Catch Rossini’s masterpiece, Il Barbiere Di Siviglia , by our acclaimed opera program or enjoy the dazzle of Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, from the University Symphony Orchestra on our Concert Series. Enjoy the amazing and intimate music of the Aizuri Quartet and their fresh approach to chamber music as part of the Housewright Virtuoso Series. PRISM, Seasonal Celebration, and the annual Rainbow Concert are all back as Special Events in our beautiful concert spaces. Join us as we kick off our season of concerts on Friday, September 15.

University Symphony Orchestra (RDCH)

Conducted by Alexander Jiménez, USO opens the 2023-24 season with the powerful Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring violinist Thomas Roggio (winner of the 2023 Doctoral Concerto Competition) and Brahms’ Symphony No. 1.

Wind Ensemble (RDCH)

Our top undergraduate band performs wind band classics conducted by Patrick Dunnigan.

University Symphony Orchestra (RDCH)

Conducted by Alexander Jiménez, Rimsky-Korsakov’s evocative masterpiece, Scheherazade, is the centerpiece of this USO performance. Based on the tale of 1001 Arabian Nights, this work showcases the virtuosity of our amazing orchestra students.

Honors Jazz Combo (OMH)

FSU Jazz is pleased to welcome international jazz bassoon virtuoso Michael Rabinowitz as special guest soloist with the Honors Jazz Combo. This performance conducted by Rodney Jordan will feature jazz standards and original works by Rabinowitz and members of the combo.

Fall Opera: Il Barbiere Di Siviglia (RDCH)

Join us for a comedic jaunt through Seville, Spain on the shoulder of the magnificent barber and Renaissance man, Figaro, as he attempts to help Count Almaviva woo and rescue Rosina away from her older and duplicitous guardian, Doctor Bartolo. Hijinks and hilarity fill this wonderfully familiar score by Gioachino Rossini based on the play by Pierre Beaumarchais. (Sunday matinée at 3pm.)

Join our talented vocalists in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall as they perform their first concert on the season, conducted by Kevin Fenton.

Wind Orchestra (RDCH)

Welcome our new director of Wind Orchestra, alum Rodney Dorsey, as he conducts our talented group of musicians, including the College’s New Assistant Professor of Tuba, Matt Hightower, featured in Michael Daugherty’s tuba concerto, Reflections on the Mississippi.

Ready for something new?

Experience the Festival of New Music from February 1-3 and join us for the closing concert on February 3 in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. This final concert of the festival will feature the USO, conducted by Alexander Jiménez, and Wind Orchestra, conducted by Rodney Dorsey. Enjoy what you heard? Stick around for a chance to meet the composers!

University Philharmonia (OMH)

Join our premiere undergraduate orchestra, conducted by Alexander Jiménez for a night of beautiful music.

University Symphony Orchestra (RDCH)

Faculty violinist Benjamin Sung joins the USO on Erich Korngold’s luscious Violin Concerto. The USO will conclude the program with the massive Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique. Conducted by Alexander Jiménez.

With a lush and beautiful score, FSU Opera brings the Czech language to the stage in this stunning work by Leoš Janáček. The Cunning Little Vixen explores the cycle of life, along with its inherent trials and tribulations, through the experiences of a vixen. (Sunday matinée at 3pm.)

Get ready for artful compositions and sweet sounds, old and new, as the University Philharmonia takes the stage. Conducted by Alexander Jiménez.

Chamber Choir (RDCH)

Experience the vocal prowess of our talented Chamber Choir as they delight our audience with masterful singing. Conducted by Michael Hanawalt.

Wind Ensemble (RDCH)

Celebrate spring with an evening of contemporary wind band music featuring our top undergraduate students. Conducted by Patrick Dunnigan.

Wind Orchestra (RDCH)

The College’s top wind band, conducted by Rodney Dorsey, closes out the spring series featuring College of Music Professor of Viola Pamela Ryan in a consortium premier of American composer Joel Puckett’s new viola concerto, I wake in the dark and remember.

Jazz Ensemble I (RDCH)

Jazz Ensemble I welcomes jazz guitarist extraordinaire, Mike Moreno. Works for the evening will include several of Moreno’s original compositions arranged for big band and conducted by Leon Anderson.

Summer Opera: Glory Denied (OMH)

Based on a true story, this incredible work describes the experiences of a returned Vietnam war veteran. Tom Cipullo’s Glory Denied is a moving and powerful experience not to be missed.

HOUSEWRIGHT VIRTUOSO SERIES

The Housewright Virtuoso Series features renowned artists from around the world and from our esteemed faculty in the College of Music. This unique and eclectic concert series provides a rich array of musical styles presented by some of the most distinguished artists in the music world. Faculty Chamber Concert (OMH)

College of Music faculty present Beethoven’s Septet, Op. 20 for clarinet, bassoon, horn, and strings - the most popular of Beethoven’s compositions during his lifetime. Additional works on the program include compositions by Maurice Ravel and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco with a stunning harp feature.

John Bucchino (Music Theatre) (DRH)

Join us for an evening of glorious story-telling through song. The College of Music is excited to welcome award-winning composer and songwriter John Bucchino to campus for a concert of his songs featuring the Music Theatre students of Florida State University.

Aizuri String Quartet (OMH)

Winners of major chamber music competitions in America and Asia, the Aizuri Quartet comes to Tallahassee for the first time with a program featuring works by Clara Schumann, Bartók, and Haydn. Join us for an evening with this group The New York Times applauds as “genuinely exciting,” “imaginative,” and “a quartet of expert collaborators.”

Ryan Speedo Green (OMH)

Grammy Award-winning bassbaritone and Artist-In-Residence Ryan Speedo Green returns to the FSU College of Music for a series of performances and masterclasses. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to be up close and personal with one of the world’s rising opera stars in concert on November 7.

HOUSEWRIGHT VIRTUOSO SERIES

The Housewright Virtuoso Series makes possible guest artist residencies and masterclasses like those with the Aizuri String Quartet, joining us October 19, 2023.

Howard Watkins

(LON)

Distinguished performer, educator, and assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, Dr. Howard Watkins has appeared in major venues around the world and has collaborated with many of today’s leading musicians. This performance is the culmination of Dr. Watkins’ residency and will feature student performers from the College of Music.

Two Flutes and... (OMH)

Mary Matthews and Karen Large present “Two Flutes and...” featuring chamber music performed with faculty and students from the College of Music. The program explores repertoire from the Baroque era through the 21st century and is sure to delight audiences with something for everyone!

Dave Wronski and Friends (OMH)

Pioneering surf and instrumental rock guitarist Dave Wronski presents a program of original music from his decades-long career as one of the most innovative musicians in LA’s studio and club scene. The reverb-soaked sounds of the 50s meet the energy of 80s punk and the virtuosity of contemporary progressive rock in a powerful and intimate trio format.

Dohnányi Chamber Players (OMH)

Violist Csaba Erdélyi returns to FSU in this first of three performances by the Dohnányi Chamber Players. Works for the evening include Dohnányi’s String Quartet No. 2, as well as selections from Zoltán Kodály and Gabriel Fauré.

New Directions in Brazilian Music (OMH)

FSU Musicology professor and composer Panayotis (Paddy) League presents a program of works inspired by decades of research and performance in Brazil. The suite of pieces, “Sereias do Mar Mineiro” (Mermaids of the Mountain Sea), pays homage to the popular music traditions of the states of Minas Gerais and Paraíba, and features an ensemble of FSU and FAMU faculty and students on accordion, harp, strings, brass, woodwinds, and Afro-Brazilian percussion.

Dohnányi Chamber Players (OMH)

Guest artists Andrés Cárdenes (violin) and Michael Klotz (viola) join College of Music faculty to present Dohnányi’s exuberant Piano Quintet in C Major. Additional works on the program include Brahms’ powerful final violin sonata and Bartók’s Contrasts, a wonderful fusion of folk and jazz idioms.

Chamber Music by Canadian Female Composers (OMH)

Join Evan Jones and Diana Dumlavwalla for an exciting and eclectic program of chamber music by Canadian female composers. Through recorded video explanations, hear directly from these accomplished women and learn about the inspiration behind their craft.

Hung-Kuan Chen (OMH)

A pianist of uncompromising individuality and a remarkably inspiring pedagogue, Juilliard Professor Hung-Kuan Chen performs treasured masterpieces from the piano repertoire in a solo recital as part of his residency.

Dohnányi Chamber Players (DRH)

College of Music faculty members Read Gainsford, Ian Hobson, and Greg Sauer conclude this chamber music series with Dohnányi’s Suite in Valse, presented here in a twopiano version of the orchestral work, Schumann’s Kreisleriana, and Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for cello and piano.

HOUSEWRIGHT VIRTUOSO SERIES

Join Hung-Kuan Chen, one of the most decorated pianists of his generation, as he takes the stage in Opperman Music Hall on February 19 presenting a solo recital filled with masterful virtuosity and poetic vision.

Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with Nobuyuki Tsujii (RDCH)

Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii joins the famed Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-minor along with an orchestral arrangement of Schumann’s Carnaval, Op. 9 and an exciting new work by composer Natalie Joachim. Don’t miss the firstever visit to Tallahassee by this amazing orchestral ensemble!

PRISM: Band Extravaganza (RDCH)

There is no bad seat in the house for this one-of-a-kind band extravaganza! Join members from each of the College’s bands (and Marching Chiefs) as they create an immersive musical experience with selections that range from classical to current pop favorites.

Seasonal Celebration (RDCH)

Join the combined choirs of the FSU College of Music as they “sing in” the holiday season - audience participation encouraged! Staged in the beautiful Ruby Diamond Concert Hall, audiences will be surrounded by song as the choirs take full advantage of the hall’s stage, aisles, and balconies.

Rainbow (OMH)

Now in its 28th year, the College of Music’s annual Rainbow concert is a celebration of musical diversity. Featuring performances from each of the world music ensembles, audiences will be treated to music and dance from around the globe.

Subscriptions and single tickets can be purchased online at our website: tickets.music.fsu.edu . You may also purchase by phone at: 850-644-6500 or in person starting August 28 th at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, located within the Fine Arts Building at 540 W Call Street. Tickets can also be purchased at each event starting one (1) hour prior to the start of the performance.

ACCESSIBILITY

Accessible seating for all persons with disabilities is available for all shows online, by phone, or in person on a first-come, first-served basis. If ordering by phone or in person, please mention your interest in wheelchair accessible seating, hearing devices, or other special accommodations. Hearing devices are available for all Ruby Diamond Concert Hall events.

TICKET DELIVERY

Tickets can be delivered for free via email. Tickets may also be picked up at Will Call or mailed for a service fee.

DISCLAIMER

All programs, artists, ticket prices, locations, dates, and times are subject to change without notice. All service and delivery fees are nonrefundable. In the case of a cancellation, only the face value of the ticket will be refunded.

LATE ARRIVALS

Performances begin promptly at the time printed on your tickets. Late seating will take place at a point in the performance determined by the artists and the artistic staff. Please try to arrive approximately 20-30 minutes prior to the event’s curtain time.

PARKING

Street parking around the FSU campus is free after 5pm and on weekends. Parking in campus parking lots is free on weekends, but a permit is required Monday through Friday until 10 pm.

DRESS CODE

There is no formal dress code - be yourself and enjoy the music!

RECORDING POLICY

Photos and video are not allowed during our performances. Please feel free to create memories of our musicians and beautiful spaces before or after the concert.

INTERMISSION

Most intermissions are approximately 15 minutes long. Get up, stretch your legs, use the restroom or meet some new friends in the audience.
