FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES * STROZIER LIBRARY FRONT LOBBY MURAL PROJECT * SUMMER 2010
Student Mural Project Lead Kellie Silvey: “With the recent renovation of Strozier, I immediately was inspired by the simplistic division of space and distinct shapes which resembled the style of Art Deco. I wanted to make sure that a similar aesthetic was echoed in the mural, yet maintain the concept of digital growth within the new library. I uploaded an image of an old pastel drawing I had done a few years back and digitally transformed its original organic feel to the most basic of shapes, a concept taken from Cubism, which later inspired Art Deco. Details in the design changed dramatically to a pixilated grouping of colors and shapes and many of the colors were altered for cohesion with the library’s color scheme. I believe the addition of the mural illuminates the entrance to a library embracing modern ideas and digital formats.” FSU Art Professor Terri Lindbloom: “Most importantly, I want to thank Strozier Library for providing such a great opportunity for the Art Department students. It is a unique and high traffic venue that enables the whole FSU community to experience art on a daily basis. Students in my Advanced Workshop: All Media course spent approximately four weeks on their “Public Intervention: Collaborative Community Project” working on a site-specific mural. The process included: taking photographs of the site, idea generation and discussion, final selection of concepts, and presentation to Dean Zimmerman of ideas. The design chosen was then projected onto the doors, traced with pencil, and painted. It’s a brilliant piece accomplished by some very talented students representing all disciplines in our Art Department. They all worked together to create this unique mural. It truly was a collaborative and interdisciplinary effort!” Student Mural Team: Nina Anderson, Nicole McLaughlin, Scott Silvers, Morgan Slutzker, Valerie Norton, Kellie Silvey, Malahat Anwar Quershi, Lenore Messler.
