The School of Theatre at Florida State As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists/educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation.

From the Director, Jessica West The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! is a “thrilling courtroom dramedy….with music and ham.” Our story picks up where the much-beloved book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith ends with the wolf in jail for his misdeeds, although he claims he was framed. The original fable presents a darker ending with the wolf ending up in a boiling cauldron, “dead as a doornail,” to quote our wolf describing the death of a little pig, victim of a sneezing fit. The story of ‘the three little pigs’ is probably one of the first ones we were taught and remember. In its original form, the story is presented as a morality tale of foolishness versus hard work. Hard work and dedication pays off. As the playwrights chose to set this version in a courtroom, issues of social injustice rear their piggy heads. The themes of the play (and book) quickly turn to prejudice, justice, fear, stereotypes, and truth. An old morality tale presented with such strong themes, set in a courtroom, suggests to me the film noir of the 40’s and 50’s. The major motifs of pessimism, fatalism, and menace that film-noir is known for does not escape our little tale of a misunderstood wolf and two accidentally killed pigs; they are quite predominant motifs in our story as well. The deck is fully stacked against Alexander T. Wolf. On trial in a kangaroo court (or rather a pig court), under a presumption of guilt, he is forced to represent himself and tell his side of the story. In contrast to the dark undertones of film noir and fairy tales from “once upon a time,” our story is a fun one with music and ham…lots of ham. In order to underscore the thinly veiled themes of social injustice in a most delightful fun way for our young audience, I invite you into the world of cartoon noir. The film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” is probably the best example of this style, offering a mixture of bright colors and dark, seedy sepia tones. The movie presents a serious subject revealed in absurd situations and told in a ridiculous manner, much like our play. Cartoon noir with its contrasting style presents an apt metaphor for the moral in this version of the three little pigs: There are two sides to every story.
From the Dramaturg,Teresa Simone Welcome to Piggsylvania! You may think you know the story of “The Three Little Pigs”, but it’s time to reconsider. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs! is based on the hit book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. If you love to read, you may already know this book. Or maybe after you see the show, you will want to read it with your family. This book is narrated by Alexander T. Wolf (“You can call me Al”) who says, “I don’t know how this whole Big Bad Wolf thing got started, but it’s all wrong. Maybe it’s because of our diet. Hey it’s not my fault wolves eat cute little animals like bunnies and sheep and pigs. That’s just the way we are. If cheeseburgers were cute, folks would probably think you were Big and Bad, too.” Now, Al the Wolf is on trial! He sits, the only wolf in a courtroom full of pigs. Is that fair? He is accused of huffing, puffing, blowing the three houses down… and devouring the pigs. But what really happened? The audience is the jury. The play uses a familiar story that we all know and presents it from a different perspective: the villain’s. At FSU, we know that participating in theatre arts helps children build critical thinking skills and the ability to think creatively. Theatre also helps build empathy. This show provides good practice for children, who are developing these important skills, to be able to question why they believe things. Why is the Big Bad Wolf bad? Just because he is different, does that mean he is bad? Could we entertain another perspective? It encourages practices of actively identifying and empathizing. Of course, there is also discernment and judgment involved, because ultimately, the audience has to decide if the Big Bad Wolf deserves to be trusted. This involves analysis of his behavior and actions, and weighing evidence to decide... So what was it that the Big Bad Wolf really did? Youth are not always empowered to express their opinions or to make decisions for themselves. For example, only adults can vote. But, by becoming the jury in this show, as the audience decides whether the Wolf is “Guilty” or “Not Guilty,” young people get a chance to exercise their skills in civic participation. So, after all the testimony has been presented, and you have weighed all the evidence, make lots of noise to cheer for either “Guilty” or “Not Guilty.” Then, when you go home, continue talking about why you made your choice. Maybe, for a fun game, try retelling other familiar stories from new perspectives. Enjoy the show!

At the Theatre... Attending The True Story of the Three Little Pigs! is a special experience that you and your family will remember for a long time. Everyone in the audience is looking forward to seeing the performance just as much as you, so it’s very important to remember the rules of theatre etiquette to ensure that everyone has a fantastic experience! Going to the theatre might seem a lot like going to the movies, but there is one big difference—the actors are performing live onstage, and they can see and hear what goes on in the audience, just as you can see and hear them.
A Few Things to Remember: • Stay with your group at all times. Wait for the ushers to help you find your seat. Seating is very limited and you must sit in your assigned seat. • Make sure you go to the restroom before the show. Leaving your seat during the performance disrupts the actors as well as the audience, plus you miss the best parts! • Don’t chew gum or eat during the performance. Everyone likes popcorn during the movies, but in the theatre we save the snacks for after the show. • The lights will dim just before the performance begins and then go dark. The lights will come back up at the end of the play. • There is no talking or whispering during the performance. This can disturb the actors onstage as well as your fellow audience members. • You are encouraged to clap, laugh, and participate during the performance, but please do not get up and move around. • Show your appreciation by clapping. The actors love to hear applause. This shows how much you enjoyed it! • Do not leave your seat until the cast has taken their curtain call – or bow – at the end. Applauding for the actors is a way you can show them how much you enjoyed the show.
Have a great time!

Patrons Scholar Spotlight: Atticus Taylor Atticus Taylor is a sophomore BA Theatre major from Sarasota, FL. He was on the mainstage last season as Tilney in Shakespeare in Love and Gibson/Scratchy in Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play. He plans to pursue a career in theatre right here in his home state of Florida. His dream job would be to create a role on Broadway but until then, there are so many opportunities here in theatres, theme parks, and cruise lines. His favorite memory of the FSU School of Theatre would be working on Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play, which was his first time working in a space like the Lab Theatre. Since every act was so different, he was essentially playing three different roles and that gave him a lot of flexibility in his performance. He also really enjoyed the musical elements of the show. It gave him the best of both worlds in one production.
