Spotlight: Meet the Director What is your academic goal for the new HSA? “My goal is to bring about a more unified curriculum and more consistent curriculum. I also want to add more honors classes” What is your goal for the social aspect of HSA? "I am extremely impressed with the way that the HSA has taken the reigns to create a more cohesive honors community. Keep up the good work!" What is your favorite amino acid? "Lysine, stay tuned to find out why." Are you trying to introduce anything new and exciting into the Honors Program? "Actually, yes! I am trying to connect FSU Honors alumni to the the current honors students in order to set up an alumni network that current students can connect with once they graduate. My hope is to help foster working relations between the Honor’s Programs past and future members that will be beneficial to all parties in the pursuit of knowledge and life."

From the Director's Desk

Dear Honors Students, Welcome back to campus! I have enjoyed my first semester as Honors Director and I am looking forward to the future of FSU Honors. For those of you that do not know me, I earned my Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Chemistry and Mathematics in 1984. I then worked at a zinc foundry for two years in Los Angeles, CA. This job was not very interesting so I went to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and earned my doctorate in organic chemistry in 1992. After that I spent two years as a postdoctoral associate at Duke University. My first academic appointment was at Creighton University in Omaha, NE where I received tenure in 1999.

Living in Omaha had its drawbacks so I moved to Sonoma State University in CA as chair of the chemistry department before coming to Florida State University in 2005. Throughout my career I have received numerous teaching awards, been awarded two research grants from the National Institutes of Health, published seven research papers, and have worked with 35 undergraduate research students. When I am not working or attending FSU sporting events, I love to spend time with my lovely wife Shel. We also have two wonderful daughters, Emma will graduate from UNF this coming April and Paige is a freshman here at FSU. An interesting fact about myself, I have visited all 48 continental states.

Sincerely, Mark Kearley

Alumni Spotlight: Noel McDonell Noel McDonell graduated from the FSU Honors Program in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Criminology and from the FSU College of Law in 1990. She began her career in government service and was ultimately appointed by the Attorney General to Senior Assistant Statewide Prosecutor in the Office of Statewide Prosecution, where she practiced throughout the state investigating and prosecuting complex white collar criminal activity.

During her tenure in government practice, Noel was awarded the Davis Productivity Award for her efforts on the Governor’s Task Force against Identity Theft. In addition, Noel was appointed as Florida Real Estate Commissioner under Governor Jeb Bush. In 2002, Noel joined the law firm of Macfarlane Ferguson & McMullen, P.A., where she continues to practice today as a partner and director. In addition to maintaining a dynamic trial practice, Noel is also an avid owner of American Saddlebred horses and is active in the equine industry within both the highly competitive world circuit and the fundraising community. Closer to home, she is an enthusiastic saltwater flats fisherman and boater.

A Guide to (Actually) Completing Your Goals 1. Set goals because you want to. The worst thing to do for yourself is set a goal that you know you can't achieve. Set goals that you know will bring you happiness. If you really want to read 500 books by the end of the year, then do it, but do it because YOU want to.

2. Set SMART goals. Specific - don't leave any room for error! Measurable - Goals that can be measured over time like reading "x" number of books by the end of year are easier to achieve because you can track their progress. Attainable - Making goals attainable will boost your self confidence and keep you motivated! Relevant - Your goals should help you and be relevant to your life. Time Bound - Give your goals a deadline! !

4. Make a plan!

3.Write them down, tell your friends..tell your mom. They'll keep you accountable.

4. Make a Plan. If you're setting a year-long goal or a similarly large goal, break it down into smaller victories. This will keep you motivated throughout the year!

5. Just do it! You are going to rock 2017!
