Preface

2015 has been an exciting year for us. We embarked on a journey to convene the global Life Cycle Community behind one key idea: That communication and collaboration among and beyond the life cycle community is key to accelerate the application of life cycle information. Over the past few months, we ourselves have learned a lot about communication, and how to get better at it. We have also learned that our idea is shared by many of you and that there are huge opportunities ahead, given the global push for sustainability through the Paris Agreement or the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals. As this report shows, 2015 has been all about establishing the FSLCI and informing the Life Cycle Community about us. Beyond developing our web presence, we have presented the FSLCI at various conferences around the world. We have have also started to engage with a number of relevant organisations and stakeholders and signed strategic partnerships with many national Life Cycle networks. 2016 will be less about us and more about actually realizing our mission and vision. This will of course only be possible with the support of our members and the Life Cycle Community. As such we look forward to continuing our journey with you to promote Life Cycle Thinking globally! Jim, Guido & Philip

Conferences & Workshops

LCM 2015 30.08. – 02.09. Bordeaux, France

Our participation at the LCM 2015 was a great success for the FSLCI. During the three-day long conference we organized a panel discussion around the need to enhance communication around life cycle thinking, which was very well received. We were also present with a booth, which gave us the opportunity to not only meet our members for the first time in person, but also served well to inform the wider Life Cycle Community about us. Beyond being present at the LCM, we also helped organize the International Summer School on “Life Cycle Approaches to Sustainable Regional Development ”, which took place in Bordeaux from the 28th – 30th of August, right before the LCM started.

ILCM 2015 14. – 15.09. New Delhi, India

Following our present at the LCM in Bordeaux, we joined a number of our members who also participated at the Indian Life Cycle Management Conference (ILCM) in New Delhi, India. The ILCM was established in 2011 and has been organized every year by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). The FSLCI was again highly visible during the conference, thanks to the ILCM’s organizer Ms Sanjeevan Bajaj, who had served as our interim President of the Board of Directors in 2015. Much like in Bordeaux, we were also present with our booth. In addition, our CFOO Philip Strothmann gave a presentation on “Collaboration and Communication as Essential Tools for Mainstreaming Life Cycle Thinking ”.

LCA XV 06. – 08.10. Vancouver, Canada

The LCA XV conference, which was organized by the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA) started with a great panel discussion that focussed on the aspects of building the global community and putting a higher emphasis on communication. It was moderated by the Chair of our Board of Directors, Martina Prox, and provided a number of interesting insights and ideas. In addition to our well-visited booth, we organized an info-session on Wednesday morning. Despite the early hour, around 25 conference participants showed up before the conference started to learn more about and engage with us on the FSLCI. We were also able to welcome a number of new members to the FSLCI.

ALCAS Conference Series 23. – 27.11. Melbourne, Australia

The last conference in 2015 brought us to Melbourne, Australia. The Australian Life Cycle Assessment Society (ALCAS) organized a full week of conferences around life cycle topics. After the first two days which focussed on LCA in the food sector, Wednesday was all about Life Cycle Management. Here, our Board Member Jodie Bricout gave a presentation on the link between LCA and Circular Economy, while our CFOO Philip Strothmann gave a keynote on the FSLCI and a presentation on the need to enhance communication and collaboration. We were also present with our booth. As noted by Jodie: “The FSLCI was omnipresent”. As a result, we were able to welcome a eight new members and a potential project partner.

FSLCI Inaugural Forum 03.09.2015 Bordeaux, France

Right after the LCM Conference in Bordeaux we organized our first own event. The event was open to everyone interested and brought together some 40 participants for two workshops. One discussed „The role of LC approaches in management decisionmaking“ and was chaired by Rodney Irwin from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The other one led by Jim Fava and Ana Quiros focussed on communication and collaboration and discussed among other things a set of ‘Key Principles for Promoting Life Cycle Approaches’, which had been developed by a number of FSLCI members. A first draft version of the Principles is now available online in an effort to start a debate about them not only among our members, but within the larger Life Cycle Community. If you would like to provide feedback on the principles draft, please feel free to engage with us online!

Outlook

2015 was all about establishing the FSLCI and informing the Life Cycle Community about us. For 2016 we look forward to consolidating and growing our membership and building new partnerships. But we also plan to start implementing a number of project ideas that would enable us to promote life cycle thinking globally in more concrete terms with a wide range of relevant stakeholders. While our Board of Directors approved these project ideas, our ability to secure funding for their implementation will also determine our ability to implement them. As such we will focus our attention over the first few months of the year on securing financial support from organizations around the world that are ready to support us on focusing on four concrete areas: Communication, Information, Community and Education. In addition to these core projects, which will be primarily driven by our Executive Committee, we have also recently launched a call for member-driven projects. If you have a project idea that you would like to implement under the umbrella of the FSLCI, pitch it in the Project Pitch Forum in our members’ space! In going forward we hope that you will continue to support our journey with us and look forward to working with you on promoting life cycle thinking and the use of life cycle information globally. Jim, Guido & Philip
