The history of Fayetteville State University began in1867 when seven black men paid $140 for a lot on Gillespie Street and formed themselves into a self-perpetuating board of trustees to maintain the property as a site for a school. Funds from the U.S. Freedmens Bureau were used to erect a building on this site. The institution was named the Howard School, in honor of General O.O. Howard, director of the bureau.

The mission of the Fayetteville State University intercollegiate athletics program is to bring positive recognition to the University through programs built on concepts such as excellence, integrity, and enthusiasm. The mission is integral to the university’s educational mission and operates under the principles of amateur athletics and fair play, as established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Department of Athletics provides equitable opportunities and support for male and female students to participate in intercollegiate athletics and to compete successfully in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). All activities hold paramount the academic, personal and physical welfare of the student-athlete, and emphasize physical fitness, self-discipline, teamwork, leadership, and the highest standards of ethics, sportsmanship and personal performance. Studentathletes are representative of the general student population and are afforded similar opportunities and treatment. Programs, staff and facilities reflect the excellence of the institution and contribute to the quality of campus life.

In 1877, by an act of the North Carolina Legislature, provisions were made to establish normal schools for educating both black and white teachers. It was thought that the $2,000 appropriated for the education of black teachers could be most effectively used if given to an established school. At that time the Howard School had been in existence for ten years and was therefore designated a teacher-training institution, its name changed by legislative act to the State Colored Normal School. One early leader of the school was Charles W. Chesnutt who was chosen to head the institution in 1880. A prominent writer of fiction and a lawyer, he served as chief administrator for three years. Dr. Ezekiel Ezra Smith followed him as principal, beginning a fifty-year association with the school. During this time Dr. Smith served for a period as US consul-General in Liberia and Adjutant of the Third North Carolina Volunteer Infantry during the war with Spain. The school had no permanent home for 30 years until, under Dr. Smith’s guidance; funds were raised to purchase 50 acres of land on Murchison Road. When Dr. Smith retired in 1933, the institution had grown to include 92 acres of land, eight brick buildings, and several cottages. The school has been fortunate in the quality and energy of its leaders. In 1939 the institution became a four-year college, and in 1960 it became a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The dream of seven black men in 1867 was culminated on July 1, 1972, when Fayetteville State became part of the University of North Carolina System. Fayetteville State University’s enrollment has increased rapidly in the past few years. The University has already reached the 2008 projection of more than 6000 students. A $45.5 million campus construction and renovation campaign is underway to accommodate additional students.

Fayetteville State is considered to have a few of the best athletic facilities in Division II Athletics. The Luther “Nick” Jearalds Football Stadium sports a newly installed synthetic turf field. FSU is the first school in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association to install synthetic turf and the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU), as well as the first in North Carolina, to install the advanced GameDay Grass 3D synthetic turf. The Felton J. Capel Arena is the home site for basketball and volleyball games. The Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Building boasts a 4,000-seat basketball arena, a volleyball court, an indoor walking track, an aerobics studio, racquetball courts, outdoor tennis courts, weight rooms, and an olympic sized swimming pool. The complex boasts four tennis courts with lights.

The Broncos and its facilities have seen an increase in television exposure for football and basketball games. In 2007, Dr. McLean established the 1,000 Broncos Annual Giving Campaign. HEAD COACH

Phillips made several coaching stops at other schools in North Carolina before arriving at FSU. He served as an assistant coach in charge of strength and condition and defensive line at Catawba College in 1987, was North Carolina A&T University’s defensive line and linebackers coach from 198895, was defensive special teams coordinator at Ohio University from 1995-97 before coaching defensive tackles at North Carolina State University from 1997-200. In 1998, Phillips and NCSU made their first appearance in the Micron Bowl against the University of Miami.

DAMIEN ADAMS

ASSISTANT COACHES

Defensive Line

Damien Adams is entering his third season as defensive line coach at Fayetteville State University, after a successful playing career with the Broncos. A 2003 graduate of FSU, Adams was a captain on FSU’s 2002 and 2003 CIAA Championship squads and was named to the All-CIAA team in his final three seasons, 2001-03, at FSU.

Adams received his Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and, soon after graduation, became head football coach at Benson Middle School in Benson, N.C.

In his three years at the helm, he led Benson to a 14-7 record. After his stint at Benson, Adams became an assistant coach in charge of the defensive line at South Johnston High School. Adams helped lead South Johnston to a 10-2 record and a Cape Fear Valley Conference Championship. Under his direction, the FSU defensive line has routinely become one of the top units in the CIAA.

During his first season at FSU, FSU defensive linemen accounted for 11.5 sacks and the Broncos’ defense allowed only 885 yards rushing in 10 games. Last season, Adams coached Darius Powell, a second team AllCIAA selection and Jamaal Dixon, an All-Rookie team pick. Adams’ unit amassed 21.5 sacks, 43.5 tackles for loss and was a part of a FSU defense that held opponents to 12 points or less five times. Adams is married to Teneisha Parker of Tarboro, N.C. and they have one son, Bryce.

DAVID BOWSER Defensive BACKS

A 1992 graduate of North Carolina State University, David Bowser has a wealth of high school and college coaching experience few can match.

Bowser, who is in 11th season at Fayetteville State, is the longest tenured assistant coach not just on the Broncos football team but at FSU. He serves as FSU’s recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach.

In 2009, Bowser’s secondary ranked third in the CIAA in pass defense and set a FSU record, after allowing only nine yards passing against Virginia State. In fact, the Broncos were fourth in the NCAA’s Division II in pass defense efficiency during the Broncos’ 2009 CIAA Championship campaign. Against Bowie State, Joshua Wilkins’ 97-yard interception return for a touchdown set a school record for longest interception return for a touchdown. In all, Bowser’s unit had 13 interceptions during the 2009 season. Over the last two seasons, the Broncos have 32 interceptions. During the 2008 season, Bowser’s unit finished second in the nation in pass defense efficiency and ninth in interceptions. All starters in the secondary (Jeff Gowdy, Donte Wise, John Hicks and Adrian Horton) were in the top 45 in passes defended in Division II. Gowdy was 9th in pass defended and interceptions, Wise was 21st, Horton was 18th and Hicks was 45th.

With Bowser aiding his development, Gowdy was a firstteam All-CIAA member three consecutive seasons. In 2008 and 2009, Gowdy had six interceptions. His 16 career interceptions are tied for the most in school history with Jermel Johnson (1998-2001) and Walt Williams (200304).

Since arriving at FSU in 2000, Bowser has been a part of three CIAA Championships and coached a host of All-CIAA players. As recruiting coordinator, Bowser is in charge of developing relationships with high school coaches across the country and building a rapport with potential studentathletes.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Before coming to FSU, Bowser had several stops at North Carolina high schools and helped a myriad of players to earn college scholarships.

Heath was born in Winston-Salem, N.C. before moving to Ft. Bragg, N.C. with his family. At an early age he developed a love for athletics while participating and excelling in football, basketball and baseball.

He served as secondary coach at Garner High School in 1992-93, secondary coach and head men’s varsity basketball coach at Anson Senior High School in 1994, head football coach at Westover High School in 1995, defensive coordinator at Chapel Hill High School in 1996, defensive coordinator at Orange High School from 1997-98 and recruiting coordinator and secondary coach at Hampden-Sydney College in 1999. James Payne (ECU), Ken Laws (ECU), Travis Cash (UTChattanooga), Israel Sturdivant (Belmont-Abbey), Charlie Johnson (Catawba), Tony Riggsbee (WSSU) and BJ Cameron (WSSU) are just a few players that Bowser helped earn college scholarships.

Bowser played cornerback for the NCSU from 1988-92 where he boasted a perfect 4-0 record against in-state rival North Carolina.

TIM HEATH

RUNNING BACKS Tim Heath joined the Fayetteville State staff as the wide receivers coach in 2004. As he enters his seventh year, Heath now coaches running backs and brings with him over 30 years worth of coaching knowledge and leadership.

Under the guidance of Heath, former Broncos’ wide receiver Darryl Barnett was named to the 2008 All-CIAA team. Barnett led the conference in receiving touchdowns (12) and ranked sixth in receptions (33).

He went on to star at Irwin Middle school and later at Seventy-First High School, in Fayetteville, N.C., where he carried his team to the 1972 high school state 4-A championship.

Heath’s earned a scholarship to play at Fayetteville State University. During his time at FSU, Heath earned AllNAIA honors and was instrumental in the most successful period FSU history prior to current Head Coach Kenny Phillips’ arrival. In 2002, Heath was inducted into the FSU Athletic Hall of Fame. Heath began his teaching and coaching career after graduating from FSU in 1976. After over 20 years of service in the public school system, Heath returned to FSU in 2001 to become the Director of Intramural Sports. Heath is married to Eva Paterson-Heath, who is the head coach of the FSU Women’s basketball team. They have three daughters, one son and four grandchildren.

GARY LOWERY

ASSISTANT COACHES

OFFENSIVE LINE

Gary Lowery enters his third season as Fayetteville State’s Offensive line and Strength and Conditioning coach.

Lowery helped develop junior center Dillon Kestner into a two-time second-team All-CIAA selection in his first two seasons at FSU.

A 6-foot-2, 260-pound native of Durham, N.C., Kestner has been voted CIAA Offensive Lineman of the Week three times. In addition to Kestner, Lowery guided Cedric Willis to a selection to the 2008 All-CIAA second team. Also, sophomore guard Larry McDonald was named to the All-CIAA Rookie team in 2008.

Despite injuries to multiple starters during the 2009 season, Lowery coached an offensive line that showed steady progress throughout the season. Behind the offensive line, the Broncos’ offense scored 29 or more points in five of its last seven games. Prior to coming to FSU, Lowery spent three years at Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville, N.C. as linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator.

During his tenure with the Buccaneers Lowery, who received a B.S. in sociology from Union College in 1998, coached 13 players that signed scholarships with Division I schools. Included in that list is Xavier Nixon, a starting offensive tackle at the University of Florida who was ranked the No. 1 offensive lineman in the country by Rivals.com. As a player at Union, Lowery was a three-year starter on the offensive line and three-time allconference selection. Lowery also coached offensive and defensive lines at Union after graduation.

Lowery obtained a Master degree in Educational leadership in 2007 from Union, a Master in Sports Management from American Military in 2008 and is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Sports Management.

RICHARD PORTEE

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR Former National Football League, North Carolina Central University and North Carolina State University assistant coach Richard “Dick” Portee enters his first season as Offensive Coordinator at Fayetteville State.

Portee, a 45-year coaching veteran, joins the FSU staff after spending last season as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at NCCU. This is Portee’s second stint at FSU; from 2007-08, Portee was assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach with the Broncos. Portee was running backs coach at North Carolina State University during the 2000-2006 seasons and held the same post with the Wolfpack from 1990-98. In between his two NCSU coaching campaigns, Portee spent the 1999 season in the NFL as running backs coach with the Cleveland Browns.

Portee is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, where he played running back and defensive back before receiving his bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education in 1965. He went on to earn his master’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Illinois State University in 1971. Portee’s coaching career began in 1965 at his alma mater, Eisenhower High School in Decatur, Ill., where he coached football, basketball and tennis. His collegiate coaching career started as a defensive and offensive backs coach at Illinois State University from 1969-1976.

From 1977-1981, he served as recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach at Cornell University. He also spent time at the University of Maryland as an assistant coach, coaching outside linebackers and wide receivers from 1982-1989.

WIDE RECEIVERS

A 2004 graduate of Fayetteville State, Wayman Westbrooks is in his second year as Fayetteville State University’s Wide Receivers coach. Since graduating from FSU, Westbrooks has coached wide receivers at Maryvale High School in Phoenix, AZ at Phoenix College and at West Phoenix High School.

At Maryvale HS, Westbrooks also coached defensive backs and punters and helped Maryvale to two conference championships and two appearances in the Arizona state playoffs. During his two years at Phoenix College, Westbrooks helped six wide receivers earn scholarships at four-year colleges, one of which is currently playing professionally for the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League. As a player, Westbrooks starred at Wide Receiver and Punter at FSU from 2001-03. He was a team-captain on the 2002 and 2003 Broncos team that won back-to-back CIAA Championships.

In 2001, Westbrooks was All-CIAA honorable mention and in 2002 set an FSU single-season record, which would later be broken by Daryl Barnett, with 10 touchdown catches.

He is married to Angela Westbrooks and they three children Hassan, 13, Mireya, 2, and Jalen, 1.

FAYETTEVILLE STATE BRONCOS “FUELED BY WINNING” The defending CIAA Champion Fayetteville State football team enters the 2010 season with a blend of experience and fresh faces. The Broncos return 13 starters from last season’s 8-4 team that captured the school’s third CIAA title. With Head Coach Kenny Phillips back for his 11th season, FSU’s quest for a fourth title is fueled by winning. OFFENSE

Returning to the backfield is alleverything senior running back Richard Medlin (Raleigh, NC); who has led FSU in rushing two of his three seasons. Medlin rushed for 667 yards in 2009 and has 10 touchdowns in each of the last two seasons. His 23 career rushing touchdowns are second best in FSU history. He has accumulated 1,949 yards on the ground and has returned 29 #22 Richard Medlin career kick returns for 858 yards.

Transfer Marvin Crews (Brooklyn, NY) will make an immediate impact in the backfield at the fullback and halfback position. Standing 6-foot-5 at 265 pounds, Crews started at fullback for two seasons at Hudson Valley Community College. “Crews is a large fullback that is extremely athletic. He’s a devastating blocker at the point of attack. I expect him to play a large role in our offense at the H-Back position, replacing his former Hudson Valley teammate Tyshon Gurley,” stated FSU Offensive line coach Gary Lowery. Helping Medlin gain yards, and touchdowns, will be an offensive line that returns four of five starters from the Broncos’ first-round NCAA Division II tournament game against California University of Pennsylvania. Anchoring the line is two-time All-CIAA second team senior center Dillon Kestner (Durham, NC). Also returning are junior Larry McDonald (Red Springs, NC), sophomore #50 Dillon Kestner Alexander Anthony (Murfreesboro, NC) and junior Jerald Hunter (Henderson, NC).

FSU will continue to look for a winning chemistry at the quarterback position. Third-string quarterback Jamere Pugh had a surprising CIAA Championship game with three catches and one touchdown. His move to the wide receiver corps will remain, while the Broncos look for leadership from transfers and new signees.

New signee James Harvin will have a shot at the quarterback position. The former team captain of Victory Christian High School in Charlotte, NC is 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds. With the addition of Pugh, Sidney McClettie and BJ Washington will be the top two receivers returning. The two finished the season with as much as nine games played and an average of 180 yards between the two. Washington (Baltimore, MD) had 14 catches for 221 yards and one touchdown. McClettie (Charlotte, NC) had the fourth longest catch of the season with a 42 yard haul#19 BJ Washington in. DEFENSE

Defensively, FSU will look to replace several key graduating seniors, including starting linebackers Marcos Esquivel, Gerard Atkinson and Joe Brown and safeties Adrian Horton and Jeffrey Gowdy.

Bryce Williams, of St. Petersburg, FL, is a former teammate of All-CIAA Linebacker Marcos Esquivel. The 6-foot-2, 215 pound linebacker is on the LB’s in the Western States Football League at Mesa Community College. “Bryce has a reputation for being very physical and intimidating on the field. Williams will have an excellent opportunity at gaining immediate playing time at the linebacker position.” FSU defensive backs coach David Bowser. The Broncos expect great seasons from senior cornerback John Hicks (Wilmington, NC) as well as senior defensive end Darius Powell (Waldorf MD), sophomore nose guard Jamaal Dixon (Gatesville, NC) .

In FSU Head Coach Kenny Phillips’ defensive system, corners are often required to play near the line of #20 John Hicks scrimmage and help stop the run. Bowser said Hicks’ physical nature makes that natural for him. In 2009, Hicks had 24 tackles, four pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

“John has no problem with coming up on run support,” Bowser said. “I never have to worry about, week-to-week, if John is willing to put his body on the line. You have to be willing to run

and be willing to put a pad on somebody if you’re going to play defense for Coach Phillips.”

Hicks will team up with sophomore Joshua Wilkins (Riviera Beach, FL) to man the cornerback positions. Against Bowie State, Wilkins’ 97-yard interception return for a touchdown was the longest in Broncos’ history. Jamaal Dixon, one of the few true freshmen to see action for Phillips’ team in 2009, was selected to the CIAA All-Rookie team and sealed FSU’s 21-10 CIAA Championship win over Bowie State with a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Newcomer Daniel Pinnix (6-1, 205 lbs.) from High Point (NC) Andrews High School will rotate from the linebacker position to the defensive end position. Pinnix was a two-time PAC 6 2-A All-Conference selection by the Greensboro News & Record. He can bench press 315 lbs and was named the team’s strongest player. Daniel led the PAC 6 conference with 110 tackles (85 solo) and 13 sacks. “Daniel is a very versatile player and can play multiple positions. He was forced to play defensive end this year and ended up on the All-Conference team. He’s got the tools and has a great football IQ. He was 160 pounds when he got here and now he’s a monster in the weight room and our strongest player.” - H.P. Andrews Head Coach Rodney McKoy “He was able to be a game-changer at times for H.P Andrews. In combination with Quan Stevenson (who is committed to Duke) they had a pretty potent one-two punch at linebacker.” - Steve Hans, Sports Writer, The High Point Enterprise SPECIAL TEAMS

FSU will also return, for the second straight season the CIAA Special Teams Player of the Year (Medlin won the award in

2008). Junior kicker Austin Turner topped the CIAA with 88 points, 34-of-37 PAT’s and 17 field goals. He was also named the Pigskin Club’s CIAA Player of the Year.

#14 Austin Turner

Turner put points on the board at a historic rate this season. In fact, Turner’s 88 points last season are the third most in single-season school history. His 17 field goals are the second most in a single season and in a career at FSU. In the Broncos’ 30-20 win over Bowie State on Sept. 12, Turner booted a 49-yard field goal- The longest in FSU history.

“Before Austin leaves here, he’ll probably own every kicking record at the university,” Phillips said.

Phillips’ team will carry several good streaks into the 2010 campaign. FSU has won nine of its last 11 road games and allowed only 16.5 points per game in those contests. In CIAA play, the Broncos have won 16 of their last 21 games.

Did You Know? • Under Head Coach Kenny Phillips, FSU has scored 30 or more points 35 times. The Broncos are 31-4 in those games. FSU is 10-0 under Phillips when scoring 50 or more points and 4-0 when scoring 60 or more points. • •

FSU senior running back Richard Medlin has 23 career rushing touchdowns, second best in FSU history. Over the last two seasons, FSU has compiled a 16-6 record and a .727 winning percentage. The only two-year winning percentage better is a .785 percentage (11-3-1) from 1975-76.

Challenging First Half Schedule face 2009 CIAA Champions Fayetteville State Plays Six Opponents with Six or More ’09 Victories Fayetteville, NC – The 2009 CIAA Football Champions Fayetteville State University will square-off against six teams which finished with six or more victories. The schedule will also highlight the Broncos longest rival in football history – Winston-Salem State. FSU won back-to-back championships in ‘02 - ’03 and will look to accomplish the same feat in 2010. “This is not the first time we’ve played a difficult schedule, that’s one of the things we’ve always done here,” said Broncos head coach Kenny Phillips. “We try to play the toughest competition we can play in the beginning of the season and it usually helps

when we get to the middle and end of the season.” The season will begin on September 4th in Pembroke, NC at the 2nd Annual Two Rivers Classic against UNC Pembroke. The Braves finished the ’09 season with a 9-2 overall record which includes a trip to the NCAA DII Playoffs. The two institutions met on the gridiron for the very first time last year. UNCP won 41-34 in triple-overtime in front of 8,300 fans. Kickoff for the classic is set for six o’clock pm.

The Broncos will honor the ’09 championship team once again, but for the public, during its first home game of the 2010 season on September 11th. Bowie State University (6-5 overall last season) and FSU met twice in 2009, including FSU’s 21-10 win over the Bulldogs in the CIAA Championship game. FSU won the regular season contest 30-20. Fayetteville State leads the 28-game series 15-12-1 and in championship games 2-0. FSU Director of Athletics Dr. Edward McLean and the Broncos will return to Rocky Mount, NC for the 13th Annual Down East Classic on September 18. Dr. McLean developed the event when he was the director at Elizabeth City State. The classic will feature the Broncos against Vikings. ECSU finished 7-4 overall last season with a 21-7 loss to Tuskegee in the Pioneer Bowl. The Broncos-Vikings rivalry is second longest FSU football history. In 60 contests, ECSU has a slight 29-23-5 lead with three scores unaccounted for. The first Down East Classic — a 10-7 FSU win over the Vikings — resulted in the largest number of fans in the history of the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex. An average of nearly 8,000 fans has attended the game each year.

With the return of Winston-Salem State to the CIAA, the Broncos longest rivalry will be reignited on September 25th in Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium. FSU and WSSU first met on the gridiron in 1940 and have squared off 62 times while the Rams hold a 44-15-3 series advantage. This will be the first game between FSU and WSSU in Fayetteville since 2005. Adding intrigue to the match-up is former FSU Offensive Coordinator and now Rams Head Coach - Connell Maynor. Maynor spent his last ten seasons with Phillips and the Broncos on the sideline.

Fayetteville State will hit the road for three consecutive away games. The first will the homecoming contest for the Saint Augustine’s on October 2. The Broncos man-handled the Falcons last season 56-6 during its own homecoming and has won the last three match-ups.

FSU will continue on the highway for a contest against Virginia State (6-4 overall last season) on October 9th in Petersburg, VA and its final away game of the regular season on October 16th against Shaw. The 6-4 Trojans defeated Fayetteville State 25-20. The defeat marked three consecutive losses in LNJ Stadium last season.

The 8-2 Shaw Bears were eliminated from championship contention by the Broncos last season. As the seventh opponent of the season, the games against Shaw normally determine if the Broncos will make a trip to the CIAA Championships. FSU missed it trip in 2008 with a 19-12 loss to the Bears and advanced last season with a 29-28 victory. Bronco Homecoming Activities will be highlighted by a football contest against Livingstone on October 23. The last victory for the Blue Bears over the Broncos was in 2003; a 28-27 homecoming victory for LC. Kenny Phillips is 9-1 against Livingstone and has won three-straight homecoming games. Phillips’ team will close out the regular season with home games against Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union. On October 30, the Golden Bulls will come into LNJ Stadium for a one o’clock match-up while the Panthers will do the same on November 6. JCSU held a 12-7 halftime lead over the Broncos.

Virginia Union, who finished 6-4 overall last season and lost a three-way tie coin toss for a championship appearance. In 19 contests, VUU leads the series 9-8-2. FSU won six games in row from 2002-2006 including the CIAA Championship game in 2003 but lost the previous contest in 2007, 34-17 on the Broncos’ field.
