Devyn’s Corner By Devyn Fussman The change of weather and pumpkin mania are constant reminders of the autumn season, which brings with it one of the year’s most important processes: elections. This is an especially important election year for members of Pride Student Union, as the state of same-sex marriage legality in Florida could change depending on whoever is elected to the Florida Senate, especially given the recent Supreme Court decision. For the past few weeks, students have been urging their peers to register

and participate while taking time to celebrate their historic month. They now have their chance. Students can vote on Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Student Government Association’s fall elections to determine board positions in organizations like Campus Rec, the Senate and COGS. By voting in SGA elections, students are exercising their right to have a say in how their tuition dollars are spent, and helping to decide what sort of action Florida State university needs most. After the elections, the month will continue to be a busy one for agencies and RSOs. Union Productions and SOAR Board are gearing up to combine work with Halloween fun at the annual Trick ORG Treat as part of Haunted Harvest. Students can learn about RSOs while enjoying free candy, games and a decorated Oglesby Union to make up for being

WSU Educates On Female Oppression Besides its importance to breast cancer awareness, October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Possibly the biggest perpetrator of domestic abuse is silence from victims and bystanders. As such, Women Student Union has packed the month with events where women speak up and educate their peers on today’s challenges. To promote a more relaxed atmosphere, WSU is hosting a Movie Night in Union 323 at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15. The movie deals with female empowerment and will provide bonding time for mentors and mentees and an invitation

for others to learn more about WSU. As a continuation of FSU’s fight to end and prevent sexual assault, WSU is holding “Campus Conversation” on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in HWC 2100 to educate students. Topics include the definition of and how to obtain consent, bystander intervention, campus resources and support But women don’t have to be assaulted to become victims of oppression. WSU’s Coffee Talk on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. in SSB 203 will focus on Dove’s “Like a Girl” campaign, which deals with sexist stereotypes. Students can join

SGA Senators Alexandra Barth, Joe Brown, Meredith Albion and Tommy Anderson

SGA Students Preparing To Vote Considering its location in the capital of Florida, it’s not surprising that FSU is a political hotspot. Besides the SGA elections for Senate, Campus Rec and COGS on Oct. 15, there are the midterm Leon County general elections on Nov. 4.

SGA Election Day is one of the most important days of the year for FSU, as the election can make a difference in how A&S fees are allocated and spent. To encourage voter registration and

Bamby Salcedo Shares Her Story In light of all the October celebrations, Pride Student Union has partnered with Hispanic/Latino Student Union and Women Student Union to bring Latina and transgender activist Bamby Salcedo to Florida State. Salcedo was diagnosed as HIV positive and was previously homeless, a crystal meth addict and a prostitute. Over a decade later, she has become a nationally recognized leader and works to achieve equal rights for Latino/as and transgender people. Flyers, posters and banners are printed for free at FSU for Recognized Student Organizations that provide paper to the SGA’s Student Publications Office (A302 Union). Each semester each RSO can print two rolls of paper (HPQ1412A, 2 feet x 100 feet; officedepot.com, HEWQ1412A) or the equivalant on a

After receiving her diagnosis, Salcedo worked for Bienstar Human Services, the Los Angeles Latino AIDS Advocacy group. Later she served as a board member for a national Latino/a human rights organization, Unid@s LGBT, and now runs a group called Coalición Trans-Latina that works with Spanish-speaking transgenders to ensure their voices are heard. FSU students will have the opportunity to attend a Q&A session with Salcedo in the SLC Theater after the screening of Transvisible on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join the agencies and the conversation. ream of paper (Hammermill Premium Multipurpose Paper, 8.5’’ x 11’’ 24lb; officedepot.com, 0393122). Members of Student Government Association’s Student Senate inside the Capitol of Florida

SGA Gathers For Senate at the Capitol SGA has gone beyond the chambers of FSU. Members of the Office of Governmental Affairs (OGA) and the SGA Senate traveled to the Capitol to hold a meeting and give thanks to the Florida

Legislature for enacting all student legislation FSU presented to them. “OGA has a special relationship with the Senate, as we work together to serve the student body,” said Julianne Simson,

Pride Month Celebration Continues Pride Month is in full swing, and FSU’s Pride Student Union has a full calendar of events. Though some are educational, and others are just pure fun, all have the goal of celebrating LGBTQ+ heritage and encouraging FSU students to come out and meet others. On an educational note, Pride has put together a number of informational events regarding queer and sexual health topics. Queer 101 is Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. in SSB 214, followed by Drag Condom Bingo on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in HWC 3100. Condom Bingo is similar to regular bingo with the

exception of a drag queen host and promotion of sexual health awareness. The last activity is Queer Sex Ed on Monday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. in SSB 201. This covers everything from masturbation to consent for couples, topics often neglected in school sex ed classes. Seminole Allies has joined in by adding a new workshop called Personal Identity Development, a two-hour workshop that encourages participants to explore their identities through interactive exercises, multi-media and discussion. It is open to anyone, though registration is required in addition to the prerequisite of

Students can bring whatever sports equipment they like or just enjoy the food, fun and the great outdoors. Pride will also hold a “Swap and Meet” at 7 p.m. the next day in SSB 208. Students can bring secondhand clothes, shoes, bags and accessories to swap with fabulous friends. The month will culminate with a Halloween Party on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. in SSB 203. Feel free to dress up as fabulous or freaky as you like.
