T
he Division of Student Affairs at Florida State University is pleased to present its Annual Report for 2008 – 2009. This year, we are focusing on the accomplishments of our individual departments. Additionally, eight students describe how their involvement on campus made them the men and women they are today. These students and so many others are making a difference on campus and throughout the world. We wish we could tell the stories of all of our students who we work with and are so proud to call Seminoles. Through collaborative efforts, we have reached new accomplishments we are proud to share with you. FSU has placed an emphasis on cultivating leaders for the greater good, and we feel we are playing an instrumental role in helping the campus community reach that goal. This, of course, would not be possible without the ongoing support and contributions our donors have provided that are integral to our success.
Thank you for reviewing our accomplishments of the past year and continuing to be partners as we help students reach their aspirations of today and tomorrow. Sincerely,
Mary B. Coburn Vice President for Student Affairs
2 12
Mission The Division of Student Affairs collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to create welcoming, supportive and challenging environments that maximize opportunities for student learning and success. Through high quality programs and services, the Division staff facilitates student development, celebrates differences, and promotes civic and global responsibility.
Liz Maryanski Associate Vice President Student Affairs
Vision We envision a Florida State University where students, faculty and staff embrace an inclusive learning community with respect, responsibility and acceptance for all cultures. Graduates will make meaningful contributions to a global society through character, competence and integrity. They will make ethical decisions and be committed to a life of service and leadership.
Eric Weldy Associate Vice President Student Affairs

Trevor Hurd T
revor Hurd serves as an aquatics supervisor at the Bobby E. Leach Center where he, along with other student managers, supervises 25-30 of his peers. What started as a part time job has turned into a passion for him. Trevor came to “Leach” as a freshman with no life guarding skills but a willing attitude. Since gaining the necessary skills, he has gone on to serve as a student life guard for the past two years, as well as teach other students those skills. “The Leach Center and Campus Recreation provides a good environment for students to use for physical growth. There are great equipment and programs, not just in aquatics, but also with the fitness classes, consultants, and team sports such as intramurals and sport clubs.” FSU also offers students the opportunity for parttime employment. Student employees are faced with real life circumstances where they can put into action the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce. “I have learned to
4
interact with people from different backgrounds from professional staff “...good or co-workers to patrons of the Leach environment Center. I have also learned how to communicate with people and use for students problem solving skills to respond in a crisis.” to use for To better understand how to physical transfer the skills learned through his involvement in Campus Recreation, growth.” Trevor has taken advantage of the services provided by the Career Center. “I have been able to get help with my resume by working with advisors at the Career Center.” Trevor plans to pursue a career as a project manager within the geology field.
Theresa Welles T
heresa Welles has spent the past year as a graduate assistant with the University Counseling Center’s RENEW (Realizing Everyone’s Need for Emotional Wellness) program. Theresa came to FSU after a career in school counseling in the secondary school system. She now works with inspirational students who are passionate about peer “...the education and who serve as ambassadors opportunity to their peers regarding mental health services. The RENEW students are to gain trained through BACCHUS, a certified invaluable peer education board, to teach and relate to other students about mental health leadership issues and encourage student development qualities.” in multiple aspects of their lives. “Being a member of RENEW offers students the opportunity to gain
invaluable leadership qualities. Not only do they serve the campus community, but they learn about public speaking, communication, organization and time management.” RENEW has also teamed with other peer education boards across campus, such as Thagard Student Health Center’s STRIKE, to sponsor events like the Great American Smoke Out. The health peer groups educate students about drinking and smoking, as well as increase awareness on issues such as mental health and nutrition. After an intense application and screening process, Theresa has been awarded a prestigious pre-doctoral internship through the American Psychology Association and will continue her passions of student development and counseling with the University Counseling Center during 2009-2010.

Brian Wallace, JR. A
lthough Brian Wallace, Jr. first found “home” within the Office of Multicultural Affairs’ Caribbean Student Association, it was his experience at LeaderShape - a weeklong retreat that inspires, develops, and supports students who have a commitment to lead with a high level of integrity - which served as a spring board to his involvement on campus. Brian wanted to “give back” to others on campus and represent those who need a voice. He served as budget chair on the Oglesby Union Board and learned valuable lessons as he “worked outside of his element” on issues of great importance, such as how to work with partners across campus and create a stronger voice for underrepresented campus groups like the Caribbean Student Association and new students. Brian assisted incoming freshmen in achieving their goals throughout their first year as part of the Student Supporting Students Mentoring Organization through the
6
Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement (CARE). “I loved my experience in the CARE program as a freshman and I felt it was my duty to give back and mentor new students like so many had done for me.” To continue his desire to help those in need, Brian took his interest “I loved my in medicine abroad as part of the experience International Medical Outreach. Brian’s career goal is to continue to advocate in the CARE for the underrepresented as he pursues program as a medical degree with a focus to serve a freshman.” people who are underprivileged. “Once I got back from LeaderShape, I became involved in different aspects of campus life and I have appreciated the opportunities available to all students.”
Carly Nasehi M
y decision to study International Affairs was primarily due to my interest in cultural exchange and my fascination with international cooperation—preserving regional distinctiveness while going beyond differences to work together for the welfare of mankind,” says Carly Nasehi, an Honors student in International Affairs, who is also seeking a second degree in Religion and a minor in German. Carly immersed herself in the German culture through the Beyond Borders program. Her second visit was “...increased “unforgettable, with a packed itinerary of travel from Berlin to Poland, great group international dynamics—we were welcomed into the student homes of the German students’ families, worked in a supported employment engagement program, and visited children with on campus.” disabilities at a top-notch, cost-free facility.”
While managing a heavy course load, yet maintaining a near perfect GPA, Carly is also working toward a Certificate in Demography and using her international experiences to obtain a Global Pathways Certificate. This certificate is designed by FSU Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, to maximize the rich cultural learning experiences available to students on campus, in the community and abroad. Despite her many accomplishments, Carly will be remembered at FSU for her tireless efforts on behalf of international students. As a peer mentor, she became keenly aware of their needs. “They face challenges to their daily functioning —housing, immigration, language, meals, and transportation are all topics of concern.” While serving as secretary of Multicultural Affairs for the Student Government Association, she worked to increase the international student representation through initiatives and advocacy. She says, “FSU can experience substantial positive growth from increased international student engagement on campus.”

Elizabeth Pagan T
he staff members at the Center for Leadership and Civic Education always keep me thinking and challenge me to find my passions.” Elizabeth Pagan calls the “The Center” her second family as her volunteer work, both domestic and international, has helped to “shape and define” her values. Her involvement with FSU’s Service Leadership Seminar has been “rewarding”. She has served as a freshman participant, upperclassman facilitator, and now the student coordinator. Beth says she has been able to see the big picture of helping new students find their way on campus, while also emphasizing the importance of community service and leadership training. Last summer, Beth traveled to Uganda for two months to work in villages, teach in the local schools, empower single mothers, and educate the citizens with HIV/AIDS about the resources available to them. She was able to take this trip through FSU donor support of Serviceships. “This trip helped
8
me better understand what is important and narrow down the passions of what I “...challenge want to spend the rest of my life doing.” me to find Beth also spent three weeks in Costa Rica where she lived with a host my passions.” family as part of the cultural exchange program, Beyond Borders. This program has been recognized as a Best Practices in International Exchange by the International Knowledge Community of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). After graduation, Beth wants to continue work with grassroots organizations to bring about change and fight social issues. She plans to pursue graduate work in developmental study with an emphasis in African studies.
Bobby Seifter I
fell in love with the campus at first sight, and was taken aback by how friendly every student and staff member was; they treated me like I was one of their own before I had even attended the university.” Bobby Seifter jumped into campus life by getting involved with a number of opportunities in the hub of campus, such as the Oglesby Union. When he walked the halls of the Union as a freshman, he knew he wanted to get involved in the student senate. A junior, Bobby now serves as the President of the 61st “I fight Student Senate within the Student Government Association (SGA), one every day... of the youngest to obtain this position. for future He is also involved with the “Protect Our Professors” campaign as one of generations the original members; Bobby says he of Seminoles.” is overwhelmed by how successful the
initiative has been so far and how much support for faculty and staff has been accumulated across the campus, the state and the country. “In these tough economic times, I try to be an approachable leader and someone who can help explain the rough budget cuts the university is currently going through. I fight every day to try to keep the lifestyle we all enjoy here at Florida State the same for future generations of Seminoles.” The hands-on experience that SGA provides teaches students problem solving techniques they will continue using in their professional careers, as well as self confidence and a greater understanding of the university environment. In his numerous efforts to improve FSU, Bobby has invested his time into making campus a truly unique place for students by promoting engagement in the community.

Rickey Goins R
ickey Goins has made the most of his time at Florida State University with involvement in a number of programs across campus. Welcoming students and families to campus during Orientation or helping educate his peers about issues of sexual violence has taught Rickey the importance of communication and ethical leadership. “As the “Often, the peer education coordinator for processes and the Victim Advocate Program, it is important that we educate the programs we campus about safety concerning produce are these issues and offer suggestions of ways students can protect created through themselves.” partnerships This past year, Rickey also served as a student senator, chairing across campus.” the Student Senate Judiciary
10
Committee. In this role, he examines the statutes and considers their impact on the campus community before they are brought to the senate floor. He has also taken his passion for the student judicial process campus wide, serving as a Chief Justice with the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. “Often, the processes and programs we produce are created through partnerships across campus, so I have had the opportunity to gain a diverse background that will help me in a future career in higher education.” Rickey is part of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Undergraduate Fellows Program which mentors students who plan to obtain a masters degree in student affairs administration. “Through these involvements, I have found my future career path as I plan to pursue a judicial affairs career in higher education.”
Aaron Hood D
uring his freshman year, Aaron Hood was the floor representative of Dorman Hall, a position in which he helped “plan programs to make our campus the home that everyone strives to find.” He then became vice president of Dorman Hall’s government and served on the Inter-Residence Hall Council (IRHC) Board of Directors. In April 2006, he was elected assistant director of the IRHC, and in December 2006 he took on the role of director, a position in which he represents more than 6,000 students living on campus. “Florida State’s campus feels like home,” says Aaron. “It’s as though the students live in a giant living room. With the closeness of the buildings, our separate colleges rub elbows when classes let out and everyone is trying to get a bite to eat before the next class.” It is this atmosphere Aaron attempts to create for all students who live on campus. “As an agency of the Student
Government Association, we present residential students’ issues to the “...to make Student Senate and to members of the our campus University Housing administration.” Aaron has been instrumental in the home changing the image of IRHC as it that everyone has begun to offer quality programs, including leadership development. strives to Through University Housing and find.” the work of IRHC, students have the chance to develop skills and relationships, and better understand their responsibilities as members of the University community. As a result of his on campus experiences, Aaron is now pursuing a career in higher education administration.

or Albert J. and Judith A. Dunlap, having access to higher education as young people was the key to their success in life. So the Dunlaps generously supported the building of the Albert J. & Judith A. Dunlap Student Success Center which is located in the heart of campus. The building consists of approximately 50,000 square feet which is the new home for The Center for Leadership and Civic Education and the Career Center. In addition, the building houses classrooms, computer labs, meeting rooms, a career library, and career advising for students to utilize while they attend FSU. Planning for the building began in 2004 and was dedicated in September 2008. “We have made a very significant gift, but we truly believe that gift will be properly used for the betterment of the students and the institution,” Dunlap said. “And hopefully out of this, the university will continue to produce those great leaders and the fine young people that we’ve seen up there.”
