The FSU College of Music is widely recognized as a top tier university-based music program with a long tradition of excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. COLLEGE OF MUSIC Do you dream of performing music on stage for enthusiastic audiences around the world? Do you aspire to direct a band or choir of eager students preparing to become the next generation of musical leaders? Do you imagine a life spent using music to help and serve others? No matter how you want to use your musical talents, the College of Music at Florida State University is the place for you. We are one of the largest and most comprehensive music schools in the world. Our student body is large in size and diverse in scope, with over 700 undergraduate and about 400 graduate students from nearly every state and many foreign countries. Yet we balance individualized instruction with amazing ensemble experiences made possible by our large student body. With over 500 annual concerts and recitals featuring students, faculty, and guest artists each year, there are many opportunities to listen, learn, and grow.


FACULTY When you join us, you will study with leaders in the fields of music performance, education, therapy, theory, composition, arts administration, commercial music, jazz, musicology, and ethnomusicology. Faculty accomplishments include Grammy Awards, Pulitzer Prizes, Guggenheim Fellowships, as well as performances at Carnegie Hall and other major performance venues throughout the world. Our faculty are enthusiastic teachers and their success can be measured by the thousands of College of Music graduates who have entered the profession as public school teachers, professional performers, conductors, college and university professors, music therapists, composers, scholars, administrators, and private music teachers.


PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES Ensembles The College’s numerous band, chorus, jazz, opera, orchestra, music theatre, world music, and early music ensembles each present one or more public concerts every semester.

FACILITIES

RUBY DIAMOND CONCERT HALL (1,200 seats) is the College’s state-ofthe-art, premier performance hall for opera performances and major concert productions.

DOHNÁNYI RECITAL HALL (220 seats) is the setting for student recitals, masterclasses, and small ensemble performances.

OPPERMAN MUSIC HALL (440 seats) hosts large ensemble performances, major guest and faculty recitals, and numerous chamber programs.

LONGMIRE RECITAL HALL (150 seats) is the College’s most intimate recital hall. Many student and faculty recitals are held here.

LINDSAY RECITAL HALL (100 seats), a multipurpose teaching and performance hall, hosts student recitals, masterclasses, and guest presentations.

The College of Music operates five recital halls in four buildings, all located on the north-east corner of campus.


MUSIC LIBRARY The Warren D. Allen Music Library is one of the major music libraries of the southeastern United States. Housed in 18,000 square feet of space with comfortable furnishings, listening and viewing stations, and a technology-enhanced seminar room, the Music Library provides students with impressive resources and surroundings. • Print items: 192,913 volumes, including 79,000 scores. • Audio and Video items: 60,428 volumes. • Online music subscriptions and databases, including Naxos Music and Jazz Libraries (125,000 albums), Alexander Street Press Music Online (794,000 albums), Alexander Street Press Classical Scores Online (50,000 scores), Oxford Music Online/Grove Music Online, RILM Abstracts and Music Index online, and JSTOR.

As a music major, you will learn and perform in state-of-the-art, technology enhanced classrooms, research, and performance spaces.


UNIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY The College of Music is an integral part of Florida State University, a major residential and research university where over 41,000 students study with worldclass faculty, enjoy first-rate facilities, and benefit from programs covering the entire spectrum of collegiate studies. Tallahassee is a rapidly growing urban community and the capital of Florida. Music majors begin practicing their craft in the numerous elementary and secondary schools in Leon County, at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, and in local arts organizations and state agencies. Local performance venues include the College’s many recital halls, as well as the Civic Center, large downtown churches, jazz clubs, restaurants, and Cascades Park. Tallahassee enjoys a mild change of season and is close to the Gulf of Mexico and other natural recreation areas. Students can easily drive to Orlando, Tampa, Atlanta, Savannah, and New Orleans for recreation, to attend concerts, and to pursue additional professional opportunities.



STUDENT LIFE As a student in the College of Music, you will build friendships and professional networks that will last a lifetime. You can also enjoy all the educational and recreational opportunities this major research university has to offer. Imagine cheering on one of our nationally ranked athletic teams, taking in a theatre or dance performance, participating in student government, all in addition to performing in some of the hundreds of concerts and recitals we present each year. Many undergraduate music majors also choose to live together in the Music Living-Learning Community at Cawthon Hall. This residence hall, just a two-minute walk from the College of Music, houses up to 150 music students who attend class there. In addition to state-of-the-art living and classroom space, the Music LivingLearning Center provides students with immediate access to a group piano studio and music technology resource center, and rehearsal and practice space. Because the College of Music is conveniently located on the northeast edge of campus, you will be within walking distance of restaurants, coffee shops, and student housing. Campus plus city bus lines and parking facilities are right outside our doors.
