The Kahl & Nyce Duo (Don-Paul Kahl, saxophone and Zachary D. Nyce, piano) has been performing repertoire and new music for the dynamic duo of saxophone and piano together since 2010 while studying together at Susquehanna University in Central Pennsylvania. There the duo premiered and worked on student compositions for saxophone and piano garnering both experience and flexibility with the ensemble. Since then, the ensemble has performed, premiered, record-ed, and advocated for new works by major American and European voices: Libby Larsen, Mischa Zupko, Michalis Andronikou, Gregory Wanamaker, and Rudi Tas, to name just a few.

The duo has established an international reputation having performed together in Europe, Japan, and the United States. Having been raised in the Central Pennsylvania region, the duo is currently developing projects with both local, national, and international composers and artists. This is to bring cultural awareness and advocacy to the region, to link their hometown areas to the rest of the world through music, and to promote new music and new voices in the saxophone and piano ensemble. The Kahl & Nyce Duo were selected as recipients of a prestigious 2022 Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant for the funding of Aliyot | Ascents by renowned composer, Yotam Haber.

Described by distinguished American composer John Corigliano as an “artist beyond his time,” concert saxophonist, Don-Paul Kahl has performed throughout Europe, the United States, Australia, and South-East Asia. He has been an invited artist with many prominent music festivals in Europe and the US including, the KURAIA festival (ES), Tallinn New Music Days (ET), SoundPlasma Festival (DE), Mise-En Festival (US), and many more.

Kahl released his debut solo album entitled Go Within on the Equilibrium Label in September 2021. The album features six works for which he is extremely passionate by all living composers. Five of the works were directly commissioned by Kahl, two of which were conceived solely for this project. Featured composers include Molly Joyce, Stratis Minakakis, Eleni Ralli, Gregory Wanamaker, Mischa Zupko, and Kenichi Ikuno Sekiguchi. He collaborated on this project with pianist Alessandro Cervino.

Kahl was a prizewinner at the prestigious 4th Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition in Bangkok, Thailand. As an avid and in-demand chamber musician, Don-Paul is active with the internationally acclaimed saxophone quartet, Ensemble du Bout du Monde (EBM), his duo with clarinetist, Jackie Glazier, Duo Entre-Nous (D2), with WOODWORK, a dynamic reed quintet based in Belgium, and the Central Pennsylvania saxophone and piano duo, Kahl & Nyce Duo.

Don-Paul Kahl is a Henri Selmer Paris and Conn-Selmer performing artist, and proudly performs on Selmer Paris saxophones and mouthpieces exclusively. www.donpaulkahl.com

Dr. Zachary Nyce holds degrees in music performance from Susquehanna University and Bowling Green State University including a Doctorate of Musical Arts with an emphasis in Contemporary Music. His teachers include Dr. Naomi Niskala (S.U.) and Dr. Laura Melton (B.G.S.U.). He has performed regularly as a classical, jazz. and rock musician throughout the East Coast and Midwest for a decade.

Nyce has also been a featured performer and collaborator in Honduras, Greece, and Japan. Recently, Nyce has received a grant from Chamber Music America to commission a new work by composer Yotam Haber for saxophone and piano with internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Don-Paul Kahl. Currently, you can find Nyce performing regularly in the Harrisburg area as a solo artist, with his fellow bandmates in classic rock cover band, Katz 22, and alongside singer Erica Lyn Everest. In 2023, the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame has recognized Nyce as one of the Best Male Artists in the area.
