HSA Director's Welcome
Dear Honors Students:
Welcome to the new year in the FSU Honors Program! I especially extend a warm welcome to our outstanding class of incoming honors students–I hope you are finding a sense of community and support in the honors program as you transition into college! You’ll look back on this year proud of what you accomplished and we will be proud, too. It is my pleasure to write this note on behalf of the Honors Student Association (HSA), which provides all of you with a breadth of meaningful experiences that are only available to you as honors students. From delicious and plentiful monthly breakfasts in HSF to information sessions and opportunities to meet other honors students, the HSA leadership board is working hard to make your experience in honors at FSU engaging and gratifying! I urge you to participate often and meaningfully in your honors community through engagement with your very own student organization, dedicated to helping you navigate life in college, from finding “your people” and developing new kinds of friendships to identifying the many cutting-edge undergraduate engagement experiences available to you at FSU. Your participation does not always require more pre-planning or adding yet another set of tasks to your “to-do” lists–just showing up at the many activities on offer will make your college experiences richer while contributing positively to the honors culture at FSU! As director, I welcome your sincere feedback so we can enhance all aspects of the honors program so that they meet your needs and interests. In addition to sending me an email note or asking to meet with me in person, I ask that you complete the first honors evaluation survey, which was sent out earlier this month. The survey is comprehensive but should take less than 10 minutes of your time. As you know the more students that participate, the better our information will be and the more funding we are likely to receive for the program. We need all hands on deck! Please pay it forward and complete the survey by October 7th by going to: https://fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3gd1XbkNRal9EQl If you started the survey but did not complete it and wish it is still open to you.
By completing the survey, you will be entered in a drawing to win one of five spots at lunch with a faculty member, the director, and other lucky student lunch companions! In addition to the wonderful HSA events scheduled for the semester, students and faculty in the Honors Experience Program are hosting the following events (with free food) and all are welcome: Friday, 9/20 from 9:30-4:30 in the HSF Great Hall & Classrooms: Freedom and (In)Equality Symposium. See your classmates present their scholarly and creative projects during themed panels and a mid-day poster session! Tuesday, 10/8 at 5:30 PM in the HSF Great Hall: Professor Dr. Eve Troutt Powell, University of Pennsylvania, presents a talk titled, “All Eyes on the Eunuchs: The Visual Culture of an Ottoman Servitude.” This is a 3D (Discuss, Dialogue, Deliberate) Event. ·Friday 10/11 at 6:30 PM in the HSF Great Hall: Public historian Dr. Joe Knetsch presents on Floridian utopian communities. This is a 3D (Discuss, Dialogue, Deliberate) Event. Friday 11/15 at 4:00 PM in the HSF Great Hall: Dr. Robin Watkins of the Federal Bureau of Prisons presents on her work as a prison psychologist as part of the HEP Imprisonment Series. This is a 3D (Discuss, Dialogue, Deliberate) Event. I am excited about the quality and direction of our honors program, which is growing in resources, staff, faculty and offerings for students. Speaking of new staff and faculty, I want to introduce you to the latest members of our team: Dr. Arianne Johnson Quinn, who recently completed her Ph.D. in Musicology, teaches courses on musical theatre. Dr. Michael David Franklin, who completed his Ph.D. in American Studies, is developing programming and new ways to enhance the Honors in the Major (HITM) thesis experience at FSU. Welcome Drs. Quinn and Franklin! I wish you a gratifying, mind-stretching and fun semester ahead! I know you’ll work hard to reach the finish line, but I encourage you to find time to rest, unwind, and just give yourself time to make new discoveries about yourself. Dr. Schwabe

Student Spotlight:
Savannah Woller
Savannah Woller is a senior at FSU majoring in both psychology and sociology. Below Savannah reflects on why she chose FSU, her involvement on campus, her experiences with Honors, and her hopes for the future. Q: Why did you choose FSU? A: When I was in high school, I had my eyes set on another school. My parents still wanted my brother and I to tour FSU. I was very insistent that we came to FSU just for my brother. I took ten steps on campus and I felt like I was home. I could envision the many opportunities here and growing and being pushed to my full potential.
Q: What groups and organizations are you involved with on campus? A: Within the Honors program, I have been an Honors Colloquium Leader since my sophomore year. One thing that I am very passionate about is mental health advocacy. I have been a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) since my freshman year. NAMI aims to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness on campus, and this year I am lucky enough to serve as President. I am also involved with RENEW as the Vice President. RENEW is a peer education program associated with the University Counseling Center that aims to promote emotional wellness. I am also a part of Lady Spirithunters. One thing that I fell in love with was how
passionate people are about FSU, and I wanted to join an organization that really cared about FSU traditions. Lady Spirithunters is dedicated to preserving and passing on FSU traditions and atevery athletic event on campus you can find members of Lady Spirithunters painting warstripes on fans’ faces.
Q:How has honors effected your experience? A: Without Honors my experience at FSU wouldn’t have been the same. Within the Honors community, I have met so many inspiring people and have been pushed to grow as an individual. Seeing how successful my peers are motivated me to be successful too. Q:What is your favorite memory with Honors? A: My favorite memory with Honors has been the collection of teaching my classes. The moments and experiences I have made with my students is something that I will always carry with me. Q:What are your plans for after graduation? A: After graduation I plan on earning my PhD in Clinical Psychology. One day I hope to be a Clinical Psychologist and teach at a university. I am currently working on my Honors Thesis in Dr. Schmidt’s Anxiety and Behavioral Health Clinic. Working on my thesis reaffirmed my decision to go into a research-oriented field.

Faculty Spotlight Arianne Johnson Quinn, PhD
For this month's Faculty Spotlight, we feature Dr. Quinn! Dr. Quinn is the new Honors Experience Program Faculty Member. Below Dr. Quinn discusses her educational background, involvement at FSU, experiences as an educator, and advice to undergraduate students. Q: Describe your educational background. A: I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of New Mexico where I studied piano performance. I then
completed a Master of Arts in Music and Women’s and Gender Studies at Brandeis University completing a thesis on the life, musical works and feminist representation in the works of Caterina Assandra (1580-1620), a Benedictine nun who lived in Milan. I completed my PhD in Musicology at Princeton University, taking courses in musicology, ethnomusicology and music theory, and specializing in musical theatre. My dissertation focused on the London theatre works of American songwriter Cole Porter (1891-1964), who composed Kiss Me, Kate among other important works.
Q: Describe your involvement at FSU. What courses do you teach? How else are you involved on campus? A: I am one of four core faculty members in the Honors Experience Program, where I teach and develop curriculum, mentor students, jointly supervise undergraduate honors thesis projects, and plan extra and
co-curricular activities. This fall I am teaching courses on Identity and Difference in the American Musical, Creative Freedom in the Musical Theatre of the Weimar Republic. In the Spring I will teach a course on Nationalism and Cultural Identity in the British Musical.
Q: Describe some of your favorite experiences in your career either while in school or as an educator. A: My favorite experiences as an educator include moments where students suddenly realize their own potential and learn to use this in connection with a particular subject. I love watching students discover the joy of archival research, and helping them use their skills in my classroom and beyond. Q: What advice do you have for undergraduate students that you wish you knew when you were in college? A: Try everything! Take as many different courses as you can, even in fields that are new to you. Some of my favorite courses were things like flamenco dance, modern art, political science and psychology—all of which were outside my major. Not only will you have the chance to meet fellow students across disciplines and learn from the many brilliant faculty across our campus, but you will expand your own sense of possibility for your future. Q: Do you have anything else that you would like to share? A: I am so thrilled to be here at Florida State and look forward to working with Honors students for years to come!
Get Involved with Honors Intramural Sports Get active, meet other Honors students, and get away from the everyday stresses of college life by joining an Honors intramural team! This semester there are four teams to join, including futsal (a kind of indoor soccer), flag football, indoor volleyball and kickball. Practice starts in October and all students are encouraged to join regardless of experience level.

Optimizing Your Campus Movie Lovers Personally, my favorite place on FSU’s campus is the Student Life Center. The SLC offers a wide selection of movies every weekend, and it’s a great place to celebrate the end of the week. There’s also video game consoles available, so you can play at your leisure.
Nature Lovers When the weather is nicer, the FSU Reservation is a great place to get fresh air. Just a quick ride away, the FSU “Rez” offers a free kayak and paddleboard rentals, which you can take out on Lake Bradford. The “Rez” also boasts an extensive rock climbing and ropes course, as well as grills and lounging chairs.
Music and Comedy Lovers Lastly, the Union, along with Club Downunder, have a multitude of events to attend or get involved with. Whether it be a local comedy showcase, an influential speaker, or an up-and-coming musician, there is always something exciting going on. Down below there's a list of the most exciting events worth checking out!
