Retailer Births & Deaths
There were 0 administrations in October. There were 15 new additions to the FSP Retailer Database in October, with 3 new retailers proposing to enter the UK market:Cardmarket, a value orientated standalone greetings card format being trialled by WH Smith; Nixon, having opened its second European location in London's Carnaby; and Update 1, a low carb bistro deli planning UK expansion following the opening of its first outlet on Walthamstow High Street.
Retail Burn This month, as usual, the big national chains attract the most press. The most talked about retailers, according to the Retail Burn, include: Argos, Paperchase, Clarks, Booths Supermarkets, Holland & Barrett, G-Star, Homebase, Internacionale, Bijou Brigitte and Tesco plc. The retailer with the highest number of positive news articles in October was Argos, having increased half-year sales by 2.9% as it made good progress with its transformation plan. Tesco plc is at the other end of the scale, with the Serious Fraud Office having now launched a formal criminal probe following the discovery of a ÂŁ263m hole in its profit expectations.
Hot 100 The Hot 100 in October 2014 included; Appointed new chief operating officer to oversee expansion plans, B&M Acquired the intellectual property of Internaรงionale, Edinburgh Woollen Mill Increasing its sales and on the hunt for more stores, Pets at Home Eyeing further stores in South America following its US success, Ted Baker Increasing its sales and profits, Sunglass Hut Opening new stores in Maidstone and Sutton Coldfield, Fat Face Sales and profits on the up, Zara Home Opening at intu Bromley, Thomas Sabo These sustainable businesses have substantial sales, a healthy profit and have maintained good financial health.
