The School of Theatre at Florida State As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists/educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation.

The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

From the Director, Chari Arespacochaga When In the Heights finally launched its resonant, exuberant wepa on to the Broadway musical landscape, it was clear that this was to be a landmark piece of theatre. It pushed the envelope on mainstream conceptions of a Broadway musical and perhaps, more significantly, brought to the stage previously untold stories of growing up in a Latinx community. This significance has not been lost to us in the creation of this show. Ultimately, what makes this show important is its story. It is the story of a community made up of and woven together by a diverse tapestry of individuals—every single one of them navigating multiple identities— infinite fragments creating a whole in the tensions between knowing their roots and knowing who they want to be, between “scraping by” their realities and clinging to their dreams. It is also a story of home—the home we yearn for, the home we run from—and a reminder that it is the home we choose to make across boundaries of difference that is the best home of all. There is no greater reminder of the need for community than putting up a show. I am deeply grateful for the carnaval of supportive colleagues, brilliant creative collaborators, amazingly inventive production team, superbly talented musicians, and wonderfully generous actors I have had the great pleasure of working with on this show. They have worked ceaselessly to create this special neighborhood for all of you. Welcome! May you celebrate of all the blissful places and beautiful persons you call home. Wepa! For Tenley. I’m home.

From the Dramaturg, Christy Rodriguez de Conte The streets of Washington Heights have changed since Lin-Manuel Miranda premiered In the Heights on March 9, 2008, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. In 2018 The New York Post proclaimed Washington Heights “New York City’s new hipster haven.” As much as this may be an inevitable product of “progress,” parts of the borough remain tied deeply to the roots of its inhabitants. At the foot of 239 Dyckman St. sat the Dyckman Seaman Grocery store, one of the oldest fixtures in the neighborhood until it closed due to skyrocketing rent in 2014. Miranda has claimed it was the bodega where he spent most of his time. It is no surprise then to see Usnavi’s bodega as the central point for the community of In the Heights. Within its doors, the store welcomes a group of diverse individuals with equally diverse stories of origin. The history of the people who fill Washington Heights is the history of Latinx colonization and emigration and immigration into the U.S. The plight of the Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, and other Latinx groups has been to fight for freedom from oppressive regimes, be it against Spanish invasions or in civil and revolutionary wars. These histories are intertwined in the identities that make up many of the stories of origin that built the community of Washington Heights. This musical is an exploration of the voices that find a way and a place to reconcile their multiple identities and multiple homes. It is a window into the unique daily struggles faced by many migrants to maintain traditions and ties to a distant home, while being pushed into the margins over and over again in their current home. It is the story of leaving home and finding home. The FSU production, directed by Chari Arespacochaga, celebrates this multiplicity and creates a home for the audience to witness. She fills the stage with familiar faces and characters that one feels they know. This home is filled with smells of cafe con leche and sounds of bongos and maracas. In an interview with Amanda P. Sidman of the Daily News, Lin-Manuel Miranda proudly shares reactions to the show, “That’s my block!’ regardless of where they live,” says Miranda. “Everyone feels like it’s their block.” So welcome to the block. We hope it feels like home.

Patrons Scholar Spotlight: Rachel Weaver Rachel Weaver is a junior BA Theatre and Creative Writing double major from Sarasota, FL. She directed last year’s Act II production of The Penelopiad, performed in a staged reading of A Lily Among Roses, and was on the run crew for A New Brain. After graduation, she hopes to continue to pursue acting and writing and would love to perform her original work. Her favorite memory at FSU has been directing The Penelopiad. She was able to work with incredibly kind and talented students and watch her creative vision come to life. She is also the Production Manager for the Student Theatre Association and works to give FSU students more artistic opportunities to grow as creatives. She would like to thank the Patrons for their generous donations. “Being an artist is often a low-paying job and their support allows myself and other students the opportunities to keep creating. There are no proper words to thank you for such an incredible gift.”
