NOTES ON THE PROGRAM

“Emily’s Words” was composed in 2021 for submission to the Boston New Music Initiative. This will be the work’s premiere public performance.

Seven Housman Songs is Hoekman’s earliest song cycle, composed in the 1980s and dedicated to Carla Connors.

American Lyrics is a group of five songs, each with a different American poet.

To Make a Prairie is a song cycle commissioned by the South Dakota Music Teachers Association. The song cycle went on to win the Music Teachers National Association’s composition competition in 2002, and Hoekman was awarded the title of Shepherd Distinguished Composer of the Year.

The Nash Menagerie was premiered at Glimmerglass Opera by FSU College of Music graduate David Walker, countertenor, with Timothy Hoekman at the piano.

Three Poems of William Butler Yeats was commissioned by the Rawlins Piano Trio, which is in residence at the University of South Dakota. The set is included on their CD Attracting Opposites.

“Der Werwolf Rag” is the third of the Drei Legenden, which were commissioned by Esther Nelson, former General Director of Boston Lyric Opera and Glimmerglass Opera, to celebrate the birthday of her husband, Bernd Ulken.

The Werewolf

One night a werewolf left his wife and child and made his way to a village school teacher’s grave and asked him: “Please conjugate me!”

The school master climbed up on the brass knob of his nameplate and spoke to the wolf, who patiently crossed his paws in front of the dead man:

“Der Werwolf,” said the good man, “des Weswolfs, genitive then, dem Wemwolf, dative, as it’s called, den Wenwolf—that’s the end of it.”

The werewolf was flattered by the cases; he rolled his eyes. “All right, then,” he requested, “now add the plural to the singular!”

The school teacher, however, had to confess that he knew nothing of that. Certainly there are wolves in large packs, but “Wer” exists only in the singular.

The wolf got up, blinded by tears— after all, he had a wife and child!! But since he was no scholar, he departed, thankful and resigned.

Your Devoted Hugo is a song cycle based on letters written by Austrian composer Hugo Wolf. It was composed for and premiered by Evan T. Jones. “Mörike Madness” is the fourth of ten songs.

Three Irish Folk Songs was premiered by Carla Connors, clarinetist Frank Kowalsky, and Timothy Hoekman.
