CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION: SOCIAL SCIENCE EDUCATION (PH.D.) FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION M.S., Ed.S., Ph.D.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Florida State Curriculum and Instruction: Elementary Education program is the perfect choice for current teachers interested in gaining more experience and training. The elementary education program offers three different degrees: a master’s (both in-person and online), specialist (Ed.S.) and doctoral (Ph.D.). Regardless of what program that you enroll in, you will be taught by highly accomplished faculty members that have a long history in elementary education. Like all of the Curriculum and Instruction programs, students enrolled in the Elementary Education program will become a part of an intellectual community of scholars who work together and support one another. While students in the Curriculum and Instruction program study a diverse range of topics, they are united by their shared interests and by the tradition of scholarly collaboration. Because of this, students enjoy the resources of a major research university while enjoying a “small school” feel and close mentorship of experienced faculty.

Social Media SOCIAL MEDIA POSTING

The College of Education has an active and growing presence on a number of social media channels. The primary accounts we use include Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, with accounts also on LinkedIn and YouTube. Social media posts can range wildly from informational to entertaining, although most posts incorporate both. At a minimum, every post includes a graphic or video. The Office of Communications & Recruitment adheres to best practices for each of the platforms we use.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADVERTISING

Social media advertising is an effective way to reach interested parties on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Prices vary between the platforms, but the general goal remains the same: to reach people that our social media posts would not ordinarily reach.

Stay Connected education.fsu.edu

facebook.com/fsueducation

Social media advertising can boost the reach of an existing post, or we can create a specific ad campaign. Ad campaigns are a great way to advertise and create interest in programs, particularly before deadlines. We can also provide data on how effective a social media ad campaign performs and can tune a campaign in progress. Advertising budgets can vary, although certain platforms will provide more performance per dollar. Currently, we can run Facebook and Instagram campaigns in-house.

Copywriting BLOG POSTS

Blog posts offer a more extensive look at a topic. They vary in length, but typical word count is 350 to 1000 words. Anything shorter diminishes the search engine value of the post; anything longer typically is too long for the average reader’s attention span. Blog posts are an ideal way to talk about new projects, events (typically as a recap), and research. They are also often used as a landing page for an advertising campaign as they provide more information on a given topic. Blog posts are distributed in social media, This Week in The COE e-blasts, and often via University Communications.

PRESS RELEASES

Press releases are formal information alerts sent out to the news community and frequently to Florida State’s general population. A press release can be about any important topic, such as a new hire, an important award, a new grant, etc. However, the most important part of a press release is the timeliness. As part of the press release, a member of the Office of Communications & Recruitment will be listed as a media contact in the event of additional inquiries. Press releases are also often shared on social media.

THE TORCH MAGAZINE

The TORCH is our triannual publication, with expected publication dates coinciding with the end of each semester. The purpose of TORCH is to engage the College of Education’s alumni, friends, and current students, while also potentially being used as a recruitment tool for prospective students. TORCH articles are typically longer than a blog post and involve extensive research. Thanks to the new digital format, TORCH articles also frequently include video. Issues of TORCH are currently themed, although the theme is intentionally broad to incorporate as many departments and programs as possible.

E-blasts E-BLASTS/THIS WEEK IN THE COE (TWITCOE)

Every week, the Office of Communications & Recruitment sends out a preview of events and happenings in the college, as well as a recap of recent news. This weekly newsletter is called This Week in the COE, affectionately abbreviated as TWITCOE. It is frequently used to advertise upcoming events, deadlines for programs and organizations, and faculty and student news. It is sent to everyone currently in the College, including staff, faculty, undergraduates and graduate students. Additionally, we create and distribute e-blasts. E-blasts can be used to advertise programs to specific groups of people and are a great way to reach out to interested parties. We also use them to promote events to various audiences, including alumni, faculty, staff and students. With e-blasts, we are able to collect data associated with the mailing, such as open rate, link clicks, and opt-outs, allowing us to better hone our messages and strategies. Programs may need to provide a recipient list if an existing list is not on file with the Office of Communications & Recruitment. Lists will also need to be maintained and updated appropriately.

Photo and Video Production PHOTOGRAPHY

Our office is happy to assist you with general photography needs at no charge, but the FSU Photo Lab can handle your special event and professional photographic needs for a reasonable fee (at the expense of the department). We also keep archives of College/Department/Unit event photos, student-group event photos, personnel head shots, Stone Building photos, Tully Gymnasium and campus photos, and more. If you have photos of special events, classes or research-related initiatives, we can archive them with the College.

VIDEO

Videos are quickly becoming the most popular form of online content (Facebook alone has ~8 billion videos viewed each day!), so it’s a great medium to get our message out. Videos can be used for a variety of purposes, including raising awareness about our programs, people, and projects to aid in student recruitment. They can also help faculty members disseminate information about their research as part of our public scholarship mission. Videos are also a great way to hone your “elevator pitch” for your program or project, a skill that will be useful when talking with prospective students, the media, and other constituents. In terms of video length, less is more. People are more likely to watch a 1-2 minute video than a 10 minute video, so brevity is key to keep people engaged. In addition to brevity, plain language is also be very important. You’ll want to avoid jargon and overly complicated descriptions so that the information is accessible and easily understood by a variety of audiences. We know being on camera can be uncomfortable sometimes, so we will work with you on your message and other tips to ensure your video turns out well!

Miscellaneous WEB COMMUNICATIONS

Our office manages the content for the entire College of Education website to ensure quality web-based communications. Requests for website revisions should be made via our website revision request form at education.fsu.edu/news-media/strategic-communications-services.

PROMOTIONAL ITEMS

We keep a limited supply of promotional items imprinted with the College of Education logo that are available for approved events, such as:

• Student recruitment events • Donor/Alumni relations • Visiting lecturers, presenters, faculty candidates, etc. If we do not have the items you are looking for, we can assist you in designing and ordering custom items for your specific needs. Keep in mind that the cost of custom promotional items will be the responsibility of the program/ department placing the order.

MEDIA RELATIONS

One of our office’s most important roles is to serve as a liaison to the media and a conduit for all news dissemination for our faculty, staff, alumni and students. If you are contacted by the media, we ask that you immediately alert us as we have the knowledge, resources, and contacts to best support media relations. We can also help you with tips on how to interview and other best practices when engaging with the media.
