COURSE INFORMATION

Mental health counselors are highly skilled professionals who engage in a variety of services including diagnosis and assessment, psychotherapy, treatment planning and utilization review, brief and solution-focused counseling, alcoholism and substance abuse treatment, consultation, prevention, and program evaluation.

Fall I (14 credit hours)

The Mental Health Counseling Program at Florida State is: •

a 72 credit hour program that consists of five semesters of academic coursework, practica, and internship, culminating with the degrees of Master’s of Science and Specialist Degree in Education. fully accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Graduates are eligible for licensure in Florida and other states as a mental health counselor. designed to fulfill the preparation component of the Florida Department of Health’s Licensed Mental Health Counselor designation. designed to fulfill the preparation component of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) for designation as a National Certified Counselor (NCC). Students seeking NCC status must also achieve a passing score on the National Counselor Examination, and acquire two years of supervised work experience in an appropriate setting with a qualified supervisor.

Admissions Information The annual fall application deadline for M.S./Ed.S. candidates is February 1. Between 12 and 16 students are admitted each year into the Mental Health Counseling program at FSU.

A Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution. A minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 grading scale) in all work attempted while registered as an upperdivision student working toward a bachelor’s degree. Check our program website for new GRE score requirements. Official TOEFL results are required of all international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied in an English-speaking country for at least one academic year. A minimum score 550 on the paper-based test, 215 on the computer-based test, or 80 on the internet-based test.
