Bronco pride runs strong; our varsity teams have brought home more than 45 championships in recent years in football, basketball, golf, volleyball, tennis, bowling, and softball. Brytne Boccaccio ’12 “FSU helped me with my career plans every step of the way.”
F
uture federal agent Brytne Boccaccio knows FSU has one of the top rated Criminal Justice Departments in North Carolina—a reputation that attracts more than 400 undergraduate majors to the department’s traditional and online classes. That’s just one of the many reasons she transferred to FSU after her freshman year. “At FSU I’ve had the opportunity to meet agents from the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, CIA and Federal Bureau of Prisons. The chance to interact with real agents is very important to me,” says Brytne. Brytne wanted more one-on-one time with her professors along with more opportunities to join campus clubs to hone her natural leadership skills. FSU gave Brytne both. “What makes FSU great is that students can get involved in clubs and organizations that prepare you for your career,” says Brytne, Gaining valuable leadership experience started her sophomore year when Brytne was elected president of FSU’s chapter of The National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice. She is also a member of Alpha Psi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society. Brytne also serves as a Bronco Ambassador for the Office of Admissions. She enjoys sharing her FSU story with prospective students. FSU gives every student a jump start on their future says Brytne, who plans to work for the Federal Bureau of Prisons after graduation. “FSU provides a great atmosphere for seniors through their job fairs. They’ve helped me with my career plans every step of the way.” Sometimes even leaders need a helping hand. Brytne says her professors have reached out to her as mentors, for personal and professional guidance. “I wanted to be in a place where professors knew my name and are always accessible,” she says. “And that’s FSU.” BS Criminal Justice

Patrik kirsch ’13 “I’m really passionate about getting a thorough education.”
P
atrik Kirsch chooses to sit in the first three rows of his classes at FSU. “Now I like to be a leader in the classroom. I like to be the student who answers when the professor asks, ‘Where did we leave off last class.’” That wasn’t always the case, says Patrik, a self-described quiet kid who was born in Germany and moved to Fayetteville when he was nine years old. “I chose FSU because of the smaller class sizes. It feels like the professor is able to teach you one on one.” Questions are answered on the spot, and professors hold office hours for further assistance. When Patrik started class at FSU, he’d hope the professor wouldn’t call on him, but that changed due to his professors’ efforts to involve each student. “It really made me break out of my shell.” Patrik is chair of the Business and Finance Committee of the Student Government Association. He worked on SGA’s “Rock the Vote” student voter registration effort, which educated registrants about the struggles African Americans and women went through to be able to vote. In his classes, he’s required to write research papers related to the course subjects. “That really made you be an independent thinker: to do research, come up with your own conclusion and educate yourself.” Presenting his papers to class boosted his confidence. It’s one thing to read a book and get a grade on the information. I want to be able to discuss with you the subject of business.” “Professors want you to take what you’ve learned in class and apply it to real life. To always give it your all when you are doing a task—and to go beyond the task—is something I got from all of my professors.”

TROY PICKENS ’13 “There were people in high positions that helped lead me and mold me to how I am now.”
T
roy Pickens says that FSU has nurtured his passion for leadership and taught him the importance of networking. “How many universities can you go to where the Chancellor of the University calls you by name and calls you one of his stars? When he said that, I was blown away.”
Troy chose FSU because he wanted to go to a historically black college, and as a first generation college student, he was determined to graduate debt-free. He’s been awarded federal Pell grants, Chancellor James A. Anderson’s special talent scholarship for his singing and a scholarship from the N.C. Black Caucus. He did a work-study program in the admissions office and for the University’s shuttle. He also works at a local car dealership. Troy sings in the University Concert Choir, the University Men’s Ensemble “Men of Distinction,” and the a cappella Opera Workshop. This year marks his third year representing FSU in “105 voices of History,” the Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ national concert choir. He joined the Student Government Association his freshman year and has served as senator and as chair of the Business and Finance Committee. He was chosen for the Royal Court his sophomore year and his junior year was named Mr. FSU. He’s chapter president of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and he volunteered during the summer with AmeriCorps as a theater instructor for the Upward Bound camp for low income kids. At FSU, Troy has met exchange students from China, and he’s performed at the N.C. Governor’s mansion. “FSU has helped me with resume-building, team building and leadership skills—three things I know will continue to push me forward. aking classes from published authors at FSU gives students a taste of creativity that reaches well beyond the classroom. “Writing poetry, lets me sing,” says Weatherford, who encourages her students to share their love of reading. Each year she takes her students to a local elementary school to read and engage with grade schoolers—the next generation of readers. “There is a variety of literature that appeals to students and there are ways to engage every student at FSU,” says Weatherford. Students write for Glint, FSU’s literary journal, and participate in Honors and Study Abroad programs. The interdisciplinary Professional Writing Certificate Program allows students to tailor their coursework. Students enroll in courses from business and technical writing to fiction and writing for online media. With its emphasis on teaching clear communication skills for careers in business, education, law, and the performing arts, FSU’s English programs prepare students for success.
