From the Director, Christopher Núñez Chicago is a dark satire of the American criminal justice system. In the musical Chicago, crime is entertainment, the press and officials are playing fast and loose with the facts, innocent verdicts can be bought and sold, and fame at whatever cost is the pinnacle of the American dream. Sound familiar? In the roaring twenties, there was no entertainment more uniquely American than Vaudeville. American Vaudeville was made up of over 15,000 venues and 25,000 comedians, singers, ventriloquists, acrobats, animal trainers and anyone who could keep an audience interested for more than three minutes. Bob Fosse knew this world; as a teenage dance act he performed alongside washed up veteran acts in the last dark days of continuous Vaudeville. This genre of live entertainment forms the structure of the play. Our production presents Kander and Ebb’s musical numbers in the style of Vaudeville acts like Sophie Tucker, Helen Morgan, Ted Lewis, Julian Eltinge, and many others. In re-imagining this story for Broadway in 1975, Fosse was exposing the dark deception of show business. As Billy Flynn says… “This trial… the whole world… it’s all show business.” Long before Fosse, Maurine Dallas Watkins originally premiered this play on Broadway in 1926 in a hit George Abbott helmed production. Watkins herself began her career as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune where she covered the various cases of the women incarcerated on “Murderess Row” in the Cook County Jail. Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner were the real-life murder suspects accused of killing their lovers in brutal crimes of passion. On April 5, 1924 Watkins reported, “Thursday afternoon Mrs. Annan played ‘Hula Lou’ on the phonograph while the wooer she had shot during the drunken quarrel lay dying in her bedroom at 817 East 46th Street.” Watkins never wrote another successful play, but her tale was adapted into a successful silent film in 1927 directed by Cecil B. DeMille. 1942 saw William Wellman’s film adaptation starring Ginger Rogers as the titular Roxie Hart. In the 1960s, a tireless Gwen Verdon spent over a decade trying to procure the stage rights to adapt Watkins play into a stage musical. She eventually succeeded in starring as Roxie on Broadway in 1975, with husband Bob Fosse directing and choreographing. By 1996, the musical version was revived on Broadway, spawning the longest run for any Broadway revival in history and a 2004 film that took home the Academy Award. So why does this story resonate in every era? Are “wives with knives” a national pastime? In America; is crime entertainment? “Celebrity supersedes criminality. How can you see clearly when you’re looking into the sun? How can an icon be a con?” – Maureen Dowd, The New York Times.

From the Dramaturgs, Rebecca Curran & Elaine Smith Dramaturgs, Rebecca Curran and Elaine Smith, sat down with Chicago choreographer Kate Gelabert to discuss Bob Fosse’s iconic dance style, and its significance within the production. The original production of Chicago was directed, choreographed, and written by Bob Fosse. What elements and influences define his personal style? As a teen, Fosse was already dancing professionally in Chicago nightclubs, where he was first exposed to Vaudeville and burlesque. Those – plus his compensations for what he considered his flaws in his dance technique – would be the major influences in his dancing and choreography for most of his career. Chicago was the perfect vehicle for him to showcase his style, the burlesque and vaudeville vocabulary of movement, and the popular dances of the 20’s. Most of the principal characters in this show are based on real vaudeville performers. They and other popular entertainers of the period can be seen in old video clips, which are very helpful in staging the numbers in this show. How did this distinct style influence your work on this production? Fosse’s style is unique and in certain numbers, rather iconic. I chose to use much of his original movement ideas, as well as incorporate my own to give the show the Fosse style/look without just recreating all the original. Having never worked with the man, nor danced in a Fosse show, my knowledge is academic; research based on old films, documentaries, master classes, and alumnus who have danced in the Broadway production or national tours to give master classes to my students. It is important for our students to be exposed to this style of dance because his shows are still in demand and being produced professionally. Broadway at FSU: Actress, dancer, and choreographer Ann Reinking, who choreographed the Broadway revival of Chicago, visited FSU as a Hoffman Eminent Scholar in 1994. Can you tell us about that experience? Reinking was a ballet dancer before becoming a Broadway phenomenon, and her knowledge of dance and dance techniques enabled her to not only star as a Fosse dancer, but to also work in the shows of other great American choreographers such as Michael Bennet (A Chorus Line) and Pat Birch (Over Here!). I had the wonderful opportunity to work with her when she came to FSU for six weeks to teach my workshop class which culminated in a review featuring the Music Theatre students. She was a fabulous teacher and the Fosse style was so clear on her body . . . it was like it inhabited her very being.

Patrons Scholar Spotlight:Kelly Astuto Kelly Astuto is a junior BA Theatre major from Miami, FL. She was an understudy Puppeteer and worked run crew in Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat, Jenny/FBI Agent #1/Bart Simpson in Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play, and run crew for A Day in the Death of Joe Egg. After graduating, she hopes to continue to pursue theatre to wherever that may take her, from theme parks to Broadway. Her favorite memory of the School of Theatre is performing for her fellow students in Mr. Burns, A Post Electric Play. She grew so close to everyone in the cast and crew and performing for all of her peers made every bit of hard work worthwhile. While she made her mainstage debut in that show, the people she met during the process are the reason why it is her favorite. She considered it an incredible honor to work with such talented and kindhearted individuals. She would like to thank the Patrons for the wonderful gift of her scholarship. “Thank you not only for your generosity, but also for your continued support for the arts.”
