Brazilian violinist Dr. Pedro Maia is an assistant professor of violin in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University. He has played in some of the world’s most prestigious venues across Asia, Europe, South America, and North America, including Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Sala São Paulo, and the Seoul National Theater. His most notable performances include his debut in Mexico, performing Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons with the Orquesta Filarmónica Tlaxcalteca and his Carnegie Hall debut at Weill Hall with Cosmos New Music ensemble.

As a dedicated pedagogue, Dr. Maia has given masterclasses and been on the faculty of programs in Chile, Colombia, the United States, and Mexico, including festivals such as Interlochen Summer Arts Camp and Cuerdas Frotadas Osorno. His students have placed in competitions such as the NOLA Chamber Fest and Music Teachers National Association Competitions.

As an orchestral musician, Dr. Maia is a member of the Iris Orchestra under the direction of Michael Stern and has performed with the Mobile Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, and the Florida Orchestra. He has collaborated with some of the world’s leading conductors, including Paul Tortelier, Kurt Masur, and Emil Tabakov, and has performed alongside artists such as Shlomo Mintz, Itzhak Perlman, Roberto Díaz, Alex Klein, Yo-Yo Ma, and Albrecht Mayer.

Dr. Maia holds both a Doctoral and a Master’s degree in violin performance from Florida State University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. His principal teachers have included Erich Lehninger, Katia Andrade, Nadia Nedialkova, and Shannon Thomas.

Christina Lai, from Plantation, Florida, is a passionate music educator and collaborator, committed to bringing diverse repertoires to local communities. She has worked with composers like Pulitzer Prize winner Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Missy Mazzoli, and Liliya Ugay, and premiered a work by Ugay at Carnegie Hall with her trio, Trio Riva. Christina has also commissioned works by Yuying Weng and Eunseon Yu, focusing on cultural fusion. As a UNC Asian American Center Fellow, she advocates for Asian female composers and Asian hate crime awareness.

Christina has performed in venues and at festivals across the United States and Europe, including at University of South Florida, University of Florida, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Interlochen School of the Arts, Chautauqua Institution, Brancaleoni International Music Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival and School as a Thomas S. Kenan Fellow.

In addition to performing, Christina has led workshops on piano pedagogy at national conferences and taught at institutions including Western Kentucky University, Florida State University, and the University of North Florida. She was also co-founder of Chamber Music Festanza and Director of Operations and Programming for PRIZM Ensemble.

Currently, Christina manages The Florida Orchestra’s Department of Education and Community Engagement. She holds a Master’s and Doctorate in piano performance from Florida State University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
