Alyssa Morris is an American composer and oboist born in 1984. Brush Strokes is a four movement work where each movement is meant to emulate the brush works of famous painters. The first movement, Monet, depicts the ever changing running water through beautiful melodies and shifting melodies. Seurat, has a jaunty character encapsulating the pointillism in Seurat’s famous works. The third movement, Van Gogh, is meant to depict the famous Starry Night through the overall darkness of the piece and swirling melodic lines. Pollock is the final movement, using flourishes of notes to depict Jackson Pollock’s “drip technique.”

Chin Ting Chan (b. 1986)

Chin Ting Chan’s (b. 1986) Mirage for flute, B-flat clarinet and percussion is a sonic representation of a mirage - an optical allusion caused by atmospheric conditions that cause light rays to be bent and refracted. This phenomenon creates allusions which often cause objects to seem to be displaced, such as a pool of water appearing in the distance on a hot road. Such an illusion is represented in the piece. As Chan describes, the work features “rapid successions of sound events” that appear as “imaginary displaced “objects” in a mirage.” Silent Flower
