Center and helped negotiate the Master Plan with the City of La Cañada Flintridge. He is a remarkable leader.

“I thank Bob Harper for his seven years of service to FSHA. Bob provided thoughtful and steady leadership in many roles across his tenure. As Board Chair, Bob was instrumental in transforming the role of the Board and its interaction with the school.” — Bob Malchione, Board Chair

STEVEN MANN (Carly ’12)

MICHAEL DAVITT (Abby ’12)

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s strong financial position is due in part to the business expertise of Board member Steve Mann. As chair of the finance committee, Steve developed a keen investment strategy that proved invaluable to FSHA. His faithful, steady and consistent presence on the Board was appreciated by all members.

As mayor and city council member for La Cañada Flintridge, Michael Davitt was one of the fiercest advocates within the community for Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. His diplomacy with our neighbors ensured that FSHA’s campus modernization plan moved forward.

“We are grateful that Steve has chosen to remain on our finance committee. His wisdom and financial acumen are such a positive gift to FSHA.”

“Michael Davitt’s presence on our Board always brought a wider vision to all our issues. Through his role on the City Council of La Cañada Flintridge, he offered wise advice and wonderful humor. I know Mike’s dad, former Board member John Davitt, blessed his work with us. Mike will always be our miracle worker at FSHA.”

— Sr. Carolyn McCormack, O.P.

LESLIE KAWAI ’80 (Tara ’13) As an alumna and a parent, Leslie Kawai ’80 brought two unique perspectives to the Board of Directors. A dancer (and former FSHA arts student), Leslie was integral to helping the Board understand the importance of the performing arts in the Master Plan. Her legacy is the excellence of the current dance program and the new Arts Center. We are proud of our former Rose Queen!

“Leslie’s personal connection to the FSHA dance program was vital to the Board during the planning process for our new fine Arts Center. She and her daughter Tara are outstanding examples of women educated on the Hill.” — Barbara Marshall, Board Member

SR. JANE RUDOLPH, O.P. Sr. Jane Rudolph, O.P. knows a thing or two about olive oil. In 1999, she was tasked with resurrecting the annual harvest of the historic olive trees at the Motherhouse in Fremont. She dove into the project and almost two decades later, the harvest is a hit with the community and the olive oil produced from the crop sells out every year. “Harvesting the olive trees annually is a highlight for the Sisters and the many people in Fremont, as God’s bounty, creation and community are so vividly experienced,” Sr. Jane explained. A staple at the much sought after olive oil tasting and heritage dinner (auctioned off every year at Gala), Sr. Jane has entertained many with her tales of the Dominican Sisters and their olive oil adventures. As for her work on the Board of Directors, Sr. Jane is excited to be part of this dynamic group. “I bring a Dominican on fire with love for her God, love for life, committed to service and overflowing with gratitude to God for all,” she said. “I am happy to return to the Hill to experience the vibrancy here, where leadership, community and service are lived and shared with the world.”

WILLIAM CHEUNG

We welcome four new members to the Board of Directors for the 2016-17 school year.

08

For William Cheung, the boarding program makes Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy a very special place. “With its diverse international student body, the boarding program presents a unique challenge and, at the same time, a wonderful opportunity to showcase the strength of the school’s educational philosophy,” he said. “The program is an integral part to realize FSHA’s diversity vision, to promote and practice the principles of diversity and inclusiveness at the school. The boarding students also broaden the horizon of FSHA’s learning community and contribute to its vibrant student life.” In fact, the boarding program was how William first learned about FSHA—a family friend was a boarding student at the school. When he was asked to join the Board of Directors, William gladly accepted. “I believe in the importance of education and serving the community.” As the Marketing Director at Pacific Quality Packaging Corporation, William brings corporate management experience, especially in the areas of team building and marketing strategies. He also has independent school experience as well. William was a member of the Long Range Planning Committee (the Strategic Planning Committee), the Diversity Committee and lastly, as a member of the Board of Trustees, for Sequoyah School in Pasadena. “With my life-long commitment to education, together with my personal background and experiences, I can bring a unique, fresh perspective about FSHA to the Board.”

DENNIS MAGUIRE (Emily ’07, Katie ’09, Ann ’12, Maggie ’18) A spot on the Board of Directors was a natural fit for Dennis Maguire. After all, he is the father of four Tologs—Emily ’07, Katie ’09, Ann ’12 and Maggie ’18—and has spent a lot of time on the Hill over the years. “I decided to join the Board because I want to help further the mission and I thought I would have something to offer,” he explained. “I also want to give back to the institution that has given our family so much.” Dennis is President of Worldwide Home Media Distribution at Paramount Pictures and is responsible for the global sales, marketing and distribution of DVD, digital, VOD and TV licensing of studio content on all platforms. It might sound complicated, but the gig definitely has its perks. “The coolest part of my job is the ability to watch movies and calling that work,” he said. On a more serious note, Dennis brings valuable leadership experience to the Board. “I have a personal management style that combines energy with diplomacy and poise,” he said. “I have built a reputation as a strong leader and believe my open, no-nonsense, strategy-based approach would be appreciated and useful as a member of the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy Board of Directors.”

LIA CARTER (Alyssa ’16) Lia Carter first heard about Flintridge Sacred Heart from her neighbors; each of their three daughters attended the school. But it was a visit to campus that sealed the deal for Lia’s daughter, Alyssa ’16. “My daughter told me that she felt a sense of peace every time she stepped foot on the campus. I knew she needed to listen to what God was telling her,” Lia said. Alyssa ’16 thrived at FSHA and was Salutatorian of her class. Along the way, Lia also became involved with life on the Hill and ended up serving on the Parents’ Guild Executive Board for four years. When Lia was asked to join the Board of Directors, she knew what her answer would be right away. “Who can say no to Sr. Carolyn? But, seriously, I love FSHA, its mission to its students and its support of the students’ families,” Lia explained. “I recognize the importance of staying true to an organization’s mission and purpose.” Lia’s leadership on a number of volunteer organizations and committees isn’t the only experience she brings to the Board. As a Superior Court Judge for Los Angeles, Lia has had to make a lot of tough decisions. “I am a great listener,” she said. “I can bring order to chaos and I have a very calm demeanor.” And it’s Lia’s love of FSHA that will guide her work on the Board. “I am honored that the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose have entrusted me to help carry out the mission of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.”

O

ur alumnae are extremely generous. To celebrate their commitment to Flintridge Sacred Heart, we introduced two new alumnae giving groups last year. We hope you will join us!

THE 1931 ALUMNAE LEADERSHIP CIRCLE

The 1931 Alumnae Leadership Circle recognizes the generous support of our alumnae donors who give $1,931 or more to the Flintridge Fund. Members receive special recognition throughout the year and are invited to a private dinner in appreciation of their generosity. FSHA is truly grateful for the extraordinary generosity of our alumnae, who set the tone for giving among our community and help ensure a bright future for today’s Tologs. Our 1931 introductory members are graduates from the last nine years who have contributed $19.31 or more to the Flintridge Fund.

THE BRIDGE SOCIETY The Bridge Society celebrates our most loyal alumnae who consistently support the Flintridge Fund year after year. Alumnae who make a gift of any amount to the Flintridge Fund for five consecutive years are recognized as members of the Bridge Society. For this consistent show of support, members of the Society are recognized with an elegant bracelet with special charms given at the 5-, 10-, 15-, 20-, 25- and 30-year milestones. A lifetime of giving by alumnae is a vote of confidence in what FSHA has been, what it is today and what it will become.

EMPLOYEE GIVING One hundred. That’s the percentage of faculty and staff who gave to the Flintridge Fund this year. But what does that really mean? It’s a commitment from our dedicated employees to the students, community and mission of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. It’s a vote of confidence in life here on the Hill. And it wasn’t just this year; 2015-16 marks the 11th year of 100 percent participation by faculty and staff. Pretty impressive. E

ndowment funds offer permanent financial support to FSHA because of the income generated through careful investment management. Endowment funds are essential to the long-term fiscal health of the school because they serve the school in perpetuity.

Endowment funds at FSHA: • Benefit future generations. • Leave a lasting legacy that is forever linked with FSHA. • Can be designated for a specific purpose, program or scholarship. • Are professionally managed. We are grateful to these donors who have made contributions to FSHA’s endowment funds in the 2015-16 fiscal year.

The Mother Dolorosa Society Mother Dolorosa was one of the three founding Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose who started Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in 1931. Her leadership helped FSHA grow in ways no one could have imagined when she and her fellow Sisters traveled up the Hill with “a statue of the Blessed Virgin, a $5 bill and their faith.” We are honored to name our planned giving society after her. The Mother Dolorosa Society celebrates the alumnae, parents, grandparents and friends who have remembered FSHA in their estate plans. Like Mother Dolorosa, the society members have made a lasting contribution to the mission of FSHA and generations of young women. Membership is permanent and continues on a yearly basis as long as the gift remains in effect. Society members are recognized in FSHA’s Annual Report on Philanthropy and are invited to events periodically. The names of deceased members remain in perpetuity among those listed. All FORE the Girls O n Monday, October 12, 2015, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy held its annual Harry G. Johansing Scholarship Golf Tournament and Dinner at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. The event raises money for tuition assistance at FSHA. With 144 golfers on the green, the event was a sold out success. Before tee off, players had the chance to qualify for the $10,000 putting contest. Games continued along the course where players had the opportunity to hit a hole-in-one for a 2015 Toyota Prius donated by Mike Smith and Bob Smith Toyota Scion. After a long day of golf, players joined their family, friends and other FSHA community members for a cocktail hour and dinner. During cocktail hour, Oakmont member Maurice Claff putted for the $10,000 prize. Four Dominican Sisters also participated in the “Bet on the Sisters” putting competition with Sr. Donna Marie Nicholas, O.P. snagging the win.

46

One of the beneficiaries of the tuition assistance, Olivia Matthews ’16, was on hand to share her experience as a Johansing Scholar. “For me, attending Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has meant one thing: opportunity. The opportunity to discover strengths and talents and interests I didn’t know I had,” said Matthews. “The opportunity to grow spiritually, intellectually and emotionally ... Flintridge Sacred Heart has been a vehicle to the discovery of myself and all that I can achieve.” The night ended on a bittersweet note with the farewell of Special Events Manager Charlotte Saydah. Charlotte served as the Special Events Manager for the past six years. Though she was sad to be leaving FSHA, Charlotte couldn’t be happier about the outcome of the event. “We raised more money for tuition assistance than ever before,” said Charlotte. “It’s inspiring that our efforts help make a Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy education possible for so many students.”

GALA CELEBRATES 85 YEARS

ow do you celebrate 85 years? For Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, a glitzy night at the Langham in Pasadena was the perfect way to honor its long history. The festivities brought together alumnae, current and past families, friends, faculty, staff and Dominican Sisters. “Tonight, we honor the people and events that shaped FSHA’s first 85 years, and we look to the future with great excitement,” said President Sr. Carolyn McCormack, O.P. at the opening of the dinner. The evening included a silent and live auction, a paddle raise, a jewelry raffle, a $5,000 cash raffle and dancing. The celebration extended beyond the birthday of the school. It also happened to be alumnae parent Gloria Vessadini’s 85th birthday. The entire room sang “Happy Birthday” to her. Later, at the live auction, a three-layered deep chocolate cake was auctioned and sent to Gloria’s table. And even more cheering erupted when former Assistant Principal Katy Sadler won the jewelry raffle — a vintage inspired diamond heart necklace donated by Laura and Armik Agakanian. And even though Gala was celebrating FSHA’s past, the event also honored the future of the school. “The grand opening of the Arts Center is only the beginning of our commitment to the next generation of students, faculty, alumnae, families and supporters,” said Sr. Carolyn.

50

All monies raised from the event went toward the completion of the new Arts Center on campus. Vintage FSHA photos adorned the tables at Gala.

WAYS TO GIVE

P

hilanthropy — your gifts — is what turns a good school into a great school! Your gifts enrich our students’ experience far beyond our exceptional academic program, which is mostly tuitiondependent. At Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, we are grateful that our community not only believes in a culture of philanthropy, but also actively supports this culture. FSHA’s continued excellence depends on regular support from generous members of the community — current and past parents as well as alumnae and friends of the school. Each gift, no matter its amount, makes a vital impact on FSHA. There are several ways to make a tax-deductible donation to the school.

56

CASH, CHECK OR CREDIT CARDS Your cash gift is tax deductible within the guidelines established by the IRS. Cash gifts can be made by check or be charged to your Visa, MasterCard or American Express. You may also instruct the Advancement Office to charge your credit card on a monthly or quarterly basis.

STOCK GIFTS Contributions of appreciated stocks or other capital assets that have increased in value can result in significant tax savings. The current full value of the gift can generally be deducted on federal and state income tax, and the capital gains tax on the amount of appreciation is avoided.

PLANNED GIVING MATCHING GIFTS Your gift could be matched dollar for dollar. Many companies offer matching gift programs that will double or even triple a donation’s value. Some companies match gifts by spouses and/or retirees. If you have questions about your company’s matching gift program, please contact your personnel office.

Members of the Mother Dolorosa Society are a special group of generous alumnae, parents and friends who have chosen to remember Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in their estate plans. Wills, charitable trusts, bequests and life insurance policies offer the opportunity for a lasting legacy to benefit the future of FSHA.

For more information on any of these ways to give, please contact the Advancement Office at 626-685-8400.
