1969 - The first Penneys store opened in Mary Street, Dublin 1971 - The first large store outside Dublin was opened in Cork 1971 - 11 more stores open in Ireland and one in Northern Ireland 1973 - The number of stores had reached 18 in Ireland and Primark began trading in Great Britain with four out-of-town stores. 1984 - The first multiple acquisition took place with the purchase in Ireland of five Woolworth stores 1992 - A flagship store was purchased in 1995 – Development of the UK business with the addition of 16 stores 2001 – 2005 continued UK and Ireland expansion 2006 – Expansion into Spain 2008 - Expansion into Netherlands, Portugal, Germany and Belgium

As of June 2010, Primark/ Penneys had 177 outlets in the UK and Ireland, 139 of them in the UK (including 8 in Ulster) and the remainder in the Republic of Ireland. The company continues to trade under the Penneys fascia in Republic of Ireland and also trades in Holland and Spain. As with Penneys, Primark is positioned in the Lower Middle/Value sector of the general merchandising market, with its main focus on Family Safe fashion. Primark targets young, fashion-conscious under 35s, providing fashion basics at value for money prices. Primark is a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative. Primark is a private limited company whose holding company is Associated British Foods plc. According to its own publicity, Primark is the 2nd largest clothing retailer in the UK overall in volume terms and leads the highly competitive and still expanding - value clothing segment.
