EXPLORE CAMPUS TRADITIONS Seminole influences The campus of Florida State University Panama City is designed to incorporate the traditions of the Seminole nation, the living symbol of Florida State University. One of the facets of the Seminole culture is colorful, symbolic patchwork clothing. Many of these symbols are tied to Seminole legends. In honor of the patchwork tradition, the campus uses both the “Four Crossed Log” and the “Everlasting Flame” patterns in its architecture.
Everlasting flame The story of the everlasting flame shares how the gods gave fire to the chief, who would share the flame with the rest of the community. The ideas of the flame and community harmonize with western thinking about education. FSU incorporates the flame tradition within its seal. The university seal features three torches, which symbolize strength, skill and character. At FSU Panama City, the entry plaza of the Holley Academic Center comes to life with the Seminole pattern of the Everlasting Fire, which is symbolic of the passing on of knowledge throughout the University.
the four crossed logs The “Four Crossed Logs” pattern originates from the Seminole tradition of scouts searching for a better place for the community to live. Once the scouts found a suitable place, they would leave a marked trail of four crossed logs. The scouts would then lead the rest of the tribe along the new pathway. This pattern is displayed in the waterfront plaza of the Holley Academic Center. The pattern notes the responsibility of each member of the academic community to make a path to a new place and to bring others along.
Community fire At the east entrance, students have a place to relax and interact with one another. Like the fire at the center of a Seminole village, the space gives the opportunity to share in the experience of the community.

fREShMAN REQUIREMENTS Admission to Florida State University is competitive. It requires graduation from a regionally accredited high school with specific high school academic units, a cumulative weighted grade point average (GPA) and test scores. Satisfying these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. The academic profile of the middle 50% range of applicants we hope to admit for 2014 is: 3.5-4.0 weighted GPA; 24-28 ACT composite; 1680-1870 SAT total. In addition to the academic profile above, a variety of other factors are also considered in the review process. These include the written essay, the rigor and quality of courses and curriculum, grade trends, class rank, strength of senior schedule in academic subjects, math level in the senior year and number of years in a sequential foreign language. Please note that letters of recommendation are not required and will not be used in the decision-making process. REQUIRED hIgh SChOOL COURSE UNITS The units listed below represent the minimum required for admission consideration: • 4 units of English, at least three with substantial writing requirements • 4 units of mathematics at the Algebra I level and higher • 3 units of natural science, at least two with laboratory experience • 3 units of social science • 2 sequential units of the same foreign language or American Sign Language • 2 elective units, preferably in the above subject areas Satisfying these minimum required units does not guarantee admission.

The typical student accepted to Florida State has 4.5 units of English, 5.5 units of math, 4.5 units of natural science, 5 units of social science, and 3.5 units of foreign language.
ACT/SAT INfORMATION • Applicants should take both exams, since we use the best composite/total score for admission and scholarship purposes. (Applicants taking the ACT must also submit the ACT Writing Test.) • Applicants should take each exam more than once, since we use the highest subscores to create the ACT composite and SAT total. • In addition to the applicant's overall composite on the ACT or total score on the SAT, the following minimum subscores are required: Writing - 21 on the ACT English and ACT E/W or 500 on the SAT writing Math - 21 on the ACT math or 500 on the SAT math Reading - 22 on the ACT reading or 500 on the SAT critical reading Having these minimum subscores does not guarantee admission. The typical student admitted to the University has higher subscores. The June SAT and June ACT are the latest tests that we will use in the admission process for applicants applying for the summer or fall term. The November SAT and October ACT are the latest tests we will use for spring. TRANSfER REQUIREMENTS All transfer applicants must meet requirements for admission to the University and to the major/program of interest. They must also have satisfied the state of Florida’s foreign language admissions requirement and have college level proficiency skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Freshman/Sophomore-Level Applicants Freshman and sophomore applicants (12-59 semester hours of transferable credit as determined by the Office of Admissions) must: • Meet freshman admission criteria. • Have at least a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative GPA on all college work attempted. • Have at least a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) GPA on all college work attempted at the last institution.

The Connect! Program is an option for students who want to earn an Associate of Arts degree at Gulf Coast State College and transfer to FSU Panama City to earn a bachelor’s degree. FSU Panama City and Gulf Coast State College counselors will assist you in creating an individualized map of a four-year education program in your preferred major. This plan will help you stay on track to ensure you take the necessary courses to complete both the A.A. and bachelor’s degrees.
Admission to Florida State University graduate school is competitive. Students must meet both University and departmental requirements. Admission to graduate study is a two-fold evaluation process. The office of Graduate Admissions determines eligibility for admission to the University, and the academic department or college determines admissibility to the degree program.

Junior/Senior-Level Applicants Junior and senior applicants (60 or more semester hours of transferable credit as determined by the Office of Admissions) must: • Have at least a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative grade point average (GPA) on all college work attempted. • Have at least a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) on all college work attempted at the last institution. Associate in Arts (AA) Applicants Applicants transferring directly after earning the AA degree from a Florida public institution will receive priority consideration for admission.
In order to meet minimum University admission requirements, an applicant must have: • Earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable degree from an international institution, with a minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average (GPA) in all coursework attempted while registered as an upper-division undergraduate student working towards a bachelor’s degree; or • A graduate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable degree from an international institution; and • Test scores from a nationally standardized graduate admission test which is acceptable for the program to which the applicant is applying. Individual academic departments or colleges may impose more restrictive admission requirements. Program requirements may be based on other factors, such as research interests of the prospective student, letters of recommendation, personal statement, interviews/ portfolios/auditions or other factors specified by the program.

TUITION DIFFERENTIAL Florida State University Panama City offers a special out-of-state tuition rate to residents of Alabama and Georgia counties whose borders are within 50 miles of the Florida border and FSU Panama City’s service area. These special rates make affording an education from a fully accredited, nationally ranked university a reality for students living in rural and outlying areas, without the need to move away from home and incur additional living expenses. As tuition rates across the nation continue to rise, an education from Florida State University Panama City is considered a tremendous value. Alabama residents of the following counties may qualify for this special rate: Baldwin, Barbour, Butler, Clarke, Coffee, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Escambia, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Mobile, Monroe, Pike and Washington. Georgia residents of the following counties may qualify for this special rate: Baker, Decatur, Early, Miller and Seminole.

Scholarships There are a number of scholarship opportunities available that can help defray educational costs and help you achieve your goals. Team Osceola, comprised of six FSU Panama City electrical engineering students, soared to second place in the altitude competition during the final launch events of the 2012 National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA University Student Launch Initiative (USLI). Official NASA results also ranked Team Osceola #7 for the Overall Team award and in the top 3 for Rookie Team award. Organized in September 2011, FSU Panama City’s Team Osceola is the first Florida State University team to participate in the competition, which included 41 participating schools and universities from across the nation.
