The School of Teacher Education works closely with state and local elementary and high schools to train and produce highly qualified and effective teacher candidates in primary and secondary education. In addition, the College of Education has partnerships with two charter schools that accommodate student clinical placement and research initiatives to strengthen the educational base in the state:

The Department of Sport Management strives

to provide a high-quality education aimed at producing qualified professionals for the sport industry, associated service organizations, and academic institutions. Sport Management faculty members are leaders in their fields, and are proud to serve as a great resource for our students.

In addition to the outstanding faculty resources, the Department of Sport Management also hosts the annual Sport Management Conference right here on FSU’s campus. Past conferences have included speakers and academic leaders from many areas of the sport industry and academia, including The Tampa Bay Rays, Orlando Magic, Fox Sports, The PGA Tour, as well as academic institutions from around the country.

With nine undergraduate programs in both Teacher Education and Sport Management, students work with faculty to improve primary and secondary education throughout Florida and the nation, as well as develop the skills and qualifications they will need as professionals for successful careers within the sport industry and educational environments.

Career Opportunities Every year in Florida, jobs go unfilled and students go unserved, because so few people know about this rewarding and satisfying field of education. Results from a recent study indicate that there is a need for 5,000 new Teachers of Children with Visual Impairments (TVIs) and a need for 10,000 new Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialists to work with children and adults with visual impairments across the U.S. These teachers and specialists help children and adults who are blind or who have low vision to achieve their educational goals and prepare for the future. They work with individuals with visual impairments, their parents, educators, rehabilitation centers and community agencies.

Blended and Online Learning and Teaching (BOLT) is a new online graduate certificate program available to both undergraduate and graduate students that answers the nation’s call to improve digital learning in elementary and secondary education. Four online courses provide current and future teachers and administrators with advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities that are necessary for effective K-12 e-learning and e-teaching. America’s education system is transforming rapidly, so be one of the first to earn a certificate in online teaching. This program begins summer 2011. The program is 12 credithours of coursework and will be listed on a student’s transcript as a certificate.

Blended and Online Learning and Teaching (BOLT)

The Undergraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies is an 18 credit, interdisciplinary, multidimensional, and experiential program open to all Florida State Undergraduate students. The Certificate program prepares students for leadership in multiple contexts and uses practical experience and service-learning projects to frame leadership learning within the context of social change. Upon completion, the Leadership Certificate appears on students’ academic transcript. Why the Undergraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies? - It provides opportunities to learn specific knowledge, skills, and values that can guide you through your collegiate journey and career path. - It can supplement and enhance any major. - Classes discuss various leadership theories and leadership in the context of social change. - It provides opportunities for practical leadership and service-learning experiences. - Upon completion, the Leadership Certificate will appear on your academic transcript.

(Limited Access/Limited Enrollment) Students at the undergraduate level are prepared to be teachers of children, ages birth-21 and their families. Under certain circumstances, individuals may add the courses that lead to an additional specialization in teaching orientation and mobility. (In Florida and in many other states, orientation and mobility specialists who work with children through the schools must also possess the credential to teach students with visual impairments.) Students moving to other states with an undergraduate degree in visual disabilities from Florida State University rarely have trouble obtaining a teaching credential in their new state.

The Bachelor of Science program in Sport Management provides students with the academic foundation necessary to pursue a graduate degree in Sport Management or to pursue an entrylevel position in the sport industry. The program curriculum is continuously refined to meet industry standards promoted by the Council on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA).

Career Opportunities

This program is designed to provide students with an introductory understanding of Sport Management and the various components that make up the sport industry. Although course content mostly focuses on the applied aspects of Sport Management, students will become knowledgeable of the current literature, both applied and research based. The ability to take electives allows students to tailor their program towards their interests, whether they be related to business, recreation, or another discipline.

Undergraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies

• Completion of 5 courses (online or face-to-face sections may vary) • Notifying the OASIS staff in the College of Education upon completion of ALL required courses (OASIS will verify completion prior to the certificate being noted on the transcript)

The Professional Training Option consists of five courses that will assist you in working toward the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAPS). Each Florida school district offers a competency-based, on-the-job alternative certification program. The Florida DOE approved Professional Training Option (PTO) is a program of study for those either currently teaching with a temporary certification (Option A) or those currently pursuing a Bachelors Degree in a subject area (Option B). The PTO is designed to ASSIST those seeking alternative teacher certification through the Florida Department of Education and/or a Florida school district. The PTO requirements include:

Visual Disabilities

The Education of Students with Exceptionalities (ESE) Program is a three-year initial certification teacher education program. The program requires a total of 93 semester hours taken in the junior and senior years of undergraduate study and in a year of master’s degree work. The year of graduate study affords the student an opportunity to specialize in one of the following areas: • High incidence disabilities • Early childhood special education • Autism • Transition • Severe/profound disabilities. Graduates of the program receive the bachelor’s and master’s degrees simultaneously and are eligible for Florida teaching certification in Exceptional Student Education (ESE) and for the English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsement.

Career Opportunities The Social Science Education (SSE) undergraduate program is designed to produce teachers certified in social studies for grades 6-12. It is an NCATE accredited, Florida DOE approved program that is recognized through reciprocity in many other U.S. states.

Our social science education program is taught from a global perspective grounded in the belief that all members of the human family are created equal. Courses address: • multiple perspectives human beings hold of each other and other nations • acquisition of knowledge regarding the diversity of human cultures and their contributions to civilization • the cultural, economic, geographic, and geopolitical interconnectedness among nations and people • consequences of the ubiquity of change • implications of individual choices shaping the future of the world

Bachelor’s/Master’s Combined in Education of Students with Exceptionalities (ESE)

Students who have graduated from our undergraduate program are currently working as classroom teachers in middle and high schools across the United States; those who have graduated from our master’s and specialists programs are middle and high school teachers and college instructors, as well as curriculum specialists, state testing specialists and textbook company representatives. Those who have graduated from the doctoral program in English education are active as university professors, researchers and leaders in the field.

Career Opportunities

Our undergraduate students finish the English Education program prepared to apply for certification in secondary English (grades 6-12). They have numerous opportunities, as part of their course work, to spend time working with adolescents and their teachers in local classrooms; they tutor individual at-risk students, teach small groups, and plan and present lessons to middle and high school classes prior to engaging in a semester-long student teaching internship.

Graduates of our Elementary Education undergraduate program will be eligible for Florida teaching certification in Kindergarten through Grade 6. It is an NCATE accredited, Florida DOE approved program that is recognized through reciprocity in many other U.S. states.

The undergraduate Program in Elementary Education is designed to provide students with both the academic foundation and the hands-on experience necessary to become a successful beginning teacher of Kindergarten through Grade 6. In addition, those successfully completing the program will be eligible for both the Reading and ESOL Endorsements. The program is continuously refined to meet and exceed the changing expectations of the Florida Department of Education and other professional organizations.

Elementary Education

Graduates of the Early Childhood undergraduate program will be eligible for Florida teaching certification in Pre-kindergarten through Grade 3. It is an NCATE accredited, Florida DOE approved program that is recognized through reciprocity in many other U.S. states. Some examples of the broad range of professional roles available to those pursuing graduate degrees in Early Childhood Education include serving as master classroom teachers, college or university faculty, staff specialists in public or private school systems, and in governmental or professional organizations.

Career Opportunities

The Undergraduate Program in Early Childhood Education is designed to provide students with both the academic foundation and the preschool/public school experience necessary to become a successful beginning teacher of children age three through grade three. The program is continuously refined to meet and exceed the changing expectations of the Florida Department of Education and other professional organizations. The Early Childhood Undergraduate Program is a model Service-learning program in teacher education for the state of Florida.
