NOTES Baris – A staple of the Balinese dance music repertoire, this piece customarily accompanies a solo dance by an elaborately costumed warrior character. In this instrumental arrangement, feature sections have been incorporated to highlight the unique interlocking figurations of the reyong gong-chime, gangsa metallophones, and kendang drums. Sinom Ladrang – This classic piece was composed centuries ago for the royal gamelan semar pegulingan, or “gamelan of the love god’s pillow room.” Pieces such as this were performed outside the palace bedchamber during the king’s amorous encounters. This arrangement attempts to capture the unique timbre and aesthetic of semar pegulingan music on FSU’s gamelan gong kebyar, a more modern type of ensemble. Features like the prominent suling bamboo flute, high-pitched bells, small-sized kendang drums, and a lead melody played on the reyong in place of its lowerpitched trompong counterpart, all serve the purpose of capturing a semar pegulingan-like sound. Beleganjur Guruh dan Guntur – Beleganjur is the processional gamelan of warfare and spirit battles with underworld forces in Bali. It is music of power. In this newly created piece, we emphasize the power of our brand new gongs, making their debut in this concert. Their names are Guruh and Guntur, references to the powers of thunder and divine forces. These names, bequeathed to the gongs by Dr. Indra Sadguna, former director of Sekaa Gong Hanuman Agung and faculty member of the Indonesian Institute of Performing Arts in Bali, doubly serve to honor our great guru I Ketut Sukarata, aka Tut Nang, whose heirloom drums in his native banjar, Belaluan Sadmerta, are named Guruh and Guntur as well. Kecak – Descending from an ancient trance-dance ritual called Sanghyang Dedari, or “trance dance of the celestial nymphs,” the mesmerizing gamelan suara, or “vocal gamelan,” texture of the Balinese Kecak dance drama is featured in this vocal percussion arrangement, in which we invite you, the audience, to join us in some veritable monkey business (the drama enacts a battle featuring an army of mythic monkey warriors from the Hindu epic Ramayana).
